You would have to be a curious sort to go inside and check out the wares. And then you'll find out they sell stuff like steaks, chimis, corn dogs, cookies, etc. What do I come here for? The sandwiches. Their sammies are best bang for buck item in Julian except the apple pie slices and cider donuts. The counter service is always sweet, love them folks. I stop by Julian Market to shop for postcards, snacks, and soda to bring back to my cabin at Cuyamaca State Park. This time around I decided to try one of their deli sandwiches...boy, was I glad that I did. For $10.99 I got a jack cheese sandwich with fresh veggies, plus two (2) delicious pickles. The counterperson asked if I wanted avocado. I politely declined, not because it was $1.00 extra, but because I don't like how avocado mixes with the pepperoncinis that I ordered (they, they being the pepperoncinis, were $1.00 extra). I Went in for a sandwich at their deli counter on a slow Wednesday afternoon and was greeted with an attitude of irritation for asking for sourdough bread. I maintained eye contact, used please and thank you. She huffed and puffed, slammed her hand on the counter because I didn't start off with stating what kind of sand which it was (Turkey, ham, etc.) I felt very unwanted and as if I interrupted her. Camping locally in Julian and our air conditioner unit was not working so we bought a fan from this place in Julian. Meanwhile my husband got through to technical support and was able to get the AC working (we just bought this camper) so we didn't need the fan but I opened it just to look at it.... They would not let us return it even though everything was intact including the packaging the plastic bag it came in was unopened etc.. manager responded that he could not sell it to another customer because they would complain that the box had already been opened?? Seriously?? But he did tell me that I could return it to Walmart where he bought it!! So I scanned the fan and it's $18 at Walmart. He charged us $40.... Talk about up pricing. I don't think we will do business there again. I could understand if we had the fan for days and days and returned it with dust in it and all the things that happened to a fan after it's run for a bit. Very disappointed. Last week We came up on our annual apple pie pilgrimage. We always stop by the CIDER Mill and pick up a quart of raw apple cider. This time they didn't have it. So we tried at this market. It's been around for years and I remembered seeing the cider there in the past. When I asked, the older woman on duty directed me to a refrigerated case full of quart plastic jugs. Relieved and rushing back to our car, I just checked the expiration date--2 week away- and stuck it into the ice of our cooler. I had mentioned how surprised I'd been when Cider Mill didn't have it-the lady said "Oh they haven't had the plain cider in years ". I thought at the time that was odd since we'd gotten it there last year. When we got home and tasted it, I knew I'd been fooled. The label read "flash-pasteurized " and it was nothing like the ambrosia of the raw kind.! Ok, my dad for being in too much of a hurry, but it gets worse--2 days later it was beginning to ferment. It is now full blown and I am afraid to drink it. The date read 10/7, over a week from now. That is the reason for one star. read more

Im with a nonprofit organization that assists homeless veterans and women and children in at-risk situations. After receiving approval from the Store manager, we've visited Julian Market and deli on 2 occasions in the past 2 years doing our outreach and fundraising outside with no issue and loved getting to know the staff and community of Julian. SUCH a beautiful town! However, since our last visit, something has gone terribly wrong with the staff. I called to book another time for us to come out and briefly spoke to the Store manager Leah only to be unknowingly (she didn't tell me) passed to another associate by the name of Keith who began yelling, yes yelling, at me on the phone demanding me tell them which company I'm from (which I had already done with Leah) and telling me Im wasting their time and a bunch of other belligerent and rude nonsense before I finally said "I apologize for the confusion. Have a blessed day" and then I hung up. This call lasted not even a full 2 minutes. I am not writing this review to defame anyone or even to get anyone to not go to this business. While I was not offended by this unfortunate situation (because no one has that power), I was pretty shocked because my other times in dealing with this business have been pleasant. I am highly concerned about the character of those employed and overall atmosphere of this establishment. As I myself am a professional in the business world, I would never allow an employee of mine to treat anyone who comes in or calls as they treated this call today. And as the Store manager, a professional, friendly and approachable attitude should be your #1 goal for patrons. A man yelling at a woman in an abusive manner in any way is concerning. I pray this review opens the eyes of Julian Market and Deli and that the Lord softens their hearts. I was the only customer in the store when I walked into this place. The short lady working the cashier wasn't wearing her mask, nor did she put it over her mouth when myself, or other customers walked into the store. There was also a sign in the front that said if you don't wear a mask you won't be let in, that was a lie. I came in to get sandwiches and the ladies working being the counter were very nice and polite. The only downside was that I waited about 15 minutes to get my two basic sandwiches made. Half way through the process she said that she had to slice up more turkey which was fine with me, then 5 minutes goes by before she says she's out of turkey. I was a little frustrated. When I went to check out at the register for the sandwiches, the short lady in the front was stocking shelves a few yards away. She asked me if I was buying sandwiches and I said yes. She then reacted like I just told her that she was diagnosed with cancer. She was beyond rude and had zero customer service. I'm not a picky person and don't expect anything amazing when I go to a store. Maybe she had some problems going on in her life. However we all do, and we have to be professional at work. Went in to order my daughter a sandwich. Was first concerned that employees were not wearing masks. Then I observed the person making the sandwich (not wearing a mask) on her cell phone. She couldn't answer because she was wearing gloves and got the phone messy so was wiping it off. Then she went back to the sandwich with same gloves she handled her cell phone with. Julian Market is a funky but useful place in a serious tourist town. I often grab a sandwich here when I don't have time to sit and dine. They offer a diversity of items, much like a general store, but I almost always head to the deli counter straight away. Yesterday, I ordered the roast beef sandwich on whole wheat. This came with the works: lettuce, tomato, onion, mustard, and cheese (which I added). They have delightful and moist whole wheat bread, so this was a no-brainer! I asked for deli mustard, which they also had - no problem. I always ask for spicy mustard or deli mustard, and if a place doesn't have it, I know my meal will be substandard. You might surprised how many places indicate that they only have "yellow" mustard. How boring! Anyway, the sandwich was very tasty. It was stacked high with fresh beef and swiss cheese, and I devoured it in just a couple of minutes. I actually ate this sandwich almost as fast as Jeff S eats his! That guy can really pack it away in a hurry. I highly recommend buying your sandwich at the Julian Market. This is the best place in the Julian area, hand's-down. The Julian Market for the area, and the main area spans about 3 blocks, is a good convenience store with fair pricing, especially if you're an out of town tourist visiting and need some snacks or essentials. The store has hours different than that of most of the town's casual 10am to 5pm hours, which makes it even more convenient of a destination. There's not a whole lot of options in Julian, and luckily I feel this market doesn't take advantage of holding residents and visitors hostage to that lack of competition and have a nice 'lil store to service the community. read more

I am an elderly, disabled resident of Julian who shops in this store regularly. Each time I shop, I've found the staff to be perfect to me. I'm banned from Jacks Grocery because the owner got tired of me calling across the store to find out the price of various products. They do not price each item and think that "most people don't care about whether each item is clearly marked". Julian Market, on the other hand, prices each item. Service is horrendous. Went to the market to purchase some items for the cabin. At the register, my mom decided to go in front of us and get lotto tickets. The cashier was visibly nervous and was taking a little longer getting the tickets, but he was nice. My mom left after paying and another employee came over and started talking bad about my mom about how she was taking long to pick her tickets and how she doesn't have time or is in the mood for people like that take forever. I told the employee that she was disrespectful and rude. When you realize you left the healthy lunches you packed for the family at home and you're 45 minutes away from home, you're not going to turn around. I thought for sure we'd have to sit down at a restaurant instead of having a picnic at the apple orchard that I had planned. I quickly got on Yelp and saw that Julian Market sold made to order sandwiches and they looked really good. Perfect! The deli is right up front and luckily there was no one in line so I got to order right away. We ordered 2 turkey sandwiches w/ avocado and I picked up 2 small bags of chips and a bowl of mixed fruit. The sandwiches were made well and they're very generous with their portions. I'm glad we decided to share 2 sandwiches amongst our family of 3 but really, we could've shared just one - that's how large it was. It was made with fresh ingredients and tasted great. My little one ate all the fruit and just had a few slices of turkey and cheese that we pulled out of the sandwich. As I mentioned, they are generous with their toppings so even with those items taken out, we had plenty of sandwich remaining. We had an entire sandwich left that we kept in our cooler for later. As I was waiting for the sandwiches to be made, I got to talking to the gentleman working the cash register. He shared a lot of history with the building. I thought this was the original structure and didn't know it had burned to the ground but rebuilt to nearly the same specs. It still looks very authentic. I'm thrilled an unfortunate situation was saved by Julian Market. I really wanted to have lunch at the orchard and after leaving our homemade meals at home, it was all made possible by Julian Market. My daughter recently ordered the chicken pot pie and on our way out the owner said "after you taste our chicken pot pie you'll say it's the best you've ever had!". They wrap it in paper slice it in half and then wrap it again. If one person can eat this sandwich, then I take my hat off to you.
