Tom was incredibly easy and professional to work with. We had reached out to him a few months back to go over a large backyard project that he gave us a quote for. We decided to scale back and asked him to revise his bid. He did so without hesitation and even provided insight and ideas on things we can do now and things we could push off. He and his team came and knocked things out in two days. I asked them to salvage some wood of mine and they took their time removing it to avoid damaging it. I know other contractors would have just said no they cant do that. Tom took his time and answered every question I had to make sure I was comfortable with the yard and how to maintain it. Tom is the best! I had big weeds sprout up in my yard, that eventually turned in to an overdeveloped tree, that eventually grew in to my neighbor's yard without an invite! I had my usual gardener remove it, but it came back within a year. It was time to call the experts. I called Tom from Navlan's. He made quick work of removing the tree, dug out the surrounding area, and took extra steps to make sure the tree wouldn't grow back. He is experienced and knowledgeable, listens to client requests and makes appropriate recommendations, is reliable and responsive, helps clients vet ideas and options, is pleasant and timely, has a conscientious and polite crew, and leaves the job site clean each day. Our project consisted of 1) removing all vegetation and hardscape (including some mighty ficus trees); 2) back yard: designing and installing a butterfly garden with arbor access and a fountain centerpiece, flagstone paths with eye-popping stone filler, three sod components, a tree/boulder island in a grass area, custom raised redwood planter beds, and block wall planting areas with meandering borders; 3) front yard: custom dry river bed with a flagstone bridge and path (yes, it's built to walk on), front tree planter and rock/plant enhancements adjacent to the river bed; 4) new automated irrigation systems for the front and back yards and raised garden beds; and, 5) pouring a new diamond pattern driveway, new front porch, new back porch, new shed pad, new back steps w/step lights, and new secondary patio in the back. Each component is outstanding and Tom ensured there is a natural flow/connection among the components we requested. Our full property re-landscaping job was five months from initial meeting to completion due to covid, late spring rains, and coordination delays. However, we think Tom and his associated cement contractor, Paul of J & D Concrete, were well worth the wait. The final job is beautiful and high quality. Tom was in touch throughout the weeks on hold and, once the work began, it continued every business day. The work was completed earlier than projected and Tom was personally here every day to ensure the quality of work performed. The project included installation of conduit under the new concrete to provide water and power to various areas of the property. Tom and Paul communicated directed with each other about the timing of the demolition, laying the conduit before final concrete forms were set, as well as getting together with us to coordinate the hardscape and landscape design layout. It was so nice to not be in the middle of their scheduling. Tom stayed engaged in providing the best possible outcome throughout the process, not only being willing to make adjustments to address unforeseen factors or changes in scope but initiating modifications or enhancements where aspects of a specific project goal could be better met. On a related "attention to the job" note, with cell phone use so key to how people conduct business I think it's worth mentioning that when Tom was on site, with rare exception, he was not on the phone. When he was on the property he was engaged in working on our job. We had definite features of interest for the plants as to color range, density, etc. Tom provided recommendations and maintenance advice on a range of possible solutions. He provided feedback and alternatives when we presented ideas which didn't fit our stated project goals and priorities but still did what we asked in the end. The curbside appeal of the dry river bed with flagstone bridge is tremendous. Tom took the information we provided relating to features we liked and didn't care for in other dry river beds, the way we wanted the river bed to stand-out from the remainder of the yard, and color preferences and made a design we rate 12 on a scale of 1-10. He gave us the opportunity to select focal stones with him as well as the specific stone sizes for the other components. As our project completion ran past the date of a special event scheduled at our home, Tom brought in extra help and worked his crew a couple of long days to complete front yard design implementation ahead of schedule and ensure the full job site was cleared of tools and safe for access. Prior to engagement, Tom provided a detailed scope of work and cost estimate which we reviewed and modified before signing off and making a deposit. Tom maintained records of job modifications, outlined specific points of increased costs, and decreased contract costs when services were eliminated and/or the product used was below the estimate. Tom has done 2 projects for us in the last year, redoing our front and back yards. We are very happy with both projects. Tom and his concrete guy, Paul Jauregui, worked together to totally redo both spaces including coordinating a pool remodel. We give him very high marks, as both Tom and Paul are easy to work with, and have come in within their estimates on both jobs. Both jobs were finished in a timely manner, although the backyard required coordination with a pool contractor as well. Tom also went the extra mile for us, as we wanted several laser cut art panels with lighting. Tom had not done this type of installation before, but found a contractor who could do the job and brought that in within budget. Tom and his team did an amazing job on landscaping my entire yard--replacing grass with blue fescue, pea gravel and completely transforming an area around a large tree. It looks fantastic. He also put in a drip irrigation system. My only regret is that I didn't call sooner. I procrastinated so long and then was in a rush to get it done before I had family visitors. We had requested Seed, Sod, and drought resistant options for the lawn so that we can decide which we would go with. He got back to use with 1 quote for SOD and when I asked for the others we never heard back. His quote was substantially higher than the others we received. Tom designed and installed new landscaping for our front yard, including new landscape lighting, trees, plants and updated sprinkler system. It was a fairly large job, and he demonstrated creativity, knowledge of horticulture and deep experience. They worked with a stone mason, to create new flower planters around the trees, driveway and flower beds. Tom was meticulous, hard working and conscientious, and finished the job on time. Our project required brick work, new concrete, moving a retaining wall, sprinklers, sod, new bed plantings, lighting, tile work, and a 36 inch box tree. Tom sub contracted the concrete work, his recommendation was excellent they removed an old brick flower bed next to the driveway and poured new concrete so we have a bit more room. It came out better than we expected. They worked clean and on time. Tom also removed a large tree and we converted the area to a utility spot. All our timers (lights and lawn) were relocated to that space, Tom worked with our electrician, no problems there. We also had a new concrete pad poured there by Toms sub-contractor. We were a little concerned about this because of an existing a/c compressor but it came out perfectly. We experienced a problem when working on the flower bed retaining wall, discovered the previous owner replaced the water feed to the house only two inches below the top soil and they did not use copper. We also found a clean out trap buried in the flower bed, and it was capped improperly using duct tape and rubber. Tom replaced all the pluming properly and up to code, none of which was anticipated in our original bid. We drove him crazy with the plant selection but he was patient with us and hung in there, the final product is better than we hoped. We will definitely use him again and we highly recommend him. read more
