milano takes its coffee seriously, and you can tell the moment you step up to the counter. there's two impressive and intimidating looking, industrial espresso machines behind the counter, everything is clean and organized. i've been in my matcha era lately, slowly making my way through iced matcha lattes around the city. the one at milano is pretty decent, smooth, earthy, and not overly sweet, with none of that bitter or chalky aftertaste you sometimes run into. i'm no expert, but it's definitely one i'd come back for. a nice change for the summer, too. the café has a modern setup with a sleek espresso bar, a full menu of coffee and tea options, and a neat lineup of beans on display. the lighting is bright, there's a handful of seating along the windows, and a couple of outside patio seating too. the vibe is laid back and easygoing, the kind of place where you can hang out solo with a drink or catch up with a friend without having to raise your voice. that sunny corner window seat is a prime spot for watching the world go by. if you're in the west end and looking for a coffee buzz, solid matcha or a mellow café to unwind in, milano coffee roasters is worth a stop. read more

I don't go to a ton of coffee shops but I had an hour to kill and this was perfectly convenient. I'm so happy I stopped in. The girls at the counter were very helpful and pleasant. The americano with a spot of heavy cream was delicious. There was a delightful group of locals to chat with while sitting at the nice sidewalk tables. There were lots of folks walking dogs and one even came over to say hi and get a scratch. Just the perfect way to spend a spare hour. read more

This tiny corner café on Denman/Haro is still one of my favorite afternoon coffee/tea places, and apparently quite a few neighbors agree. They've always got a chatty group of regulars outside and inside the café. Staff is hip and selectively friendly, though they treat everyone respectably well. While they make decent espresso drinks, go figure I usually don't get coffee when I'm here: They make one of my favorite London Fogs, though I'm also partial to the hibiscus tea. Even though this café's often busy, much of the crowd (and regulars) prefer to sit outside, so there's often at least a seat or two at the window or at the couple of inside tables. Like a lot of cafés it can be a bit warm inside during warmer months. The City provides (spotty) free wi-fi in the area so the café doesn't have wi-fi, though I think that plus the more social environment makes the tiny space a nicer one to hang out in. As with much of the West End, you're best off walking over here. Being in easy reach of Stanley Park and the Lost Lagoon is another big plus. read more

Stopped here briefly and decided to try their Killer Mocha, a darker mocha with dark chocolate shavings on top. It sounded like just my kind is thing and I was excited to try it, but while it wasn't bad by any means, it tasted surprisingly little like chocolate. Maybe the coffee/chocolate ratio was a bit too far on the coffee side for my taste; I can imagine others might like it, but it wasn't for me. We shared a little pastry too, which was fine. The space is quite small, with a few tables in cramped positions, and it didn't take much for it to feel overcrowded. There's some variety of snack food but nothing really inspiring. The staff were perfectly friendly too. It's a solidly decent place, but I'm not really left with a desire to return when there are other places that are cozier or serve better mochas. read more

With it's clean lines, soft and sweet coffee, Milano is a refreshing new little slice of the West End. With nothing more than a rainy Sunday afternoon and some quality time with a friend, I sipped on my Americano, marveled at the gelato (for next time) and wondered who the smartie was who spilled or sprinkled cinnamon nearby. It's a delicious smell! Between the coffee brewing and the gelato case, the space is tight, with bar stools and one 4 top table in the small front area. If you have a lot of time and don't mind being warm you might find this to be a perfectly fine place. I'm not sure where else to recommend... This is a cozy coffee shop with limited seating. We stopped by and bought a bag of beans to take home. Cashier asked if we wanted the beans grounded up. Service was friendly and efficient. Milano is by far one of the best places to get a coffee in the West End. But let's be realistic, It's pretty much the only coffee shop on Denman that sells good quality coffee. The guys that work there are super knowledgeable in their coffee-sense and their passion really shines through down to every drop they pour. Oh and not to mention, they are pretty easy on the eyes :) There's a couple seats inside (or outside in the non-rainy months), really, a great place to catch up with friends or grab a coffee on the go. They also sell Erin Ireland's delicious banana bread so that's always a bonus too and though I've never had it, they also serve gelato and have some sandwiches for purchase. read more

Popped in here on my way to English Bay and was surprisingly delighted at the cute decor, nice service, and menu options! I ordered the large turkaccino, which was enough for two of us to share. It was a blended drink with dark chocolate. Just based on the drink, I would give it three stars but our server was incredibly kind and helpful in explaining the menu options. Great Coffee and Service! I don't normally like to yelp unless it's really good or really bad. We tried the medium roast single drip coffee. We tend to like our coffee with less acidity. The medium roast coffee had a very clean finish and sweet aftertaste. While we waited for the single drip, Greg gave us a sample of his tasty blueberry gelato and grapefruit tart gelato. I'm not a coffee lover, but I was able to down the 16 oz coffee with a little bit of help from my wife. Greg was kind enough to give us a sample of the award winning Italian blend conca d'oro espresso. After trying it, we had to buy a bag of milano's Italian blend coffee because it was that good. My wife and I give it thumbs way up! Definitely would come back again especially if I come back to Vancouver. The only regret drinking that coffee and espresso is that I don't know when I'm going to fall asleep tonight. read more

I was looking for nice, welcoming small coffee shop, where they can appreciate local customer. I was very dissapointed. Coffee was very good, however service was pretty offensive. Guy and lady, both obviously upset about interrupting them from their lunch during working hours. Lady totally indifferent on the cash desk, can't wait to go back to her food. When the coffee was ready, the guy throw it to me on the desk like in some bad cowboy saloon, without a word, much less smile. Place wasn't very clean, music too loud. I have had the good coffee here on various occasions and the tall lady behind the counter is knowledgeable, providing very good service, paying attention to the details and catering to some very 'specific" coffee orders. The tasty- sounding sandwiches tempt me from the chalk board and I am sure they are good because they don't sit around all afternoon so I have yet to get one in time. It's great to see food in a coffee place that isn't defrosted or wrapped in plastic and the sweets look well chosen. But the gelato...squisito! I had the vanilla latte last week and before I even finished it (it didn't melt too fast which is a good sign) I considered going back up to the lady and banging my tiny shovel on the counter, saying, "More ! or "Un altro!" Probably one of the worst coffees I have ever had. Couple with some pretty sorry service. The girl seemed like she did not want to be there and that I was bother her with my order. She couldn't explain to me their pour over options' names, which I had to help her with as I work in coffee. She couldn't tell me about the roasts though I surmised it to be quite dark in the Italian style. And then proceeded to make the worst possible cup of coffee. She "made a pour over" using a hot water spout, my cup on the counter below and somewhere in the middle of the water flow was the v-60 with an unknown amount of coffee in it. She didn't move it around, she just stood there. I've never seen something so abhorrent! She stopped the water with the cup was full. I knew before the first sip it would be awful and it was. I threw it away. My gluten-free muffin had mold growing inside of it. Threw it away, too. read more

I came here for a great cappuccino but ended up having gelato on their patio (from my trip I learned that if you come across warm - sunny day in Vancouver you HAVE to take advantage in every way possible!). The smell of the cafe and the great effort and care shown by the baristas make this one of the better cafe's I stepped into in Vancouver! They're serious about how they make their coffee even to the level of micro-foam on a cappuccino. Call me a coffee snob, but I appreciate it when a cafe takes this stuff seriously! Funny thing....I paid the guy with a 5 and as soon as he put the change in my hand, I pitched it into the tip jar. OOPS!! I forgot all about the 1 and 2 dollar coins. I accidentally tipped 3 bucks for a 2 buck coffee that I poured myself. I didn't say anything to the guy about it, though. HIGH PRICES, LONG WAITS Milano is located 2 blocks from my apartment and I decided to give them a shot because of the proximity to home. I ordered a decaf americano, and a gluten free apple bar (I'm not one of those gluten free nuts, I just wanted something with apple in it... but I am one of those nuts who drinks decaf...). The $6+ price tag hurt, but I paid it and sat down to wait. No less than 10 minutes later, my coffee was finally ready. And it was pretty good. I imagine they do better at their Gastown location where the clientelle aren't pensioners or young professionals, but rather urban hipsters wasting their parents money. My favourite place in Vancouver to grab a dark roast coffee. It is one of the rarer places on the west coast where I don't get overpowering acidic coffee! The hints are more earthy and caramel-like. Very nice decor, simple,clean, and woody. The high top chairs are surprisingly comfortable than they look! Many kinds of coffee here - pourover, stovetop (rarely offered in other places?) drip, you name it. I ordered a large latte but since it was close to closing time it came in a to-go cup. My latte was scrambled quickly, but came with a chewy foams of milk. Smooth overall, but I prefer a stronger cup. It's good that I went to Milano at night because I wouldn't want to drink a strong cuppa before going to bed. Service was friendly but pretty slow.. It is surprisingly opened till 11pm, which is also rare for a cafe in Vancouver other than the Big Chains! They recently opened, taking the space of what was once Mum's Gelato. I liked the aesthetics of the place, simple and fresh. Since it's my first visit to any Milano Coffee shops, I was wowed once I entered the shop. They have the most beautiful espresso maker I've ever seen, and it makes gorgeous tasting coffees. My friend and I also tried their Apple pastry and it was so good, not too sweet, perfect crust/base. Next time I'm going back to try their gelato. Dropped in here since I know the coffee rep for Milano. The space is cramped and oddly laid out. I found a space at the window bar, but has to shove a messy pile of newspapers out of the way. The coffee bar girl was unfriendly and didn't even say "thanks" after I paid. I find this attitude surprising given the economy and that Milano is a new brand. The brew was OK, a dark roast. A bit like Starbucks, but in a ceramic mug. Will probably not return. read more

As a West End resident I go here often - really, this is the best option out of Starbucks or Delaney's. The coffee is pretty good, although I wish they would start mixing the roasts up a bit as they only ever seem to offer Black Beauty and Bourbon. Don't they have others?? The pastries are ok too, for the limited variety they have. The gelato is good! The staff are always friendly - it's a very casual atmosphere so they don't exactly wait on you hand and foot like Starbucks, whew! When the weather is good it's nice to sit outside and watch the people go by while you're soaking in the sun. When the weather is bad, and the place is busy, it's not so enjoyable as it's quite noisy and the stools are not very comfortable. One of these days my butt is going to go right through the seat! Poor technique and unfriendly service I stopped in Sunday morning for a double shot of espresso and instead received 3oz cup reminiscent of a lungo. The shot lacked your typical hazelnut colour crema, instead, replaced by cream coloured crema which faded with in seconds and tasted similar to bitter drip coffee. Having spent some time in VC the last 18mths with a work contract, I often find VC to have a rather arrogant / rude manner but this spot is the complete opposite! Tiny space, great coffee. While this little outfit doesn't really fit in with their Asian Denman neighbours, it's my go-to cafe in between ramen and izakaya chugging. Trust me, you'll need it to fight the Japanese food itis! In the summer, they set up a few seats outside which are great for gelato eating and people watching. The side street that it neighbours is lined with cherry trees so occasionally in May one could find a pedal or two in their coffee. The espresso-based drinks are solid and live up to the Milano standards. If only it was a bit more spacious, I'd stay here all day. read more
