This place takes a totally 'too cool for school attitude' and doesn't listen to customers. * A tiny bit of water went on my computer keyboard on a flight from the UK. Some of the keyboard went weird and I had a book manuscript on it. So I go in, very nervous. The first thing I said to the person who saw me was: "I am really upset about this. Don't make it worse by saying I shouldn't have got water on my computer. I know that.' What does she do? Lecture me on not getting water on my computer. * Next she tells me that I COULD get it fixed but it would probably still go wrong eventually because it will corrode.. This was despite me saying only a small amount had gone on it. She wasn't listening. Guess what she suggests? A new model - but fails to tell me the one she is selling me will need all new attachments/plugs etc/an extra device for USB etc. * So I buy the computer and the deal is they migrate my stuff over. Guess what? When I get back to the UK, I go to the Apple shop here and it turns out the have migrated all the Malware too. UK Apple store look at my original computer and say its only had the tiniest bit of water on it anyway - and they fix it for £220. But in the meantime I am $2000 dollars down with malware on a new computer I don't need. Just crap. * I forgot this too-before I left NY I also called them to as the battery on my new compute was running down really really fast - like a per cent a minute. The girl immediately tells me "Bring it in" like I have nothing else to do on my last day in NY. I also said it felt very hot. Her genius advice was ' Are you using on a duvet. that might be making it hot". I have only had 10 macs - what a revelation - just so patronising. Again not really listening. This means I also had to take my new mac aswell into the London Apple store, necessitating another day of lost work on a deadline. The Apple guy simply explained it was due to the fact my new computer was trying to back up my photo library. Now it's fine. So, all in all, a very similar experience to some of the other people on here - but as Mike's don't seem to be improving their customer care, it seems they couldn't care less. Someone should manage this place better and get the staff trained up better with a better attitude. Why are Apple recommending them as an alternative? read more

DO NOT use this shop for anything! They are not competent, and they make problems worse. I tried them 5 times for different things on different hardware because I always try small businesses over large ones, but they 1. DATA RECOVERY on 2 iOmega RAID EXTERNAL DRIVES: They did NOT recover data on either of 2 Raid drives, and they gave me the SAME paperwork (with the same serial numbers, etc) for BOTH drives, and without attending to my own numbers, referred to one as "Drive 1" without stating which that was. AND now the power supply doesn't even stay on when connected (and I tried other power supplies, too). One had only a problem with the SWITCH, but they could do nothing. The Apple store on 14th St, which still has them on their list, is about to remove them because when I said I was surprised, the Genius Bar people there told me EVERYONE has been telling them the same thing. 2. REINSTALL OS on iMac27". I had an OS I liked and that worked with all my software. They suggested I upgrade to ElCapitan, and I asked "Will my software still work." I was assured it would. Guess what??? I had to purchase all new software! AND, I had left the iMac for the 3 weeks I was in EU, expecting it to be ready when I returned. Guess what? They hadn't even started! 3. LAPTOP CLEAN & REINSTALL. As I was giving my order to one man at the desk, another one whipped it up and said, "This is for recycling, right?" He would have junked my laptop! 4. DATA RECOVERY on Lacie EXTERNAL DRIVE: a. They were able to put the new data on a Lacie Rugged, BUT IT FAILED! b. After lecturing me about keeping drives right-side up and not shaking them, etc, they put the drive platform upside down! I had to go back again for correction, and to transfer to another Lacie Rugged. 5. When I came to the shop to pick up an order, EVERYONE was out to lunch at the same time. So, after my trusty iPhone 10 got flattened, I purchased a 13 thru AT&T, my carrier. I took both to Apple on Prince St., NYC. There I received a double dose of indifference mixed w/ unveiled impatience and hostility from their tatted "genius" and "greeter" at the door who are there to up sell you a new device and not actually help you solve the problem you're having with the one they just sold you less than 24 hrs ago. They reluctantly only provided me w/ the name of their Apple "authorized" data retrieval chop shop underling Mike's Tech Shop approx 2 miles away. Mike's only guarantee is that the 10 couldn't be fixed, they would charge a $75 diagnostics fee + $500 data retrieval/ transfer fee to see IF they could retrieve some or all of the data and transfer it to the new 13 I just purchased. And it would take 2 weeks to turn around. *AVOID MIKE'S TECH SHOP and APPLE on PRINCE ST, NYC* I instead did some searching and located NEW YORK COMPUTER HELP on Greene St., NYC... which is approx 100 yards away (that's ONE HUNDRED YARDS AWAY!) from the Apple on Prince St. There Gabriel and Johnny repaired/ replaced the screen on my flattened 10 for $108. I had it back in 3 hrs. They could not have been cooler and I will sing their praises to anyone needing help w/ their devices of all kinds. While this is a 0 star review for Apple on Prince and Mike's on 20th st, this is a 5 star PLUS review for NEW YORK COMPUTER HELP, Johnny, and Gabriel. If you want to read this review again, look for my 0 star review of Apple on Prince St and Mike's Tech on 20th St. NYC. Lastly (and not surprisingly) I took the liberty of informing the Apple greeter and genius about their neighbors down the block (after all they're right there) and gave them a few of NY Computer Help's cards. I went to Mike's Tech Shop earlier this year on the suggestion of a friend. My laptop was still under warranty, but I couldn't get a timely appointment at any of the Apple stores, and I dare not go to WreckServe. So off I went to MTS. My fan and sound card were acting up and they fixed them, speeding things up when I had to bring "lappie" back when something else broke down. They were helpful, polite and very knowledgeable. I was also impressed with the ratio of female to male techies, and that no one talked down to the customers. Additionally, the store, though small, is streamlined, well-lit and completely inviting. They have a few peripherals, but it's mostly good old mac hardware, with a little software thrown in. Just last week, i realized I needed a bigger hard drive. I called around to price labor and parts. MTS was slightly more expensive then NYU, but could turn it around in 1/3 of the time, plus they had the bigger hard drive for only $25 more. I get there and the wonderful tech charged me HALF PRICE for the labor, since I had already backed up all my data and it was an easy job. They told me it would be done in 2-3 days, it was done in 2-4 HOURS! WHAT??!??! I will only go to MTS. They are the best, give them your business. read more

I took my Macbook Pro to Mike's for data recovery after having spilled liquid on the keyboard and it shutting down. I initially took it to Apple who diagnosed it as needing a replacement of majority of inner components. Mike's suggested letting their technicians dry and clean the components first rather than data recovery with the goal of not losing anything stored. While i don't think Apple's genius bar did anything wrong in their diagnosis, Mike's Tech Shop is just a far more sophisticated repair option. I got my Mac back 100% restored after about 9 business days - I didn't lose a thing. Even better, they got it done at half the cost I was quoted by Apple even with Apple Care discount. If you have encountered a similar issue I would not hesitate going with Mike's. Their shop is professional, sophisticated and they achieved a remarkable result with what was thought to be a total loss. Terrible place to bring your Mac, or any device or computer for that matter. They think they are hip, but they are only frustrated Apple rejects or wannabes. Yes they ARE racist and treat blacks, and females who are on the straight and narrow, horribly - you can feel it as I did! And as I waited for my computer to be brought out of the back (or wherever they sent it), a white male was treated with far more respect than me! This place was great. Two separate people walked me through the costs and benefits of getting a new computer (mine had some pretty much irreparable damage). Everyone answered my questions clearly and let me spew out indecisive thoughts for ~30 minutes with no pressure at all. Once I figured out what I wanted to do, I worked with Eric Diaz to get everything set up. He was amazing! So friendly and genuinely had my best interests in mind. He stayed until the very last second with me and almost missed his bus in the process, working to make sure everything was all set for me. I got a call the very next day saying everything was ready, transferred, and set to be picked up. I'll definitely be going here in the future for any Mac repairs that I need! Thanks, Eric! read more

Bought a MacPro at Mike's Tech Shop in October. Instead of buying online, I decided to have more personalized service. I was not disappointed, in fact I was pleasantly surprised. The crew there are amazing (I was helped and guided by Sara). I was not talked into the most expensive option, but into a config which would serve my purposes. The support synchronized the new desktop with my laptop. When it turned out, that the model was not entirely compatible with my work, the tech guys and Sara did extensive research with Apple and they upgraded my model so that it would work. And, what' more, Sara called me some weeks later, to check if my setup is fully functional. It cannot get any better than this.! read more

The absolute best! I initially called for help removing viruses, and was interested in their remote services. I couldn't, however, complete the authorization form via email, so decided to come in. When I did, I contacted the manager Jerica, who was so helpful over the phone, and she immediately remembered me. She brought me the form to complete and tech specialist Evangeline to fix my computer issues. As she was repairing my laptop, she walked me through each step, and showed me exactly how she was repairing it. My girlfriend's MacBook Pro crashed and we thought that she may have lost a year worth of work. Once we arrived we were greeted immediately after we walked in the door and within a few minutes Rubin knew exactly what was wrong with her laptop. Told us he would have it fixed before they closed that day. In no time we got a call from Rubin and was told it was ready for pick up. The computer is working perfectly... all her files are still there and all is good. Bonus: We forgot that her Macbook insurance was still in affect. Rubin done some digging and guess what .. I put off taking my mac into be serviced after it began flashing a bizzare series of hieroglyphics at me because of the hassle I imagined I'd have based on my experience with a shop that shall remain nameless but has Tekserve in it's name. My friend Jessica said I needed to try Mikes' and since her whole life revolves around being able to use her mac for work...Mine turned out to be an easy fix, but I was surprised that they were able to turn the fix around in hours.... Mike's was the third place we went and they solved the issue in 20 minutes! AppleCare sent us to an authorized dealer who said they couldn't fix it. They sent us to the Apple Store where we waited for FOUR hours but weren't able to see anyone. A few days later we found Mike's online and took the MacBook in. They told us all the different possible outcomes before they took it in the back. They were incredibly thorough and took their time giving me options. In the end they were able to fix it REALLY FAST when Apple care completely failed me. Next time I won't even bother with the Apple Store. I'm just going right to Mike's! read more

My iphone stopped working and Apple could not help without wiping it clean, risking loss of all of my photos and messages. I went to Mike's Tech Shop for help and Angela was wonderful! She found what I was told previously was wrong, discovered how to access my data, and resolved the problem....all while handling an emotional person fearing loss of very important messages!! She stayed after closing to ensure my settings were restored and I would not have same storage problem that shut my phone down to begin with. Very competent and professional. WOW. I went to Mike's Tech after I bought a new Apple and the Apple Genius's could not perform a data transfer. Mike's was able to run analytics and retrieve most of my data and make the transfer. They kept me up to date each day on the progress and what was happening. They clearly explained the problems and options. And guess what? Their professionalism, knowledge and real sympathy calmed me down. They also provided a lot of info as to the choices I could make moving forward for backing up my data to avoid the problem again. I have my ups and down with this place. The first time I came here I brought my iPhone and they did an amazing job and fixed it quick. The second time eh not so much. I brought my mac laptop here and I just felt like they wanted to get more money out of me. I don't understand why? The first time I came the guy was extremely knowledgable and then the second time a different guy didn't really take the time to explain anything or do anything for me. I shopped around before going to Mike's. First, I went the Apple Store, talked to a Genius who told me that I needed a new hard drive. Then went to Tekserve where they also told me that I needed a new hard drive and quoted me a price $35 more than Apple!?! I went to Mike's where they took the time to actually look at my computer and assessed that it wasn't a hardware problem, but a software issue. Not only did they save me $200+, but they were also able to save all my info (that I hadn't backed up) and refused payment for their labor. I love Mike's!!! Repair was done on my laptop and iMac. The business is great. There was however an unfortunate conflict somewhere between the OS and my Adobe software - not their fault. After spending hours trying to resolve it myself, I gave up. Enter Patrick. Somehow he managed to trouble shoot the problem until such point as he resolved the conflict. I truly didn't think he'd be able to sort it out, but sort it out he did!! And as I was under massive time pressure, I was incredibly grateful. Great job Patrick-thanks!! This place is AWESOME!! Better than the Apple Store!! My daughters laptop recently crashed unexpectedly. We were out of warranty and didn't know where to turn.
