I haven't been to Millie's for years but finally thought to make a reservation for brunch with the family to celebrate my daughters birthday. We were greeted pleasantly and seated fairly quickly. The restaurant is small and cozy and has a young hipster vibe about it. We ordered coffees and waters as well as our food soon after we were seated. The food came out so quickly we wondered if they just have a bunch of stuff prepared and they just go grab it like a fast food restaurant. We had breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros. The potatoes were the best part! The food was good but the service was horrible! Our waiter never brought us creamer for our coffee even though we asked twice. He never refilled coffee or waters and never even checked in once our food was delivered. He finally refilled my coffee when we were finished eating and ready to leave. Millie's was just what the doctor ordered after a night out in Richmond. I was in Richmond, VA for a bachelor party and this was a place that had been recommended to us for breakfast/brunch. I would consider this place a greasy spoon, which is exactly what I needed that morning. We came in with a group of 6 on Friday morning and only had to wait for about 15 mins. This place is small and popular, so I expected a little bit of a wait. Our food came out quickly and the service was friendly. I got the perfect diner burger and added bacon and avocado. The home fries that came with the burger were delicious. I think that they were cooked in bacon grease. Millie's is very quirky. It has random artwork on the wall and just has kind of a hipster vibe. It's located in downtown Richmond, so of course parking is street parking, but we lucked out and got VIP street parking right in front of the restaurant. I was liking it already! This place is BUSY and pretty small. The servers, owner, and cooks are constantly on the move and there always seems to be a handful of people waiting both inside and outside of the restaurant (come after 1:30PM if you don't want too much of a wait). We were greeted by the nice owner with the cutest british accent, and waited about 25 minutes for a seat that ended up being at the bar. we were completely fine with that though because we were starving. We ended up sitting next to one of the regulars and chatted up a storm. He recommended the devil's mess and soft scrambled eggs with lobster (which I'll try next time). Now for the most important part, THE FOOD. Oh the food. The food is delicious. Brunch comes with complimentary toast and butter with a plethora of delicious marmalades (orange, blackberry, strawberry). My sister and I ordered the Devil's Mess and the Cajun Mess, both of which were served with a side of home fries. (Each $12) DEVIL'S MESS: YUM. so delicious, it's described as: an "Open-faced omelet of spicy sausage, onions, green peppers, garlic, tomatoes and mild curry, finished with melted white cheddar and avocado" The eggs were fluffy and the cheese was melty, just the way I like my omelette. CAJUN MESS: EVEN BETTER than the Devil's mess! I really enjoyed this dish and was jealous that my sister had ordered the better dish this time. It's described as: "3 eggs scrambled with spicy Andouille sausage, crawfish meat, tomatoes, onions, peppers, corn & cheddar" The crawfish meat was juicy and succulent, and the omelette excellent and flavorful. The home fries are top notch, and are served with delicious sauteed onions. They also seemed to be sprinkled with what tasted like old bay seasoning. This place was very crowded on a Sunday afternoon (brunch time). We waited about an hour to get seated. The establishment has a cramped feeling from the actual dining tables to the downstairs restroom (which I was not a huge fan of). I got the scrambled eggs with lobster which I really enjoyed. The portions here are quite large - I think two people can easily share one plate. The eggs had great flavor (and bacon), the potatoes were as perfect as breakfast potatoes can get, the lobster was meaty. The puff pasty was not super flavorful or crispy, but the hollandaise sauce on it was good. My only other complaint is the couple of tiny pieces of lobster shell I found in the food, but that wasn't a huge deal. I can definitely understand why this place is so crowded/popular! Our server was also friendly. The person at the front, not so much. There are a lot of other delicious sounding things on the menu that I would be down to come back for. Parking is for shit and the prices are through the roof. But we all endure it. Everybody puts up with this $#!+ because the food is GOOD. It's really hard to find GOOD food in Richmond. There are way too many soft reviews on Yelp. But let's do the math, 300+ reviews and it still maintains a 4 star rating? That speaks volumes. Let's just say I was bit underwhelmed and didn't live up to the expectations I had. I came here with a friend on a Sunday morning around 10.30AM and there was no wait (but we did sit at the bar). They specialize in brunch items here and it was bit hard to choose what to get. I finally decided on the scrambled eggs with lobster and my friend got the devil's mess. This must be the smallest kitchen in the entire world. It could barely fit two people adequately but it somehow worked like a well oiled machine. My Eggs and lobster were good but I think I may have enjoyed my croissant and hollandaise sauce more. For $14 maybe I shouldn't have expected too much lobster but there was very few pieces. I liked my dish, but I didn't love it. My friend stated he enjoyed his as well. There is only street parking so parking may take a while. I was honestly not very impressed. read more

This was my first time having brunch on a Saturday! I guess you could technically have a breakfast+lunch brunch any day of the week, but I've never gone for brunch at a restaurant on any day other than Sunday. My friend and I arrived at 9:50AM, so we were one of the first to be seated when the restaurant opened at 10AM. No waiting necessary for us! =) I tried the Dutch Pancake, which as our waitress described was more similar to a savory crepe, but with all of the toppings mixed-in. (It reminded me of the seafood pancakes of Korean cuisine.) My dining companion ordered the Veggie Mess. My dish was amazing! It was oddly soft on one side and crispy on the other half (perhaps the pan/grill was not heated evenly?), but tasty nonetheless. My plate also came with some seasoned potatoes. If you want to add some heat, there is Sriracha sauce on the table. (SIDENOTE: Why is Sriracha EVERYWHERE in Richmond?! I'm definitely not used to seeing it outside of Asian establishments, lol.) The restaurant itself was warm and cozy, although I was having an in-depth conversation with my friend during the meal, so I didn't really spend much time looking around and taking in the sights. It also got progressively more crowded during my meal, with people standing in the aisles and walkways right by our booth to avoid waiting out in the cold. Our server was super friendly; she was also very tall! I also remember the water tasting very good for some reason. I didn't really feel full enough after finishing my pancake, but since my friend was paying for my meal, I didn't want to order any more food. Fortunately, our waitress asked if we wanted any complimentary toast, and I said yes, so she brought a basket with two slices of toast, some butter, and preserves.(The bread was whole grain, which pleased me, since I'm not a fan of white bread.) Two slices of bread spread with scrumptious blackberry preserves really hit the spot! Unfortunately, I accidentally left my scarf and beanie at the booth, and when I called the restaurant from home to ask if they had seen it, they said they were too busy to check for me now, and to call back between 2:30-3:00PM. Since I didn't want to wait three hours, I just stopped by Millie's on my way out for grocery shopping around noon, and was relieved to find my missing items placed atop a coat rack. It was a beautiful spring day and I was looking for a late lunch spot. Driving around I found this charming gem and bonus I found a parking spot right in front of the row homes adjacent to the restaurant. I quickly run in and was reassured that I am good with parking and don't need a special permit. For lunch I had the spinach salad with grilled salmon and avocado. I loved it. Everything was so delicious. My server was so attentive and she came by multiple times to check on me. We also had a good chat and I found out that the restaurant owner does a lot of volunteer work at a local dog rescue. The restaurant supports the rescue via sales of the lost dog t-shirts. I love it! Returned to Millie's after maybe six years, after the occasional dinner and somewhat more frequent brunch back in the day. I'm a competent cook who scrambles eggs on the regular, so I was never so wowed by the messes, but lots of folks seem to like them. Well, for dinner during Fall 2018 Restaurant Week, the food was fine, but there was a mixup with the bill, and the management has been unresponsive. First, the food: there was one vegetarian option for each of the first two courses, so no debilitating paradox of choice. The kale salad with blue cheese and spicy pralines dressed with a sweet vinaigrette was perfectly balanced. The entrée, butternut squash noodles--that is, hand-julienned squash as "noodles"--in cream sauce, was at first savory and comforting, but so rich and full of fiber that it became tedious to attempt to finish the dish. Because the other dessert option was pumpkin cake, and we were both already overfull of butternut squash, we chose the baked apple, shortbread, mousse, and gêlée (pictured) item, whose components were delicious but confusing to put together. I especially liked the lemon-ginger gêlée, though. The mixup with the bill happened when we split the check. My friend was comped a glass of wine because she's friends with the owner, and she had tipped on that amount, for a larger total than mine. When the charges were processed, we were charged each other's checks. At least it wasn't intentional fraud. The service was fine, but it was weird of the server to hover over us while we were filling in the tips. I had already left a more than 25% tip on the total (more than 27% pre-tax), so being charged even more than that was just annoying. I left a message with the restaurant last week, but my call has not been returned. I, too, will not return. read more

I had to circle the block a few times, but eventually found street parking close to the restaurant. If you're in a rush, you may want to get dropped off here. The ambience here is perfect. The lighting is low & the spacing is cozy with just enough space between tables/booths. Millie's offers a really relaxed atmosphere with an ability to request jukebox songs from your table. The musical selections here are really great. The menu items are also very affordable. I happily ate fantastic Corn Chowder with a beautiful Caesar Salad. I'm going to go head and give Millie's 4stars because my partner loved them and I thought they were mediocre to good. We went here this past Saturday morning for brunch. The owner kindly greeted us, chatted it up about it being our first time, and explained that usually it's a much longer wait so we were in luck. He's a real pleasant, somewhat whimsical guy. He offered us a drink as we waited and my partner got a mimosa which he thoroughly enjoyed. They played an interesting mix of music, which I believe came straight from the music box on the bar area. After a short wait we were seated. The main dining area is small and cramped, which seems to be regular for RVA independent establishments. We were comfortable despite the squishyness. Our server was very nice and asked if it was our first time. Because it was, she went on to explain the specials and their signature dishes. I ordered the grilled salmon breakfast. My partner got the breakfast enchilada with crab meat. My dish had a lot of liquid in it, which ruined the eggs because all the yolk ran into the liquid and disappeared. The salmon was delicious. The asparagus was fresh and yummy (it was actually my first time ever eating asparagus in 29 years of life). I didn't care much for the hollondaise sauce. My partner raved about his meal, and can't wait to go back and try more items. The breakfast potatoes though - I HATE spicy and my partner LOVES spicy. Therefore I couldn't stomach them and my partner ate them up fast. Question: can they be prepared not spicy? My understanding is that Lulu's and Tio Pablo are under the same ownership. I don't know how I manage to keep running into these hipster brunch places when I come to Richmond, but they seem to be everywhere. Millie's is no exception. You know what these hipsters can do? They make a killer breakfast that doesn't cease to amazing. We came here over a weekend and managed to score a spot by the window. A festival was going on this particular morning, and it was our understanding that since that was taking place - we were lucky to get in as quickly as we did. Typically there is a long wait on any other normal day. Millie's has a patio solely for the waiting crowd, otherwise, seating is only inside. Our service was decent. We enjoyed her sense of humor. She was very light hearted and had worked here awhile. It was refreshing to see someone who enjoyed what they did for a living. That made the experience more worthwhile. Food was AMAZING. I can't even express it enough. It was one of the best brunches I had in awhile, and you get a lot for what you pay for. Complimentary biscuits come with the meal too!!! Why not 5 stars? Well, there was a bit of an ant problem. They had expressed to us that they had been dealing with it every summer for the last few years. I get ants happen, but I didn't enjoy having a couple of them crawl on me in the middle of my delicious meal. They are by the window in the second dining room. It was not a massive problem, but it was problematic enough where it bothered my dining partner and I while we were eating. We did inform the manager, and she said that was really the only place they were coming in. Just opt for a different seat if you are given an option - otherwise, you should be fine. The menu is somewhat limited, but to me, if you can perfect the dishes you have and they are on demand, why have a huge menu? Seriously, they had things for the pickiest eater -- I am picky. Parking is a little painful. We managed to find spots, but if you can uber - it might be a wiser decision than looking for a place to park down here unless you want to walk a bit of a distance. Wow. Truly wow. I can't say enough good things about this place. First of all, hats off to the staff for running such a busy place and all with ultra chill and friendly vibes. The music was great and since we were sitting at the bar we got front-row seats to the kitchen. It was almost torture watching all those delicious plates come out while we waited for our order. The food was excellent. I got steak and eggs and my friend got shrimp and grits. Easily in the top 10 of brunches that I've had. And I'm serious about my brunches. Excellent Bloody Mary with house-made bloody mix. Bonus points to the kitchen for giving us a sample of their brunch nachos (on the house!) because our ticket accidentally got knocked off of the line. I'm a TX transplant so I didn't realize that this place has been around for awhile. Yay for them! Millie's is an iconic brunch place for Richmonders and visitors alike. Everyone knows Millies for a reason and the long lines on Sunday mornings is a good indicator of the quality of food. Service: they are extremely quick and efficient. Everyone is very friendly and is very proficient in the menu. Food: I usually get the messes (which is what they are known for) but I can never resist a good special! I got the pupusas which they had on their specials that day. It came with a side of pickled purple cabbage and sour cream. They are basically thick pancakes stuffed with pork and cheese I believe. I am not sure how pupusas are generally made but these were very delicious! Especially when you take a bite with the cabbage and the sour cream. Only thing I would say is that it was super dense. I could only eat half of the dish! My boyfriend got the Cajun mess which is always so good. They have big chunks of crawfish which taste pretty fresh! Overall, definitely worth trying!
