I discovered Mike and his barbershop about a year ago when I was walking around FiDi. And I have relied on Mike for haircuts ever since. Mike's barbershop is not at street level, so don't despair if you don't see a storefront when you are standing outside 29 John Street ... just walk down the stairs. I have only seen Mike in his shop, so I assume he is a solo practitioner. While Mike is very popular, you can find times when you don't have to wait. Regardless, Mike has a row of comfortable chairs if you end up waiting as he works with another client, and his TV generally has Netflix or Hulu playing. Mike is easy to talk to. We generally chat about the latest crime documentary or comedy show that is streaming. Before you know it, Mike would have finished the haircut and met or exceeded your expectations. Of course, with a face and hair like mine, he can only do so much. I sure hope Mike's business thrives. I saw a review that a haircut was $12. I knew it wouldn't be that low but thought the prices would be good. My haircut was $30 and they only accept cash. Got a decent haircut, nothing special. Maybe if I can't find another spot I would come back but wouldn't make an appointment. The store was also pretty dirty and hair was everywhere that looked like it's been there for a while. read more

If I could give Mike 10* I would do so gladly! Since my first visit to his shop in 2017, and everytime I was in NYC (I live in DC), I would make a beeline to Mike's Barber Shop! Mike listens to his customers, and has mad barber skills. And there's always that hot towel at the end! Then.. The pandemic happened. There are lots of barbers around this area of town and after trying many of them, I can truly say that Mike's is without a doubt the best of the bunch. Mike gives a quality, professional cut every time at an affordable and reasonable cost, which is why I'll keep coming back time and time again. Found my new favorite barber! Been going to mediocre spots in and outside the city for years and finally decided to roll the dice at a new place closer to work. And it paid off. Now I get a quick, no-nonsense precision cut, and none of the rushing or distraction that often leaves a customer less than thrilled when he gets home and really checks out the new 'do. I happened to be passing by and thought it looked like a mediocre place to get a haircut; I was wrong. Dead wrong - because this place is awesome and Mike rocks! Mike's got this. Let me say I've been in the financial district since 2013 and Mike was the first and is the last person I would let cut my hair. He's affordable, skilled, and always give me exactly what I want in a hair cut. Yes, this place is no frills, but you're getting your hair cut at a great price. I always tip him extra because he's awesome and my hair comes out the way I want it to. Mike was great. I'm mixed with a unique grade of hair, and I have actually been turned away by certain salons - actually refused service. ( Yes, I will write a review on that so people don't have the same experience that I had). Back to Mike...Great place. I walked into a very clean and calm. He told me that he would cut my hair in 10 minutes and that's what happened. He is a great conversationalist and has a great sense of humor. He has a diverse clientele and from what I saw, does a great job with everyone. He specializes in men's cuts, so if you are a man and need a cut, don't hesitate. I had fun, got a great haircut, and finally found a barber in the city that made me feel comfortable. All for $15!! read more
