We came to LA for a visit this past week and decided to try this restaurant because of all the great reviews. Overall, the food was good, ambiance was really nice, and our server greeted us warmly at the door. Service was attentive throughout our meal, until we found what appeared to be a caterpillar in our water, likely from the fresh mint in the water pitcher. We politely brought it to the attention of our server and simply asked for a new pitcher of water. Unfortunately, her initial response was, "It's just mint," without really taking a closer look. It felt like our concern was dismissed rather than taken seriously, even though it was clearly not mint. We ended up asking another server, who immediately helped us by replacing the water pitcher without hesitation. We appreciated how quickly they handled it, but by then we already felt uncomfortable continuing our meal because of how our concern had been addressed the first time. When we brought it up again, the server apologized profusely after seeing our video of the caterpillar moving. While I appreciate that she eventually acknowledged the issue, I wish the same level of concern had been shown from the beginning instead of only after we had evidence. I understand that mistakes can happen, especially in restaurants. Finding something unexpected in food or drinks is unfortunate but not necessarily a deal-breaker. What matters most is how it's handled. Unfortunately, the initial dismissal of our concern left a sour taste in our mouths and ultimately made us feel uncomfortable eating there. I hope this was just an isolated incident and that the staff takes future concerns more seriously. read more

After attending an event across the street, lunch was the next item on the schedule. Not wanting to venture far, I appreciated Mikomi's proximity to where I was and appreciated their lunch special offerings. They have a spacious interior, so our table of two didn't wait at all for a mid-weekend lunch and we got the last booth facing the main street. I originally eyed the bento boxes, but got won over by the chirashi lite ($23.95), which also comes with a small salad. It came with rice, seaweed salad, tamago, shrimp, masago, and four kinds of mixed sashimi (with 2 pieces each). Really refreshing and filling, just enough that I had nothing left over but enough for me to be full! If you share your photos on Yelp or Google, you can also supplement your meal with some ice cream or ramune. Since I was full, I opted for the ramune. There are public parking structures within walking distance with the first 90 minutes free, or you can find metered street parking, or get regular street parking if you go further. Mikomi is towards the tail end of 3rd Street Promenade, so it's also a nice walk away from shopping and the beach and pier! read more

I ordered the Kiss of Fire ($17.00), which has spicy tuna and cucumber topped with albacore, ponzu, chili oil, and a jalapeno slice. It had a nice spicy flavor, and I added wasabi to kick up a notch. It came with 8 pieces, which felt a bit small. I haven't had sushi in a while, and it's definitely gotten more expensive. I suppose these are Santa Monica prices, so it's understandable. Mikomi was a short drive/medium walk from our hotel - the Sandbourne, which made it a great choice for dinner. I had been craving quality sushi but didn't want to make the spend or drive out to Nobu Malibu from Santa Monica. We ordered the Las Vegas (tempura), Eel & Avocado, Baked Salmon, and Kiss of Fire Roll. All were delicious in their own way, but my favorites were the Eel & Avocado and Baked Salmon rolls. The baked salmon was so fresh and had an amazing flavor along with the Eel. The interior was nicely decorated for the holidays with a Christmas tree and decorations. One unique aspect of the dining experience that I haven't seen at other sushi spots was Bella the robot who delivered our rolls to the table. Cons: Prices are expectedly high, especially considering the area (Santa Monica). The yelp menu doesn't reflect the actual menu. For example the happy hour is only available during the weekdays, not everyday. Everything was pretty solid! The Bluefin Tuna Yukke was excellent -- fresh, flavorful, and complex thanks to the sauce, wasabi, and maybe even a hint of honey. The only thing I would have preferred is if it hadn't been quite so cold; served a little warmer, it would've been even better. The Sunomono Salad was refreshing and tasty, perfectly balanced. The Baked Salmon Roll was outstanding -- the fish was soft and well-seasoned, and the inside of the roll was just as delicious. Honestly, I think the baked rolls are the star here. Same goes for the Baked Scallop Roll: the scallop was juicy and well-cooked, the sauce was amazing, and the caviar on top was a nice touch. Both rolls were a bit warm and fell apart easily, but the flavor made up for it. Finally, the Golden California Roll was also good. The fish was fresh and tasty, though the tempura shrimp inside was a little cold. The service was excellent -- when my chopsticks fell on the floor, they immediately brought me a new pair before I even had time to react. The only downside was the ambiance, which felt a bit empty and could have used more energy. They offered bottomless sake bombs at $18 for a 60 minute limit. Great atmosphere and friendly staff. For my food: I ordered their Sushi combo: 8 pc. Sushi with tuna, salmon, yellow tail, albacore, shrimp, amberjack and 2 pieces of chef's choice. My favorite from this dish were: Tuna, salmon shrimp and yellowtail. I received an octopus one but it was too chewy and rough for me. Still 4/5 Baked Salmon Roll: For me, it's a must to try their version. It comes with imitation crab, avocado, baked salmon, eel sauce. 5/5 warm, delicious, flavorful and chunky. Seaweed salad: 3/5 it was a tad bit too slimy for me in consistency and a little too sweet. 6 pc Gyoza: 5/5 crunchy, flavor was pork, generous portions and delicious overall. Sesame Salmon Carpaccio: had mango slices which elevated each bite. This is what Santa Monica has been missing! An affordable japanese resturant with a huge menu. My fiancee and I were able to get stuff from there izakaya menu + sushi with fat pieces of fish. We got their yakitori, a baked roll, nigiri and a couple other dishes. It felt like Japanese tapas! The waiter explain what some of the dishes since we were open to trying new things.
