We had NO clue where they were, and it broke our hearts that they had gone unmarked and unvisited for all these years. Some of us painted some rocks and left them by the site, which was easily found thanks to the young lady who went out and left markers for us. We didn't expect the rocks to remain for long, due to the need for grounds maintenance. My mother passed away this past February from cancer, before we were able to get a stone for our relatives. This summer, my aunt, my father, and I were able to have a stone made. Today, it was set in the ground, in all its glory. Imagine our surprise when we went to see it and saw that the little painted rocks we'd left there last summer were still there! What a truly remarkable sight. We would like to thank everyone at Oak Grove in West Haven for helping us on our journey to finally honoring our relatives, and for saving our little painted rocks!

They know we don't have any family here, so their fantastic service was not motivated by the prospect of future business.

Lanes through it are walkable or driveable. There are rows of neat headstones. The grass is well trimmed. But there's one particularly interesting plot: Timothy Clark Smith. Mister Clark designed and rigged his own tomb in an attempt to prevent his nightmare of an undesirable outcome. He installed a set of stairs underneath a large square capstone beside his burial mound, and is said to have been buried with a bell in his hand and a breathing tube. The most noticeable piece is the horizontal window he installed, six feet above and centered on his face. However, he was buried in 1893 and you can only see a few inches into the six-foot-long tomb as the glass has aged and there is quite a lot of moisture. There are no accounts that his burial was anything other than normal. The cemetery is open 24 hours. Mister Clark's grave is noticeable for the mound around it and the square concrete above it. There is a map of the graves when you walk in. There are two plaques on the entrance. The first reads: In honor of the men and women who planted in the wilderness the early homes of Stratford. Who fought bravely and suffered patiently in the war of the American Revolution, and who left to their descendents a proud memory of courage, endurance and faith in God. The second reads: 1676-1906 erected by the Mary Silliman chapter daughters of the American revolution The graveyard itself is very quiet and isolated by the roads and other buildings around it. It is definitely worth a walk through if you appreciate old gravestones.

I was also expecting a high pressure sales environment and was on my guard for anything that seemed self serving (I'm suspicious and skeptical by nature). Our experience was the exact opposite of that expectation. From the basic planning to the extra arrangements we were dealt with more than fairly and even talked out of what I thought would have been easy (and not superfluous) upsale. In this age of large companies we all have become accustomed to giving up on customer service and personal attention to detail. Mullis Funeral home is one of those rare places that still prides itself on the customer's happiness and value. First, he asked us to follow the hearse in our car, then halfway through the ride, he blew a yellow light and kept going. At the cemetery it was rush, rush, rush. The final blow was, as I collected the other half of the funeral home's payment from my sister, the Mullins guy took my place as pallbearer and carried my mom to her grave without me. The other pallbearers protested, but he ignored them. We were in and out of the cemetery in about 20 minutes. This was as cold and uncaring an experience as I've ever had. My sister left in tears over it. And I was robbed of the experience of carrying my mom to her final resting place, all because the Mullins guy was late for lunch or something. My family will hurt for a long time because of it.

We went back to purchase two necklaces and Mike took the necklaces into the back to "fill them" with my father's ashes. With all the grieving, afterwards we realized we didn't bring my fathers ashes with us when we purchased the necklaces. Mike told us they had some of my fathers "leftover" ashes in the back??!!! Which leads me to wonder, whose ashes are really in the necklaces I purchased??!!
