My in-wall heater had stopped working, and after checking the pilot and circuit breaker I had exhausted my ability to resolve the issue. HVAC companies wouldn't service in-wall heaters, so I thought to try a handyman. I contacted Ted and he responded quickly, asking for photos of the thermocouple--a part inside the heater, which he correctly guessed was the issue. He had me order the part and scheduled a time to fix the heater when the part was due to arrive. When he came, Ted replaced the part and while doing so found a separate problem with the igniter. He explained that the heater would still work, as we could ignite the pilot manually, but would try to clean the part of its corrosion first to mitigate any need for a replacement. That worked! No need to order another part and wait. He explained that he always tries to fix things first--within reason--before replacing them, an approach I greatly appreciate. Not only is Ted very skilled and professional, but he's great for conversation and polite. We don't wear shoes in our house and I didn't even need to ask him to remove his, he already had. We hired Ted to replace an old sink with a new sink. Initially, he was friendly and responsive, which was one reason we ended up choosing Ted. At the first appointment, Ted left to return home to bring equipment. He came back much later, then had a story to tell about his girlfriend and something to do with children. When I went to the bathroom, I noticed solid debris thrown in the toilet. That irritated me as I had to go in and fish them out. He did not finish the job in the time allotted. He added two or three change orders which increased the cost of the repair. He also noted that the quality of our newly purchased sink was subpar, but didn't inform us in the earlier stage when we could have chosen a different brand. We scheduled the 2nd appointment for a Friday at 9:30am. At 9am, he called and said he couldn't make the appointment. Overall, that left us disappointed and we would have gone with another contractor or handyman if we did more research about it. Also, be sure to read the reviews carefully and see if Ted has experience in the areas you need in repair -- I think he is quite a skilled handyman but perhaps not in all areas. read more
