    Yellow cake
    Tiffany Y.

Minerva Bakery has operated for almost 100 years! Their menu lists desserts such as cakes, cookies, and rolls. Prices are reasonable. My family members are originally from McKeesport, and they have been buying desserts from Minerva for probably decades. They particularly love the cakes, and they often bring the cakes to family get-togethers. Recently, for a birthday party, we bought a chocolate cake and a yellow cake from Minerva. The cakes were moist and flavorful, and the icings were very sweet. The icing on the chocolate cake did fall off, but maybe we just were not careful enough with transporting the cake. A few weeks later, for a party at my house, a family member bought two more cakes--yellow and chocolate--from Minerva. The icing somehow fell off one side of the chocolate cake (that side is not shown in my photo). I enjoyed the flavor of the yellow cake, and I did not try the chocolate cake. I think that these cakes are good but not my all-time favorite.

This bakery is a true diamond in the rough. Their raisin bread is delicate and just the right amount of sweet. The chocolate dipped chocolate chip cookies are another favorite of ours. We recently tried their cinnamon rolls for the first time, and they lived up to the high expectations that I have for Minerva goods. It seems like you can't go wrong with anything baked here. If you're in the area, or even if you're not, this place is definitely worth a stop.

We stopped by on a sat morning and this place was bustling! The street was pretty quiet, so there was plenty of street parking. They didn't have a lot of breakfast options, mostly just donuts and danishes. There were quite a few kinds of each though. I tried their cheese danish, and it was delightful. The staff was friendly and the service was prompt. Donuts and danishes aren't my favorite breakfast items, but my danish was pretty yummy.

Having grown up in Jefferson Hills, I have been to Al's Cone Zone more times than I can remember…read more It is a classic, reasonably priced establishment that is beloved by locals and visitors alike. Al's is located on State Route 885 in Jefferson Hills, just to the right of the entrance to 885 Park and Baseball Fields. The building is a bright blue, and covered with fun paintings of ice cream and other items they sell. So, you definitely will not miss it. It is a seasonal operation that usually runs from sometime in March to sometime in October. There is a ton of parking here. You will find some spots in front of the windows. Due to no fault of Al's, I personally find these a little difficult to get in and out of, just with the nature of 885 as a road. To the right of the building, there is a large parking lot, with spaces much easier to get in and out of. Al's purchased this parcel a few years ago, and made it into an expanded lot. There is a walkway leading to the building right from this lot. This visit in particular was this past September. I was in the area eating dinner, so I decided to stop by Al's for dessert on the way back. I arrived around 8:50 PM, and they closed at 9:00, so naturally there was not much of a wait at this time. The store is a classic outdoor ice cream stand. Meaning that you walk up and order at the windows, and there is no indoor seating. However, there are plenty of benches and picnic tables on either side of the building. Depending on the time of day that you visit, these might be full, so next best thing would be to tailgate at your car! I have tried a large amount of the menu here over the years, and there are a lot of great items. The Tornadoes are huge, and there are so many toppings available to mix in. Cones and dishes are gigantic, regardless of the size. I like the Ice Cream Sandwiches, particularly the ones with either the Chocolate Chip Cookie or the Peanut Butter Cookie. Milkshakes are tasty as well. In the fall, they will have Pumpkin Ice Cream, and tend to have other specials throughout the spring and summer. I have personally never tried the food items, but I imagine they are good! On this visit, I kept it rather simple with a Small Vanilla Cake Cone with Cherry Dip. As I said, the cones are very generous, so I normally stick to a small size. This one was a little porous and uniquely shaped, but that does not matter so long as it tastes good. It definitely did! The person who waited on me was friendly and quick. I understand it can be annoying to have customers so close to closing time, but I appreciated their demeanor and service on this day. The value here is pretty great. Most of the items are soft-serve, so naturally it will be less than hand-scooped ice cream. My cone was under $5, and that included getting the add-on of dip. Al's has always been a crazy good value, and I believe they still are. In the past few years, they also started to take cards. So, no reason not to stop by! Some bonus aspects of Al's are that they will give you a free Pup Cup with your purchase. My dog loves ice cream, so I take advantage of this often. Also, they offer a Punch Card if you ask for one when placing your order. So, if you buy 10 items, you will get one free once you present the card. I have always been a fan of Al's, and now try to stop by whenever I can. I do not live as close anymore, but it is still worth it to come by every once in a while for some delicious treats. The owner is very kind, as well as all of the staff. The product is good, and there really is something for everyone here. Plus, the atmosphere and overall value really bring it over the top. If you find yourself in the Jefferson Hills/Clairton/West Mifflin area anytime soon, make sure to stop by Al's!

We also appreciated the outdoor seating, which made it a nice spot to enjoy our treats on a beautiful day. The only things we would love to see are a few more Dole Whip flavor options. While waiting for the doors to open, an employee named Colleen unlocked the entrance. As I was holding my daughter's hand, she unexpectedly reached out and briefly grabbed Colleen's hair. I immediately stopped her, sincerely apologized, and had my daughter apologize in her own nonverbal way. Instead of showing understanding, Colleen asked if we were staying. When I said yes, she responded in a harsh tone, "Well, control her!" I explained that I had already apologized and that my daughter is nonverbal and autistic. Colleen then took the menus and walked away. The manager witnessed the entire interaction. When I expressed my concern, he replied, "She didn't say she wasn't going to serve you," and walked away. He never apologized, offered another server, or made any effort to resolve the situation. My daughter and I left feeling embarrassed and unwelcome. This experience left me with the impression that the staff were not adequately trained to interact with or accommodate children with autism and other developmental disabilities. I hope Eat'n Park provides disability-awareness training so that all families are treated with patience, dignity, and respect.

The woman who is spreading this nonsense went into this 7/11 and grabbed about 25+ of the coffee creamers. When the woman got to the counter to buy her medium sized coffee, the owner told her that the amount of creamers she took for a single coffee was too many to be given away for free and that she would need to pay a couple dollars for the additional 20 or so creamers. She refused to pay for them, arguing that as a result of the creamer station indicating no explicit limit that she therefore had a right to take as many as she wanted for free. The owner then gave her an ultimatum, which was to either give back the property or that he would call the cops. She asked him to call the cops, and he did. When the police arrived at the scene, the officer asked the woman to return the creamers to the owner. Unfortunately for the owner, this woman filmed this incident, and repeatedly said "he callin the cops on me for takin' 3 creamers". In the footage, she makes sure to never purposely film the creamers, and cuts the footage at particular parts to make sure it does not show them. However, there is a split second in the video where you can see how many is in the bag, which perfectly illustrates why the owner wanted them back: she had closer to 30 than 3. I have attached that image to this review. The video is roughly a year old, but randomly enough, she has begun sharing the video again while also doxing the owner in the comment section. Her claim is that he called the cops on her for taking 3 creamers in an attempt to have her killed by police because she is black. I am a big supporter of the current reform movements, but it is obvious that she sees this moment of societal volatility and civil unrest as an opportunity to enact revenge on the owner, who did ultimately get his property back from the woman. Another reviewer mentions that the "police demand that the owner give her a refund" and that is also a lie. After the cop asks her to give the creamers back, she seems shocked and irritated, and while returning the bag of creamers to the owner also begins to demand that the owner give her a refund for the $3.14 that she spent inside the store, part of which was for a partially consumed coffee. Without hesitation the owner says yes and refunds her entire purchase. The police officer says nothing relating to the refund. The owner unilaterally gave her money back for an item (the coffee)that he most certainly did not have to refund. I don't normally go out of my way to do this kind of thing, but I feel obligated to do what I can. It's a bad time for many, especially African Americans, but no one should be accused of racism falsely, particularly when violence is becoming more and more widespread. Ironically, this woman (whose name I kindly omitted from this review) is doing exactly what she accuses the owner of having done to her.
