My experience this past weekend at Unagi was not the best! The sushi is still really good for the price...but they don't seem to even know what the term "gluten free" means..... Usually, sushi places are safe for people with a gluten allergy / celiac. Well, when I dined in with one of my best friends who cannot eat gluten, the server seemed confused by all the questions she asked like "do you have gluten free soy sauce?" and "is the noodle salad made with rice noodles?" That was such a big red flag, but we ordered anyway. She got the Funky Margarita Roll, which according to the menu, had no ingredients that included gluten. When the roll came out, it was COVERED in tempura flakes. She sent it back, then ordered a regular tuna roll. The tuna roll was fine but it was just tuna and rice So, if you are thinking of coming here with someone who is gluten free, don't. There are many other sushi restaurants in the city who can accommodate a gluten allergy better. read more

I was doing a little shopping next door and was craving a salmon box. I've seen this place dozens of times but I always forget about it until I'm in the area. I asked the server how many pieces come in their salmon box and she told me 8. I received the order and it was 6 pieces. It just tasted off..salmon was fresh but the imitation crab was super dry and the rice wasn't the greatest. I was starving so I ate it but this salmon box wasn't great at all. I've eaten this tons of times so I do know what it should taste like. I didn't receive anything to eat it with in my to go bag. Just stumbled upon this place while I was visiting my family in Louisiana. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but the place is pretty good. The flavors are decent, the portion sizes and presentation are great, and the overall taste is great. I gave 4 stars solely on the sushi being a tad warmer than I like. It wasn't like warm warm, but it wasn't cold either. The service was excellent, our waiter was amazing. All my years living in Louisiana before moving to Texas I never knew this place existed. For the price of three pieces of scallop sashimi I opted for the scallop roll - "marinated scallop and cucumber" thinking it would be fresh and interesting ... but it was all tons of cucumber and krab salad! The service here is a little slow, and everytime I come in the place seems to be almost empty. You don't get a hot towel, and the service is not very welcoming either. Almost every roll on the menu has cucumber, even rolls that normally don't. The scallop roll I got was mostly cucumber rather than scallop. The dynamite roll was so gross I couldn't eat it. The texture is horrific: slimy, fatty, and basically just fish mush. The rolls were very small. For $20, I can go to Mikimoto and get WAY better sushi in a nicer atmosphere. read more

I missed the store the first time around, it was right next to the street. Small but decent interior with two manned sushi counter. Didn't take photos because both were not busy at the time. Friendly waitress served us but I wasn't quite used to her English at the first so I was wondering about the 'noodles' she was going to bring. Menu selection seemed to be directed towards cooked seafood rather than raw sushi, etc. (i.e. wider range) and it took me a while to feel the menu selection, but I settled on store name item: Unagi. Small salad came with and also miso soup. I noticed that the soup had an after taste I don't remember having in any miso I had before so it was different. Not bad maybe, just different, still I didn't like it too much, it tasted chemical-ly. And we weren't excited about the dish that came out, presentation was good but off of what we expected in unagi dish, and the amount was disappointing (rice, sauce, etc.). My Japanese coworker commented no more than three stars. To me, it just felt like too much Chinese imitation of a 'Japanese' restaurant. Food tasted pretty good, so no complaints there. read more

Great sushi for a great price! My wife and I had lunch at Unagi and Sushi. We ordered the Chicken Teriyaki Bento Box and a Beef Teriyaki Bento Box. Miso soup and salad as starter are part of the meal. The service was good, fast and friendly. The food tasted great! Although the bento boxes with the included appetizers were plenty for a lunch meal, we indulged and ordered another sushi roll just because it tasted good. Ugh just thinking about this place makes me shake my freaking head in disappointment. The waiter we had wasn't very friendly. I felt like we were tolerated the whole time there. The food wasn't that great either. The soup was okay and so were the noodles. the sushi on the other hand was awful. It wasn't very fresh, tasted really old to me. Old girl had no complaints at first, A couple of days later she told me that she got sick off of her food. I didn't have that problem but I guess I was lucky. But still I feel that eating here is almost like playing a game of Russian roulette. The staff was really nice and accommodating. I ordered my rolls to go and so didn't really use table service.... The rolls were fine if basic. Everything tasted good...but I did my usual and declined the sauces on top. I hate gooey sauces on top of rolls. I think this makes me an unAmerican sushi eater. I had a couple of rolls...and they were good so there's that. Next time I might try the sushi. I do like that they have online ordering...not that I tried it since y'know, driving.
