I ordered take out from Mishkenut about a month ago and forgot to review! The woman I spoke to on the phone was so nice and seemed very knowledgeable. We got the apple cranberry salad which was awesome and basically the salad I always order whenever I'm out. It was huge too (that's a trend! Everything was!)my mother and law and I got the pollo limon and it was amazing. It came with 4!! Chicken breasts! So we could have shared for sure. My husband and father in law got the chicken and steak kebobs. Also really good and a ton of food. The hummus was to die for. I could eat a gallon of it! Seriously a gem in Northwest Indiana! The hummus, the chicken shawarma and the Turkish coffee are what keeps me coming back. The food overall is great! I personally recommend the Mish Special if it's your first time dining here. The Mish Special says it's good for two but myself and two others tried it and we were more than full. The hummus is honestly the best hummus I've ever had! Oh and if you're a coffee lover, the Turkish coffee is a must! It has a dark brew with floral and fruity hints. Are you people crazy giving this place 4 1/2 out of 5 stars?! This place was just brutal. I went here because there aren't very many credible mom&pop restaurants around town, but I saw this place on yelp it had good reviews so I was excited to give it a try. Walking in you can tell this place needs a decorating makeover but I'm not Martha Stewart so whatever. Looking around the room there are about 15 people in the dining room, several random people picking up their take out, and yet for some reason, there are only 3 people working the entire restaurant. There are clearly no specific roles for them - they all just do every job. The waitress is also the hostess, cashier, and cook. How am I supposed to feel about that? The same person wiping down the tables and taking payment is also handling my food. Oh btw nobody is wearing a hairnet or even a hat. But I'm not the FDA either. Oh yeah- who is doing the dishes? All of this and I haven't even touched on the food yet. My buddy and I ordered falafel for an appetizer and chicken shawarma for meals. First off how did it take 20 minutes for a deep fried appetizer? It was tasteless and gross. Just a big crunchy ball. We waited for another hour after it and never received our meals!! Are you absolutely joking me?! At some point in the waiting for out meals that the question arose if they had not even started to prepare our food. It wouldn't be that surprising considering there was 0 role clarity in the operational model. By the 90 minute mark this train wreck of an experience had to end. We left cash for the appetizer and left. I would like to think that they were upset that we left, but I'm pretty sure they won't even realize that we left. Two lessons here: 1)always trust your instincts. I knew deep down that I should never have even considers it but live and learn. 2)never trust the reviews on websites like yelp. 1% of the time there are positive reviews, 99% of the time it's whiny entitled people complaining about not having their asses kissed. But more importantly, these reviews are 100% garbage. Refer to lesson #1 and you won't find yourself in my unfortunate situation. And finally, if you look at my profile you will find that this is my one and only review. I never ever do this because I understand that once in a while you get a bad experience, but messing with my appetite is messing with my emotions. read more

Really this is a solid 3.5 star place But since it is hard to find enchain places in Indiana had to up the star. The menu is extensive enough that you feel that you must come back and try something else. But not overwhelming. What we had: Chicken kabob wrap Falafa wrap Chicken shawamana Red lentil soup I was quite underwhelmed with the soup -- it was watery and lacked good lentil flavor. I go to this place every now and then. They make some pretty good dishes. I love the hummus. It is fresh and delicious everytime. I've had a few of their pita sandwiches and they are always good. I'm not a huge fan of the interior of the restaurant, but it's not like it offends me or anything--it's just very plain inside. Service is always polite and timely. Mishkenut is by far and away one of my favorite spots back home. Whenever I make a weekend trip to visit family, Mishkenut is always on the list of "foods I can't get in Memphis." Sure, we have Mediterranean food, but none of it holds a candle to this place. Favorite menu items? That's difficult simply because I've never had anything here I didn't like. The hummus is one of my favorites, paired with the falafel and grape leaves. Their bacon wrapped dates are not to be forgotten either. They are made with turkey bacon- which seemed so odd to me at first, but once I tried them it made all the sense in the world. The kabob and falafel wraps are delicious and killer sized portions for the price. If you want something off the dinner menu, go for the stroganoff- indescribably amazing people! Their baklava is the best I've ever had and those handmade chocolates? Yeah, I still crave them on a random Tuesday night all the way out here in Tennessee. Everything here is reasonably priced, which makes it difficult to not order the entire menu. I've noticed in many reviews people knocking the decor here. Yeah, it's in a strip mall and it's pretty vanilla and boring. My husband and I often discussed how we hoped they would drum up enough of a following that they'd be able to move to a bigger free-standing location someday. We made a solid effort to try and get them that business, I think I've told anyone I've met who lives within a 45 mile radius of this place how great it was. Regardless, there's something endearing to me about the ambiance here. It's BYOB and the family that owns and runs the place is incredibly welcoming. Absolutely love this place. Me and my girlfriend make a point to try and make it here at least once a week. The quality of the food is unmatched by anything else around. Everything's made from scratch, and tastes wonderful. The food is great, and great food takes more then a minute to make, come here with that mindset and expect the wait to be well worth it and not the "I need to be in and out in ten minutes" your doing a disservice to yourself if you do that. This one is a small little gem, with the most fantastic people running the place. The items are made from scratch (from the samboosa to the chocolate treats that come with the check). Large portions and great prices. This place is a weekly stop for me. Try the eggplant and falafel sandwich...as a chronic meat eater, it's the one sandwich I could give up meat for. And yes it is fresh, if you sit in the right spot you can watch them cook it. Friday nights are a bit busy so you may not get in right away (the place holds maybe 40 people). Such a pleasant surprise to have such a beautiful, delicious meal in a small town in a strip plaza! The place is clean, family-owned, ABSOLUTELY authentic, and fantastic. Here's the short version of my review: perfectly-prepared grape leaves and hummus, high-quality, juicy meats, tender basmati rice, tangy yogurt sauce, and super fresh salad. Lovely and attentive service. If you are a first-timer to this type of food, get the chicken and beef kabobs with rice, yogurt, and a salad. Put a bit of each on the fork, and enjoy the perfect flavor combination! :) And now the long version: I am one of those annoying "foodie" types, of Middle Eastern descent, and have been fortunate enough to try lots of places around the world, just to give proper context to this review. (I live by reviews when traveling - when someone gives a 4+ star place a random, super negative review about "authenticity", I hope you take it with a grain of salt, and check out their other reviews. There's no pleasing some people) I started with stuffed grape leaves, which were perfectly, very subtly seasoned, having been braised in a delicious sauce, and freshly served WARM with some of the tasty juices on the plate (NOT soggy, but were the perfect texture - soft but firmly held together). They were CLEARLY hand-rolled and made from scratch. They went perfectly with the cool, crisp cucumber mint yogurt and tomato-cucumber salad. I then got the combo platter with marinated chicken breast kabob, chicken shawarma, beef (steak-type kabob), and Kafta (ground beef & lamb kabob "patty"). As I mentioned above, the meat was perfectly prepared with the right nuance of flavor. It came with a side of saffron basmati rice (soft textured and fluffy in the best way), an amazing hummus, and fresh falafel (I thought the falafel was a bit over-seasoned for my personal preference, but it was prepared well). The best part of this dining experience was supporting a local, family-owned business. The restaurant is "no-frills" in a charming and earnest way, and is certainly a hidden gem for cleanliness and food quality. This is big-city level of food tucked away in a small town. Foodie yelpers need to be sure to visit and celebrate places like these versus national chain restaurants, so that they're here for many more years to come, and inspire others to follow suit. Went looking for some tasty, healthy food and so pleased we found Mishkenut Mediterranean. Three of us shared a single Apple Walnut Salad (very large portion) and some hummus for starters. For the main course we all ended up getting the chicken kabob with some veggies and rice. Everything was nicely prepared and rich in flavor. As a nice little bonus the owner had a little dark chocolate treat for each of us to provide the perfect topping to a great meal. Ok I guess I'll be the first to say it... We tried this place after watching all of the Avengers go out for shawarma... You know that scene, after the credits when they're all sprawled out with full bellies after listening to Tony Stark and going out for it after their big fight scene... yeah, we kinda mimicked that part... the absolutely stuffed part not the running around throwing punches part... We had the owners son as our waiter, who I was surprised told us he used to work at a "commercial" Italian joint in the next town over before coming to work for his dad, and on Friday he cooks to give his dad a day off! How cool is that? Never having any of the food before I asked his honest opinion about the dishes I was considering (as my fiance already had made up his mind - he was having shawarma!) He was not shy on his opinion and I ended up going with the Chicken Kabobs and LOVING THEM! My guy also loved the shawarma! Plus they give you these cool little chocolate nut dessert cups with your check. As we were eating I noticed that every table that got up to leave told him that they would definately be back! Had the most amazing dinner!! The apple, pecan and feta salad is so fresh and good. The dressing is so fresh and authentic! My husband had the mushroom filet. He said it was incredible! I had the veggie plate. Which is amazing rice topped with tons of broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, carrots and feta cheese on top. Wow it's soooo good. I added some shrimp to the order. Went here once and wished I had tried this place much earlier while working in the area. I split an order of hummus, which came with toasted, soft pita bread. I ordered the eggplant and falafel sandwich, and it was absolutely delicious and extremely filling. The falafel was cooked perfectly (some restaurants make them too oily or use an excessive amount of breading) and the roasted eggplant had a hint of sweetness. The service was superb, food was cheap, and it was perfect for a casual, work lunch. What more could you need? I look forward to returning the next time I'm in town! read more

One of my favorite things in the entire world are surprises. When I saw this restaurant I was so excited to eat authentic middle eastern food with a dash of eastern european flavor. The surprise? It went BEYOND expectations. My sister and I shared a chicken and steak kabob entree with a bunch of little appetizers and a piece of baklava for dessert. The entree: totally, 100 percent amazing. The meat was cooked to perfection, seasoned to perfection and sizzled, literally sizzled, when they brought it to me. The rice, fabulous and grilled veggies, to die. It was one of the best plates of food I've have in a WHILE. The ambiance of this restaurant is also so entirely awesome. The family who owns it are all about making their customers happy. The girl who served us (Hal, I believe) was super cute and made us feel like we had known her for ages. I know many people wouldn't think of Munster, IN as their to-go spot for food. First time eating here - absolutely delicious!! Great value also. Prices are very reasonable. The chicken shawerma was amazing. My friend always orders the kufta kabob sandwich with hummus and he loves it. We also got the baklava and it was incredible!! I have had a lot of baklava and this one was amazing - do not miss out on this! Very friendly staff and great service as well. Aw yeahh.. found some good food in an area I'm unfamiliar with. Score! There was one lady working when we visited and she did everything, yet nothing suffered. She kept everything together, all tables were taken care of and she did so with a cheerful attitude. She was awesome! Food wise we had a great sampler of many items, hummus, falafel, mushrooms in cream sauce and spinach pies. For our entrees we had rice and mixed meats; lamb and chicken shish kabob, chicken shawarma and lamb kofta. Though it's hard to pick any, my favorites were the spinach pies (fresh, tangy, pillowy and delicious) and the mushrooms in cream sauce. These had a light spice to them which balanced out the heavier cream. Our friend had never had falafel before and he loved these; crispy and fluffy..they were very good! I loved how all of the meats were cooked perfectly, all of them stayed juicy and nothing was overcooked, dry, or rubbery. I point this out because that often happens especially with kofta and chicken. Between service and food our dinner was flawless. read more

Stuck in the middle of store fronts on Ridge Rd in Munster Indiana is hardly an ideal location, but for those in the know it's a place that offers quality, authentic food at relatively inexpensive prices. Some may balk at a few of the higher priced items (I'll admit I probably won't be ordering their filet mignon anytime soon.) but overall this place is easy on the pocketbook. The soups and appetizers are really great, and the eggplant pita was especially tasty. Their falafel is damn good too. Family run, the personal touch to their service really makes the experience well worth it. For the location, it's really a find. I don't know how I missed this place. One day during lunch, I was craving hummus. I checked Yelp for the closest hummus infusion, figuring that it would be far away. I was so happy that this place was so close! A co-worker and I ate here - and we have since been back several times. We have had almost all of the menu. The daughter and son (I assume) that work during the day are so wonderfully nice. The food? Fantastic. We have had many schwarmas, falafel, lentil soups, prune rolls (with BACON, people! you should try this!), grape rolls, baba ghanouj, kebabs, rice, salads, oh so much good food! I love to mix everything together in a pita when I eat a combination of Mediterranean food, and if everything is great, I go into a total Zen state of mind. This was the case with Mishkenut. The hummus was some of the best I ever had. They soak the beans the day before, and it was creamy and flavorful. The meats had great flavor as well. The food here was amazing! They were so helpful in making good recommendations and the service here was incredible.
