Not really sure how to rate this one, as my recent experience was hot and cold. When you walk in, there is a sign advertising cappucino in various flavors, including German chocolate (my favorite!!!) So before anything, I ordered one. The waitress told me they don't carry anything but mocha. FALSE ADVERTISING!!! The waitress was very pleasant. Offered various dipping sauces for our fries, including an avocado dip, something I've never seen before. My girlfriend ordered her burger Medium Well with cheddar cheese. It came with American cheese and was pink inside. When we sent it back for "more fire," the waitress said "the cook told me to tell you he didn't mind doing it but he said the next time you order meat and don't want to see pink you should order it Very Well Done." First of all, if a cook tells you to give a message like that to a customer, that is not something you should relay to the customer. It is bad customer service. Diners used to be a big deal in Brooklyn but things have drastically changed. I've been to Mirage frequently over the past 15 years and it has gone down the drain. The food is no big deal. The last time my husband and I went, I had my service dog with me. We were put in the side room where the carpet was filthy. When I asked to have the carpet swept under the table (because they expect your service dog to be entirely under the table, which is fine) the maitre'd rolled his eyes. My soup didn't come out very hot and then a worker was told to vacuum the carpet where we were, so not only couldn't we have a conversation but there was more dust flying around. Disgusting. I have passed by this diner so many times over the years and just never went in until the other night. I'm so glad I did, first of all the staff is very friendly and the place is clean looking. The food and service was very good and an A rating always makes you feel better too. This has been my go-to place since I was a kid and since I moved away from that neighborhood, it's still the diner I go to mostly. The food is good, though there is nothing too special about it that makes it different from any other place, it isn't bad, which is good. The place is clean, the staff aren't the friendliest but that might be because I always go late at night, so I don't blame them for being over-worked and a bit crabby. This place is a better alternative to El Greco, which has completely fallen down the shitter. It's quieter, it's not as pretentious, and the clientele are more sedate. This is a great location if you are expecting a simple, 1-2-3 kinda place. Their menu is so hard to navigate and they seem like the kinda place that you really only enjoy if you are a regular or are from the neighborhood. Otherwise you kinda get shit treatment and I understand we are in Brooklyn where Assholes come a dime a dozen but that doesn't mean you have to be rude to everyone. It also isn't a regular kind of rude...it's that kinda rude you get when you know the staff deals with hundreds of people weekly so they begin to cut corners on being polite. The hostess was also on her phone a lot which I understand but maybe not when we are right in front of you trying to place an order. We waited at the bar table for almost 20 mins when a waiter finally asked if we needed help only to find out that we had to place the to go order with the host in the front...that would have been nice to know. They took our orders quick and fast but the quality of the food was basic diner food so just ....ok. I can't rate you guys any higher because your service seemed unorganized and full of a tired staff but I can't rate you guys any lower because at the end of the day your food wasn't the worst. It's just sad to see a diner be just that...a regular old diner with nothing special. PS. Change up your cocktail list...no one believes you can make those drinks as well as they should be and how about instead you guys focus on what people really want which are better priced desserts and good service. read more

The waitress was super nice and friendly, she was a little older so she made us feel like she was our mother in the best way because of how nice she was!!!! The food is great, the service is amazing. However, the owner wanted to charge me $1.45 for hot water in a coffee cup? I have worked in restaurants my whole life and just told my boss, he laughed at me. I asked the owner why and his explanation was "the coffee cup that your using needs to be washed afterward, if one of the busboys break it, I have to pay for it". I couldn't believe my ears. I also received a cappuccino and it was "foam" on the top with no layers. Cappuccino should have three layers, steam milk on the bottom, espresso in the middle and foam on top. It did not look like this and it was watery. I told the owner and he refused to take it off, I didn't even drink it - which he saw, I just ate the whip cream on top. He ended up taking just the water off, ha. Bottom line, if an owner can not make the customer happy, then why go back. I come here when all the other places in the neighbourhood are closed -- which is very late sometimes. Service is fine, food is good and during the hours I eat there, its' always quiet, which is great! The menu is overcrowded and probably could be trimmed. But otherwise, I've never had a bad experience and I've never gotten sick from the food. I've hopped around on their menu from having breakfast to burgers, souvlaki, and spaghetti bolognaise. I really liked the farmer's omelet that I got (I think that was what it was called). It had broccoli, bacon, zucchini, and cheddar but I asked for no zucchini which they honored. I've seen bigger portions at other diners, esp. the hash browns. We also shared ribs and a salad. Ribs were good, very tender and the sauce was sweet & tangy. Never again! After over 40 years and many different managements, this place has now hit the pits. I used to enjoy going there, but on 4 different recent occasions we finally gave up. The first was at breakfast, when my guests and I had a very talkative and inefficient waitress, who disappeared and had to be called out twice. Our meals were not hot, and problems with them could not be resolved in a timely way, because of her. When I spoke with her about this she got very defensive and gave all kinds of excuses. Not a pleasant breakfast for any of us! The second experience was when I came in alone for an early dinner. I told the manager that I did not want her to wait on me, and explained why. He started to lecture me on being forgiving -- until I told him to stop or I would walk right out and never return. I was given a nice window table on the opposite side of the restaurant, but as I was starting my first course, she showed up, very loudly telling all around her "I never saw him before" And she came over to argue with me. I told the manager to get her away immediately, or I would walk out. Later, on paying for my meal a woman manager came over to apologize and gave me a free plate of cookies to take home. The next occasion was with guests I took there for dinner. Two out of three meals were so bad they had to be returned, with something else ordered. My liver steak was broiled instead of sauteed, and came out like bloated leather. This had to be a new cook. That took a very long time, and the one person had finished eating long before the two replacements were served. Not a good dining experience! The fourth and last time I again took two guests, and we all had to return our main dishes, as they were horrible. On one, I asked the manager to taste the rice, but he refused. It was cold, hard and flavorless, The chicken dinner was not even warm, and over-spiced. So we ordered replacements -- and regretted it. My seafood au gratan was bitter fish and salmon ends and.one shrimp (That's seafood?) on a bed of cool, slightly cheezy rice. We all got up and left the food on the table., In disgust, I paid for our meals and told the young manager I would not come back ever again. Ugh! We wasted over an hour there, but went to the Coney Island diner for a good meal. If the Mirage posts a sign that it is under new management I might try it again. read more

Our family has dined in several times at Mirage over the last few years. The food has been tasty and the portions ample. Since the the spring of 2020, we have had food delivered at least 20 times from this restaurant, but the results have been only fair. The quality of the food has been good, except for the side of limp iceberg lettuce and a half-rotten baked potato. However, half of the orders have had errors ( e.g. substituting veal for eggplant, missing french fries, omitting our credit card slip, or delivering a regular instead of a deluxe order ). They did fix the errors or omissions when brought to their attention, but by that time the delivered portion was cold, or already eaten. The people taking phone orders are very courteous and the orders are delivered in a timely manner, but there seems to be a disconnect somewhere.
