    shredded pork bbq
    Darroux H.

I stopped by on a late Sunday afternoon, while on my way back up to DC after a trip. I wanted to get something more local, hoping that I could find some good bbq for lunch. Unfortunately, I didn't find it here. I got a large bbq minced sandwich. The size was good, but the sandwich was really salty and the bbq was also salty.. and peppery. I couldn't finish my sandwich. HOWEVER, the hush puppies were soooooo good. They're a little large - like the size and a half of a golf ball. Made fresh and served with butter, I could have eaten a dozen. The service was nice. Still sad about the bbq though

I got a pork salad and it was Big! It was very good lots of pork, my husband got the tacos and said they were good as well, the Chocolate cake was amazing! Their service was exceptional, the lady at the counter was very patient as we looked at the menu, she came to our table a few times to see if we needed refills and to make sure we were happy! Great place to eat you won't regret it!

    The place is adorable!

The parking lot was full. This was a Saturday afternoon so as expected there was a line out the door which seems like the usual. It was late afternoon so we were informed that the beef rib and cheeks were sold out but they had plenty of other meats. Took us about 45 minutes to get through the line but it gave us plenty of time to decide what to get because they had a lot to offer. When we finally got to the front of the line, we were treated to some burnt end samples which melted in our mouths. We ordered 1/3 pound of pulled lamb, 2 sausage links, 1/2 pound of pork ribs, 3/4 of brisket, collard greens, dirty rice, jalapeño mac & cheese, Texas caviar, and 2 cornbreads. Pretty serious deal. Each ordering section was separated by meat and sides. All the employees that helped us were super friendly and helpful with picking stuff out. The food traveled really well and in my opinion, lived up to expectations. The brisket might have been too rich which feels crazy to say but it is some very good brisket. The lamb, sausage, and ribs were all tender in their own right. The dirty rice and mac were solid. We really liked the Texas caviar but the collards were a little too sweet than what I'm used to. Cornbread was really good too. Great BBQ sauce for the brisket as well. Absolutely worth the long wait for lunch in my opinion. As far as Virginia goes, it really is some of the best BBQ. Would love to eat in next time because their dining room/outdoor section looked pretty lively.

I got there at 10:30 and there was about 8 people/group of people in front of me. I wanted to try a little bit of everything so I got a 1/3 pound of brisket, pulled pork, beef cheek and 1 sausage link. I ate all my meat as is and with a little bit of their sauce. Their sauces weren't good. Sausage link: It was a little spicy, not too much but just enough. I got the habanero cheese sausage and the cheese didn't really melt into the meat. I have no idea what type of cheese they used but it had a weird texture. 7/10 Pulled pork: Cooked well but had a vinegar taste. I was a bit confused at first and as I kept eating it got worse. I have never had pulled pork with vinegar in it... 3/10 Brisket: I requested a fatty piece of the brisket. Overall not bad not great, probably the best meat they have. 7/10 Beef cheek: Cooked quite well but EXTREMELY salty. It was almost unbearable. 5/10 The sides were all a zero...don't even waste your time. Was this BBQ awful...no but it was a one and done for me. Not to mention it was quite expensive for what you get. If you are in Richmond, it probably is the best in the area. But certainly not the best in the region. I would recommend 2fifty bbq in DC before ZZQ.

Thanks to them as well for opening up their back room to fit all the girls. Great staff - very friendly. It's a smaller place. But that doesn't detract at all. Now the food. Insanely good. The peanut butter pie and key lime pie were to die for. The Mac and cheese was excellent, as was the cowboy beans and potato salad. If I lived here it would be one of my favorite places to go. As we drove through Scott's Addition, the incredible smell coming from SMOHK caught our attention. We followed the aroma, stopped to try it, and ended up having a fantastic lunch. From the moment we walked in, the service was excellent. The gentleman at the front was extremely friendly and patiently explained all the meats, sauces, and side dishes to us. My mom and I shared a rib platter that came with two sides--we chose the coleslaw and sweet potatoes--and added four extra ribs. My nephew ordered the pulled pork sandwich. The food was excellent. The ribs were tender, flavorful, and delicious, and the sides were great too. My nephew and I spent most of the meal debating whether SMOHK was at the same level as ZZQ or even better. I personally thought it was better, and after I let him try one of my ribs, he was impressed and delighted too! Another big plus was being able to enjoy high-quality barbecue without standing in a huge line. At the end of our meal, the owner came over and talked with us. He was very warm and welcoming and showed us photos of the catering they offer. We were so impressed that we plan to order from SMOHK for our family Thanksgiving gathering. The entire check was about $80 for three people, including three drinks, tax, and tip. Considering the amount of food, the quality, and the excellent service, we felt it was well worth it. Great barbecue, genuinely kind people, and an overall memorable experience. We discovered SMOHK by accident, but we will definitely return!
