So here's the deal with this place. There are 3 types of accommodations: 1) The main building facing the street, 2) little cottages set among some redwood trees behind the main building, and 3) a large renovated house with separate living quarters (also behind the main building). I never fully understood the set-up until I saw it in person, so I hopefully this helps you envision the options. 1) The main building. I never saw the rooms in the main building, but the second level (which is where the rooms begin) is literally above the parking garage (which is on the main / street level). Many people have complained about the noise and I can see why. Their front doors literally open up to the inside of the parking garage; it's like you're on a parking garage balcony. I will post a photo below so you can see what I'm talking about. We did not select those rooms due to the noise issue (which is well documented by other Yelpers). 2) The cottages / cabins. I think there are only two of these. They are cute stand-alone structures located about 30 feet (?) from the main building & parking garage. They looked kind of small (maybe fitting 1 queen or king bed?). 3) The big restored house. This is where we stayed - ground level, #21 ("Creek Lane"). Super nice room. Spacious. Huge bathroom. Nice bath salts & lotion. Lovely. However, we were disappointed with the noise level. To be fair, we might be noise freaks - we hate being woken up from other people's noise when we're on vacation. It's our Thing. Given that this is a high priority for us, I even called before we booked the room and asked them about noise levels (due to what I was reading on Yelp). They assured me that the town and property are very quiet. And we indeed could not hear a peep from the outside. BUT we could hear the people upstairs stomping around in the early morning and late evening. And the water pipes for the rooms upstairs went right behind our headboard, which was unusually loud. I don't think the people upstairs were actually being loud, but you can just hear amplified footsteps as they walk around the room. So we were kept up late and woken early on our vacation. :-/ Had we known this, we would not have booked this location (given that noise level is a top concern for us). Also, the front porch is cute and would be a nice place to sit and drink your coffee or tea - but just be aware that the house faces a little parking lot and the backside of a bar, so it's not exactly a tranquil view. But you don't have to go far to enjoy nature around there, so it wasn't a concern for us. Overall, the service was good and the room was lovely (albeit loud at times). Can't beat the location in the heart of Mill Valley, within close walking distance of everything. read more

My partner booked this hotel for my birthday under the impression that it was in a rural area because of the photos online, but it's actually in the middle of a city with a few redwoods near the cottage. We stayed in the cottage #2 with a fire place, but over all the room was smaller than expected and the price was too high for the size and accommodations. The surrounding restaurants were higher class but the hotel was, in our opinion, not up to par. The complimentary wine and cheese was canceled due to Covid as well as room cleaning... there was complimentary breakfast but the staff banged on the door loudly and aggressively. There was a bottle of wine and two sweets in a goody bag upon arrival, which we were both appreciative of. The remote for the heater was dead so we were roasted the first night at nearly 80 degrees, so we had to open the windows and let cool air in. Also, MAKE SURE YOU CLOSE THE DOORS ON THE FIREPLACE. We weren't aware of that and the smoke alarm went off in the middle of the night even though they were duraflame logs. Parking lot is small but the parking spaces are even smaller... too small even for a Honda Civic next to a mid sized SUV. For the good things: the fire place is nice (when you know how to keep the smoke out), the bed was comfortable, the room was dark well into the morning, and there are a few trees and a creek outside the cottage. The town is just a small parking lot away but it is relatively quiet to other hotels. read more

Checking In was a bit stiff, we weren't invited to sit down while the woman was processing our information. But at least it was efficient (?). She informed us about the wine and cheese in the evening, breakfast, and use of the elevator that runs through the middle of the garage. We took the luggage cart to our car and loaded everything ourselves. I'm not sure if we were offered any help up but we had everything handled anyway. The main rooms are cozy together but not overwhelmingly claustrophobic feeling. Once we got to our room I was in love. The Room was well equipped with iron, ironing board, ample hangers, blowdryer, towels, robes, amenities that were uncommon (e.g. makeup remover was nice!), great brand on the amenities as well (La Fresh, EO). Bed was comfortable, furniture was cute and rustic, and the balcony looked out into the redwoods. Very quiet. We arrived in the summer so there was no use of the fireplace but it was still nice to have around for decor at minimum. Breakfast was delicious. Hot oatmeal, make-your-own waffles, cereals, fruits, pastries, juices, espresso at your request (otherwise drip coffee was available). It is located at a very nice indoor terrace that is greeted by the morning sun. Will absolutely stay here again if I find myself in Marin. read more

I am so thankful to have stumbled upon this GEM in the woods and though I am sad for the last minute cancellation because they missed out on an amazing stay here! But lucky for my family we lucked out with a room with double beds! My kids and husband and I stayed here for the night, last minute! Not only did we get a great deal on the price, they even allowed our family pet Charlie to join us! For a fee of course but I was happy to pay it! Stella or Stelli I didn't quite catch her name but she was beyond accommodating and sooo helpful and sweet. We had to park on the street which was more than fine and they paid for the meter till check out! The rooms were amazing! Tub in the bathroom with glass stand in shower right next to it! ----- that was my favorite part, the tub! Beds were so comfy!!! The décor is rustic and modern, absolutely breathtaking views and trees, the sounds of nature!! Very Clean room and wonderful toiletries in the restroom.... the only complaint would be the toilet paper, the quality is not the best, its probably truck stop quality....(I'm finicky about toilet paper!) We had French doors that opened up into town! Gorgeous! The Continental Breakfast was AMAZING! The kids loved that they had donuts and 3 cereals to choose from! They even had LOX to go on bagels, oatmeal; fresh fruit, coffee 4 juices! And so much more! We didn't make it in time to have wine and apps from 530 to 6 I believe...which that I think is awesome! We stayed at the Mill Valley inn for one night over a Sunday. My room was a Deluxe King with a large soaking tub. We wanted to get out of the city for a night. This was upstairs in the Creek House which was over a wooden bridge and yes-a creek. Room was nicely appointed. Patio outside for lounging. Quiet area except for the construction next door. 7:30 wake up to a jack hammer! Evening Wine and cheese, great breakfast in the AM. Ample Parking, Front desk was great. Great location in Downtown Mill Valley. Had Dinner at the Balboa Cafe around the corner. This is now my favorite hotel ever. We stayed here on our wedding night, booked a cottage, and had such a great experience with the hotel from the get-go. Here are the highlights: -Loved that they surprised us with a free chocolate cake dessert from the bakery down the street and half-bottle of Alexander Valley Estate Syrah - They allowed for an earlier check-in time, three hours before their standard (though we couldn't make it anyway since we're running low on time) -They volunteered to feed the meter as long as our truck is parked outside -The beds were so comfy -Loved the bathroom filled with Aveda products -Loved the huge bathroom -Loved that there was a fireplace -Loved the vibe, ambiance, and location of the cottage -Loved that the pathway to get in is in an area of redwoods There was nothing bad about this place at all. My wife and I just returned from a 5 night stay at the Mill Valley Inn. From our initial booking to checking out, we had a very pleasurable experience. My wife spent some time when she first called to inquire about this place asking about the various rooms and the views they afforded. My wife talked to Molly who was Gandhi-esque patient in attempting to answer the myriad of questions my wife had. Knowing our concerns and desires, she recommended room 22 in the Creek Side building and having now stayed there, it was a spot on recommendation. It was one of the best rooms in the entire inn. Rooms 23, 24 and 25 (a much larger room taking up the entire 3rd floor) would also be good rooms as they are located in the same peaceful area. Our room was way in the back in the separate Creek Side building surrounded by dense trees and foliage. We loved the woodsy ambiance of the place. It felt like being up in the mountain in a cabin. We had a wonderful porch just outside our room that we really enjoyed sitting on to enjoy the outdoors and take in the wonderful, woodsy view. There was a small stream that flowed right past our room as well which was nice. This building and this particular room was very serene. Several nights we ate takeout out on the porch and it turned out to be one of our favorite parts of the trip. It was a very pleasurable way to unwind after all the day's activities. Our room itself was clean and updated and included a small refrigerator and a coffee maker. The bathroom was spacious and included both a standalone deep tub and a shower stall. One of the best parts about our room was the very comfortable Duxiana bed. This bed was very comfortable. This inn is located in downtown Mill Valley and is walking distance from the entire downtown area with its countless restaurants, art galleries and an eclectic assortment of other quaint shops. This is an amazing town to walk around in whether it's just in the downtown shop area or further into the residential part of the neighborhood. Mill Valley is a fascinating area with some of the most interesting and varied architecture we have ever seen. No two houses are the same and every one of them is interesting. If you are a hiker you can hike all the way to the ocean through the beautiful Muir Woods in about 4 1/2 hours; one of the nicest, most varied hikes we've ever done. If that's too ambitious, you can cut it down to much shorter hikes. You can do this hike, and many others without driving anywhere as they are nearby and only steps from the inn. My wife and I always chose a place that has an extensive continental breakfast as it's a convenient and economical way to start your day. The breakfast here was excellent, one of the better ones we've had. Another thing that's always been important to us is convenient self parking. We've stayed in Sausalito and other places where there is no self parking at all. You are forced to valet park every time with the added expense and worried of theft and your car isn't even parked in the same area as your hotel. In Sausalito, they were parking our car blocks away. This place has abundant self parking only steps from your room. It's a very convenient amenity. In closing, we have to mention the amazing customer service and personal flourishes that made us feel pampered and special. We had mentioned that we were going to be there celebrating our anniversary. When we arrived there was a bottle of chilled Champagne and a to die for two person sized chocolate cake waiting for us. As we checked in on Mother's Day, there was also a nice Mother's day note. Nice touches that we really appreciated. We'd like to make special mention of Kelly, Stella & Evelio who, to us, personified what truly amazing customer service is (and should be). There was nothing they wouldn't do to make our visit memorable and special and they bent over backwards to address our every need. They were wonderful and the Mill Valley Inn is lucky to have them representing their inn. We will definitely be back. read more

There are 25 guest rooms to choose from. We stayed in room fifteen, one of their sixteen guestrooms located in the Main Building. This is a charming three story Inn right in down town Mill Valley. It is only steps away from some of the best restaurants, right across the street from a theater, and art gallery. You will feel welcomed as soon as you step inside your room. They have classical or romantic music playing for you as you walk in. There is a bottle of wine and some Napa Valley chocolate. The French doors going out to the balcony has a beautiful view. There is a fire place in the room for you to stay warm. On the second floor from 5 pm they offer complimentary local wine which you can enjoy at the lounge or take with you to your room. There are lots of romantic dining options only steps away from the Inn but we thought it would be more romantic to have dinner and watch a movie next to the fireplace in our room. We called in and ordered from Pizza D'Angelo which is just around the corner and they deliver right to the door. Don't let the name fool you because they don't only serve pizza. We ordered fritto misto, tortelloni della casa, and cesare. The complimentary buffet breakfast was such a treat because everything they offered was fresh and absolutely amazing read more

Yes!! As far as places to stay in Mill Valley, this places is as "good as it gets." I stayed here for three days during my honeymoon and my wife and I had a blast! It is run by a very professional and kind staff. I made it a note on the reservation weeks ago that we were staying for our honeymoon, so the manager upgraded us to a balcony room that overlooks the town as well as the mountains surrounding it. It was beautiful! The room we stay in had a rustic feel with a touch of modern here and there. I recommend checking out their website for pictures - they are very accurate. Our stay was absolutely amazing! The room was quiet, the location of the Inn was in the heart of Downtown Mill Valley, so we could walk anywhere we wanted, and the locale is just splendid. Oh yes, and the breakfast was nothing short of exquisite! I have never seen a complimentary breakfast that included a buffet style set up of bagels, salmon, deviled eggs, oatmeal, DIY Waffles, Peet's coffee, apple/cranberry/orange juice, cereal, toast, pastries, and a few other items. We are talking about a giant selection of amazing foods - all you can eat! Every night they have a free wine and cheese tasting as well, which includes a handful of tasty red and white wines. The cheese was delicious too - again, all complimentary. I cannot express how fun and pleasant our experience was. On top of that, the Inn is located about 15 minutes from Muir Woods Park and an extra 25 minutes from a couple beaches. The location, as I said earlier, is just outstanding and the service and "perks" are top notch. We would go back to Mill Valley just to stay at this Inn. Also, fun side note, we got a really good deal to stay at this Inn through Jetsetter.com. We had such a fantastic stay at Mill Valley Inn. We were supposed to be staying in Napa for our elopement but our hotel burned in the Glass Fire the day before the wedding and we needed to find an alternate stay on very short notice! MVI could not have been more lovely and accommodating to us. Truly saved the day. It was a really stressful, hectic time and I'm so glad we ended up there! We had a room in the Oak Creek Lodge, and ended up having our ceremony on the penthouse deck above in the same building. The rooms are quirky and comfortable, with huge soaking tubs and I think most or all of them have decks/patios. I loved the hotel, loved the town, but the service was what really did it for us. To me, the best thing about this hotel is the location - it's in the heart of 'downtown' Mill Valley and within walking distance of shopping and plenty of decent restaurants. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad hotel or anything, but I was somewhat disappointed when we arrived earlier this month and checked in. I had booked a 'balcony king with fireplace'. The room was nicely furnished, clean, and generally well-kept, but for almost $250 a night I was expecting something a bit nicer. There are rooms in, what I guess you would call, the main building, and there are rooms and cottages behind the main part of the hotel (creekside). The main part of the hotel does look like 'a spruced-up motel', as per Diane B (maybe this is something only Dianes in Texas think!) and is attached to the parking garage. The 2 main things I didn't like about the rooms were the bed (too soft mattress) and the noise that reverberates into the rooms when people walk/stomp up and down the stairs. Fortunately this stopped early enough in the evening so we could get some sleep. I also wouldn't have minded softer towels (they were very clean and bleached AND scratchy). The hotel provides wine and cheese in the evenings and a continental breakfast in the morning. The wine and cheese event was OK, but we had our own wine so we only ate the cheese and crackers. As far as the continental breakfast, if you like continental breakfasts, it's pretty good. I don't like a continental breakfast, but I can't ding them for that since I knew that's what was provided (if you want eggs and such, try the restaurant 'Toast' that's about a 5 minute walk away). For the breakfast they provided: cereals, bagels, bread for toast, yogurt, hard-boiled eggs, a make-your-own waffle station, plenty of fruit (sliced and whole), a few kinds of juice, coffee, and a nice selection of teas (there might have been something else). Like I said, this is a perfectly nice selection for breakfast IF you like that sort of stuff (maybe it's too healthy for my taste!). And before I forget, the staff are very professional and friendly. There were absolutely no negative issues with service. Most likely we'll stay here again the next time we visit relatives in the area (as I said, the location is great), but I think I'll look into one of the creekside rooms so we don't have to deal with noise from the stompers going up and down the stairs. read more

Wife and I stayed here for our first anniversary trip in Mill Valley. I just wrote a 239842398 page long review on Bungalow 44, so I'm going to keep this one short. Pros: --LOCATION--we literally walked everywhere. SO perfect. --Nice, professional, friendly staff --Amazing rooms--not at all generic/sterile --Great view of creek/relaxing scenery --Large tub+bath salt=most relaxing evening ever --iPhone/iPod music dock in room=musical happiness Cons: --No fridge!! We definitely needed this one to save the cheese we bought --Patio was great, but neglected--spider webs all over --General outside appearance=wet. Looks like they have a lot of water-issues (poor drainage, etc), and a few parts of the hotel looked in disrepair --Bed comfort didn't correlate with the price we paid for the room--too soft! Overall, an awesome place to stay if you're in the area. It's centrally located to everything and really is nicer than many of the "boutique hotels" I've stayed at. read more

Stayed here during our anniversary and it was great. We got a king room. The room was charming with a door that opened up to the stairwell / balcony. Not super functional but just adds that bit of charm to it. We got some wine for the free wine tasting happy hour when we arrived. The bathroom had a huge bathtub and a separate standing shower. That was BIG plus for anniversary night if ya naw'm sayin! The hotel is located at the base of Mt. Tam, nestled in midst of some redwood trees. I would not normally use a hotel bathtub but I was comfortable using this one, it was great and so deep, plenty of hot water! Last winter , when the big storm knocked out all the power in my neighborhood in MV for 3 1/2 days, I ended up checking in to the Mill Valley Inn. It was a very pleasant surprise. The lady at the desk was very helpful and confessed that the electricity had just come back on in the hotel and she hoped it would stay on. The room was spacious and had a fireplace,...just what the doctor ordered! A nice bathroom with all the products you could ever need. And just across the street from the 142 Throckmorton Theater, a great place for music and comedy. Recomended. read more

The Mill Valley Inn is a really great place to stay within walking distance of many cute shops and restaurants. I was surprised how affordable it was. It was nice and quiet with not only a continental breakfast- but also an evening wine and cheese spread. I really love cheese so I was won me over big time. We really enjoyed our stay at the Mill Valley Inn - the room was beautiful and spacious. The only complaints that I had were that we had to climb up to the second floor with our luggage (no elevator available). Also, there appeared to be some water damage at the threshold going into the bathroom so every time you stepped on that spot the floor would dip. My husband was craving mexican food and there really weren't any mexican restaurants listed on the list of restaurants that the hotel provided so we looked on yelp and found The Cantina. It's not really walking distance from the hotel but you could if you really wanted to - we drove our rental car. The food was REALLY GOOD - Tex Mex, but good. The place was PACKED so obviously it was a local favorite. Good food and good service. Anyway, we would definitely stay at the Mill Valley Inn again. read more

Our stay at Mill Valley Inn was so great that it inspired me to register with Yelp and leave a review. Our room was in the Creek House portion (a lovely Victorian-style building), and it was adorable - yet remodeled beautifully inside. Aveda products, generous amount of towels, huge tub, huge separate shower, and the bed? SO comfortable. In the morning, they have a wonderful (included in the stay) breakfast layout, with steel-cut oatmeal, waffles, fruits, everything. This is also a cyclist-friendly inn. When I told the lady on the phone (forgive me for not remembering her name - she was so very friendly) that we were coming to cycle Mt. Tam, she was genuinely excited and said the room had plenty of space for us to keep our bikes inside. She clearly understands how much we cyclists cherish our rigs! If you happen to find yourself itching to ride a bike but didn't bring your own, well - they have high-quality Trek mountain bikes (AND helmets) for guest use! It's located in the heart of downtown Mill Valley, which is just picture-perfect. If you like Italian food, check out Vasco - only about 2 blocks from the Inn. We will definitely be back! read more

What an amazing experience! My husband and I came here on our 'babymoon' . From checking to check out what an attentive staff! We had a bottle of champagne and beautiful flowers awaiting us in our room. The gentleman at the desk made great recommendations and reservations for us for dinner each night. They helped my husband plan a beautiful picnic for us on the beach. I mean they even loaned him a picnic basket with all the utensils and plates as well as a blanket. It was amazing. They made reservations for a couples massage at a near by spa which was divine. Anything they didn't offer on property at the Inn, they were ready and willing to provide and make recommendations for which was awesome. The room was really nice and complete with great toiletries and lush robes. The beautiful red wood trees through the property on the way to the guest rooms and main house were a nice touch. The common areas were nice and the wine and cheese was also a nice touch. I can't wait to go back! This is why I love boutique hotels. I've stayed at the Mill Valley Inn twice now, once for business and, most recently, to celebrate my anniversary. Both times the service and overall experience have been superb. I'll concentrate on the most recent stay. We arrived in town a little early and it was pouring rain. We called and requested an early check-in and the woman who was working the front desk (whose name is unfortunately escaping me) could not have been nicer or more accommodating. She didn't have our room ready quite yet, but she called a couple of times on our cell phones to update us on the status and then finally to tell us to come on over. The room was cozy, well-decorated, and romantic, with a huge soaking tub and a wood-burning stove. French doors led out to the balcony with a beautiful view of the village. The hotel even placed a nice little split of wine in our room and a note thanking us for choosing to celebrate our anniversary with them. All this for less than $200 a night. We met the most interesting couple during the inn's complimentary wine reception, which they do nightly. It's always so much fun to talk to strangers when we travel! These people were best-selling self-help authors, and very cool. That's the kind of clientelle you'll find here. The hotel is walking-distance to everything in the village. It was raining, but the front desk had plenty of umbrellas to loan out. After we checked out the next day, they even allowed us to keep our car parked in their lot for a couple of hours while we went out for lunch. Truly wonderful service. We had mixed feelings about our visit a couple years ago. Everything was perfect, up until we tried to get some sleep. The staff in the office were friendly and welcoming, offered a glass of wine, and chatted about the area. The room had a decent view, we loved the walkway in the back, and the breakfast was nice. The problem was the amplified noise from the parking area under the rooms. People coming and going late into the night, shouting and stomping up the stairs. Almost tripped over an empty case of bud light in the hall in the morning. When we paid the bill, the guy was real sassy and condescending when we asked how the invoice was broken down. Overall it was a mixed bag that seemed better on paper. read more

Very cool / interesting small but clean and crisp upscale low-rise bed and breakfast hotel in downtown Mill Valley, a door or two down from the legendary Sweetwater. The develoepr designed it himself and it's quite sweet architecturally. Fireplaces and a great communal breakfast room, some cabins out back by the creek, but no hot tub. Easy wealk to everything. Perfect for an unplanned romantic overnighter if your house is too messy to bear. read more

I love Mill Valley Inn! My husband and I stayed here the weekend we got engaged, and then again for our wedding weekend. We've stayed in one of the cottage rooms, and in the Creek House. It's such a charming hotel, and great location, within walking distance of downtown Mill Valley and Old Mill Park. They provided great service to us and our guests during our wedding weekend, helping set out our lunch for the wedding party, and surprising us with champagne and cake in our room the night of our wedding. we stayed here for a night over the weekend. the rooms are not particularly luxurious, but they are comfy. we had a cottage which was not in the main bldg but in the back in the redwoods, so it was really nice and secluded. upon walking in however, there was definitely a musty smell, so i kept the windows open. they do a nice wine reception every night at 5, and the breakfast here is lovely. it's continental, so no hot food, but you can make your own waffles, and there's plenty of fresh fruit, lox, bagels, etc. it's right in the middle of town, so you can walk everywhere easily, including to the dipsea steps. read more

The location in downtown Mill Valley can't be beat, if you want to be able to step out your door and walk to the restaurants and other attractions in downtown Mill Valley. There are some nice redwood trees in back of the inn. As noted in the other reviews, there is an excellent breakfast (waffles, oatmeal, cereal, fruit, bagels, pastries, juice, specialty coffee drinks) in an attractive common room with a view of said trees, and also wine and cheese in the evening. So, not a bad place, but not charming, and left us a little cold considering how much it cost (our room was $255/night). A-mazing hotel walking distance from the heart of Mill Valley. What a great little place! I stayed here for one night with my Dad this past Monday, and we had a great suite. I had the pullout couch bed which was very comfortable. There was a sliding door that separated the bedroom from the living room. Temperature was great, room was nice and quiet, huge balcony with beautiful views of the forest and hillside. I would love to come back here and spend some more time. read more
