I recently found out that at least three of my friends get their hair cut at Miss Laura's. These three all have totally different types of hair, and their hair always looks good, even on what they consider to be bad hair days! So finally I surveyed all of them. Sure enough, Miss Laura's. So I went there without hesitation. Adorable little salon near Pondside JP on the 39 bus. Great deal ($30 for cut and blow-dry!), and friendly, creative staff who were able to quickly execute what I was looking for on the first go-round! That is pretty rare. I have another place I love in town, but I don't go there as much anymore, because for the staff, price and location, Miss Laura's can't be beat. read more

I've been coming to Miss Laura's since shortly after moving to Jamaica Plain last summer and cannot imagine going anywhere else. The staff is incredibly skilled and totally down to earth. The environment is funky and wonderful - antique chairs and vanities, vintage jewelry in the window, and a steady parade of customers from punky to matronly. I love talking to Miss Laura and the other stylists about parenting, art, life, local farming, etc. And the prices are almost as vintage as the jewelry. read more

I have done whole-head color, have gone frugal lately so just doing haircuts. Laura thoughtfully suggested which brands of store-bought color I could use if I want to continue it at home. I'm just sticking to what I have. Anyway, I have curly, dry, flyaway hair that looks horrible when it's overgrown. Every time I see Laura, I come out floating on air (hair?)--I look great, 5 pounds lighter, more color in my face, more sculpted-looking neck. I can maintain the look at home because she doesn't use too much product or overly-fancy styling at the end. Just some argan oil. 4. I have been coming here for over a year. Emily is fantastic and does a good job. I am an older woman but still like my hair to be long and I have had had my fill of "scissor happy" hairdressers. Emily cuts off just enough to get rid of the split ends and give my hair better shape. Her color comes out perfect and she is a real pleasure to talk too. I am planning to see her this week before I go on vacation and know I will not need to worry about my hair. The prices here are also very reasonable. read more

There's really nothing bad to be said about this place. Everyone there is very relaxed- I've been several times, but my first time there, I felt like I was hanging out with old friends. That said, they are very busy these days and I've definitely felt the difference. My haircut (which has taken 45min to an hour at other places) was only about 20 minutes and with a quick blow dry, I was out in 35. Nothing fancy, but for $30, I was very pleased. I do go elsewhere for my cuts and blow-outs, but Miss Laura's is perfect for the in-between trims. I can't really comment on coloring- never had it done. read more

I've been bouncing around JP salons and beyond trying to find a decent haircut after my favorite hairdresser disappeared 8 years ago. Last month I tried Desiree at Station 8 and left with the worst haircut I've had in YEARS. I really tried to make the best of it, but I spent 4 weeks driving my husband nuts complaining. I noticed on Yelp that the Laura behind Miss Laura's was back and thought to myself "There is ONE hairdresser in JP I haven't tried yet..." Oh my god, am I glad I tried Laura! She made lemonade from rotten lemons, despite the fact that I forbid her from cutting the front half of my hair. My hair looks so good now that friends have been gasping when they see me, no joke. This haircut even makes my nasty dye job from Station 8 look good and I was just about to resort to dumping a box of Clairol on it myself. I am so relieved and grateful. Dominique is amazing. AMAZING! She gets my hair just perfect, she's a genius. I get my hair died red and cut short, which at other places has been a problem - it could fade within a week :( - but at Miss Laura's, I've had great success. The first two haircuts at had at Miss Laura's were great. But the last time, I felt like Katie was so rushed that she really didn't take the time to get it right. I think that they pack too many haircuts into one day and often end up late and rushed by the end. I have gotten several great haircuts at a great price, but I'm not willing to feel rushed anymore, so I've stopped going. read more

miss laura's is where hipsters can wait with grannies for their haircut. the motley crew of customers plus 1950's kitsch decor is part of the charm of this place... $30 for a cut is the other. take into account that laura focuses on vintage hairstyles and i'm effing sold. i've seen both dominique and laura- laura is the one who i cling to. i love her laissez faire/montessori vibe. i also love how laid back the atmosphere of the salon is. they don't care if you see other stylists (!!!). they want to save you money ($40 for all over color, WHAT?!). they want to do what's best for your hair. they are absolutely down to earth and friendly. as with most beautiful things, there are downsides. i've come by several times during business hours and they are closed without explanation. i've tried to call and no one answers plus their machine is full. i've waited up to an hour for my scheduled appointment on a saturday..... but.... the good definitely trumps the bad. * * bring cash to tip with! * * read more

On the urging of a friend, I decided to try Miss Laura's. I called and got an appointment with Dominique, who is talkative and was very intuitive about my hair. For less than $30 I got exactly what I wanted - a cut that was just enough to make my newly long hair look a little more stylish. The decor incorporates beauty salon memorabilia, appropriately enough, as the space was once a salon called Cla-Mar Beauty Culture (at least as far back as 1976, according to photo evidence I found on the Web). I LOVE Miss Laura's. I have only had my hair cut here once, by Katie. My partner-in-crime Mike has also, at my recommendation, had his hair cut by Katie. Both cuts were great and grow out well, which is excellent because we both rarely get our hair cut. I went to Miss Laura's based on other Yelp reviews and because it is about ten walking minutes away from my apartment. Based on the other reviews, I knew what to expect. The decor is kitschy-fantastic and a little dingy. It's very casual and not at all pretentious. Katie was uberfriendly and chatty without being too chatty. I could still relax and enjoy the bliss of getting my hair done. Katie seems to really know hair and talked to me about my hair type and what kind of cut would work for me, since I want to be able to both leave my hair in its natural wavy state and occasionally blow dry it. I ended up with a great cut that cost me only twenty-seven dollars, plus tip. I could not believe it. I love Miss Laura's. P.S. They do not take credit cards, so bring cash!!! read more

I despise getting my haircut. Not because I'm super picky about my hair or have hair that's impossible to work with, but because my experience with salons is either paying $40 to a snotty girl to trim a half inch off (even if I ask for more) or having the stylist insist up and down they know EXACTLY what you mean by "faux hawk" and then give you a fade (lesson learned: Supercuts is good if you want your split ends taken off. Anything more and you're asking for trouble. End result: I had to shave my head.) So you can understand why I was nervous to go to Miss Laura's, especially since it sits in the heart of the hipsterdom that is Jamaica Plain. But it's starting to get warm out and I kindof missed having a neck, so I scrounged up some photos and made a list of what I wanted and didn't want and hopped the bus. Got there a little early, but was easily amused by the kitschy gifts in the front of the salon, and seriously debated buying a spinal cord keychain before I was called back to the chair. I explained what I wanted, showed the pictures, and my stylist (Katie) seemed to understand perfectly. She got underway, we chatted (which is usually my least favorite thing about getting my haircut, the awkward banter, but was OK here). About half an hour later, I had a new style. I'd give it 5 stars but it *was* a little shorter than I asked for. It still looks amazing, and I love it, but I did specifically ask to keep the length in the front. I think it was a concession to me dragging my feet about getting it cut though: This way, I can leave it for a long time before it really needs to be trimmed. Other things to note: They do, in fact, take credit cards for the actual service, but tips are cash-only. My cut was $30 (and well worth it). They're super friendly and know what they're doing. Everything you read about Miss Laura's is true - it's a great place to get your hair cut. As the other reviewers said, the place is old-school - it's actually the oldest working salon in Massachusetts. It opened in 1930(may be off a few years). The reason I know this? The hairdresser, Dominique, was SO easy to talk to and can hold an interesting, relaxed conversation with her customers (even first-timers, like me). I loved the decor. Because it was my first cut, I went with a conservative cut, similar to the one I had going in. She did a great job and we discussed options for the next cut. This is a completely no-frills place - she asked if I wanted a shampoo, then shampooed me (no shampooer, towel girl/boy, and tea/coffee/wine server/receptionist here), and gave me a great cut. I'm definitely going back. And the price!! Finally, an inexpensive haircut from an experienced, awesome stylist. Never thought I'd find it in the Boston area. I've been to many Newbury St. salons as well as the off-the-beaten path "trendy" salons from Southie to Somerville and I'm going back to Miss Laura's. Great find. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed yet. So this is my story: i went there when i first moved to boston in August. I went there solely because of yelp reviews. I took a picture to Dominique, who proceeded to cut my hair exactly like the picture..she had me sold...but not broke..it was only 30 bucks! I was back in November, when I proceeded to go from a long style to a -- CHIN length cut. It looked EXACTLY like the picture. I haven't had hair that short since kindergarten. This is not a move I would trust to anyone. It's been over 3 weeks since then and not a single day goes by where i don't get a complement on my hair. I'm not joking. I've probably been asked, "who do you go to?" at least 5 times. in short. i trust these women. They don't charge much, but they are damn good at what they do. read more

I've been to Miss Laura's 3 or 4 times now, all with Dominique. Always positive experiences, and the time before last she cut my bangs so well that I was actually able to grow them out without any major tweaking. Amazing. But what inspired me to write this was yesterday's visit. My hair has been thinning for a few months now thanks to some health issues, and I've gotten really self-conscious about it - I'm only in my 30s! I moved to LA in September but was back visiting Boston and decided to go somewhere I was comfortable to see what we could do to disguise what was happening. Dominique was incredibly sweet about it and talked to me about the best options for making my hair look fuller, which ended up meaning a blunter cut and going back to bangs. I had my hair cut by Emily yesterday afternoon and I love everything about it! Perfect length and shape without having to give too much instruction before hand. Since it was my first time there I was not aware you could not tip on the card and had to leave without tipping. I already had fairly short hair that had grown out badly and I was looking to go a little shorter. Previous stylists had told me that the hair on the back of my head grows too oddly to go too short. Laura saw my previous negative review and reached out to do whatever she could to make things right, gratis. She's a friendly and sympathetic person, and also an experienced and skillful stylist. I got another haircut with her: she spent a lot of time cutting my hair. I give her a lot of credit and like my haircut. Very disappointed. Dominique spent 10 mintues cutting my long hair, which needed some attention. I didn't get a blow dry, and after it dried a little later, I discovered how uneven my hair was. So I went back to get it fixed, and got a few more snips. I'm still not satisfied but don't want to fight and obviously won't get good results from this hairdresser. I have been here quite a few times now and I consider it a great find! Dominique always does a great job and "gets" me even though I usually come in wanting a change but not having any direction for her. She also remembers a lot about me and the conversations we have, which is a great surprise each time I return. I dye my own hair and she always compliments me without trying to convince me to do it at Miss Laura's which makes me feel that she's not trying to squeeze money out of me...something I definitely appreciate! Dominique knows that I don't spend much time on my hair so she always shows me cheap and easy tricks that even I can do. I visited Miss Laura's because I wanted a pixie cut and I was looking for someone not afraid of cutting my hair so short. A friend recommend Miss Laura's for the task and Laura indeed was the answer! She listened to what I wanted and talked it through with me. We then spent an hour talking while she cut my hair. She took her time getting the haircut just right.
