Having traveled all over BBQ is not the same everywhere you go. Up north it can be slim pickings for great BBQ. As a fan of Texas Style BBQ, Mission BBQ ranks right up there with my favorite places in the lonestar state. It was a joy to finally find good bbq after moving down here from the Chicago area. The service is good the portions are filling but not wasteful and the food is awesome but beyond this the mission of service to the community, Veterans and First responders is just amazing. Man, Evansville does not know good BBQ. I stopped in for dinner one night and wasn't too impressed. I was so underwhelmed that I honestly wasn't looking forward to my leftovers later in the week. Crazy, right? I wanted to try a bit of everything, so I got ribs (spares), sausage, beans, mac & cheese, some blueberry cobbler, and it all came with cornbread. The best part of my meal was the cornbread. Seriously. That was followed closely by the cobbler, then the sides. The meat was disappointing. The ribs were mush. Like, I like a good, tender rib, but these were falling off the bone in a bad way. No bark, no mouthfeel, no flavor. Putting a good amount of sauce on these was the best way to enjoy them. The sausage was fine. Ok flavor, good texture, and just not bad all around. I got the regular, but would be willing to try the cheddar & jalapeno or whatever the other one they have is (does nobody around here do hot-links?!). I also liked the location. Nice big store with plenty of seating. The staff were also all very nice and helpful. It all made for an ok meal out, but I think I'll give Mission BBQ a pass next time. read more

Very good brisket! The black plate with fried chicken was alright. I didn't like the breading but the meat was good. Potato salad was fine. The green beans were good. Eaten BBQ all over America, and had great service at many of those places. At Mission BBQ I have never felt so welcome as a US Army Veteran. A lot of places claim to be pro veteran just come off as inauthentic, not at Mission. While the food was good, the service and welcoming feeling for me and my family went well above what I have seen at other places. Nice clean place, the service was great but the ribs were the worst I have ever had. Slimiest, greasy, lacking a char layer. The BBQ sauce leaves a lot to be desired. Mission BBQ used to be my favorite BBQ place in Evansville. My last visit on Saturday 9 Feb 2019, was VERY DISAPPOINTING. We stopped in for a late supper to take home after a busy day. I had received a gift from my Brother so this was a special meal. My wife got 1/2 pound of LEAN BRISKET. She was very pleased would give it 4 of 5 as the best BBQ ever. My meal was VERY DIFFERENT! I ordered MOIST BRISKET and SMOKED TURKEY and made it a plus three combo. I asked for Texas and Smoky Mountain sauces. Sides were Green Beans, Mac and Cheese, and Blueberry cobbler. As usual the order was enough for TWO meals. However, the brisket was extremely salty, so were the green beans, totally inedible! The mac and cheese was cold, and had no crispy topping. Also the usual cornbread was replaced with a stale, not toasted, stale slider bun. The Blueberry cobbler was dry and burnt, was like a bad bread pudding with an overcooked berry sauce. If the berries were blueberries the taste was not present. The new staff needs to be trained. The meal was not even close to this chain's standards. The Turkey was good. BUT the to go sauces given to me were rancid for the Smoky and not the Texas at all it was the Tupelo in the wrong container. l sincerely hope these problems will soon be corrected. I will not be a customer of MISSION BBQ until the management is changed and the food is brought back to the National Mission BBQ Standards. read more

The restaurant has a military them for decor. The establishment honors the service of our military personnel. The food was good and service was fast. We had a chopped brisket sandwich served in Memphis Bel sauce. It was delicious. A pulled pork sandwich with Kansas City sauce. It was good! Dad got the sampler plate with 3 meat choices. If you haven't been there before it's like a BBQ Chipolte or Subway where you make your order and pay the cashier then they make it in front of you. For Mission BBQ this means you are assured it's fresh meat and sides not meat that has been sitting in a warmer for 10-20 minutes. Had the Spare Ribs, pulled pork and pulled chicken. The pork and chicken where hot and fresh and worked well with the 6 sauces on the table. Of the sauces I liked the variety, my favorites were the smokey, KC's, Texas, and Memphis sweet. I liked how each gave a different flavor, so you can change it up on different trips and get different flavor out of the same order. I didn't try it, but I saw a Pulled Pork Sandwich served to another customer and the pork was piled on and looked fantastic, I will try that next time! Now to the Ribs. They were extremely tender, fall off the bone, literally. Which some people love and others don't. Normally in competition BBQ this is over cooked. I prefer my ribs to be closer to the competition level as opposed to the 'fall off the bone'. However, this is personal preference. I merely "liked" the rub they had on the Ribs, didn't love it, didn't hate it. I don't normally put sauce on my ribs, but found the Smokey sauce a good complement to the rub and tenderness of the Ribs. Maybe the Baby Backs are different, didn't try those, will try in another trip. In comparison to Bandanas BBQ down the street, I would give Bandanas an edge on Ribs in terms of my preference of tenderness and I enjoy the rub there more. However, the last 2 times I've went to Bandanas the Ribs didn't seem as cooked right or was put in a warmer before served, but when Bandanas serves the Ribs correctly I prefer those. So in conclusion, I would say Mission BBQ is a fantastic new BBQ spot in Evansville and deserves your money. Seems to be an ideal spot for a lunch BBQ sandwich. Preference on Rib style could sway you to Bandanas if you want strictly Ribs, but Mission competes in every way possible which is great for us, the consumers. PS. Amazing customer service. we were visiting Evansville for the GOP convention and stumbled upon this place. There was no line, and when I said we had never been there before, the woman working the counter came around and explained everything to us. She even offered to let us sample something before we ordered. I was extremely pleased with the veteran parking outside and they were very veteran focused. This place has a great atmosphere. The decor is dedicated to our first responders, police, and firefighter, and our military. The food was really great. The brisket and the pulled pork both had great taste, but not overpowering on the smoke. The turkey was moist and tender. And the mac & cheese and the cheesy potatoes are great.
