Well I hate to do this but finally cancelled my membership after being a member over 10 years. The reason: I couldn't take the grating psychedelic/acid rock music they insist on playing upstairs. It's an assault on the senses that was affecting my nervous system. Repeated complaints were met with indifference even after pointing out the effects music can have on the nervous system and that most gyms play pop music from the current century. Mike Arteaga does not care about creating a place conducive to wellness. Plus the limited hours during the weekend is a big drawback and the frequent closings. I love the spaciousness of the gym and its equipment layout, the cleanliness, the equipment and the pool. Every aspect of the gym is well done: staff, upkeep, hours of opening. Perhaps most of all - and 100% different from other gyms and the YMCA - is the authentic hospitality and helpfulness of the staff at the entrance. Rare, indeed. They are not allowed to use their cell phones and instead offer kindness and knowledgeable assistance as needed. read more

THE GOOD.. Big and friendly. The only gym in the area. They have a theater room with exercise equipment so you can watch a movie while exercising. Great parking. Inviting staff. THE BAD.. Not enough staff. The equipment is so old that even the aesthetics of them seem to come from the 60's. There are no training staff other than a couple of days and a couple of hours a week. The aerobic machines (treadmills etc..) either need repair or don't work. And the pool.. Oh the pool. I understand the importance of family as I'm a father of 4 but the gym is not a place to bring children to. (Especially not 8 year old girls in the men's locker room!) It's not conducive to the majority of members working at their health goals to have masses of little kids screaming and splashing while others are exercising. It's a decent place (if they update a bit) but it's not worth more than $20 a month. read more

When you take a tour, they tell you floor trainers can explain how to use machines. Conceal that there are no trainers 90% of the time. Some machines or hanging straps are very different and I need demonstration to be safe. Many machines are old with resulting problems--displays not working, rusty chains. Ex. Rower displays can not be reached while on machine unless longer limbed, aka a male. Counts calories--with nowhere to enter weight--c'mon. Adductor really hard to lift legs over high pads--again better for long limbed people (again, men). Advice: during tour, fully try out specific things you wish to use, scrutinize that equipment, know that any issues will likely be present on other things you haven't tried out. No towels even for pool??? The good: big windows, a/c good (not crowded), clean. read more

I've maintained a membership with a gym for decades and this is my spot since before the COVID times. They are affordable, friendly, and have plenty of space and modern facilities. I mainly use the Cardio Cinema and treadmills/ellipticals/Nautilus equipment, and occasionally the rowing machine. The pool is solid, with lap lanes, a reserved lane for people without reservations, and a cold plunge and a hot tub too. Big shouts out to the staff, both at the Highland and the Poughkeepsie branch. They have always been helpful and respectful, and it's nice to see the same faces over the last several years even through the pandemic. Sidebar: they were super cool about pausing/unpausing my membership dues when I was out of town for months, no hassle like in the old days and old gyms! Highly recommend! read more

I have been a member for three years now, and honestly think the one reviews are, in my experience, over the top. It's a gym, not Shangra -la. The staff ( front desk, trainers, custodial) are sweet and helpful. If you have a problem, they are ready to listen.The place is always clean. Although I prefer working out in the outdoors, I'm so grateful to have this as a backup when it's too hot, rainy, freezing/snowing, etc. read more

I've been working out at different gyms for the better part of 20 years. This gym might have the least guest friendly policies I've ever seen. I hope at some point Gold's buys this place out. Took a tour today and this is what I found out. - Weight room is very small. When I asked how crowded it gets I was not given a very specific answer. Aka -packed. - They don't have a moving policy on their long term commitments. Most gyms state in their contracts that if you move a X distance from their club they will not hold you to their termination fee. I don't have any plans of moving, but life can surprise you over the course of 2 years. - This is the main reason for 1 star. After I went through the tour with the membership person, I wanted to try it out for the day. Expecting to hear ok you get a 7 day pass or a 3 day pass, I was very shocked when she flat out told me that they don't do that. I can't even pay to get in for the day. So you want me to commit two years to your slightly overpriced gym but you won't give me a day OR LET ME PAY? Get out of here. BYE FELICIA. read more

Joined & Cancelled Same Day! I've never been so disgusted in my entire life. Gym has policy in which you can bring your child for free, which means there's little children playing and running around in the locker while grown men & old naked men are walking around completely nude.!!! Totally skeeved me out! Very inappropriate! The shower area has no privacy and no area to undress which means you pretty much have to undress in front of everyone including the unsupervised children running around otherwise you're clothing & towel would be completely soaked. Machines on second floor are so outdated and look more like torchure devices instead of machines to workout on. Only positive was that the staff was very apologetic with my unpleasant experience. read more

Great facilities and staff. Pool, hot tub, sauna, movie room, locker rooms, excellent. Drawbacks: If you have a leg day and really push yourself on the machines and cardio upstairs, getting back downstairs is dangerous! Gotta make sure your legs aren't too rubbery for the trip down or you will fall! Not enough stationary full seat bikes, some broken/outdated machinery, NO classes, and you have to pay additional dues every month if you want to be able to use the other Mike Arteaga gyms in the area. I feel that the membership is quite costly compared to other gyms, considering that they do not offer guided classes or multiple location entry. read more

Older staff at the desk are rude. Equipment is outdated. Super expensive. Classes are crowded and the hours are not good for anyone who doesn't have a 9-5 schedule. If you do have a 9-5 schedule it get super crowded on machines. Beware the annual fee, too. They only had my partner sign the paperwork so I didn't know it existed. It's 2019, maybe they should go over all the paperwork with every adult instead of allowing one adult to sign for another. Seemed unprofessional and a bit illegal. This is by far the worst establishment I have ever been to. Do your research this is a place where you have to worry about targeted harassment from the employees and rude managers. Don't believe me? Well look around for the bad reviews it says allot when people go out of their way to write a one star review. Still not convinced? Ask to see the rules and dress code that you agree to follow in the contract. You'll quickly notice they'll jump through hopes to avoid supplying it all the way up to the point where they admit that said policy doesn't even exist on paper. read more

The reviews on here seriously had me about to write this place off. I then asked a friend who has a membership what her opinion was, and she had only positive things to say about it. I joined and found the staff to be super nice and helpful, the rates reasonable, the gym clean and well equipped, and the pool is great. I'm so glad I joined M. Arteaga's, despite the negative reviews. The difference in the reality of this place compared to what's written here, in respect to my experience, is pretty remarkable. Love this gym. read more

They have no customer service and get very frustrated with complaints. I signed up for a month to month membership and they charged me a yearly fee in my first two months so if you think you're going to give it a try don't waste your time. I hardly went and didnt get the chance to experience it when they charged me that fee so I paid $80 in my second month. read more

I love this gym! You never feel like anyone is staring at you this really is a judge free zone! The staff is super nice and accommodating and they are upgrading the machines and they have a cardio cinema! I quite enjoy Mike Arteaga's Fitness Express. It's two floors. The bottom floor includes the locker rooms and the weights (plus pool). The top floor has circuit training and various machines- treadmills, stair-climbers and such- all of which have TVs attached. There's also a movie room, where you can watch a movie on the big screen while exercising. For me, the downside would be the cost. If you get one month (and don't sign up for a year) it costs $35, and if you want the pool, which I really would have liked- it's nearly twice as much, so I didn't go for it and can't tell you how it is. Another downside is that they don't offer any fitness classes. That said, I'd still say this place deserves four stars because they keep it very clean and well maintained and the staff always greets you with a smile when you walk in. Thus far it's done a good job meeting my needs. read more

I've been a member since 2012 but cannot be a member anymore. I'm an adult and I've had a bad accident that's left me partially paralyzed. My Dr. told me to get into a pool daily. This place is 5 minutes from my home and being disabled I can get there easily than other places and the pool is what I need as many others do and they don't go because of this reason as well, I cannot go to this place because they continue to let all children (no limits) with their parents who have regular memberships into the pool for free so the pool is loaded with kids at times and an adult cannot go in to exercise (this is an exercise place for members, right?) unless you go into the lap lanes where kids are not allowed, I cannot go into the lap lanes due to my disability. I feel discriminated against and I will make a complaint to the ADA. When I had my paid membership I went to the pool to exercise and the kids were rowdy and one of them pointed at me and yelled out loud, she is fat. I was never so humiliated in my life. Everyone looked at me and I just cried. I told this to the manger at the front desk and they didn't even flinch. I asked if there was an adult time only and they said no, the kids are allowed all the time the pool is opened. I don't know if anyone else cares about this but I do and am very disappointed. It seems if you don't have kids to benefit from this "amenity" then it's too bad so this is an amenity I pay for and need and cannot use, even if you are paying and the kids are not, yes their parents pay for their own membership but they pay nothing more for their kids to go into the pool for free. Where is the amenity for an adult who pays her membership the same and had to deal with this? I talked with the staff and they just plainly do not care. I really like the gym . I joined in February when I turned 56 years old , no previous experience at a gym.I started on the circuit everyone at the gym was helpful and encouraging. After first visit I became sick ,question virus . Noticed people at gym sweating on equipment and not cleaning . I was not even instructed how to clean equipment until I called with illness. A lot of the machines have problems with their computers and some machines need some service making creaking noises. I get upset because hotel next door uses gym and those people don't know rules or respect gym property.Whats not fair is unlike the gym in Poughkeepsie their are no classes offered with the highland membership. I attended this gym for a few months and stopped because of three reasons. Their pricing and fees were one of those reasons. This gym is a bit expensive and has a ridiculous set of fees. The logic of their entry "no commitment' fee makes no sense whatsoever. Seeing this with basic logic, paying a $39 start up fee as being a non-committed member should entail the ability to quit at any given time at your own discretion. However, certainly this is not the case. In order to quit and stop being billed, you would have to give at least a one week notice of doing so. The irony of this is during that week's notice, the non-committed member who just voided their membership is still being billed for membership fees and any other miscellaneous fees, such as the $29 yearly equipment upgrade fee. Another reason I chose to stop going to this gym was because there isn't much to do there. In other words, I became bored easily at this gym because of the lack of social activities. It would've been nicer if I had the choice to change the exercise routine if there were group exercise activities where I could meet people and make some friends along the way rather than everyone (including myself) being a solo act. I believe it was more of the social environment and the attitude of the staff wanting people to simply do their own thing. The last reason I stopped going to this gym was most members were not the sanitary bunch - from what I witnessed. One person could have been sweating all over an elliptical machine, coughing, wheezing and sneezing all over it and wouldn't have the decency to have cleaned or sanitized it after their workout for the next person to use. Another member using one of the stationery bikes didn't even clean the bike seat after their butt had sweated all over it by the time they were finished. I have noticed the staff somewhat clean the equipment at night towards closing, but I'm not sure how often that occurs during the entire day. I have been a member for 6 months and am Very satisfied with this facility. It is clean with up to date equipment. The staff has always been friendly and helpful. If you don't want to fight the crowds late afternoons are good as are later in the week. Early Saturday and Sunday I find I can get in and out in just over an hour, no waiting! read more

Overall, this is a decent facility. Definitely overpriced for what they offer but not bad. However, DO NOT use their child care! This was the draw for me since I am a single mom. I took my 2 year old twins there twice and...time #1 I was asked to leave 15 mins after I arrived because one of my daughter's had a dirty diaper. When I asked if I could change her and continue my workout, I was told no. Come to find out from the Poughkeepsie club that they should have let me changed her and continue my workout, not kicked me out. Time #2, my other daughter ended up with a bloody lip and nose because the attendant wasn't watching them. When I asked what happened, she said she wasn't sure because she wasn't "really looking" but "thinks she hit her face on a toy". There were maybe 4 kids, including mine, and the other 2 were older kids. Come on. read more
