Half of our group had never been there and they gave great recommendations! They kept calm and collected, the place was clean and we filled most of the restaurant! We were in the area leaving a movie and decided to make a BBQ stop again a Mission In Petersburg area. The service was fast and the food was good presentation won't win any prizes but I still enjoyed my waitress she was very nice. I had mission a few years ago on midlothian and i was not impressed.. but i decided to try it again today... and my thought of mission has changed. It was absolutely delicious today! Everything was so fresh. There was a young man named Aden that said he was the local ambassador and he knew a lot of random things about the restaurant and the food. He was very sweet! The only reason the got a 4 instead of a 5 is because the cornbread tasted like soap and it was a little dry. Idk what that was about.... But i wasn't a fan... i also wasn't a fan of the baked beans.... It tasted a little like lighter fluid or something.... but the brisket was delicious! And for the Mac n cheese to have breadcrumbs, it was actually pretty soulful tasting and very cheesy... The onions and the bacon in the green beans were very delicious. My wife and I started eating at Mission BBQ when Smokey Bones folded. I am a baby back ribs fanatic. When trying out Mission BBQ we immediately became big fans as the service is excellent, and the food is consistent and the highest quality level. The sauces (Memphis variety in particular) is delicious. Only recommendation here would be to make it slightly thicker, but I will come regardless of whether that happens or not. I love the 10 & 5 bone rack/fries and my wife loves the pulled pork, beans and fries (which can be ordered extra crispy - yum!!). All menu options are outstanding. The drinks are open refill and the iced tea is excellent. The service continued with a staff checking if you needed anything and cleaning up quickly. All service was with a smile and the attitude of the staff made you feel they genuinely enjoyed their job. It is a great experience, and has become a regular stop for myself and my wife on our frequent eating out schedule. FYI - as a veteran I got a free sandwich during armed forces week. Nice touch Mission BBQ. Never thought I would have been happy to see Smokey Bones close after moving back to Va. from Florida (Sonny's BBQ). Over all the meats were great and perfectly cooked, only thing we wish we had was a sweet bbq sauce but the other options were still good. You will never get bored coming into a mission barbecue because they have so much memorabilia on the walls that I don't think you can see it all in one visit. This is a very patriotic restaurant that gives homage to our service workers of police fire and military. The service is always outstanding. Whenever you go to the register and order your food, they are very accommodating and helpful with your choices. You can't be good southern barbecue and this is one of my favorite places to eat. Stopped by with my little brother since I always hear about mission bbq. The people working were so helpful and friendly. The food is priced pretty reasonably. The portions were generous. The cornbread was moist and tasty. The bbq is pretty good too. The sweet potatoes were good, but we were less then enthused by the super seasonal baked cheesy potatoes. They were so similar to a lot of other stuff available, so they were just okay. I personally like the rustic feel of the place, and I always like to support other vets and veteran owned businesses. I will very likely be back since it is a nice, close, and relatively inexpensive barbecue restaurant. read more

Our first time here and we really liked everything. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The place is clean and airy. We had brisket which I got lean it was hot and large slices and generous portion. We also had ribs which slid right off the bone and again generous portions. The collards baked beans and coleslaw were delicious and large portions too. We are only staying in the area one night but on our return trip we will definitely be back each and every time. read more

What a great experience... Once we parked we noticed this huge black truck outside flanked with the restaurant's name, the parking lot was immaculate and paid respect to the military. The meat is smoked, which means you will have a pink smoke ring when you cut or bite into you meat selection. They smoke the meat at a higher degree and longer than required and as a result it comes out with this beautiful pink ring. The meat is very tender and fully cooked. Just so you are aware going in. We didn't know, so now we alll are educated in smoking The food was delicious; baked beans have a little kick & we loved that. The greens have tomatoes in them, fresh and new. The peach cobble, GET IT!! Minced BBQ sandwich had enough meat on it for 2! The had minced chicken as well, brisket, yesss It is definitely a must visit. You will find so much on the menu to oooooh and awww about. I only had one thing that made me shake my head. For an establishment that caters to the military, No discounts were given to the military. Came to MBBQ for dinner tonight with some friends from out of town. The food was delicious! We were greeted by Aidan who was super friendly and gave our friends the load down on the menu. His schpill on the menu made it so easy to choose what we wanted - pulled chicken, pulled pork, brisket, and meatloaf. All of it was delicious! We all finished our plates and even ordered the dessert, banana pudding. The pudding was delicious and had the perfect sweetness! The staff was friendly and had great customer service skills. I always appreciate when the staff comes up to our table to ask if we need anything or how we are doing and that they did! The establishment, booths and bathrooms were clean! Yes, it's chain barbecue but it's still good. I like the "mission" of Mission BBQ - they fund veterans organizations including the Wounded Warrior program. And on top of that, the barbecue is actually really good. Step up to the counter, order and pay. A few minutes later, your name is called out and hopefully by then you've put your drinks together and found your table. Today's lunch was good. I had a half rack of ribs with cole slaw. They were meaty and cooked perfectly. I tried them with each of their sauces and the Kansas City one was the best. The cole slaw was crispy and not wet. First ever visit on yesterday. Pleasant atmosphere with some cool military memorabilia hanging on the walls. Friendly staff and the food was ready fairly quickly. That was a major plus. I ordered the three meat sampler with fries and coleslaw w/cornbread. If they're consistent with the quality of the food then this will be the place for me when I'm craving smoked food. I chose the fattier piece of brisket, ribs and chicken. Absolutely seasoned well and was tender. I was a tiny bit shocked by the price but then realized I received a nice portion of everything and it was smoked and cooked really well. We ordered the 5 Bone baby back ribs $14 and two of the 2 meat sampler plates $13.19 each (lean brisket & turkey breast; and double their classic sausage) and we upgraded to their "XL combo" which included a drink and 1 side for $5.50 extra and their "XXL combo" which includes a drink and 2 sides for an extra $7.50. I hate to write this review but my food tonight was horrible! I had the pulled pork sandwich. The meat tasted like it was boiled, had absolutely no taste other than tasting boiled and had the nerve to be cold. I saw when they dumped it out of a cup and onto the bun but I was not expecting what I got. I am highly disappointed especially after spending over $10 just for the sandwich. Stellar service and great food! We were in town for a soccer tournament and the hotel staff recommended Mission BBQ for the food and ease of ordering for a large group. We had 30+ guests and called the night before to place an order. Ed was very helpful in making suggestions for the group. We picked up the order and were impressed by the clean inviting atmosphere. I have never had an issue with this establishment until now. To add insult to injury, I just left, Outback Steakhouse where good cuts of beef are rendered inedible due to the cook turning steaks into charred blackened flip-flops. So I come to this establishment and low and behold, the same jacked up food. I can't win for losing. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with fries. F%$# me, I think I would have had better luck with the mangled carcass of some unfortunate creature I saw on the roadway. Pulled pork, I think not, more like pulled tree bark. I was defeated for the night. I went home and made some chitterling and sardine loaf with pork and bean juice, with a side of beet juice to drink. read more
