Mill End is the best fabric store in the world! So says my 10-year-old daughter, who wanted to make a winter scarf out of fleece. The staff were very nice to her, and showed her different knotting techniques. The result turned out amazing, and we're definitely going to go there again! This store is almost always a frustrating experience. Their carts don't roll, making shopping difficult. They have decent products, but definitely over priced, do not offer coupons anymore (except they'll give you 20% of a 40-60% Joanns coupon - big of them) on ONE item - but to add insult to injury, after paying FULL PRICE for just four yards of fabric - totaling over $52 - they no longer offer you a bag for your purchase. Not paper, not plastic, not anything. SERIOUSLY? I do not expect to pay full price and get no real customer service, for something that would have cost them 5 cents? I will do my best not to go back. I used to drop $100-200 there all too regularly (a quilter), but this really was the final straw. read more

I like this store a lot! The employees are knowledgeable about fabrics, colors and design and will take the time to help you, and give you input, if you ask for it (as I did while selecting fabrics for a quilt). They are excited to see your finished products, too! They do not have sales like JoAnn's, but I just learned that they will honor competitor's coupons up to 20% for a cut of fabric. They have an amazing selection of fabrics but this place is not inexpensive. The quality is amazing and selection is endless from tapestry to simple muslin or cotton you have everything you could need under one roof...bring your coupons from competitors because they will be accepted. They advertise on the counter and we were told that they exchange 5 feet of fabric and when we went to return ours at the Beaverton location they rudely refused to return it. Not wise to advertise a policy on your counter and then not honor it. read more

For the most part these comments only pertain to the Beaverton store... I want so much to say, "idiots", but that would perhaps only apply to management. I don't blame the worker bees because they may not have been trained properly. And fabric stores need to pay their people better than minimum wage. You will attract and keep happy people. Sewing is not only hip and trendy but its a wonderful life skill that contributes to great self satisfaction and even a healthier planet. That's what you should feel when you walk into a store for makers, not sadness and boredom. One thing that irks me to no end is having to provide a driver's license when using a debit card. I usually go in and out of places with a debit card and my phone. The policy of asking for a DL is just ignorant. The security is provided by your pin. Think about it. Where else to you do this? No where. This comes from not knowing how things work. True, they don't have as much as the big store on McLaughlin but the selection is pretty good. Good luck getting fabric cut properly. That goes back to training. By the time you go home and straighten your cut, you could loose way more than you should. You're always going to loose some but if you know how to lay fabric on a table and line up selvages before a cut is made, you will get better results. Invariably they lay the fabric out twisted and I have to reach over and line things up and tell them how to cut and then they get pissy. I don't care. It's my money. (See Cynthia T's review below) At Mill End, the customer service motto is, "the customer is always wrong" and you will have to fight for and defend any issues you might have with your purchase. It reminds me of the 60's. I get disgusted when they offer unsolicited advice because usually its bad advice. I have been sewing for 48ish years...they give bad advice, bad and unsolicited. I feel sorry for those who actually need advice. Give them the dead stare and a heavy sigh, then google your question on your phone. Know your fabrics because the fabric content is often miss marked. This is expected when you are buying "mill ends". The fabric is too expensive for "mill end" fabrics. I usually can do better online. The Beaverton store is very disappointing -- both from a customer service standpoint as well as fabric selection (or lack thereof). I was shocked to find out that they won't do multiple cuts for the same fabric. In my case, I needed two 3/4 yard cuts from the same fabric. I was told that it's against their policy to do that. When I asked why, I was told that's what the owner wants. I then asked to have a snip made at the 3/4 yard mark -- the response, "I'll give you the entire cut and you can go across the store and measure and cut it smaller yourself." Unbelievable! They are a fabric store -- isn't cutting fabric in standard lengths implied? I will not be shopping at Mill End on Western again. It's too bad too because they have a huge space, lots of parking and nice employees. read more

Very nice people that are willing to help you which makes a huge difference versus other local competitors in the area. They have a ton of selections and the prices are fair. I was able to show them several photos and they were able to pin point exactly the fabric and color without hesitation. read more

For the serious seamstress who knows what she/he wants, and knows how to sew, this is the best place around, except maybe their Milwaukie store because it has even more stuff. This is a real fabric store, not a craft store. No crafty crap here. Salespeople are generally experienced sewers, and generally helpful. The owner searches out some pretty wonderful stuff, both for high-end apparel, interiors, and trims. They also sometimes have some screaming deals. Merchandise moves quickly if it's cool, so go often, really look, and check the sale area. Use your coupons from elsewhere for up to 20% off. They have your basic quilter's cottons, too, for you crafters, and they have notions other craft stores don't have. $ - $$$ read more

This is the best fabric store ever, better than Joanne's fabrics. Their selection is really big, and they have always new kinds of fabric coming in. They also carry many other items, beside fabrics. I love their selection of fake swede and fake leather fabrics, it is amazing, I got some very soft black fabric that really looks and feels like real leather, to make a skirt. It is really beautiful. The best part at this store is the people, they are so nice and helpful, always. If you can't find what you are looking for there is always someone available to help you find it or if they do not have exactly what you look for, then they suggest something very similar. I also like the fact that you never have to wait for ever in long lines like at Joanne's fabric, in order to pay. Once you have picked all you need, you go and pay and it is fast. I'm not an expert in this world, it's a means to an end. I get crazy ideas that mean I have to figure out how to sew something. Twice this has brought me to this store and I'm 1) looking for something unusual and 2) I have no idea what I'm doing. The first time it was sparkly vinyl fabric to reupholster 50s style stools that were $100 cheaper if I chose an ugly canary yellow instead of the color I wanted. While they didn't carry the fancy brand I wanted with a pastel sky-blue color, a staffer helps me find a mondo sparkly silver that doesn't look tacky (really) and some good advice on vinyl (stretch before that staple baby!) for about $25. The second time I went in for upholstery fabric with a mom and sister that both have disabilities. One of the employees saw my situation, jumped in and owned my mom and her need to choose a fabric for great-great grandma's chair like it was an executive decision -- with utmost respect, consideration and an artful realization that you have to help steer mom to a practical conclusion. I cannot stand this store and only go there when I am desperate for something that Joann's does not carry and I do not have time to go to Portland's Fabric Depot or Milwaukie's original Mills End store. Their prices are no longer inexpensive - which used to be the reason they did not offer regular sale prices or coupons. They'll accept other store coupons - with a list of conditions that they use to disqualify your coupons. The store itself is old and dirty - I always feel like I should wash my fabrics from there before I use them... The sales people are pleasant enough but seriously, EVERY time I go there I regret not making the time to go to Portland! read more

I had not come to this store for some time, I came here few days ago to get some special needles for my mom, and some different kinds of fabrics for our home, but I was a little disappointed, ...so much has changed in this store...and not for the better..this was  always my favorite fabric store, mostly cause the staff used to be so friendly and very helpful. But this time, first it was really hard to find someone at all, who could help me with a question I had and in finding what I was looking for....I had to walk around and around for some time before I could find someone to assist me, then they were not very helpful, they didn't provide me with the info I needed, and they seemed annoyed that I asked them and very stressed, it seems their customer service quality is not as good as it was before, plus I did not find what I was looking for, many items have disappeared. The only positive thing here is their price, is still reasonable and parking is really easy. read more

Best selection of luxury fabrics on West side. Prices are fair. They will take a Joann's coupon but only for 20% off. However, customer service gets a fail. If you aren't dressed to the nines and look like you have a lot of money you are not welcomed and wander around until they suspect you of shop lifting and then they ask if they can help you if you haven't explicitly approached a sales associate and ask for help. Not all sales associates are this way, however some are. Especially the luxury & bridal section. Not as bad as it used to be several years ago. I only go there when I need something I know they have and cannot get at Joann's which is not very often. Snooooty would be a good assessment of SOME of their sales associates. They aren't very social and act as if it is a chore to help you. Steer you to cheaper stuff thinking you can't afford the good stuff. Don' bother here if you want customer service. Apparently, all sales final, No where is it posted that all sales are final. I had to hunt down salesperson to get merchandise. Not readily available. I purchased merchandise with cash. Found that when exposed to sunlight, the item purchased was the wrong color. There are no windows in the place to check items before purchase for exact match. The item was not altered in any way, and can be verified easily. Yet, no money back, no option of store credit. Nothing!!!!!!!!!!!! I will definitely not shop here again. read more

Despite how large this shop is, the selection never impresses me. I have tried shopping here several times, and never feel particularly inspired. They do have a lot of holiday prints, some tacky but some nice. This is not just a quilt shop, so even though there are a ton of fabrics, they fall into every category of fabric, so for any given project you are working on, the selection is somewhat limited. I was desperate for a jelly roll one day, when wanting to try tube quilting, and I found literally one jelly roll in the whole place. It happened to be beautiful, not what I was hoping for, but something I could make myself like. It was on the higher end of prices for a jelly roll- around $35. The service was alright. They didn't seem enthusiastic, but weren't rude. Overall, I'd pass this place up in favor of Joann, even though I like supporting smaller businesses. read more

The BEAVERTON store should win an award (if they haven't already) for the MOST UNFRIENDLY, RUDE, UNHAPPY , STAFF in PORTLAND. The store has a very uncomfortable atmosphere. Only ONE staff member has ever been helpful & interested in helping me, she just moved from New York and is wonderful. I cant imagine her staying long, sad to say. The location is SO close to my home I (hate to admit) I still shop there for zippers or other notions .. as little as possible. There have been times I want or need something but would rather go without, because honestly , I just cant bring myself to go in there. Very strange. The fabric selection isnt that great. read more
