Quite a beautiful rooftop restaurant located in the very fancy Santa Monica. Came here as part of a work dinner, so I was in a large group (12 people almost!). The beauty of Mediterranean food is that it's perfect to share with large groups. Because I had some fellow vegetarians (and veg friendly people) with me, ordering was quite fun. We almost ordered every vegetarian mezze, which included: Mezze sampler: the Muhammara was my favorite of them all and the naan was amazing. Very soft, but flavorful. Sprouted cauliflower: interesting way they made it. Golden tahini had a nice touch. Pickled vegetables: loved them Greek fries: can't go wrong with that Roasted sweet potato: surprisingly quite good and a very different palate from the fries. Baked feta: interesting, but this wasn't a fan favorite amongst the group. While our non-vegetarian colleagues enjoyed the octopus, we were nearly full with just the mezze. We decided to go ahead and order the mushroom skewers while the other side enjoyed the tomahawk. Everyone was full after all this food. The cocktails kept flowing. I stuck with just one Urfa mezcalita while enjoying the views for the remainder of the night. This lasted until dessert where plenty were ordered. I got a chocolate gelato not realizing I'd get two scoops. Sadly I could only finish one scoop. Anyhow, there are heaters all over the rooftop so that people can enjoy throughout the year. They do have to crank it up as needed, but it's there. Can't mention price much because this was work sanctioned, but it was a great decision. read more

Once we got our reservation, the fun began! Chelsea was our server and she was a pivotal part of our experience. We asked for recommendations and she nailed everything. We loved the hummus spread, so good! I opted for beer, but how to choose? Well she made me a mini flight - I opted for the hefe. And when another table mate ordered a round of house tequila shots, I wasn't expecting one of the smoothest tequilas I've ever had as the option. Plus it was a generous pour. The views were spectacular, and while we were basically outside, there are plenty of space heaters to make you feel cozy. I highly recommend making reservations as this is a popular spot. The other weekend me and some friends had a really great time eating here, so it deserved a shout out on Yelp. I've lived in Santa Monica for 8 years now and I never knew this rooftop bar/restaurant existed. Restaurants in hotels tend to get missed by me which is exactly what this is: a rooftop bar in a hotel with a great view of Santa Monica. The cuisine is Mediterranean and the menu is pretty limited, so picky eaters beware. If I were to offer one suggestion it would be to make sure and get some appetizers. We had a lot of them and they were excellent. If I'm honest, they were even better than my entree. The pita spread is elite. We had the pleasure of meeting, Sonny, at the restaurant and, although he wasn't our server, he was a fantastic host and even ended up giving us a brief tour of the hotel. Unfortunately I did not try much off the menu so I can't speak to the food that much, but the atmosphere was one of the best I've ever experienced. Such a great rooftop and so beautiful, all I wanted to do was sip wine on and watch the sunset. We ordered the mezze platter which was definitely overpriced but the board was HUGE and I enjoyed the fresh variety of vegetables. I did feel like the rest of the menu items seemed pricey as well, but again, I don't want to speak on them without ordering, seeing the portion sizes, and tasting the dishes. The main seating section was closed off the day we went but luckily we were still seated right away. I love the interior of the whole hotel. Our waiter was okay, a bit forgetful. But that's okay because the food was sooooo tasty. The labne was 10/10 with whatever seasoning they put on their warm pita. Craving it again thinking about it now. Their chicken breast was lightly seasoned but great. The only thing we weren't that impressed with was their cauliflower. The yellow sauce it sits under is too bitter. Impeccable dining and service with an unbeatable view. I had quite a few cocktails each one was handled with precision and care the taste quite amazing each ingredient complimenting the beverages. I tried 2 dishes the chicken and the potatoes. Both dishes were excellent and flavorful I left full. Very few places in Santa Monica offer such an amazing view. I would include it but I only took a video and not a photo. The service staff has tried many things on the menu drinks and food included enabling them to guide you to a proper choice. I met a few many people and dealt with so many names that I forgot the name of my bartender.I did ask for it and I thought I wrote it down. Calabra is a rooftop bar in Proper, though at times it may feel like it's mainly for Proper guests. The walk into the lobby and elevator to the top floor was a nice experience. There was definitely a small sense of status when the host asked whether we were staying at the Proper, since there were different seating areas for guests vs non-guests. With regards to food, everything is definitely on the pricey end (think Erewhon). However, after ordering food for our party of three and trying each one, it's really hard to knock the price. We had: Mezze Sampler: Try all their dips (muhammara, hummus, baba ganoush, fava bean & pea dip... with naan and crudite. It's hard to get excited over dip, but this is one to get excited ove.r The fava bean & pea was a hit-miss, though not hateable - moreso dry and less preferred. Even a dip as regular as hummus was done well (though less exciting than their muhammara and baba ganoush). Green Shakshuka: Ever have regular (red) Shakshuka? This is its green cousin, best described as salsa verde is to regular red salsa. It definitely comes with a kick and tastes like it with except the toppings expected of a shakshuka. Fattoush: Even something as regular as a salad, Calabra chefs have found a way to make this exciting, too. The sumac pita croutons and vinaigrette were on the stronger side if you aren't expecting it or are not used to sumac. If you are, this is a great salad. If not, it will definitely come off a tad too sour, almost as if drinking lemon juice. Chicken Souvlaki: Nothing beats a good grilled chicken... Mint? Dill? Yes, please! By this point, we were stuffed, but we still kept because it was THAT good. Our server AJ was great at taking care of us during the entire dining experience, refilling our water multiple times. Though seating was very tight (one of us bunched up against their plants), we enjoyed the eats, the views, and the walk to the beach and and 3rd Street Promenade. After paying the bill, the correct final amount has still not been adjusted even after a week, but regardless, I'm looking forward to the next dining experience here already! read more

Love the vibes of this rooftop! Came here for Sunday brunch, street parked right in the front. Ordered salmon tartare, crab toast, French toast, green shakshuka. Everything was very tasty and good quality. It's just really expensive, like $25 for each item. Service was pretty slow. Not giving one star because I actually liked the smoothies, besides the smoothies everything else was bad, food tested like the ingredients were very old and the only fresh thing was the water, we got the board with everything and appetizers, all of the veggies and lettuce tasted awful like they were 2 weeks old. I went to a cool dinner at Calabra last week, a party of about 25 people in the private event space of the Proper's rooftop restaurant. The rest of the rooftop looked nice, too, and was definitely happening for a brisk Thursday night in November. The event space was great, ideal for our group, with an upscale, comfortable salon atmosphere. There was an open bar and separate buffets for snacks and dinner. Plenty of table seating, though we mostly arranged ourselves in a central lounge area, like we were gathering in somebody's living room. The night was partially hosted by the Mary Dowling Whiskey Co. and I enjoyed a Kentucky Paloma with their tequila finished bourbon and sparkling grapefruit soda. The Proper was also hosting, and I had a glass of one of the wines they had on offer, I think the Lola pinot noir. The food was not the point of the evening, but it was quite solid, and suited to an easy buffet. I hit the dips and farmer's market crudite for round one: hummus, baba ganoush, and labneh with raw broccolini, carrot, cherry tomato, cauliflower, and fresh grilled za'atar naan. For the more dinnery part of dinner, I loaded up on fattoush, roasted carrots, jidori roasted chicken with cannellini beans, and Lebanese spiced rice with saffron and cranberries and walnuts. I especially liked that rice. I live too close to the Proper to stay overnight, and too far to hang out on the rooftop with much frequency. I'd go back to Calabra in an instant, though, for another evening like this one. read more

Slow, lackluster service. The waiters were not very well versed on the wine selection for an establishment of 5 star caliber. This pistachio baklava had great flavors but the ratio was completely off. There needed to be less crust on top for the other elements to shine. The matcha was acceptable. When you think of Aspirational Coast Los Angeles this should come to mind immediately. The beautiful rooftop makes you feel like you're in a resort world's away from LA but oddly somehow with a view of it. The ambiance of the bar area warrants a visit of its own. Food was fantastically presented and bowl licking flavorful. The steak and eggs came with perfectly crispy home cooked potatoes. I'm talking super crispy skins which of course compelled me to eat every single one of them. The shakshuka is a great bet and theirs has a twist....its green and slightly spicy. Surprisingly (and kind of hilariously), the food here is actually really good. I've been a few times now, including a special anniversary dinner with my girlfriend--and fellas, if you're looking for a solid date night spot, bring your girl here. The design and mood are perfect for a romantic evening. What impressed me most was how thoughtful the menu is. Finally! A restaurant and bar that knows great service. We had a platter to share and the naan bread was so soft and delicious. We then had the branzino which was made with a chimmichuri sauce. The General Manager Juan gave us some quality time by taking our picture at various spots from the roof top, which we really appreciated. Very beautiful location! I attended an event at this location and I must say it was the best location for the event. From the decor, the staff, the food, the drinks and the vibes, everything was perfect. I ordered the delicious humus platter and a prosecco. It was the perfect choice. The hummus was fresh and has the right amount of seasoning. People at my table had the salmon, chicken and the sprouted cauliflower along with their drinks. No one complained about their food. The salmon was the talk of the table. This will be one of my go to restaurants whenever I'm in Santa Monica with friends or family. Be sure to dress warm on colder nights. All of the designs at Proper are absolutely gorgeous. From the moment you walk into the hotel and onto the rooftop, you know time and thought has been spent. We stopped by Calabra at the Santa Monica Proper with our toddler on a night when half the restaurant was closed for a private event, and still had an amazing experience. The GM personally helped us get seated and went out of his way to make us feel welcome. I think his name was Juan -- he mentioned his niece lives near us in Vegas -- and he couldn't have been friendlier. The food was excellent (my wife and toddler both loved it), and the hospitality really stood out. It's rare these days to meet someone who makes you feel like a guest instead of just a customer. The only minor downside was that it got a little loud at times for the kid, but everything else more than made up for it. We'd absolutely stop by again and highly recommend Calabra to anyone looking for great food, great people, and a warm, memorable experience. read more

it's a beautiful view on top of a wonderful rooftop in a great location, but the food is basically plain old mediterranean with extra steps. my chicken was way too sweet (basically sugar slop), the hummus was bland, and the pita bread was basically right out of the vons bag to top it off, the bill was pushing $250 for two apps, two drinks, two entrees. great service and staff and cool bar at least. will not be coming here again. shame. read more
