There's nothing more annoying than a dull knife, especially with all the cooking at home that I've done for the past year and my Wüsthof knives were in desperate need for a proper sharpening. A quick Yelp search and I found Mike -- we texted on a Friday and he said that he'll be in the area Saturday morning and to text back then. Fast fwd: to this morning, I sent him a text and he responded very quickly. In about 10 mins or so, he was parked in front of my building and I met him with the 11 knives that I needed to sharpen. He's so lovely and a fellow dog lover -- I recently adopted a puppy myself! -- and the whole process took just about maybe 15 mins? All 11 knives sharpened for just $40 and I gave him a tip, because it's COVID times and that felt appropriate. Next time, I'll spread the word to others in my building! For years I've seen Mike's truck all over Manhattan and kept forgetting to tryout his service. I have a set of knives that go through a constant workout of deboning, chopping, etc everyday and even constantly using a 3000 & 6000 grit grindstone they still need some professional help once in awhile. Mike was awesome. The knives came out better than new and he was able to get out some nasty chips on my 8" chef knife from being down a Dungeness crab. Amazing service. I texted Mike, and it turned out he was going to be in Manhattan today (a Sunday). He asked me address, and told me it would be about 20 minutes, which was an excellent estimate. I heard his truck's bell, but he also texted me he was here. I brought him my knives, and 15 minutes later they were all set, and razor sharp. I texted Mike & Sons around 9 a.m. and by 10 a.m. Mike and his truck were outside my apartment. Communicating with Mike & Sons via text was quick and easy. They were very responsive. The price was $6 per item and I had seven items: five knives and two pairs of scissors. Maybe because one of the knives was a paring knife he charged me $40 for the entire job. Such a great price! And I didn't even have to carry my knives anywhere to get them sharpened. I got a text when Mike was outside. He was very friendly and very knowledgeable about his craft. In about 15 minutes, all my knives and scissors were sharpened. He wrapped them up and newspaper and returned them to me. He gave me some great advice about how to keep my knives sharp. This is really hard to write because I literally waited a couple years for the opportunity to get my knives sharpened by this service. I was so excited to support what seemed like a great old New York business. But the work that was done was absolutely terrible, with the edges becoming wavy and burred after only a few uses. I wound up going to a different independent sharpener, on the Upper West Side, who was uncertain he could salvage them but eventually succeeded. I see mixed reviews on here, with some having the same experience and others saying the work was fine, so there maybe it's just a matter of being lucky enough to catch them on a good day. read more

My other half has a set of Farberware knives that were in need of attention. I almost went to a shop or store, but I remember growing up in Brooklyn and seeing this truck ringing the bell and offering sharpening services. I was determined to find this truck. Here he is on Yelp and being searchable for people like me. In addition to the 7-8 knives from the set, I also have 2 knives (1 fillet, 1 butcher) and shears from my mom. They're over 30 years old. Mike responds best through text and so do I, so that's a win-win. I contacted him to set an appointment for Saturday morning. He came all the way out to Queens! Not even my friends will come to Queens. I dropped off the knives in a large Tupperware and he texted me when he was done. I would have waited by the truck and played with cutie Murray, but it was too cold. I came down to the truck to pick up and he demonstrated with several of the knives slicing a piece of newspaper. Guys, bring your to-be-sharpened items in a strong container. After he's done with them, you're going to feel like your life is in danger just from holding it. 10 knives, shears, AND he fixed my shears because they were messed up. $40. Incredible. Mike's son drove by and rang his bell; I'd seen the truck before and decided, why not? I ran down with one knife, just to be sure he was the real deal. Ok, he IS. The truck is about, oh, maybe 50 years old, fully equipped. Sparks flew as Mike's son sharpened the knife, and when I got back upstairs, that knife sliced a ripe tomato into transparent slices. I'd never really thought about knife sharpening, but this was an I SO love Brooklyn moment! This gentleman drives around offering his knife sharpening services out of the bag of his van (think food truck meets hardware services), and with him are the 3 sweetest pit bulls I spent the whole time petting and hugging (and getting hand shakes and kisses - one a former rescued fighter and now super sweet and a regular visitor to the pediatric hospitals). Mike is 60-something, has a big heart, is so nice, is back in his (new or renovated) home in Coney Island as of 2 month ago, shared all kinds of Brooklyn history, and (this review shoulda been posted Nov 28) will have a huge, celebratory family gathering Thanksgiving. Hands down he is a master sharpener. My knives are now super sharp and ready for holiday meal prep. I spent a bunch of time looking for places to sharpen my knives, but wasn't thrilled with dropping them off somewhere and having to wait days or weeks for their return. Of course I put this off for a while and now it's crunch time for the holidays. I must say that I was skeptical at first - could it really be just as easy as sending him a text and hooking up with him at a location. Well it was. Upon meeting him, Mike had such a pleasant attitude and was eager to look at my shears. He saw they needed a lot of work and got started right away. He was able to sharpen 6 pairs in under half an hour and even fixed my shears that another sharpening company had previously ruined--all at a completely reasonable price, almost unbelievable in NYC! Updated 11/09/2019: Since in Mike's reply he is so convinced he did not sharpen my knives, I edited review to post a screenshot of our text conversation. End of story. Original review: I used to send my knives out to a place in Connecticut that would sharpen them and return them. They closed about eight years ago and I was at a loss and tried sharpening my knives myself, but I wasn't very good at it. To me, having your knives sharpened is kind of like having your shoes shined: I get so much bang for my buck that I would pay double. The first time Mike sharpened my knives, I randomly saw his truck on my street, spoke with him, and came back out with the requisite number of knives. His work was serviceable and it was very satisfying to get it done and have a new source. Including the first time, he sharpened my knives three times over four years. The last time he sharpened our knives, he damaged six out of seven of them. The damage includes bumps, gaps, and tears in the edges. With my Santoku knife, tiny parts of the steel blade have actually been folded over from the obverse to the reverse, and in another, the edge is no longer straight but dips up and then down again. Everyone can have an off day and that is why I did not post a negative review but instead texted Mike. At first he expressed skepticism that it was his work and he asked me for photos. When I provided him with more details and sent him the high resolution images, he agreed to come by and make it right. But I never heard from him again and that was many months ago. He damaged my knives, I told him about it, he said he would correct the damage, then I never heard from him again. read more
