We booked this place through OpenTable and I was a bit skeptical of going here since the menu was very diverse. The place was close to our hotel which was even better after exploring Chicago. When we go here we checked in and were asked to stand on the side and we will be seated. It did take awhile to get seated where other folks who didn't have reservations were getting seated before us. A hostess went to our kids menu on the table and then we waited some more. Finally a male host came and sat us. I think that was like a 15/20 wait. Our waitress was friendly and hospitable. She was cool to talk to and attentive to our needs this evening. We got the crispy rice wagyu and those were delicious. We also got the yuzo ribeye and black cod and those were really good. The kids loved the ribeye!!! I tried to get the lollipops but they sold out but I heard they are a great hit too. The noise level was very loud. It was so loud due to a party next to us who had a large gathering and were drinking heavily. Other parties left and the other side of the restaurant was still full with other folks but none around this loud group. Anyways - food wise and the waitress service was great. By far, the strangest food service I've had in a long time. Our table of 4 was seated promptly after showing up a bit early to our reservation. The restaurant wasn't busy at 7pm on Sunday. We ordered a few drinks, a few different dishes, and an entry from the kids' menu. We quickly received our drinks, which were delicious and exciting. A balanced drink containing tamarind? Come on! We then got our first dish, the Wagyu crispy rice. Amazing. Delicious. Then our sushi came out. Also great! Then Adobe fried rice with pork belly. Super satisfying! But then... a total stall. We hadn't yet received our edamame or our chicken entree. Our server asked if we wanted the check. At that point, our food had time to sit and no one was hungry. So our server asked if we were ready for the check. Sure. Our check arrived at the same time our chicken dish showed up. And still no edamame, which was an appetizer. We were also given another table's bill, which was totally different than ours and showed a credit for something and a zero balance. It was fixed, and we ended up paying our $50ish per person with the only adjustment being that we didn't pay for the edamame we never received. Obvious disconnect between the kitchen and service. But the food we did receive was exceptional. Drinks were novel and playful. But forgetting food and a weird service pace really diminished the overall elegance of Sunda. I feel like we drastically overpaid for the dining experience. We are on a family vacation, so instead of memories of a great meal we instead have a story of that messed up service and the weirdness that surrounded. read more

My two friends and I ordered the Korean fried chicken baos, two rolls of sushi (Panda Roll and Sake to Me), and Pad Thai to share. The Korean fried chicken baos were my favorite dish. The crispy chicken was glazed in a sweet and flavorful sauce, and each bao was also stuffed with fresh veggies that provided additional crunch. My favorite sushi roll was the Panda Roll because it included shrimp tempura and was drizzled with a combo of sweet and spicy sauces. The Sake to Me roll was also good, but I could have used some soy sauce to mix with the wasabi for additional flavor. The pad Thai had solid flavor, and I appreciated how it did not skimp on the protein. Sunda is extremely popular. It was very crowded on a Saturday night. I was literally elbow to elbow with the table next to me. It is a moderately upscale place, but it is not somewhere I would go for an intimate experience. I eat a lot of sushi but didn't find their menu appeal for a true sushi eater. I decided to lean more into their cooked dishes as this side of the menu was extensive. The boa buns were huge and the buns themselves were good, but the pork inside was cooked. My friends really enjoyed their sushi rolls, but I've had a lot better. I also didn't too much care for my cocktail. Our waitress was good. She was attentive and accommodating and kind. Pork belly is wonderful, and the shank is tasteless - good that I kept the soy sauce from the sushi. The decor is 4/5: I really like the big door (?)- framed mirror on the exposed brick wall. Continuing with the setting, I noticed Rona stem, Churchill tableware, and fake flowers outside. At this price range, please use the real thing. Especially since this time of year, the tulips are blooming everywhere in the city--so real flowers do survive in the Windy City. A little side story - they pushed their buns three times when we didn't order. The first time was from the couple sitting next to us at the bar. I understand. The second time, they left it for us. Gorgeous aesthetic and a standout spot for Southeast Asian inspired cuisine. I came specifically for the variety, and it did not disappoint. We ordered the scallops, crab noodles, sinigang sour, and a lychee martini, and finished with the chocolate molten lava cake with vanilla ice cream. The scallops were cooked to perfection and buttery. My personal favorite, though, was the sinigang sour cocktail. While it wasn't as tangy as traditional sinigang, it was a creative and well-balanced interpretation. Service truly elevated the experience. I'd heard good things about Sunda so we figured it would be a great spot to go before a show in the Loop. Turns out Sunda was everything we could've wanted and more. All of the food was spectacular. The crispy rice as a starter set the tone, and you can mix and match the wagyu and spicy tuna. I was partial to the spicy tuna but my girlfriend loved the wagyu. For mains, we both went with some rice. She went with a standard chicken fried rice that they were easily able to make Celiac friendly. I believe she went so far as to say that it was the best fried rice she's ever had. For me, I had the crazy rice. I like a little spice in my diet, and the crazy rice delivered. I'd give my experience at Sunda a 2.5 but rounding up to 3. I had really high hopes for Sunda but it was disappointing for too many reasons, especially at the price point, and this was for a birthday celebration. From the beginning it seemed that the servers were not clear on which tables they were waiting on so we got welcomed / asked if we had been there before by two different people. The decor was nice, but I was really surprised that they were using disposable wooden chopsticks at the table; really strange decision for a fine dining restaurant. We ordered two cocktails - I got a version of whiskey sour with sinigang but hardly tasted any sinigang, definitely had to imagine it. We ordered the Japanese tofu salad, bulgogi roti tacos, island roll, and the sea bass. We liked the Japanese tofu salad, thought the bulgogi roti tacos were amazing, but the island roll and the sea bass were incredibly disappointing. The island roll's rice was not very good sushi rice and it was held together with a dry, tasteless rice paper. The fish was good, but you also need to have good rice to make it truly a good roll. The tom yum sea bass was so poorly executed at $58. It was tasteless and the rice that came with it was a bit hard despite being warm. They didn't give us a knife to cut through the bok choy which, again, at this price point the restaurant team should be more attentive or give instructions on what serving utensils are necessary for each dish. I don't recommend coming here, there are plenty of better restaurants in River North that have consistently good, delicious food. Save your money! read more

Sunda had been on my list of spots to visit for a while, so I was so excited to treat my dad to dinner here for his birthday last month! I love the atmosphere, it's really, really beautiful inside. I (of course) had looked at lots of photos of the food and ambiance online, but I was a little thrown off with how loud it was (and not because it was super busy, we came earlier in the evening) but because the music is so dang loud! It felt like a nightclub in there and I KNOW I sound like a curmudgeon, but it genuinely threw me because it seems very serene from the photos but don't be fooled, it's thumpingggg. Sunda New Asian has both River North & West Loop locations. The River North spot is very large with a full sushi bar, many tables, private dining areas, and a large bar near the entry. I loved the contemporary design and architectural features they had in the space. Their dining style is for plates to come out as they're ready and to ideally share amongst the table. The menu pricing can be a bit of a premium but sharing helps give you a variety of bites for the right price. To start, my group got a round of drinks: Billy's Superfresh Saketini, Lychee Simoy, Peared Sake, and Ginger Cosmo. My favorites were the Lychee Simoy which was fruity and sweet as well as the Billy's Superfresh Saketini which was spirit forward with a fresh kick of cucumber. For food, we got a variety of dishes to share and we didn't have a bad bite in the group. The Miso Cauliflower was amazing and a great starter. The Smokeshow Rolls came with a fun presentation. The Sweet Potato Caterpillar was what I was most excited for and probably was the least impressive dish of them all. The Chap Chae and Steamed Buns were amazing! The Buns comes as four but one can choose two flavors. We chose Pork Belly and Eggplant. I did not try the Waygu Crispy Rice bites but it was also a table favorite. Overall, this was a great dinner spot to enjoy good company. The food and drinks were both tasty. Service was good but a bit much with clearing plates immediately and persistence in asking if we were finished with our food. Either way, I thoroughly enjoyed Sunda! So I booked a table for two for my husband's birthday as this was on our list for the longest time!! Greeted by the cozy interiors and very cheerful staff, all wishing the hubby a happy birthday. They seated us at the special occasion seating and i graciously let the hubby take the plush seat! For drinks i got the Emerald, 100% alcohol free, 100% delicious. Perfect drink when you choose a sober night. The other drink of choice was the lychee simoy, another solid choice. And then we got started with crispy brussel sprouts and the oxtail potstickers. The perfect balance of crispy veggies in a flavourful soy base and a hearty potstickers packed with stuffing. The mains really blew our minds. The wagyu crispy rice was a stuff of dreams!! This is a beautiful restaurant that serves some great-looking sushi as well as other Asian fusion-style dishes. Here's what I tried: Emerald - A pandan milk drink. Personally, it was just okay; the guava purée made it a bit too sweet, though the pandan flavor was nice. (3.5/5) Strawberry Fields - This was a tasty alcoholic drink. A bit small, but flavor-wise everything blended really well. (4.5/5) Pancit Canton - The pork belly was delicious, served over noodles with an instant noodle-like texture. There was a plentiful amount of shrimp and overall good flavors. The noodles were a bit soggy, though I believe they were meant to be that way. Still enjoyable. (4/5) Crazy Rice - A beautifully presented dish. The flavors were good, but be warned: the ghost pepper sambal is pretty spicy (my wife found it too spicy). For me, it was mild, and the shrimp pieces were very good. (4/5) Overall, the food is expensive and clearly meant to be shared with a group. Loved being able to try a bunch of different menu items family-style. Came for a friend's birthday dinner. We had a reservation and were seated immediately. Our server explained to us that the menu is meant to be eaten family style and recommended around 10 dishes for our party of 9. We decided to take matters into our own hands and order individually - definitely way too much food. We probably could've shared about 5 dishes or so and been satisfied as the portions are quite big - especially the meat entrees. The entrees were decent. I ordered the scallops which were too salty. I also tried some of my friends' dishes and felt that they were also either too salty or too sweet. The two standouts to me were the brussel sprouts which were a huge portion size and great for sharing and my friend's pear cocktail (I forgot the exact name) but it basically tasted like watered down juice (in a good way). Though the menu was pre set the chef made some lovely vegetarian exceptions for me that were absolutely top notch My favorite picks were the avocado and sweet potato sushi rols, and the cauliflower saute that I requested that they serve with a bun. They also had good vegetarian fried rice and a decent vegetable saute in a decadent curry sauce. Wow! We loved Sunday! We came here accidentally Friday evening, we were planning to go to Planta down the street but we didn't make a reservation and they were full. So we looked up other restaurants nearby with decent vegan options and walked over here. We were seated in the "lounge" which ended up being ideal. It was a pretty and quiet section. We shared all of the dishes. All vegan Crispy brussel sprouts (without the meat): These were amazing. We would have ordered a 2nd dish at the end if we had more time. Grilled vegetables: Amazing. The curry sauce was delicious. This came with rice. Chop Chae: Very good. I didn't expect to like this, but I did. Sweet potato caterpillar roll: fine. This is a good vegan sushi roll. Kushi eggplant: I didn't like this, but everyone else did. The restaurant was lovely, the service and staff were great, and the food was incredible. Sunda is one of my friend's favorite restaurants so I went in with high expectations. We had a reservation for a Saturday night so it was bustling - unfortunately it was way too loud for my liking to have to shout over the music. But otherwise, ambiance was fun and service was pretty good. We started with a few drinks - I tried the "snow maiden" sake which was very unique and enjoyable. For food, it's recommended to share a bunch of different dishes so we split the pork belly buns (10/10), red dragon sushi (8/10), a few different nigiris (9/10), and shrimp pad Thai (5/10). Most of the food was excellent, albeit a little pricey, you can tell the quality is there. The second drink I tried was the Silk Road cocktail but I'd skip next time - a little too botanical for me. And to top off the night, the coconut cheesecake was absolutely delicious - so leave room for this dessert! For 3 people splitting multiple dishes, 2 rounds of drinks, and dessert, our bill was well over $300. When you make a reservation, they warn each table has a 90 minute limit and while we stayed closer to 2 hours, right after the last bite our server tried to politely nudge us out the door. Great happy hour plates and hand rolls for $6 each! A Filipino-fusion sushi restaurant! We legit tried the entire menu: Fav was def adobo pork belly bites which came with the crispiest skin and the juiciest of bites with the perf fat to meat ratio. The soy glaze was genuine perfection. Seoul wings had a nice flavor, but could use a bit more crispiness tho it was so juicy inside. Nori fries had a nice seaweed seasoning and parm. Shishito peppers were sweet with a slightly mild spice, but loved how they roasted and tossed it with soy. My friend ate a spicy bit and tweaked out, but I felt there was no spice! I was specifically looking for Filipino food in Chicago and Kasama was not open at the times I could visit since I'm here for a conference. I was able to find Sunda and I could not be more pleased. While emphasis is broadly South East Asian, there were a fair amount of Filipino dishes. It is API month and the specials I tried were the lobster lumpia and short rib Kare Kare. Honestly I wanted to try the Chicken Inasal and garlic noodles, because I thought the lobster would be lost in the lumpia and many modern Filipino restaurants do Kare Kare - however my waiter Moises was knowledgeable and told me he waits to see these dishes come up because they only show up once a year if that. I took his word for it and was glad I did! The lumpia did in fact taste like lobster - juicy and sweet savory! The chili sauce it was served with even tasted like it had a butter emulsion. I licked the ramekin clean when no one was looking. Then came the Kare Kare. Kare Kare is a party dish and honestly the best ones usually come from family parties because they punch up the flavor with stuff like bagoong (shrimp paste) that an American palate might be intimidated by. Nope. This was funk forward and perfectly done. The peanut taste came right through as well. The mint dill garnish was a good touch to break up the richness - I'm stealing that trick. I could also tell this was not Mamasita's spice packet. A lot of us can't make the sauce from scratch - it's like mole - many can tell a good one but few can actually make it. I topped it off with a siningang sour (a whiskey sour with tamarind) but low key, I wanted bitter sour and salty punched up a bit for a surprise. Super delicious, but the name is more shocking than the taste. The most unique drink I've had is a Bittermelon martini from Abaca - now that was surprising in a good way - so siningang sour takes number two. The ambience was of course awesome and I enjoyed seeing people of all cultures welcomes and eating there. Will 100% come back when I return to Chicago. Thanks Sunda! read more

This place was really good! The food came out quick, our server was attentive and we really enjoyed the meal. The brussel sprout salad was for sure my favorite dish. We got a sushi roll with the soft shell crab that was awesome, our other roll was a little bland but I can't remember what it was. The aesthetic was really nice, but the place was super loud and hard to hear each other despite yelling. Probably because it's a bigger place that's packed with tables.
