Came into ask questions about my Grandpa's G-Scale & O-Scale collections. They're 30+ years old with some working and some not-working-correctly transformers. Matt was extremely helpful and shared lots of insight and knowledge with me. They have an amazing collection of G & O scale new and used trains and accessories. The last train store I've been in was Allied Train Shop in Culver City many years ago before they closed down, so getting to visit a big model train store again was amazing! I love this store (and the neighboring train store). I went in thinking I wanted a Kato HO starter set ...but after talking to the employees, asking lots of questions, and looking at/handling various trains, I realized I actually wanted an LGB garden train in G scale. That's quite a BIG difference, and I'm glad I didn't order "blind" from some mega-store on the internet. Every employee I encountered was welcoming and helpful, but gave me space to look and think. I highly recommend you stop by if you have any interest in trains, at all. As soon as I walked in, I made it clear I was just casually browsing, but they still answered my zillion questions, and I returned the following day to buy my train. Great customer service, I purchased a train set for my son years ago and was having a couple of issues with the remote, train track and locomotive train. The guys @ Milepost 38 Toy Trains went above and beyond figuring out my problems since I have had my train set from their store for many years. The guys noticed my remote had an intermittent power issue that they were able to fix at the store, gave me tips how to maintain my train track, lubricated my locomotive and made sure my system was good to go. Further, due to buying it from their toy train/mom and pop store, they did it for no cost and appreciated me coming to their store to help me with my train set. I had acquired a Union Pacific Big Boy #4012 locomotive and tender in August of 2025 at a great deal on E-Bay from another train enthusiast in Virginia. I received it a few days later and was anxiously waiting to put it on my track at home, only to see it run 6 inches and then stop and saw the cab light flash intermittently, and would not run again. I waited a couple months as I was reviewing all the reviews from the local train shops around the Inland Empire and Los Angeles areas and was impressed with a majority of positive reviews from Milepost 38. I called the train store and spoke with their train repair technician Dan who advised me to bring the inoperable Big Boy to the store on certain days of the week when he is scheduled to work. I took a 44 mile drive to Westminster on a weekday and was greeted at the door from another friendly store employee who introduced me to Dan. Without hesitation after meeting him, he took the locomotive and placed it on the track at the store and saw exactly what was happening. He asked how the train was packaged and I advised him that the outer cardboard box that it came in with numerous "FRAGILE' stickers on it had been damaged on the corners. Dan noticed that it had very minimal foam packaging which in his opinion was not adequate protection coming on a delivery truck across the nation. Dan accepted the locomotive and wrote me a work invoice stating it would be a couple of months before I would receive it, maybe longer due to the Christmas season approaching and that the shop was loaded with repair orders. I said that was fine that time was not an issue, that I would rather have it repaired properly without being rushed. I received a message from Dan on December 23rd, a couple days before Christmas saying the Big Boy is up and running and included a picture of it on the track at the shop. Being that I had other commitments due to Christmas being so close that I agreed to pick it up on that following Sunday. Me and my fiancee took a nice Sunday drive to Milepost 38 and was met at the door again with a friendly store employee from Arnie's trains next door and Dan who was running my fully restored Big Boy on the track. Dan showed me how all the functions were operable including all the smoke features. I was filled with joy that I can now surprise my grandsons and show them grandpa's new addition to his railroad. My fiancee was impressed with all the trains, cars, and clothing items that she even bought me a couple of nice train t-shirts for Christmas. Dan's final repair cost was under what I expected to pay, being that the Big Boy is a large locomotive and he apologized for not having repaired it sooner, which I understood being that it was a busy time of the year for the shop. Dan explained in detail about the smoke features of the locomotive and made it clear that the smoke generators have to have oil at all times to prevent damage to them, and drew me a diagram on a copy of my invoice how to fill the reservoirs properly and how many drops are needed for the various smoke reservoirs. The ultimate cause was the shipping company's mishandling of the package containing the Big Boy locomotive. Dan indicated that the motor wiring and associated connections were all offline, including a loose motor, caused by being thrashed in shipping. My interaction with Dan was like talking to an old friend and I feel that I received great value for utilizing his expertise in train repair and got my Big Boy running again. Dan, you are a great asset to Milepost 38, and can't thank you enough for making me and my grandkids happy and look forward to visiting Milepost 38 for new equipment and servicing my other locomotives. My family and I visited Milepost 38 Toy Trains on Sat, Sept 13. The staff there was super friendly, helpful and welcoming. He greeted everyone that walked into the store. He went out of his way to help all of his customers. That was the polar opposite of the two staff that sat near the front by the entrance of Arnie's Trains. Don't ever go to Arnie's Trains. Milepost 38 is a great store with a great selection for your G-Scale train needs. The staff is super helpful. read more

I was surprised to learn that they were owned by the same person because we really didn't get any real help at the store next door. I brought in my 1965 Lionel 2383 diesel locomotive into Mile post 38 and was met at the door by a couple of friendly folks. I said to them that I wanted to get my locomotive repaired so I can run it around the Christmas tree. I was introduced to a man named Daniel who quickly knew what I wanted done. I gave him the locomotive and in a couple of weeks it was repaired and running like new! My Grandmother who gave me the locomotive at Christmas would be so happy! Milepost 38 is clean and spacious! There are several trains that you can watch on their tracks. The display cases have interesting engines and cars. Dan was very knowledgeable and helpful. We were able to buy a Lionel train transformer that had been refurbished in its original box for a reasonable price. Dan also checked out out Lionel train engine from 1949. We are having it turned up. It will take two weeks or so. Dan also told us about a liquid smoke product that will work better than our smoke tablets. It's great to hear about better products for this special train. I would recommend Dan and Milepost 38 to anyone who wants to learn more about model trains! read more

This is in response to Matt's comments regarding our interaction. The 2nd train that I was given was tested on a very short piece of HO scale track that was approximately 3 ft. long. So the test lasted all of 5 seconds before I took the train home. Once I got the 2nd train home it started acting up within 30 minutes and I immediately called the store informing them that I would be returning the train the next day, not several days later as Matt claims. And if Matt had any integrity as a business owner he would have made the offer to deal with the manufacturer for me face to face while I was still in the store, instead of waiting until after I wrote a negative review. I find it especially pathetic that Matt took the time to research how many negative reviews that I've left on Yelp to insinuate that I'm the problem. Apparently I've left 13 negative reviews but I've been on Yelp since 2013, so that's 13 negative reviews in 10 years. I hardly think that's excessive, but nice try. Matt also mentioned that he tried to fix the 1st train that I purchased free of charge, but he obviously didn't fix it. So was I supposed to be grateful that he didn't charge me for not fixing it ? Every first Saturday of the month, 3 year old Drew has a big responsibility. It is his day to babysit Grandpa. Since he is more than a few years short of being eligible for a driver's license, and a few feet short of being able to reach the gas peddle, I decided that this time he might need an additional escort. I can't deny, I was curious too. Usually the two of them go to the Chino Airplane Museum, as Drew is already an honorary mini-docent there and has a jaw dropping passion for WWII planes. But this time was a bit different. Drew announced that he wanted to go to the hobby shop to see some trains. So, after a little research by Grandpa, an adventure to Westminster was tacked on to the museum trip. Milepost 38 is the perfect place for a little guy. A shop filled with a mix of toy and larger train models like I remember seeing circling around our Christmas tree, the first thing you really notice is the operating layout that has several of those large scale trains running on the tracks, complete with puffs of smoke coming out the smoke stacks. Then there is the child's table that is set up for a Thomas Toy Train set (made by Fisher Price), happily inviting little hands to touch, choo choo, and manipulate to their hearts' content. This is a clever way to get parents and grandparents to feel a wave of guilt if they do not buy yet another accessory or vehicle to start or add to a growing set already at home. I know it worked for me. When Drew declared that he "didn't have that one yet', referring to Harold the Helicopter, this Grandma was right on it. And there is an impressive amount of additional accessories for future spoiling. Don't forget to walk next door for the other train shop, Arnies. That one is the "toy store" for the Dads and Grandpas. read more

Tis the season to have a train go around our Christmas tree. No place better than mile38post! I was always a model train enthusiast and have a very large HO scale collection, but it was a bit undersize for going around my Christmas tree. I also didn't want a battery operated train. I wanted a train I can pass on to my son and his son. The staff here at mile38post were very helpful. My very first train kid when I was a kid was a Bachmann large scale but that was over my budget. I ended up picking up my first O gauge train by Lionel. Even though my first train set was defective, the staff did not hesitate replacing my faulty engine with a new one. I was also able to test my new train on their display track just to make sure I left satisfied, and sure was I stoked. Thanks again Matt, John and Randy! My 11-year old son and I came into the store today, excitedly looking to add to his collection of HO scale Thomas trains. They have a large selection of Thomas merchandise and a good variety of other G-scale trains. There were three older men "working". Not once was I acknowledged or greeted. We asked for help and they were not very friendly in their responses. In contrast, the store next door, Arnie's Model Trains, was exceptional. Kevin Honda was VERY accommodating to all of my son's questions, exceptionally friendly and helpful. Their store is very clean, organized and really well-laid our. As I understand it, these two businesses are owned by the same owners. However, there is a very big difference in experience. In my line of business, customer experience is what makes the whole experience. I was very disappointed with their lack of attention to this. read more

Beware if selling your collection. I was looking to sell part of a collection and stumbled on Milepost 38 as it was the closest location. One suggestion for anyone reading this and thinking of selling - check with other stores or buyers in the area. I first gave a list to the person at the desk, but he told me I would need to bring the trains in to get an estimate. I brought part of the collection in and Matt inspected them and went to the back to check "market value". I had already done research prior and when he came back with a quote, his estimated value was a quarter of what the prices were online and he gave me an offer 50% of his value. After telling him what I found online, he mentioned that my trains were not in good condition, lacked features identical models had, and much work would need to be done on his part to clean and restore the trains. I had already tested the trains before bringing them in and they were all in good condition. Further, Matt couldn't have made that determination considering he only visually inspected them. He raised the offer slightly and then proceeded with pressure tactics such as mentioning that selling to him was better than holding onto the trains for nothing and that if I tried to sell on eBay, I would lose 30%+ to fees (untrue). I relented and sold part of the collection. I then proceeded to check Milepost 38's eBay page over the next several days and see the trains I sold to Matt listed at nearly the value I observed through my research. The most dishonest part is the trains were listed at the exact condition I had brought them in (not in the condition Matt had stated they were in) and the description included the features Matt had noted were missing. In terms of the experience as someone interested in getting into the hobby, I came one other time and observed subpar customer service. The associate helping a family that seemed to be completely new did not have the patience to answer all their questions and instead tried to push them into purchasing products. Overall, whether you're looking to get into the hobby or looking to sell a collection, I recommend looking elsewhere in Southern California. There are honest stores that will treat you much better. read more

I haven't even gone in yet and got great customer service. Lol on 6/26/21 I finally had a chance to get up there. I got distracted by parking lot eye candy at Arnie's trains and then I heard a click.. the door locked. It was 5pm and I ASSUMED the would close at 6 like the shop next door. I was dead wrong. The employee ran back to the door and said " if you know exactly what you want, come in real quick". I had to answer honestly and say I wanted to look around and had no idea what I wanted or anything about anything really. Turns out, Arnie's didn't carry the scale I was looking for and it was a wasted trip. But, that employee didn't have to come back and offer. Very cool and I can't wait to get back there after staring through the shop window daydreaming. Already good service! read more

Another long overdue review. I'm a lifelong Lionel train user and collector and Milepost 38 is my go to store. The selection of new and pre owned trains is deep and covers every interest. They have test track so you can test used items for function. The staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and engaging with the customers. Every time I go there I feel like my business is appreciated. I've found many great bargains in the used section and many "orphans" to take home at under $10. If you are into model railroads this is probably the best remaining shop in Southern California. It's worth the drive from anywhere. read more

Matt was extremely helpful with all aspects of model trains for both new and old model & toy train buffs. Definitely the best store in Orange County to buy and sell model trains. Huge selection and a very helpful staff. Matt also buys used trains and vintage train sets offering great prices and offers on used trains. Had a couple customers here when I arrived and Matt was helping them debug an issue with the their train set, he spent a long time working with them to get it right and ensure every link in the connection was tested and good to go. My 3.5 year old son is quite the train fan and when I found out Fullerton Train Days was cancelled this year, I knew that I needed to find an alternate outing to help scratch the train itch he constantly has! I found this place via Yelp and was a bit iffy on how far away from us it was (about a 40 minute drive) but took a chance and boy, did it pay off. We were immediately greeted upon arrival by Mike and given a chance to look around and explanation as to the different scales of model and toy trains. My son was first drawn to the consignment table (like a moth to flame) where there were many trains available to pick up and hold. I was thankful that he wasn't told not to touch but only to be careful because some of the engines were pretty heavy. He loved picking up many of the pieces, inspecting each one and trying to couple them to each other. Mike then offered to run the trains on the track and gave me some explanation as to how everything worked. He even let my son hold the remote and be the "driver"! That sure made his day. Probably his week. Possibly his year. The Thomas section was also fun for him but the real draw was the toy trains. We spent about over an hour there an even came back for a few minutes more after lunch. We were given a lot of freedom around the store and never felt rushed, like we were a burden or pressured to buy anything. Milepost 38 isn't as shiny and fancy as Arnie's next door but I was still very impressed by the volume and variety of trains they offered as well as their exceptional service. He's asked to go back about 50 times and we just went yesterday. So yeah, two BIIIG thumbs up from both of us! read more

I have always loved both toy and model trains since i was young:) I just stumbled upon this great shop there selection is truly incredible they have all the latest models and high end replicas. I fell in love with the 1960s vintage trains but to name just a few they have from Amtrak to Thomas and way more including lots of toys but everything in the store is high quality, and artistically chosen. I was happy to see they have specially train tracks, bridges, and individual parts to maintenance your models, they also have hyperealistic seen props for your growing train masterpiece. Prices here are very competitive!!! very inexpensive!!!. I've heard about this train store for awhile, so I decided to visit it while I was somewhat in the neighborhood. It's actually 2 train stores in one, a large scale toy train store right next to a HO/N Scale store. I visited both. This is a very nice store. And big. Staff is very knowledgeable. What I really liked is their bargain basement sales items on tables they picked up from collections. These have some very reasonable prices on them. It's one of the few stores that has a lot of items priced as low as you could buy stuff at train meets. The only downside for me is they had very little S-gauge items for sale, but that won't bother most people since HO and O are more popular. They also have some nice layouts in different gauges in the store. And, parking is no problem. read more

Several months ago, I took my American Flyer engine to have it repaired. My father bought the train set in the early 1950's and it was not going forward or reverse. It worked fine for several weeks, then the same thing occurred. I needed to engine fixed before Christmas and Randy worked on it while I waited. How happy I was when he emerged from the back of the store, placed it on a test track, and it worked perfectly. I was not charged for the repair and walked out of the store feeling great. The employees at this model train store are all very friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic. I highly recommend Milepost 38 Toy Trains if you are interested in model trains. read more

Milepost 38 is a Lionel (and other O and G scale) train shop right next door to Arnie's Trains. They have a good selection of new and used trains, as well as model buildings etc. The best part about this shop is Matt, the owner. He has been there every time I've stopped by, and is just a great guy. In addition to buying trains from Matt, I've also sold him a fair number of used Lionel locomotives. Had the best time ever here. My grandson did not even want to leave. They were so nice even ran the trains so my grandson could see. I just love trains my self. If you want to get a nice Tran this is the place to go. And they don't try to make you buy the most expensive ones. They will even show you ones in your price range. Did I tell you they even have toy cars and mortar cycles? And some books too. Oh, yah they have a little table for children to put their toy train on and cool toy box too.
