Mission Baja Tacos is outstanding and easily the best taco shop we've found in Mission Beach. It's a well-run family business where you can immediately see and taste the difference that comes from making everything fresh. The tortillas are homemade right in front of you, the authentic salsas are homemade, even the chips for the chips and salsa are made in house, and everything is cooked fresh to order. We tried several different tacos and every one was delicious. The rice and beans were excellent, and the California burrito was outstanding. It's easy to see why Mission Baja Tacos has some of the highest ratings of any taco shop in Mission Beach.We tried other places in the area, and for us, there wasn't even a close second. What a great find! I was biking around the area and decided to stop off for some tacos. I don't think this place has as much hype as some of the famous spots in San Diego, but sometimes it's nice to try a random place. Most people seemed to be taking their tacos to go, so the service was pretty fast. I ordered 3 tacos and brought them over to the nearby beach - nothing better than tacos and a view! 3.5 but I rounded down, if mission Baja existed outside of SoCal then yes a 5/5 but surrounded by the plethora of taco spots I was left wanting more. More salsa combos, more variety in their guacamole (ordered chips and guacamole) like add some salt or spices or even tomatoes. The inside was festive and colorful, the server was fine. The fish is swai and that is considered a poor quality fish which is why I rounded down. You can look it up but it's nice to ask usually what fish people are using. I get that it's cheaper type of fish but they charge $5.50 for the grilled fish taco. Anyways I was surprised by the higher reviews so wanted to try it. The shrimp taco had too much batter on it but once I took that off the taco did taste well. Not sure if I'll return. read more

We were visiting Mission Beach over the weekend and my daughter wanted street tacos so a quick Yelp review brought us to Mission Baja Tacos. When we walked in the cashier was pressing homemade tortillas which I took as a great sign. I ordered two grilled fish tacos and my daughter ordered two carne asada tacos. The tacos came out in about 15 mins, and were full of meat and fish. (Unfortunately I found out after that the homemade tortillas they make are used for every taco except for fish and shrimp, so I did not get to taste the homemade tortillas.) But they looked great and my daughter said they were good. The fish taco had large strips of grilled white fish, cabbage and a delicious white sauce. I added lime and red salsa from the salsa bar. In hind sight I wish I had ordered the fried fish, as the grilled fish was (healthier) but pretty flavorless. The carne asada tacos had lots of meat, guacamole, onions and cilantro and a nice flavor. There is ample indoor seating but we sat outside as it was kind of warm inside (ie cooler outside). The staff were nice and the menu is big and looks pretty authentic. I'd definitely come back but next time would probably try a burrito (my usual go to). Also I wish they had fountain drinks as I had to drink a Diet Coke from a can. But...overall a cute and unassuming spot for Mexican food in the heart of Mission Beach. read more

Delicious burritos perfectly located right next to mission bay, making it the ideal Friday night dinner stop post walking the bay. The service was pretty quick and I loved all the self serve toppings / sides / salsas. I thought the price was pretty reasonable for such good sized burritos!! read more

We found this place over in Mission Bay! It was really good. My fish taco was the bomb.com and my roll tacos were not missing anything... Anything! They were so crunchy and so good and man I miss San Diego. We live in Arizona and we just don't get this kind of flavor. OK. Makes my heart sad. Anyway there are a couple of places in Surprise, Arizona and Phoenix that come close like tacos Chilango, taco Boys, Oscars! They don't disappoint. However, when I go back home to San Diego, I am just so giddy and happy to be around the best Mexican food OK. The service was great. It was quick and fast and we got our food pretty quick. It's kind of small in size so it's not a lot of seating. However they had space for our family of seven and we all were able to come in from the cold weather and get some great food and enjoy our time. I would definitely go back. read more

I stopped by Mission Baja Tacos for lunch in mid-June 2026 while on a walk with a colleague. This is a cute and lively restaurant with tasty tacos (appears to be family-owned). It has several round tables and two communal, long tables. I ordered the carnitas taco and fried fish taco (both were delicious and very good) and enjoyed a sampler of fresh salsas which you serve yourself (the red spicy was my favorite). They have a combination special of any 2 tacos, rice, and refried beans for $12.95. The service was friendly, but expect a short wait (5-10 minutes) for your tacos to be ready if it's crowded. The only downside was the restaurant does not offer free tap water. You must pay for bottled water (however, a free cup with ice is provided upon request). read more

Mission Baja Tacos did not miss. The carne asada taco stole the show. It was packed with flavor and good enough to eat naked. I added a little red salsa anyway and instantly regretted not ordering a second one. The carnitas was solid, but I made the mistake of eating it after the asada, which is like following a headliner with an opening act. The birria came in last and was juicy, rich, and absolutely worth the hype. If you're ordering, carne asada and birria are non-negotiable. Food was absolutely delicious! We had a table of 6 and as we were taking our order the lady let us know about the condiment bar and that the dark red sauce was VERY spicy. For me, it tasted like regular hot sauce but the service was good and the food was great. Definitely a great place for families and kids. We came in about 30 minutes before closing, and by the time our food came out, they had already closed--but the woman working there insisted we stay and enjoy our meal. She was incredibly kind and made us feel so welcome, even though we arrived late. The food was AMAZING, the restaurant was still busy during closing hours and I loveddd the cute decor. Delicious. The star is the hand made tortillas. The service was friendly and relatively quick. The seating area is small but colorful. The shrimp was the favorite of my companion. When you recheck the restaurant on Yelp twice since you can't believe how bad your experience is, you know you're in trouble. We tried three different taco options of fish, carnitas and the birreria. The best of them was the carnitas. The meat was seasoned nicely, but it was SO greasy! The tacos were just sitting in a vat of warm grease which was an even worse experience by the super thick taco shell it was wrapped in. Next was the birreria taco, which just tasted like tomato sauce and you couldn't really taste the meat flavor and lastly worst of the worst was the fish taco. This was one of the worst dishes I have ever tried. I actually couldn't even eat it and threw most of it away. The fish is fried, but must have been done incorrectly since it didn't stick to the fish. The fried batter was also soggy and the fish texture itself was puréed. I'm not sure what was worse, the taste or texture. I'm sad to say, but I will not be returning any time soon read more

It's a small space for indoor seating, but for a midweek dinner, there was some seating available. I asked for advice from the person who took our order (owner?) and chose a few tacos to go. The tortillas were being rolled and grilled in front of us and were a thicker corn tortilla with a great texture. I had a carne asada, birria, and a hard-shelled beef. All of them were great. The hard-shelled beef did not have a distinct seasoning and was mild, but the carne asada and birria tacos were amazing! (The hard-shelled was good, too, but would be for the less adventurous.) They have a salsa bar, so you could mix and match what, if any, extra flavors you want to add. On my next trip, this will likely be my first stop for food. :) read more

I stopped in here on a bike ride for a snack thinking that it would be some small single street taco. But it was a hefty size and packed full of goodness. I had a taco al pastor that was delicious. Loaded with guacamole, but what was really good was the tortilla. Fresh house made tortilla but one of the best I've ever had. I'm not even sure how to describe what was different about it. The service was some of the best I've seen, and the food is really good. Some places have one interaction- order the food and maybe exchange a thank you when picking it up. This was the opposite. While we waited for our food (who I am assuming was) one of the owners greeted us and told us our orders were almost ready which made the place feel friendly and involved. Even though we sat outside while we ate, (who I am assuming was the other owner) came to let us know they were closing the kitchen at closing time and not taking more customers but we were more than welcome to come inside.
