Came here on a cold Saturday morning because several have recommended this bakery on Walnut Street. Since it's just a small walk-in, we purchased a few goodies and took them to a cafe to enjoy them with some coffee. They have two cases of their delicious looking pastries, one table of discounted items, and a case serving hot items. Open that case and serve yourself the hot mini quiches and empanadas. Started with a mini quiche and a beef empanada. Hubby liked his quiche. I'm not a fan of olives and they were all over my beef empanada. Will not be getting that one again. The kind young lady behind the case helped us order our very first Burnt Almond Torte. It comes in different sizes and we chose the bar as it easily serves two. She even gave us sporks to eat it with. We really loved the Burnt Almond Torte. The inside has a soft, moist vanilla cake layered with a thin layer of icing and enrobed with more icing and topped with the buttery, crunchy almonds. We will be back for more. read more

We, recently, moved to the area and decided to try Prantl's today. We ended up with the Burnt Almond Torte Bar, a quiche, and an Empanada. I started with the quiche and enjoyed it; the crust was just average but the egg filing was very good. My wife was not a fan of the empanada so we will not get that again. It was around 10 hours before we tried our Burnt Almond Torte...wow! That dessert is something that I will eat again, and again. The toasted almonds were soooo good! They were crunchy, crispy, and perfect. The Bar Cake had a white cake inside and icing on the outside; it was heavily coated in those almonds. The person who assisted was knowledgeable about the items to a point; she did not eat anything in the bakery so it was by observation. Don't care, that Burnt Almond Torte is the real deal! read more

I stopped into Prantl's on a Saturday afternoon for sweets and savories, and I was not disappointed! I ordered a three-cheese quiche, and it was delightful. The crust was buttery and fluffy, and the eggs were perfectly cooked. I also took home a few cookies, and they didn't even last 24 hours. They remind me of the sugar cookies a relative only makes for the holidays, so now I'll be able to get my cookie fix year-round! I was also in and out of Prantl's within minutes, but be prepared to wait if arriving when they first open! But, overall, you will love what Prantl's has to offer. read more

Finally got around to trying this very famous cake that some call the best in the USA. The burnt almond torte. Tried for a special occasion, the torte and the carrot cake pastry. The burnt almond torte was very good. The best I've ever had? Maybe, but not for sure. The cream is so tasty, the cake itself is soft and surprisingly flavorful with some vanilla, and the almonds are just so so good. So crunchy and sugary. It is really good and well worth the price. I love that they have smaller bars now, which are actually still quite large. However, can't say the same about the carrot cake. It was so tiny and not that flavorful at all. I came to this location after finding out the Forbes Ave location is closed permanently. I was warmly greeted and then overwhelmed by all of the selections of pastries. The staff patiently waited for me to peruse all of the cases. I ended up getting about 8 items and only paid about $23! The Jr Pecan rolls were a perfect bite. I really wanted to like this local bakery.....but everything we tried was just okay. The pastries we tried were a little crumbly and tough and not very buttery (which made me think they are probably not made with real butter and instead a substitute). We recently celebrated our parents' 50th anniversary and wanted to recreate their original wedding cake. After reaching out to several bakeries, only Prantl's was able to bring this vision to life--and they did an absolutely incredible job. We worked with Shanon, who was wonderful from start to finish. We sent her a 50-year-old photo of the cake, and she and the team perfectly captured every detail. The result was stunning and tasted just as amazing. I grew up only eating Prantls and if it didn't come from Prantls it was not as good. Thats not my thoughts anymore. I recently drove the 45min to Shadyside for a cake and my family and I were disappointed. I will say it was fresh but the batter amd icing did not have flavor. It was not good amd it was nothing like we all use to love. I also was sticker shocked at a $47 price tag on a round cake for 8-10. I will be moving on next time to another bakery closer to Cranberry. I hear the up and coming Wegmans is a great bakery. read more

We used Prantl's for our wedding cake because the burnt almond torte is my favorite thing on the planet. They worked closely with me on exactly how I wanted it to look and the size, and the details of getting my decorations to them ahead of time. They delivered it to my venue about 40 minutes away and everything went flawlessly. They even advised us that it was a better decision to not get the extra layer to freeze for our anniversary because it doesn't freeze well, and to save the money and get a fresh little cake when the time comes (which is this weekend!) read more

When visiting Pittsburgh I always say there are the 3 P's of food destinations and Prantl's in Shadyside is one of them. (Right next door is Pamela's). When visiting my alma mater (Carnegie Mellon) recently, I had to go to Shadyside, site of my old haunting grounds, for breakfast. Much had changed over the years but Prantl's is still a fixture. I was going to a friend's home for dinner and wanted to make sure I brought some of their Famous Burnt Almond Torte. It was a small affair so I bought one piece of the Pastry, one of the raspberry and one of the Custard. Pittsburghers are always happy when someone brings Prantl's over. By the way, I picked up some cookies as well that I flew back with me to California and ate 3 days later and they were amazing. You can order the tortes two days in advance to make sure they don't run out but the lady assured me over the phone that they wouldn't. We had a 40 minute wait for breakfast next door and I made my order in advance and they told me they could hold it for pickup later in the day as it was 80 degrees and humid out. We came back 3 hours later and took the cakes back to our hotel room and into the fridge. Everyone was so friendly, helpful, and accommodating. Went in asking for a ham and cheese croissant warmed up, and the person at the register said "I guess we could do that" like warming up a croissant is an unusual thing to ask for. Got my warmed-up croissant and started eating it, realized there was one half-slice of ham folded up and what I believe to be no cheese. I am sad to say that this place had poor service and even poorer food. (should've just gone to Starbucks down the street) as someone that loves supporting small businesses!! My son-in-law's birthday was approaching during our visit in Pittsburgh recently and I wanted to find him a special birthday cake. Not being a native to the area I started my search on Yelp and was determined to seek out a promising bakery in the area.  I eventually settled on Prantl's Bakery, located at 5525 Walnut St, in Pittsburgh's Shadyside area, that's a renowned bakery that's been serving the community since 1970. With a rich history and an inviting atmosphere, that offers a wide range of baked goods, from cakes and pastries to cookies and bread. When I read that the bakery's founder, Henry Prantl, developed their famous Burnt Almond Torte, which has been praised as the "Best Cake in America" from several sources, I knew I had to check it out. This renowned dessert, along with other popular items such as the Chocolate Chip Cookie, Almond Cookies, Raspberry Thumbprints, Apple Strudel, Cinnamon Rolls, Elephant Ears, Peanut Butter Pie, Cheese Danish, Apricot Kolache, and much more, hooked me!  In addition to its sweet treats, they also offer  custom cakes, catering services, and a cafe where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry. Even better the cake was a BIG hit with everyone and I was very pleased with the not-too-sweet delight. Stopped after lunch because I wanted a sweet treat. Figured pals is one of the best shots to go to right? I thought so. Though I do have to rave about the chocolate buttercream icing on the thumbprint was fantastic! But the Beetlejuice cupcakes decoration, cute, and festive for the time of year. And the movie as well. What a great, old school bakery with a huge variety of baked goods! This bakery is super cute and small, but has tons of products! I wanted to try a homemade sweet treat, and I had a hard time picking what to get! I ended up going with the red velvet whoopie pie and a box of heart sugar cookies for my family. The workers were friendly and helpful! I tried the red velvet whoopie pie and it was super delicious! Love the flavor of the cake and the buttercream icing. However, the top side of the whoopie pie was dry. I did get it in the afternoon, and it felt like it had been sitting out for a bit. Maybe wrapping it in plastic wrap would help keep it more moist! I called the bakery on August 27 and was told by Shannon the cake is in the system to be picked up today August 28. My son went to pick my cake up and was told there was no cake on order. Needless to say I was not happy. My son ended up buying a cake from inside the counter. Prantls cannot be trusted to buy anything from and therefore I will never buy from there again. well regarded as one of the "best cakes," i was curious to try the burnt almond torte from prantl's bakery. this slice of cake comes at a price - $7.99 for one. but i decided to try due to the raving reviews. maybe too good to be true? the cake slice is a decent size and they gave it to me in a box with plastic utensils. the outside is crispy burnt almonds that are lightly salted with a very sweet cream or icing. the inside is a very light angel food cake. i think there is supposed to be some cream/custard filling in between the two layers but my slice was very scarce. overall, i did like the toasted almond taste. however, the outside layer was far too sweet and then the inside was very simple and dry. it was too sweet so i finished it later that day and the cake part became hard. ultimately i'm glad i tried it but i'd pass on it next time. read more

Someone has commented to the effect that different branches have different recipes (I'm paraphrasing)...unfortunately that's true. Much as I want the (new) Bellevue branch to succeed, after trying them a few times I still think they're skimping somehow. The huge cookie I had last time, with a couple tablespoons on chocolate lard on top was tasteless and the hamantaschen that's so good at the other stores was definitely inferior, as was the lemon loaf. Unfortunately Squirrel Hill doesn't seem to be able to keep staff and they've closed, but the North Side and Shadyside still offer the best pastries...c'mon Bellevue--straighten up ! read more

I originally wrote a review for the Prantl's Bakery in Bellview -- the one that used to be Lincoln Bakery. But, it was originally posted to the Shadyside location. Nonetheless, I'll include it below, since it is the same organization. I still hope that Prantl's can do the right thing by the former customers of Lincoln Bakery. We visited Prantls' (in Bellview - the former Lincoln Bakery) on October 29, after not being there for a while, and were so disappointed. We'd been Lincoln Bakery customers for years and were hopeful when it seemed that Prandtl's wanted to keep the spirit of Lincoln alive. The first thing one noticed - there were none of the signature Lincoln Halloween cakes in the windows that seemed to mark the season in such a warm way. Okay, we still wanted the place to be good. But, once inside, it just felt so different. The place seemed empty with people behind the counter overly eager to please the few customers. We purchased quite a few items - the almond torte, thumbprint cookies, cannoli, doughnuts and a cake. The usual Lincoln items were not there - iced pound cake and Ho-Ho cake. But, again, we wanted to have an open mind. The person who helped us told us that the shelf from which we purchased the cake was a "Lincoln shelf." So, we happily purchased the cake and could not wait to consume that wonderful, Lincoln icing. Instead, what we received was an overly layered cake with the kind of sickly-sweet icing that one might find at Giant Eagle. We were further mislead when it came to two almond doughnuts we purchased - which we were told were croissants. They were ordinary - and not very good doughnuts. Yes, the almond tortes are good. But the thumbprint cookies are stacked with that overly sweet icing. They have this odd station where they fill cannoli on demand, so we tried the "traditional" and "buttercream" filling. These were also disappointing - once again, overly sweet and the shell is not an improvement over Lincoln's. Is it worth going there just for the almond torte? Unfortunately, no. I wish the owners would do better and bring back what was special about Lincoln Bakery - especially the icing - but some of the more popular items as well. The crowd they seem to be targeting can go to Prantl's original location (or Giant Eagle) if they like that sort of thing. read more

I'm not sure why they would close their other locations closer to downtown. This location is a little out of the way but it was a much worth the drive. I bought their burnt almond torte. I wasn't sure on what to expect honestly, but damn. I all I need was our quick bite and I was instantly sold. Its creamy, crispy; and a perfect amount of sweetness all on the outside. I would order this again and again. I don't have any plans on returning to Pittsburgh so I would have to see if they ship these bad boys to Chicago. I'd you're in the area, this is a must. I had gone to one of Prantl's other locations and was very disappointed both in service and pastries. I was in the mood for some pastry and decided to give Prantl's another chance by going to another location. I walked in and was greeted immediately and the staff where very friendly and very helpful. The selection was good and everything looked great as well. I ordered 2 almond chocolate croissants. I have to say I was again disappointed in the amount of chocolate actually in the chocolate croissants. I have to say the pastry was fresh and tasted great. My only complaint is that there was virtually no chocolate in the chocolate croissant. I give them 5 stars for service and overall taste of product very fresh. But as with other location no chocolate int he chocolate croissant so i give them 3 stars overall. I would go back to this location and try some other items. At least today I grabbed Bartram House for their bear claws and had some tremendous redemption. The world needs more cute little bakeries, and Prantl's is here to save the day! Unfortunately there aren't many around me, and do-everything chains like Giant Eagle just don't get the job done. I've enjoyed finding French patisseries like La Gourmondine, but when the mood for classic all-American treats hits this is the place to go. As an artist I've been visiting Shadyside for years to visit Blick or to grab some of my favorite Pittsburgh-area pizza and gelato at Mercurio's. Being in the area I had to finally visit. I decided to pop into Prantl's to browse and didn't leave empty handed, as that should be illegal! Large glass windows provide a sneak peek of items beginning to be eaten. Although small, they have a wide variety including cakes, donuts, muffins, cupcakes, and cookies. I picked out a blueberry scone and mini red velvet cake. It wasn't until after my purchase and inquired about being overcharged that I was shown a sign on the side of the counter. I went to Prantl's Bakery on June 21, 2025 to order a custom cake needed for July 12, 2025. The staff stated that my order was too complicated to be filled out on the paper form they have. I was instructed to use the online form where an image can be uploaded. I was provided an email (orders@prantlsbakery.com) and phone number (412-569-7462; different from the number on the website, 724-837-3706) of their call center to follow-up after place my online order. And they told me the call center was closed for the day. On June 24th, 26th, and 28th I submitted an online form with no confirmation of order receipt, nor response by email/phone. I called the call center on June 30th; no one answered. I sent an email around 3pm to the call center asking if my order was received. I did not receive a reply. On July 1st at 12pm, I called the call center. No one answered; I left a voicemail asking if my order was received and left a callback number. I did not receive a return call. On July 2nd at 9:43am, I sent another email to the call center asking if my order was received, and I included details and photos of the design for the custom cake I ordered. I did not receive a response. On July 2nd at 1pm, I called the call center again. A woman answered, and I asked if my order was received. The woman said that my emails were received and responded to; she claimed she had just sent a second response. (I did a "keywords" search through my email; there was no email from Prantl's.) She then told me that my request could not be filled for July 12th. I asked if I changed my design to a more basic design would my order be accepted. She stated that no orders could be filled for July 12th. There was no further explanation or accommodation. It is not acceptable that there was no response to multiple emails and calls, and that an order placed 2 weeks in advance cannot be filled. read more
