I just moved from Chicago where my 23 year old Xterra was always well cared for. I was hesitant to try a new mechanic but knew I had to when I moved to St Pete. I read reviews and tried Mike's place. It's a little old shop in a tiny strip mall. I met Mike. He's great. He changed my oil. Then I had an overheating problem that happened as I was going on vacation days before Milton. I called him to ask if I could have my car towed there but I had the key so he couldn't work on it for a few days. He was gracious, parked my car in a safe location and waited for me to get back. Came to Mike's because I am driving my wife's 11 year old Honda with 200,000 miles that she never did any maintenance on but oil changes, tires and brakes. The car was starting to stall out, had acceleration issues, and needed an oil change. Normally, I go to the dealer-I know I pay more but at least I can have some confidence it's done right. However, I also know they would try to shove 200,000 miles worth of maintenance on me and I didn't want that. Some yelpers I'm friendly with have given Mike great reviews so I thought I'd check him out. While they did come up with a number of costly repairs, they were also up front with me about what had to be done and what wasn't critical but potentially could become a big deal. And while the total of the repairs was a lot, each individual item seemed to be priced reasonably and certainly less than I would have paid at Honda. I didn't do it all but I am sure I did more than I would have been able to afford at the dealership. Mike and his crew were friendly, seemed to be knowledgeable and finished the repairs on time. I found this place from Google and Yelp. I was looking for an honest, reliable, affordable car mechanic and this place had really good reviews. I called Monday morning at 7:30am when they opened and Mike picked up right away. He gave me an estimate on the phone for a brake flush exchange and it was at a reasonable price so I bought it in. I didn't even have to make an appointment! There is free wifi at the waiting area so I was able to get some work done while my car was serviced. I was told by another place that my terminals had to be replaced but Mike's team was honest and said it looked perfectly fine so I only paid for the brake flush. I'm so glad I found this place! They were super friendly when making my appointment and even rescheduling it as there was some kind of mixup. Prices are fair and I didn't feel taken advantage of. I went in to see why my AC wasn't blowing cold air (which is necessary 351 days of the year in FL). Versus charging me for a whole new AC unit in my 2015 Chevy, they put a little dye in to see where the leak was coming from... and it's still holding strong over 3 months later! I needed a door lock actuator replaced so I tried this place based on the reviews here and the fact that the word "affordable" is in the name. Mike saud the part cost $358, which sounded high, and with labor and shop parts the total would be $523. I called Advance Auto Parts and they said the part is $264. O'Reilly auto parts said it was $261. I expect a markup but not $100. Mike bogusley claimed he was surprised i could get the part cheaper than him, which was an insult to my intelligence. If he's paying $100 over retail for auto parts, I think he would gave gone out of business long ago. If i was buying the part from him, he was ready to do the job quickly but once I bought the part from O'Reilly, he lost interest in doing the job. He told me initially he'd probably be able to do it on a Friday afternoon but when I followed up he said he was too busy. I scheduled for Monday, then rescheduled to Wednesday but when I showed up at the appointed hour, he claimed i was supposed to come Tuesday and said he was too busy unless i left the car all day, which i could not do. SCAMMERS!!!!! I would not recommend any major work let alone any work at all seemed legit at first and nice but that changed quickly. I believe they were trying to scam because I looked and sounded younger and also had another key fob on my chain probably thinking I have more money. I came in with my dodge charger and they told me it will cost around 460$ to inspect my car to see what's all wrong, also said it can cost more if they start working on it and more problems come up which I was fine with. After finding out it used to be a police charger Ryan kept telling me every time he talked to me on the phone that those cars get ran like shit all the time and usually have a lot of problems which I already knew but was kinda giving me red flags thinking they might try to scam. Dropped it off on a Thursday told me they can't touch it till next week and they would call in a couple days waited over a whole week they didn't call at all they finally told me the problem after I called on a Tuesday over a week after. Told me it would cost around 4500$ to fix and that there could be something else that ends up being bad while working on it, I can't exactly remember what it was but told me multiple times it wouldn't be more then a 1000$ and I kept asking to make sure because I didn't want to possibly pay almost 10 thousand to fix my car what it's almost worth. Ryan said a few times to me that he don't see anything else turning out to be bad but he was just trying to sell me on some work . We agreed on that and I dropped off 3500$ deposit later that day, first thing the next morning there calling me at 8 a.m telling me it could cost 6,7,8,9 thousand dollars the car is way worst then they even thought and never seen a car as beat up as that said the camshaft needs be replaced they don't know exactly how much until the start doing more work, I told them to hold off don't do anything else. They told me to come in to look what's all wrong with the car, so I did and as I'm there the "hemi Technician" is trying to sell me on that I'm better off just fixing my "low mileage" engine which is around 150k then getting it replaced which could possibly cost me up to 10 grand, which a newer engine with around 50k miles wouldn't even be half of that. After inspecting my car and taking apart my engine they told me I would have to take it out by tow that it's not drivable and I had to sign some paper to make sure I don't sue them and that took them almost a week to come up with and print. While signing the paper the dude Ryan was telling me if we didn't wanna give you ur money back we didn't have too. I got my car towed out of there they found out it was going to another mechanic we're Ryan started pretty much saying only an idiot would do that after paying over 500$ to get my car inspected then take it somewhere else. I took my car somewhere else they had it fully fixed calling in less then 4 days and cost me right under 4000$ total and that was with all the missing parts they said were not there that I probably had to pay for as well that they stole, also said there was nothing wrong with my camshaft!!. The dude who fixed my car also told me my engine cover was not In my trunk where they were supposed to put all my parts. I went and asked them were my engine cover was and they all started looking around acting like they don't know what happened with it and they would call back never did. I waited to see if I had any other problems after fixing to write a review but my car has been running perfect since I got it fixed almost 2 months ago and sounds better then ever. Also ended up paying $550 for inspection which they said would be around 460$ total. Wish I could give ZERO stars!!! I don't usually write reviews, but if I'm super impressed I will. My first experience with Mike's is one of those rare times I am writing a review. I had hit some debris during a long road trip. It caused some kind of protective fiber board to come loose under the middle of the car and drag on the road. When I got home, I called the shop I used to use for mechanic work and to my surprise they didn't even want to look at it and recommended I take it to the dealer. I was going to call the local dealer, but then noticed they had several terrible reviews so decided to check Yelp to see if there were any independent shops around with good reviews and discovered Mike's. I called and spoke with Mike and he got me an appointment the next day (today). I took it in and they put it up on their lift and discovered that there were just a couple of bolts that were missing and they were able to replace them without having to order any parts. Mike told me no charge, just tip the tech if I had some cash on hand which of course I did. My old shop would have charged me an expensive service fee just for looking at it even if they didn't do anything. Mike just got a new customer today. How he dealt with me today is going to result in a lot of future repeat business and referrals. I have 2 other vehicles and will be taking all 3 to his shop from now on. I am new to the area, so I was looking for an honest and reasonably priced mechanic in town. I got screwed on both counts. I took my Nissan Frontier into Mike's shop because the check engine light was on. I already knew the error code, and I provided it to them. I left the vehicle with them. They said that the error code could be any number of about 5 things that they listed off. One of them was spark plugs, so I figured let's replace those first before I spend too much on diagnosing the problem. Can't hurt to replace them right? They charged me $470 to replace the spark plugs. That is obscene. After, I called around to other mechanics, and no one else was that much. For shits and giggles I called my old mechanic in California (which is much more expensive) and he quoted my MUCH less than this. Mike charged me for 2.9 hours of labor plus parts, totaling $470 for the spark plugs. Outrageous! I doubt the dealer would even charge this much. I sucked it up and took it. They said that the check engine light was off, so the problem was solved. I asked if they were sure, because the check engine light takes a while to come back on. I requested that they run it a bit, and start it several times before I come pick it up. I didn't want to pick it up, and then have the check engine light come back on. Sure enough, the check engine light came back on within 20 minutes of driving it away from the shop. I brought it back in. Then they took about a week to diagnose that the actual problem was an oxygen sensor (to be fair, I told them that there was not really a rush because this is our 3rd car). A new sensor sells for about $40, but they wanted to charge me $230 for it. I said hell no. I told them to take out the part and put in my old part. I was not going to get ripped off again. They did, but then there were issues with the bill: Then to add insult to injury, they added a $17 gasoline charge. They said that they bought gas for $3.60 per gallon, when gas is about $3.15 at every gas station in town. They claimed to have put in a quarter of a tank. I asked for the receipt. They said that they do not have it. Big surprise, because this was a fraudulent charge. I told them either refund my money or produce the receipt. The next charge was a $6 charge for "supplies." I never agreed to this. And there were no supplies provided. Finally, they charged about $10 for sales tax, which is not legal in Florida. They are only allowed to charge for sales take if they sell a part. They cannot charge sales tax for service only. This was a service only, diagnosing the problem. They did refund the sales tax and supplies charge, but I'm still waiting for a refund on the "gas" purchase. I would say that this is exactly the kind of mechanic you want to avoid. They were all nice, but I was getting ripped off at the same time. So now I don't know if the oxygen sensor is even my real problem. I've given them almost $600 and I feel like I was screwed. I'm back to square one, and looking for an honest mechanic. Hopefully, I can prevent some of you from having the experience I had. My suggestion is to look elsewhere for a mechanic. I am. read more

Mike's Affordable Auto Repair caused $6k in cosmetic damages to my passenger side and back of car. Thankfully, my auto insurance company approved my claim and not only covered the damages but is pursuing Mike's Affordable Auto through their subrogation department to recoup the costs. Mike had my car from 5/5 to 6/22. I originally took my car in for a new headlight since my dealership was backed up. They discovered I had a warranty and also needed a new engine due to blown head gaskets. When I picked up my car 7 weeks later I saw what looked like dirt streaks on the back of my car but it wasn't until after work, I started to wash my car and realized a corrosive chemical rusted my chrome and caused rust streaks on side, back and front of car. I immediately texted the photos and left a voice mail assuming that my car was vandalized while at the shop and not with their intent or knowledge. But when I spoke to both Ryan & Mike - their first words were - you brought your car into the shop this way. If you try to sue -you won't win, you don't have proof. Basically, they intimidated me, yelled and hung up on me. I'm not sure if they even have business insurance because a reputable company would've been more cooperative. Also, my neighbors and postman who see my car daily as I work from home can attest that my car was not damaged prior to taking my car to Mike's Affordable Auto. I'm writing this review so people don't make the same mistake I did. I recently purchased a 1998 4runner that is lifted. I called Mikes and told them the details of the vehicle, and what potential issues I saw and asked if they could take an overall look at it and make sure it was good for me to drive. No problem he said. I had a second conversation with Ryan prior to bringing it in and he said not a problem and to bring it in. Here is where it became less than competent service. First day it's there, they send me a picture of the alignment and how it's out of spec. Ryan calls me several hours later, saying "the truck is weird and they can't seem to get it right". So it's stays another day. Friday comes along, they still can't figure things out and call me Friday at 4:30pm to tell me it's worse and the steering wheel is crooked. I leave it with them over the weekend, reluctantly but Ryan promises they'll figure it out. Monday comes, takes all day to get a straight answer from them and the end result is an alignment not properly done and being told me steering rack and pinion has gone bad and it'll cost a grand just for the part. also mind you no testing of the steering rack or inspection was done. I take my truck from them, and still had to pay for an alignment that wasn't actually done properly. I bring it to Hardcore Trucks who within an hour has the alignment in spec and there is zero issues with the steering rack. Not only did they charge me money for an "alignment" and tires being balanced $260 (cause he didn't feel right about the job so he discounted the alignment *eye roll*) , but wasted tons of time! one of his last comments to me was "we don't usually take lifted trucks" and "I'll never try to work on an older 4runner again". I told him it would have been nice to know that they don't usually work on these types of vehicles BEFORE I brought it in, and his response was "you know you just don't know till you know" referring to not being able to service a vehicle properly. I end up giving him shop names of places I discovered (hardcore and Toy house) to refer people like me to so this doesn't happen again. mind blowing. they took a vehicle that was beyond their scope of work and had me waste time and money for no reason, all cause they couldn't just say that's not something we can service. bad business. read more

I don't recommend Mike's Affordable Auto Repair. I brought my 2017 Kia Rio in because it was wobbling a little when I hit a bump. I suggested that it "might be a tie rod" issue. I'm not a mechanic, it was only a suggestion. Mike's team of "technicians" replaced the tie rods and the problem persisted. I am certain that they did not test drive the car before or after the fix. It cost me over $800 for something that did not need to be replaced. I brought the car in at 8AM, this was on a Friday, and waited all day for word on the issue. Friday at around 5PM I get a call telling me that hadn't determined what was wrong yet and " It is going to be expensive" and " Do you need it for the weekend?" That was a bizarre call. I brought it back on Monday, they looked at it and told me that I had $2k worth of damage on my suspension. As it turns out, I had a tire issue that was a easy and inexpensive fix. I can't prove it, there seems to be a tiered level of service and it is tiered by an assumption of customers who seem well off and those who are not. Additionally, their "technicians" are not ASE certified and not qualified to diagnose your car correctly or intentionally replace parts that are not broken. I'll start by saying the guys here are very nice and I wanted so much for them to make it right. They tried three times. Got brakes fixed here within a year I have been back three times. They have never stopped squeaking or felt safe since the fix, just took to another place after spending over $600 with mikes and they said the brake pad is cheap and that is likely why the squeak. Wish I would have researched more on the cheap parts. So now I am spending another 120 for two new pads. Hope this is the end of this madness. read more
