Travel threads and conversations related to Red River Gorge reference Miguel's frequently and the takes seem to be divided into two--either it's some of the best pizza you've ever had and a must-stopi when in the area or it's "over-rated" and receptive of it's reputation solely due to famished hikers quickly devouring the food and overestimating it. I'd say the truth is somewhere in the middle and my ranking is closer to a 3.5, but I'm ranking down instead of up due to my wife's overall slightly lower ranking than my own. We arrived in town early on a Sunday and spent most of the day hiking. Then we checked in at the nearby RRG State Resort and changed, headed down to Miguel's for our first meal in town. We ordered a full pie with pepperoni and bacon. We were in the mood for a starter of some sorts (breadsticks, etc.) but didn't see anything like that on the menu. I was also in the mood for a beer or two to pair with my pizza, this being our spring break vacation and all and I'd noticed they served local craft brews. However, this visit happening to occur on Easter Sunday*, there was a sign propped up in front of the selections stating "no sales--Easter Sunday" which led people in line (not in my party) to mutter and make alternative plans (most opted to walk to a liquor store nearby and purchase a six pack to drink with their food here, concealing it in "extra cups"). I settled for a local soda, the beloved "Ale8".
Our pizza was...good. As I said, I liked it a bit more than my wife. I thought the bacon was good--smoky and crispy, you could tell it was fresh(ly) cooked. Pepperoni good. Crust good, cheese okay, sauce fine. It was a bit on the greasy side, like a whole soup of grease on top of the cheese but it didn't feel particularly heavy/greasy. There could have been a touch more of both meat selections. We ordered our cheese mozzarella, with the "over and under" option they list (supposedly a bit of cheese bake onto the bottom of the crust) but only noticed one small piece of baked cheese on the bottom of one piece of pizza. We ate most of the pizza, took some back to our room to stow in the fridge where we had it cold the next day. My wife thought it was a bit better then.
Service was friendly, prices fair. Plenty of parking. Everything inside could have used a scrub, tables were crumb-covered and floors were dirty but hey, they cater to hikers so no biggie. Hours are great, open 7am-10pm most days including weekends, holidays, and maybe off-season (hard to know what is considered off season in the area, hours for most places when we were here in early April 2024 were all over the place and didn't match online/Yelp/Facebook/Google).
Instead of a trash can for your paper plates and pizza boxes, etc., they have a "recycle" bin. This is excellent in theory, but it looks like all the cans and such are tossed in by everyone alongside the grease stained pizza boards and plates which means that likely all gets tossed in a landfill since food-stained items can't be recycled.
In short--I'd definitely go back if back in the area and recommend other travelers give them a try. There aren't a ton of food options after a long day's hike here, and this place serves up solid, hometown pizza at a fair price.
*On that Easter/beer thing...okay, so it isn't a law that prohibited the sale of beer as the county Miguel's is located in allows the sale of beer on Sundays and the liquor store was in full force down the road. Miguel's apparently sells beer on all Sundays except Easter? Maybe Christmas? I mean, it's a privately owned business and they can absolutely do anything they want but it seems an odd decision to make and one that hurt their sales that day a decent amount judging by the comments from others in line when I was here. If you feel it's wrong to sell beer on Sundays, totally your choice but picking out one Sunday as if every potential customer shares your particularly theological sentiment is odd, given that (for example) those who abstain from alcohol for Lent (as is common) are free to imbibe again on Easter Sunday as celebration and commencement of Lent, so...just odd. read more
