To start, my family and I have been going to the same mechanic for over 50 years. One problem... my boyfriend and I just reallocated to Oak Park, and with this comes losing our go to in Cleveland. I have ventured out to others when I desperately needed service and my preferred couldn't get me in, and was always screwed over. The typical you "need" this, this, and this done to your car which led me to have a really poor experience with anything that needed to be done to my car - which had 200k miles on it, and made the process dreadful. Long story short, my boyfriend needed a routine oil change, tire rotation, and wanted to get a full inspection on the car since his just hit 100k miles. The car was also showing that he needed a new timing belt (something that pops up automatically when the car hits 100k, and has yet to be replaced) and we were supposed to be making a long drive the next day for a wedding. I decided to take the car since he had to work. I get to the shop and am immediately warmly welcomed by a nice smile and friendly hello from a man named Tyler. I told Tyler exactly what I wanted and didn't want anything else done besides what I said. I also told him that we ideally wanted to wait on the timing belt seeing as we had to leave for a long trip (I had my fingers crossed on this one since). He checked everything, and came to the waiting room to tell me I can make it there and back before the timing belt needs to be replaced, but that it should be replaced soon. THIS was what I wanted to hear. He also told me I needed new filters (I already knew this, oops), and too the time to show me how gross mine were, so I ended up getting new ones. He ended up giving me a little discount too, and explained, "we just try to do a little something for everyone". Amazing! After driving the car home, it has a completely different (but good) feel to it. Maybe it's in my head, but it truly does feel like it was taken care of properly. I have NEVER had this good of service from a mechanic in my life. Our Planet Automotive will be our new mechanic, and I'm so happy with the time Tyler spent with me on this. First time at a local automotive service, and I have no regrets. They were really friendly and ready to help out. I came here due to a flat tire and there were none of my regular auto-shops nearby. They helped me out with ordering a new tire for me and installing it the next day. The waiting area was very clean and tidy. Kinda like blood work... you gotta do what you gotta do to stay healthy, right? Sure thing. We took our car to a "drive by" oil change place. It was the only oil change our car had previous to Our Planet. Said "drive by" oil change place failed to return 6 out of 7 screws to keep the oil pan in place. Our Planet was kind enough to order the missing screws and install them (no labor charge). They were kind enough to fix the error and didn't make us feel too bad about it. I just had the pleasure of dealing with Our Planet. My daughter is going to college in Chicago and got a check engine light on her SUV. Living in Indianapolis I was worried about her trying to drive home to have it looked at. She took it to Autozone to have an idea of what the fault code was. They indicated either O2 sensor or catalytic converter. Being Labor Day weekend we felt we had little chance of getting it fixed. My daughter researched and found Our Planet. Found this place on Yelp and am SO happy I did! A little back story: My check engine light had come on a week or so before and my car would completely shut off while idling at a stop sign or red light. I took it to an unnamed national chain who told me it would be $1000+ to repair the problem causing the check engine light; I asked them if this was also what was causing the car to shut off and they said no, it was the battery. So I paid $300 for a battery (which didn't solve the problem as my car kept shutting off). I felt completely ripped off. They apparently didn't properly attach the cover for my air filter as it was dangling off when I took it to Our Planet Auto; Our Planet also found a tool that the other mechanic had left somewhere wedged in on the bottom of my car!!! Anyways... THEN, and so luckily, I took my car to Our Planet Auto. They gave me a quote in hours (that was LESS THAN HALF of the quote by the national chain auto shop), were so great on the phone (thanks Michael, you're a rockstar), and really explained what was going on with my car. AND they fixed it that day so I could pick it up by the time they closed at 6 PM. Also, they use this really cool website for your car's inspection- if anything is wrong they take a picture so you can ACTUALLY see what's wrong and write comments explaining it. After such a horrible experience at the other auto shop/mechanic, I am so grateful to Our Planet Auto for doing such a remarkable job both at fixing my old car up and at having such great customer service. Recently got my oil and filter changed on my 2014 subaru crosstrek. It runs so much better after the service here. It is not a rush lube job, it will take a little time; they also pointed out likely maintenance that will need to happen in the near future and took the time to explain it to me. My daughter lives in Oak Park and her brake light went on. I did work on her brakes the day before and I told her to have a shop replace the left front brake hose. She called and said Michael J. Torres gave her an estimate of $1,597.38 for repairs. A few examples of charges: change wiper blades $40.00. My daughter replaced them 3 weeks earlier along with an oil change. I questioned that and an employee said, "Well, 9 out of 10 times they need to be replaced." Did they even check the condition of her blades? Flush and change trans fluid. Her car has 73,000 miles, she never had her trans fluid flushed. A first year mechanic knows you never flush a transmission with more than 50,000 miles on it. If you do, you'll need a rebuilt with 6 months. Replace sensors: $809.82. After they were reset, have not come on. Recommendations: "Your front brakes are in good condition at this time but will need to be replaced in the near future. I replaced them with OE full ceramic pads the day before. These are only a few examples of 4 pages of eyewash. I picked my daughter's car up yesterday and I only had to pay $125.36 to get it back. On my way home I stopped at PepBoys bought a $28.97 front brake hose and repaired the problem. They tout themselves as $green$ mechanics, I now know why. We sputtered into Tyler's parking lot last year after our car began failing. After making an 8 hour trip back from OH with my daughter, we had stopped at the closest garage. I didn't know him from Adam and was extremely nervous. I had just lost my job and could ill afford 3-4K for a new transmission. Tyler looked at the car and told me that if it was, what he thought it was, the repair shouldn't be too bad. I was almost in tears when I went home so upset over the bad timing of this. He wound up replacing a pipe that had rusted out that led to the transmission -- I think the whole repair was like $270. He really saved the day- and still driving same car... I know everybody's car problems are different, but what I can say about Our Planet and Tyler is that he and his family run a business that is: friendly, honest and professional. read more

I wish I can give Our Planet Automotive 10 stars... I went in April to get my rear bumper replaced, and Mike was very reassuring that he could get it done for the price quoted by the insurance company of the person who rear-ended me. Mike and the crew made my car look like new again, and all with absolutely no hassle, and the bonus of great conversation. I discovered today, that someone had rear-ended my car again - deja vu - in the same spot as before, while my car was parked somewhere. Fortunately, nothing was cracked, but the bumper was again jutting out a bit. I brought it in to Mike an hour before closing, a bit distraught as I felt I was in a live version of 'Groundhog Day', but he cheerfully told me that I was 'in the family' and that he would take care of me before they closed. Sure enough, not only did they get the bumper back to its original position, but they also painted the white scrape so the blemish was barely noticeable! Thank you for taking such good care of my car - I really really appreciate your wonderful and welcoming approach to customer service, something that is often lacking at businesses these days. To top things off, my daughters are very much into being eco-friendly, and so it also feels great to know that Our Planet Auto is also environmentally conscious. I just took my car to Our Planet because there was a piece underneath that was rattling and my check engine light came on. I drive an old car so I wasn't sure what they would say. There ended up being some major problems with it, but Our Planet was great to work with. They were prompt and communicative about what was wrong. I probably have to get a new car so I hope not to have to visit a mechanic for a while, but if I do, I will definitely use Our Planet again. I highly recommend their service. read more

I really wanted to like this place because it is local and I support small businesses but after the experience we had I will not be returning and therefore cannot suggest anyone else do. My partner dropped off our car while I was out of town and had the worst experience. She left her car and they told her they would call before the end of the day. They never called and when she showed up later that night to get her car they had left for the day locking the keys in the building so she could not get into or take her car. When they told her the estimate was done she showed up and was charged $117 for services that were never authorized. When I called to ask about these charges I also had a very unfortunate experience. The gentleman I talked to was very rude and insisted that they did nothing wrong and that they got authorization to do work just by her bringing the car in. There was no written or verbal authorization for this service. At one point in the conversation I could overhear him talking to someone else in the background talking about me. I heard him say "this guy is out of his mind." He tried to tell me he said "Taurus." At that point I talked to the manager who was even more hostile. He kept calling me "Buddy" and then wanted to tell me about professionalism. At one point he told me "I deal with people like you all the time who are broke and try to get free stuff!" This is one of the rudest things I have even been told. He does not know either me or my partner or our financial status. All I want is to not be charged for things that aren't consented to. I have never been yelled at on the phone by a business manager before. This is just not a place I want to do business with. On top of it all their estimate came in $200 more than the next place we went to. read more

I failed the emission test, so I knew I had to get my car looked at. I pass by Our Planet everyday going to work in Oak Park so I looked at their website and really loved it. I called and spoke to a gentleman that was so nice and explained to me how the whole failed emission process works. I told him I would stop in to show him the failed emission sheet in a few days. I had a few things come up so I didn't call back right away. Michael followed up with me and I am so happy he did. He left such a nice message and really was concerned about my car. A few days later someone flagged me down when I was getting coffee at McDonald's and said my car was overheating and that I should get to a mechanic immediately. Since I was just a few blocks from Our Planet, I drove right there. Michael greeted me and remembered my whole situation. A few hours later he called me to tell me that I must have been hit while parked with a tow hitch which severely damaged my radiator and caused a lot of damage. I drove the car without knowledge of the damage, there was no exterior damage to the front of my car. I was extremely upset and worried because the kind of damage sounded very costly. Michael contacted my Allstate Insurance policy and submitted a claim. I would have never thought to do that. I am so unbelievably grateful, as Michael and Tyler worked very hard with the Allstate adjuster over several days to repair my car through an insurance claim. Allstate almost totaled out my car, which would have devastated me even more. Throughout the entire process, Michael gave me a phone call almost daily keeping me updated on each step, being very patient and explaining every detail to me. The entire experience with Our Planet has been 5 stars! Friendly, accommodating, dedicated and compassionate staff and quality, first class workmanship. I was totally impressed with this place last night! First off, I called them, as someone stopped me and told me my tire was flat. It actually was not totally flat, but I did not want to mess around with a potential tire issue in the winter. I called Our Planet Automotive at 4:20 pm, explained the situation to Peg, and she told me to come on over for help! They immediately fixed the tire issue and agreed to do a quick oil change too, which my old Honda needed! While my I waited with my kids, we relaxed in the super nice waiting room....I have never been to mechanic with such a nice waiting area! Tyler and Peg were so nice to my two kids who were not too thrilled to get out of Chinese class and have to sit for 20 minutes at the shop. Wanted to charge me about $400 to replace three bulbs on my Subaru (one brake light, one headlight, one small light). Upon our initial chat, they said it would be $250 max (even that's a lot). Called me less than an hour later saying it would be closer to $400 and that they wouldn't be able to get the car done until the next morning because they insisted on removing the bumper. They even said they gave me a discount. It's $400 WITH a discount? When I said no because it's too expensive, one of the techs said "By the way, five lights were out and we were only charging you for three." So it's an even bigger ripoff then? Am I supposed to be grateful for the "generosity"?? They ended up changing the brake light for $77 because I couldn't get my car back quickly enough. I ended up going to my regular mechanic who replaced the 2 front lights in 15 minutes and charged me $30. No bumper removal needed ;). read more

Update on this. I took my vehicle to GMC to be repaired. They were disappointed that these people still exist in their industry as they give it a bad name. There was nothing wrong with the fuel pump, and on inspection they believe that the injectors were damaged during the previous repair. They replaced them (for far less than I was being quoted by Our Planet) and the vehicle now runs perfect. I had them check over the original repair while I was there. They advised it was satisfactory. Lesson learned by me I guess. Go to a reputable (and ethical) dealer in the future. read more

Came here for a routine oil change and Tyler was able to diagnose and fix a problem headlight and my driver side door lock while completing the oil change. I didn't even have to ask him to check for those, and the price he quoted for the extra service was ridiculously cheap. Will definitely be back when my car needs some work. read more

He is reliable, knowledgeable, reasonably priced and I love that he focuses on being an environmentally conscious business. I usually take my car to him for oil changes, but this weekend I had a dire situation where my car broke down on my way to the airport and wouldn't start. My flight was in 1.5 hours and I panicked. I called Tyler who contacted a tow truck who got there in 15 minutes and towed it directly to the garage. Tyler repaired my car while I was out of town and it was ready for pick up when I returned 2 days later.
