Almost 10 years later, Gayle and I enjoyed another Lunch in Madrid, fresh from landing at ABQ. This remains the Turquoise Trail and from there we would later stop in Los Cerrillos on our way to Santa Fe. They call these 2 places "ghost towns" which is a bit of a misnomer. I do think that Madrid and Virginia City Nevada have a similar abandoned mining town vibe that we both found charming. And with the exception of the Virginia City Hat Maker, Madrid has better art. We came in on a Friday and just before a weekend music festival was to begin with the Mine Shaft being a major participant. We missed all than, but wouldn't have minded a little early live music. We snagged a nice outdoor table on the deck and enjoyed 2 different types of delicious brisket, along with generous portion of fries. I had a local beer, while Gayle had wine. Though our "Fat Boy" bike has transferred to a younger rider, we're still livin brighter.. We settled in at the upstairs open patio of the.. "Mine Shaft Tavern".. We slowly scarfed down a large plate of Chile Fries (home cut potatoes crispy fired w. "Christmas" red/green chile w. cheese). Quite scrumptious. Washed down w. a tall glass of "Long Island Ice Tea" by the Lass. And a glass of "Pilsner Beer" by the Lad. A local band played for what seemed like just us, hitting jazz notes appreciated by these vintage Folk..:) This Mine Shaft Tavern has great eats and tunes for everyone. Madrid is a nice getaway scenic ride. I will say this was our first stop going to Santa Fe and it was wonderful! The staff was welcoming, the ambiance is fun and we had great live music. My Dad enjoyed his brisket taco platter and husband enjoyed his shaft brisket melt. The waiter recommended the fish and chips for me and I loved it! We all had a great time here. We walked around the restaurant and they have a cantina section where you can enjoy drinks outside and it had a train out there! I thought that so cool. You will not be disappointed. read more

After walking around town and window shopping, we were hungry and thirsty. The mineshaft was a great option. Service by Debbie was excellent and fun and the food & beverages were quite good. Burgers were the mainstay but there are some surprises...good surprises. Appetizer Crawfish Boudin Balls were excellent. The entrees, (9oz Prime Rib, Angus Bacon Cheeseburger and the Green Chile Mac-n-Cheese were all excellent...meat was cooked to requested temps, and the appetizer and MacNCheese were smoking hot! The remoulade sauce for the Boudin Balls was rich and spicy; the Green Chile Mac was spicy, and creamy and crispy, with the add on bacon adding the right touch. Went with a group for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Highly recommend the encaustic art museum beforehand if heading from Santa fe. Food was delicious. Service was good. Atmosphere was decent. Not sure if we sat in the original bar space as it is a large complex. I had the asada tacos as they were a special. She had a chip-on-her shoulder attitude to each and every one in our party that ordered! She missed an order from one in our group and they had to just cancel and share another's lunch. We stopped here while passing through Madrid on Labor Day weekend, and the whole town was buzzing! The tavern itself wasn't too busy that we couldn't find a seat. We've been to town a few times, but never eaten here. I took an out of town guest to the restaurant. She'd never had a green chile hamburger. I told her that the Mine Shaft had a reputation for a great burger and we both ordered one. We were both very favorably impressed! I have two favorite restaurants in my hometown of Santa Fe, and feel a little chagrined to say that all I've ever had at either one is their green chile burgers; they are that good! We wrote up to Madrid after having made reservations yesterday and were told no issues. Arrived well before reservation time and no one seemed to know anything about reservations. All the staff told us it was first come first serve and they don't take reservations. Well then, why the hell do we do this over the phone? You list to say, after being given the runaround we were sent to the top and you would think that setting us down somewhere was like building a space shuttle. So we said, screw it and just grabbed a few tables, put them together and sat down. Dear God, it is not this hard! So far, we've been waiting 15+ for a drink order; yes I'm writing as I'm waiting! Drink orders are in and a little kip from one of the female servers who we believe took our reservation saying we can't drag tables together and told us we needed to sit over in the partially shaded area while the temperature outside is 90+ degrees. Our waiter was cool and attentive. Calmed us all down from the previous fuckery that happened. Well, the food came out and I was sorry that I did not order a hamburger. I ordered the full house salad. That was a very poor choice! If you're gonna come here and eat and actually want to be fed, you might want to get a burger or something substantial! Hatch chile basket was a good start to the meal, lightly battered with ranch dressing. The mad chile burger is there staple and glad I went for it. Traditional burger with a hatch chile jam along with another tempura hatch chili. It really was a tasty burger with the quality of the meat coming through. Service was quick and attentive! If you are anywhere near Madrid (you know, the town from the Wild Hogs movie), stop here and get a burger with onion rings. The group I was with had been visiting New Mexico for over a week, and all of us felt this was the best burger we had had this trip. The cook was spot on and meat had a good flavor. Onion rings were excellent, and the staff seemed to enjoy being there. I don't know if I'll ever be back that way being from Florida, but I would go out of my way (actually we did so this time) to visit here again. You would think a bar that looks like that would be a gimmick. It's not. The history is real, it's really cool when you're able to talk to your server and greeter about the history of the place and they really know what they're talking about. It's always a plus to have friendly staff on a slow day who are willing to share knowledge. The food is very simple and basic but done so well. It doesn't matter. Even if you haven't heard of Madrid you probably know it. Multiple movies were filmed in or near it. And the John Travolta, Tim Allen movie Wild Hogs was filmed here. The bar where they have a barfight was built for the movie and still exists as Maggies. The town has become an artists community after years of being a coal mining town. Sprawling at one end of the street is the MineShaft Tavern. You feel like you're really entering a mine shaft and it can be confusing. The bar (the longest bar in NM) is to the right, the Cantina to the left. It's funky and has a fun vibe. The outdoor patio is a great way to view the town and get some sun with umbrella covered tables. They have a great cocktail and Beer and Wine selection with lots of local choices. The Food is really good too. We've had the green chile burger, the mushroom burge and the brisket melt. All delicious. If you're visiting ABQ or Sant Fe it's worth the hour drive to this cool little town and a good meal. read more

The bar is not too large and not too small, at lunchtime, there was a gently hum of diners talking, the music was very low. We sat at the bar and shared some guac and chips and a vegetarian green chile, and one silver coin margarita. This was plenty and we were full for $35. The veggie green chile was top notch. So, I've had three not great experiences in a row, so I have to review this place. First time I went to see a band that didn't show up, so maybe not their fault. Second time, sat in the smaller bar area, and the food was okay, but I definitely felt like I was crashing their insider party. Today was the worst. Went to see someone perform, and the top area outside was closed, but no one said it was closed...no signage...nothing. After about 20 minutes, I went into the bar to see what was going on. The guy yelled at me that it was closed. I asked if we could order something at the bar and still sit there, and he said no. We waited around for a table, and when one opened, we sat there and again waited about 15 minutes and no one would acknowledge us. I didn't see a hostess or any waiting list. After asking two people who said they could not help us, the waitress snapped at us for sitting at a dirty table. It was really incredible that everyone who spoke to us was so awful. I'm never going back there, and I guess it doesn't matter, because they seem to have a busy business. But...if you have a bad experience, you have been warned. read more

When we go to Madrid, we always eat here. We were seated promptly and then waited and waited to be waited on. They were not that busy on a Wednesday. We ordered chips and salsa and got the smallest 1/2 basket of chips and some very spicy salsa. The fried artichoke hearts was a minuscule amount of mostly individual tiny artichoke leaves and an about 4 partial artichoke 1/4's that had a very thick covering of batter and were incredibly greasy. It came with a tiny, tiny dish of ranch dressing. Two of the kids got large hamburgers and fries and were happy. I even took some home to the dogs. The other kid had the Mac and cheese and was very happy with it. The other adult had the chicken enchiladas with black beans and enjoyed them. I had the brisket sandwich. Someone in the kitchen needs to tell the chef how to slice the brisket and not just have random slabs and chunks hodgepodged together. It was in a brioche bun and I had the BBQ sauce on the side. I had to dismantle the sandwich to cut up and eat each bit of brisket. The coleslaw was sweet and creamy. When it was tine for our bill, on the electronic screen, you have the options of 18%, 25%, and more or custom. Sorry, but I think is pretty presumptuous. The service was far from great. read more

Back to Mineshaft again. About 4 pm on a summer Friday, not too busy. I had the signature green chile cheese burger, my wife had the similar Tavern Burger. With onion rings, of course. I don't eat burgers all that often, so I come here when I crave one. Nicely prepared, delicious, flavorful. The deep-fried green chile is a plus. And the great selection of draft brews always helps. I took a road trip to Santa Fe, and some of the ladies from my solo travel group suggested I take the Turquoise Trail and I'm so glad I did. I had no idea the movie Wild Hogs had filmed here, so of course I had to make a stop at this cool spot in Madrid. I had their spicy margarita which was soooo yummy, and their hatch chili burger was the bomb! I had the buffalo, and it was so delicious. Definitely in the top burger category. This spot is a little ways off the beaten pad and you can tell because there's no internet service. Thankfully, they do have it at this bar and they post the password on the blackboard behind the bar. This place has lots of character starting with the thousands of dollar bills posted to the back wall behind their liquor bottles. There's vitually no AC here, just ceiling fans, 2 window units and an evaporation machine. They've got a full bar and a live music soundstage at the back. We started off with some drinks along with chips and salsa. The chips and salsa were very mediocre, but they make a good margarita on the rocks. The burgers are a big hit here.
