Mike is SUCH a great mechanic! I moved to River Grove almost a year ago and have been taking my very high maintenance vehicle to him for multiple things. He's always able to fit me in quickly, is way more affordable than other mechanics I've been to, and is very honest and trustworthy. He's saved me in a bind on more than one occasion, and I'm so thankful to him and his team for that! I moved into the neighborhood 6 months ago and knew I needed to find a new mechanic. Having had both terrible and wonderful experiences with mechanics in the past, it was extremely important for me to find a mechanic I could trust. I asked on a neighborhood FB page for recommendations and also my daughter and son-in-law. Mike's came up several times. I dropped it off to have a long over due oil change and a good winter check as my car is 16 years old. Mike started with the oil change and like a good doctor or dentist started through a list of priority things to work on to keep my car going in good condition. Mike was honest and very helpful. I went to Mike's Auto Repair on January 28, 2016 because a rear brake pad had broken and was grinding the rotor. Since my car is 13 years old, I asked him to flush and replace the brake fluid too. He gave me a "Roughly $ 300 oral estimate, and I agreed. I took the car in the afternoon, and on my way home it was riding rock hard. Back to my garage I took off all the tires and noticed that the brake fluid drains (bleeds in mechanic's language) were never opened to drain the fluid, even though it was part of the $ 315 job, and it was reported as flushed in the receipt. I had the car inspected by another Auto Repair Shop, and the mechanics there confirmed in writing that the "Bleeds Were Never Opened! I took pictures of the dirty and crusted with dirt brake drains as proof that were not opened -and fluid flushed, and confronted Mike. He denied. I filed a Consumer Fraud Complain with the Illinois Attorney General, File No: 2016-CONSC-00020693, for auto repair scam, and the Illinois Attorney General demanded a response to the complain from Mikes Auto Repair Shop on February 19, 2016. He has not answered! With 100% proof by photographic evidence and expert verification on file that the $ 150 brake flush fluid was an "auto repair scam," he probably hired a lawyer who advised him not to answer the Attorney General's complaint and see where it goes. But there is more. When I checked my tire pressure after the job to see why my car war driving rock hard with a Sears Best Tire Pressure Gauge, my Front Right tire had 79 psi pressure, the Front Left had 71, the Rear Right had 64, and the Rear Left had 57. I checked my tire pressure before I went in because I have seen auto repair scams cases on the CBS "60 Minutes" of crook mechanics squirt oil on the car shocks and tell the customer his shock leak and he needs knew, or over-inflate the tires, the car rides rock hard, and when the customer goes back they tell them he needs news shocks. I deflated my tires back to 29 PSI as Toyota recommends, and I know now Mike tried to pull a phony 4-Shock replacement job on me. I din't bite the bait, an that is why this effort by Mike to pull a second auto repair scam on me is not in the Attorney General's Complaint. Attemp to defraud someone is not a prosecutable offense. I am sending a copy of my complain to CBS "60 Minutes", though, to see if they want to feature this on national TV. I will provide updates here on how this case might evolve. Until then, here my my warning: Avoid owner owned repair shops where the owner has an incentive to scam customers and pocket the loot. Go to national chains like Firestone, Goodyear, PepBoys, etc. The intake advisor takes the order, the technician does what is written in it, and there is no way by the workers to fool the computerized systems and pocket money. Plus you ca complaint to higher ups. Plus those chain mega-companies follow the Illinois Law, Section 815 ILCS 306/50 that mandate that each car repair facility must write and print a job order which the customer check and sign before any work is done. Mike's doesn't, and I requested the Attorney General to cite him for non-compliance. I would update on this too however it evolves. For the record, I am a retired professor or political sciences that I have taken crooks all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court acting as my own attorney. Why did I take it that far? Because I have crooks! I don't do it anymore, because the courts I clogged and it take years to find justice. The best justice -thanks to the advent of the internet is to expose the the Auto Repair Shop predators, and prevent other consumers from becoming prey. Go with national auto repair chains if you want peace of mind. Those companies cannot risk an auto repair scandal that will sink their stock on Wall Street and lose $ millions of their value.
