A JOB WELL DONE We have a long concrete driveway that curves up a hill to our home. The driveway is 47 years old and was in need of repairs to the driveway and to replace a low curved concrete wall on one side of the driveway, which was badly damaged by time and a large truck. From the Yelp website, I selected 3 five-star contractors for bids to repair the driveway. I'm in my late eighties and handicapped, but in my younger days I worked in construction starting back in 1952 as an apprentice carpenter. I have worked on many projects where I built forms to pour concrete for homes, high rise buildings, and underground tunnels. I have also worked on cementing casing in oil wells as deep as two miles and I have personally poured and finished concrete at my own home. So needless to say, I know a lot about concrete and construction in general. Now that I'm too old and crippled up to work, I'm always apprehensive when I have to hire men to work for me. All too often you get people who lack the skill and experience to do a proper job and often, they don't care how the job turns out. Then they leave behind a mess for the homeowner to clean up. When Oswaldo Minez came to look the job over prior to submitting a bid, I was very impressed with his knowledge and attitude. He told me he was the son of a father and son business and that was my background as well until my father's early death at a young age. The bid from Minez Concrete was the lowest bid and I gave them the contract. A few days later they called to say they had an unscheduled delay in their next job and they could begin work at our home. Oswaldo said they would show up at 7 AM and to my surprise the crew arrived right on time and every day thereafter. Oswaldo's father, Ramon is in charge of the actual work and I could tell right from the start that Ramon is an old school craftsman. He has trained his crew to be competent workers. Too often companies in southern California show up with a boss, who doesn't know what he is doing, and untrained men hired to work by the day. Not the Minez Company, their men are professional workers, who know their craft. On several occasions I have hired people and had to stand there all day making sure the job was done right and sometimes pitching in myself to do the job. After watching the Minez crew for a short time, I knew we were in good hands and I went back into the house. Every time I came out to observe progress there was Ramon supervising his men while working beside them to give us a first-rate job. The repairs all turned out beautifully and several people have commented upon how nice the driveway looks. To be honest, I wasn't expecting the work to go so smoothly and quickly. It was such a surprise and relief to be treated so well with a beautiful result. Oswaldo kept us informed regarding progress and his suggestions and those of Ramon contributed greatly to the final outcome. Fast, reliable, honest, communicative, and professional: These are all words that can be used to describe Minez Concrete. Our back yard's concrete block wall was failing and needed replacement. The project was complicated by the fact that on top of the wall, we have a vinyl fence. The fence had been a necessary addition when we bought the house years ago, because the wall was low. We could have just rebuilt the wall taller, but there were several reasons why we did not. First, we already had the vinyl planks, which are in excellent condition. Second, the block wall is part of a housing development, and we wanted to maintain the consistent height of the block wall. Third, it was less expensive to reuse the fence. Mr. Minez gave a reasonable estimate for rebuilding the wall, and unlike one of the other companies bidding on the job, he agreed to install the fence on top of the wall (which was done well). The job took about two weeks to fully complete. It involved tearing down the old wall, digging for a new footer, pouring the footer, constructing the wall, tying the new wall to existing walls, and installing the fence. Throughout the project, I was kept informed of the project's progress and any issues that were important. I was quite pleased that we received no hidden change in price after completion of the project. Oswaldo Minez, the owner of Minez Concrete, was the fastest to respond to my request for quotes. I had a fairly small job that he and his team finished in one day. I needed to extend our back patio/walkway just a bit. Oswaldo was very friendly and professional. I was able to get a quote with basic measurements and a couple of photos. When he came over yesterday (he was in the area), it became clear there were challenges with the job due to an old tree stump not being completely ground out, but he stuck to his original bid. I'm very happy with how fast and neat he and his team were. There was a lot of equipment involved, including a long hose for concrete delivery to the backyard, but nothing was damaged and everything was clean before they left. Great company great people. They know concrete and they were one of the most competitive quotes we received. They dealt with county inspectors and ensured their work was ready to pass inspection. Our project was a 1200 square foot 4 car garage in Lakeside with 18" by 18" footing foundation that went deeper than 18 inches in a few areas. They had no problems grading, digging, forming, and pumping cement uphill at a distance of over 300 feet. I called and arranged for a site visit and within 4 hours had a quote for a combination slab and lean-to concrete footers for a custom metal barn I was planning to have built. Ramon and Oswaldo were great to work with. They demo'd our existing concrete deck that had sunk over the years (due to it not being properly installed 20 years ago). We added a patio area onto the deck and at the last minute, had them do the steps in concrete as well. They recommended stamping the patio and it could not have come out better. These guys rocked!!! I requested a quote and they had someone out there the next day. Oswaldo was about to give me a quote on the spot, but said he needed to go back to the office real quick. He texted me a quote 30 minutes after he left my house. The project was for a 19' x 15' pad and a 3' walkway that was about 19' long. The guys came under what I was expecting to pay by more than a few hundred dollars. I signed the contract as soon as I got it, and they started the project 3 days later. I vetted them through the Ca State Contractors License Board and met with each one for a walk through the areas that needed repair. After weighing the different estimates, we went with Minez Concrete in Lakeside. Oswaldo Minez gave the estimate, wrote up a detailed scope of work without any ambiguous language in it and he assured us they would protect our landscaping which they had to cross to do part of the work. The estimate covered part of the walkway around the pool, our entryway and the multiple parts of our 200 ft. driveway. I found communication to be excellent with Oswaldo, the son who came out to bid the job. He does not have a portfolio to show previous work done, but their website has some. Everything went very smoothly and timely. His father is very experienced and knows how to get things done. The only issue I had was in framing and pouring the additional pad for a side shed. The dimensions HAD to be exactly 10 x 12 for the shed to fit over the pad. The pad ended up being 1 inch over on one corner, so my contractor needed to come out with a concrete saw and trim it to the needed dimensions. On July 26, 2021, Minez Masonry & Concrete completed a project for me that involved removing ivy from my front yard, excavating dirt, building a 12 inch wide footing, and then constructing a three-foot high three section block wall that was coated with several layers of stucco. This was a $16000 job, so I did my homework carefully before hiring this company. Yelp lists them as an across-the-board five star company.  I agree and am giving them an "A" on this project for several reasons.  They are a family company consisting of a father, two sons, a cousin, and other workers.  The father (I called him "Professor Minez") is an owner/working foreman who is very knowledgeable and skilled. He keeps the workers supplied with needed materials, keeps them on task, and does a lot of the more skilled work himself.  All of the workers show up when they are supposed to, are always on time, and do professional level work.  Don't waste your time researching other companies.
