    Half of an MD Italian
    Ian M.

Millburn Deli has a prime location in Westfield's downtown, just a short walk from multiple parking lots and plenty of other stores. So it should come as no surprise that the prices are elevated, to the tune of about $15 for a small 6-8" sub. I have to say I did not enjoy anything about my sub, the MD Italian. It was hard to taste the dressing because there was an overabundance of lettuce layered on the bottom. There weren't a variety of meats on the sub, so it lacked much of a flavor profile. The rest of the toppings were thick cut, with large pieces of onion and tomato instead of the thinner slicing most subs feature. The turkey sub I sampled had the same issues. I will say this location maintains the specialty subs that make Millburn Deli a legend, and the folks at the location were very friendly. The food came out quickly and even though the flavor wasn't for me, it was all fresh. So while I don't think I'll be back, I won't fault anyone for giving it a whirl!

Don't bother. Mediocre sandwich. Careless, unfriendly team. And only a 30 minute wait in the store for a weak sandwich!

Annette and Francesco feel that schiacchiata is a perfect example of foods that connects Italian foods and it's culture. Schiacchiata means smashed or flat and is a very old peasant bread from before the Middle Ages. Soft on the inside crisp outside with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt sprinkled on top with no set recipe each baker has their own. They have a lot of interesting sandwiches to choose from. They caught my eye because they use focaccia for some of them which I love any opportunity to have it . I ordered a tuna on focaccia with mixed greens and peppers on the side . Tuna was slightly disappointing. It was missing a little twang/bite I might recommend a jalapeño relish which I use at home when I make it. I also ordered the ranchers roast beef and cheddar cheese, which also needed a little pick up me up also Maybe a twangy horseradish mayo. I also ordered the red white Italian, which is on focaccia bread, which was a very hearty sandwich loaded with chicken breast and roasted peppers. The sandwich needs to be eaten fairly quickly as the focaccia gets slightly soggy. we also ordered the buffalo chicken wrap, which unfortunately didn't have much buffalo taste according to my husband. Minus these few flavor factors for me. The sandwiches in general were very good prices were slightly high, but the serving size was adequate for the pricing. Staff was super friendly. And I love how they have their routine getting all the orders out. They have a good amount of seating inside if you want to eat there. They also have a large variety of chips and drinks also . Definitely worth giving them a try !

Recently I made it a point to visit to pick up a sandwich for lunch and I'm really glad I did! Al's is very clean and welcoming. When you walk in the cashier counter is to the left, set at a right angle to that is the deli counter where sandwiches are assembled. The menu is mounted on the wall towards the back. To the right is a seating area. Across from the cashier is a fridge with various pasta dishes ready to heat up and eat along with some baked goods and lots of different kinds of chips to go with your sammich. I wound up ordering the Red & White Russian which includes Roast Beef, Turkey, Swiss, Horseradish, Deli Mustard, Lettuce, Tomato & Onion. You can have it pressed by request but I did not do so. I also ordered a side order of macaroni salad. The Red & White Russian was really good! The size was perfect and the bread was soft and chewy. There was a good amount of meat and cheese and I really liked the mustard and horseradish flavors. The macaroni salad was great. I would definitely get both of these again! I'm glad I made it a point to stop at Al's and I plan to do so again in the future!

We had the Traditional Sloppy & the Turkey Sloppy. Both were very good. Could have been "sloppier" for my taste, as in not enough Russian Dressing or Coleslaw. I now understand why my Wife wanted extra Russian on her sandwich. She said it still wasn't enough, lol. My Wife enjoyed the coleslaw so much she wanted a side of it. That set the tone a bit, and the staff stayed pretty flat and distant throughout. In a place serving Italian sandwiches, you'd hope for at least a little of that classic deli energy, but it felt more transactional than welcoming. On the plus side, the sandwiches were loaded with meat--generous piles of gabagool (capicola) and the other cold cuts, so you definitely get your money's worth in terms of quantity. That's the highlight. Flavor-wise, though, they fell short. Everything tasted kind of one-note and under-seasoned. The meat was good quality, but it needed salt, maybe some oregano, a splash of vinegar or oil, or just more care in the assembly to bring it to life. It wasn't bad, just forgettable--more filling than satisfying. Overall, it's a solid 3-star spot if you're purely after a big, meat-heavy sandwich and don't mind basic service. If you want personality behind the counter or a sub that actually pops with flavor, you might want to keep looking. We left somewhat satisfied but not impressed, and probably won't make a special trip back.
