I stopped by yesterday on my trip to Martha's Vineyard and was overall glad we did. The restaurant itself is conveniently located and right on the water which offers stunning views. Our waitress was attentive and friendly, always making sure our waters were full and we could have refills if we wanted. My friends ordered the tacos and I felt "when in Rome" and had the fried seafood plate which had fish, scallops, shrimp, and fries for $35. While I liked the restaurant overall this was not worth $35. My meal had three scallops and 2 of them were smaller and a little mushy. Then were were 4 shrimp that weren't bad. The fish was on the smaller end and tougher than I thought it would be. I understand it's Martha's vineyard and things are more expensive there but this was steep for the quality. My friends liked their tacos as well- they just mentioned that having a third taco instead of just the two would have been nice. I would recommend Sandbar though for anyone who wants a fun environment. I'd even go back- but I'd make sure to try something else. read more

My first time to the island and also here. We stopped by because they could seat 9 guest, our party, and it was immediately. Orders were taken by a friendly guy who had a take for the menu and what was good and was very user friendly. We ordered the drinks and then the food. A look at the menu, I found the prices were on the high side for my taste but we are in a tourist trap and cost are what they are. The atmosphere was beach like and I loved the mix of old beach stuff with a beer bar mash up, The drinks came and for the most part all were good except for me. I ordered a traditional Mojito. Having had plenty of good ones and lot of bad one's this one was on the bad side. Tasted store bought mix and repeat with too much mint. The strong mint flavor is a dead give a way that it was premade mix. Avoid it. You want to pay $17 for a glass of sugar water that has NO ALCOHOL in it. You have been warned. The food, well all were satisfied with it except for me. My niece and her husband enjoyed the lobster roll. It was market price I don't know what that cost but I knew it was out of my price range. My wife had the fish sandwich and she LOVE it. She said that is what a fish sandwich is supposed to be like. My son had the american burger and fries combo. He said it was average at best. That good for him. I had the clam chowder. What a let down. It looked homemade but the broth was watery. Flavor was average better than a can but slightly better. I had the clam chowder at another restaurant in Mystic that was 10/10 this was 4/10. In summary, Three stars could have been better in my book but the others felt it was above average drinks and food. We came here without a reservation and were seated right away. Service was friendly but didn't come by very often so we never got a drink refill and absolutely would've ordered more rounds. The chicken nachos appetizer was pretty decent and I'd say evenly layered with toppings, it was enough for a table of 3 for an appetizer. I shared the steak tips poutine with my sister and it was a fantastic and flavorful entree. We went to the Sand Bar & Grill today. We ordered the "famous" fish tacos, tuna poke, and the wedge salad. The fish tacos were horribly dry, the sauce and fries were good. The tuna in the poke was low quality, the "rice noodles" are like packing peanuts. The wedge salad was good. Our waitress never returned to ask us for drink refills, we were out of water for the entirety of the visit and she only returned when we finished our food. The fish tacos being labeled "famous", what a disappointment! The actual location of the restaurant is obviously great, which is what made us go there - I should have read the reviews before! Highly recommend the fried fish sandwich, which contains the same fish as the fish and chips. Both were excellent choices. The fries were good enough but the fish was great. The fish tacos were just okay, arrived a little cold (and we were a party of only 3). It is outdoor seating so beware on hot days. Next to the harbor as we walked along we spotted this hopping place called the Sand Bar and Grill. It's an outside & Inside bar and restaurant we learned later about the inside as we were outside on the harbor walk. When you walk in the walking and seating area is covered in sand. (Outside only) It's a very nice area except you can't see the harbor really and it is extremely crowded. They make it as comfortable as possible with tables and umbrellas but it a different experience. Not bad, just different sitting and walking in sand. That being said, the service is great, the people are great and the drinks are delicious! We did get an appetizer "loaded tots" very good! If you like bacon, it's in there! It wasn't until we were leaving did we see the inside part. It's very nice and, no sand. So either way you like it, with or without sand I think you will enjoy the experience. We have piña coladas, Bahama mamas, and mudslides. The mudslide was interesting because it was made with peanut butter whiskey. It was my first time having it. It was very good. read more

I stopped by the sandbar restaurant on Oak Bluff, Harbour Tuesday night, August 5 around 6 pm. I sat at the bench table overlooking the walkway around Oak Bluffs Harbour. There was great music playing from next-door, but it was extremely loud and very difficult to talk to anyone even someone next to me. The waitress came immediately and took my order. Mahi tacos and a beer. The tacos and coleslaw came shortly afterwards. There were only two tacos for $22 and coleslaw. I had to ask the waitress to bring me a fork for the coleslaw. The atmosphere, the view of the harbor and the vibe was awesome. The sandbar has an excellent menu, but the service and the food needs a step up. The waitress forgot to bring me my receipt and I had to remind her for it. Bottom line, great view, and atmosphere with a very interesting menu, but portions need to be larger. even for Martha, Virginia. read more

I have been coming here for years for drinks because I love the location and views. The food has always been subpar but now the service and drinks are horrible. We were 6 people and only 2 other parties in the place on a Tuesday. Tons of staff and we were ignored for 20-30 minutes while the waitresses chatted with the bartenders and played on their phones....we then ordered a round of drinks ($15+ each) and they decided to water them all down no booze in them that we could tell at all!!! I have come there enough to know the difference AND the waitress was super rude!! Really hope they get this straight before the summer!! read more

Sand bar and grill is a great lunch spot on a hot day. It is right on the water and there are lots of shaded tables so you won't be sweltering in the heat, but will still get to lookout at the ocean. The menu was pretty big and had something for everyone. Salads, sandwiches, seafood, drinks,etc. The service was also great and people were very friendly. It is more of a touristy spot but not as crowded as some other ones. I really liked the Caesar wrap and my mother who loves lobster rolls said this one is great. It was a little pricey but nothing outrageous for being on MV. read more

Our annual trip to MV wouldn't be complete without stopping at the Sand Bar! The Watermelon Margarita was so refreshing and the Fish Sandwich was so tasty! The fish was cooked perfectly, the roll was fresh and the Tarter Lemon Sauce had just the right tang to it. That being said, we were given a bartender as a waiter who was truly trying his best & was a really nice guy. Food? Mediocre. Nothing out of the ordinary, except that it is overpriced. Yes, I get it, it is the Vineyard after all, but c'm on! When I order "fried calamari", I am expecting a basket full of calamari, not "half calamari, half fried banana peppers"... yes, they throw a bunch of fried peppers in the mix... lame! Then, I am surprised that nobody has figure the outside seating situation out: it is DREADFUL: the chairs are constantly digging in the sand, and it is HOT AF! Again, I get it, it is outside, at the beach, is going to get hot. However, the umbrellas they have set up, don't even cover the whole area of the table, so, regardless, there will most likely be somebody sitting in the sun. On top of that, the umbrellas are set up way too low, and they are made out of a material that gets superheated. Maybe, and this is just a suggestion, get some umbrellas that are made of a more natural fiber that is not going to turn an outdoor patio into a sauna... and set them up a lot higher than they are now, that way the heat won't reach the diners that quick and that strongly. Last tip, skip the LOADED BLODDY MARY, $4 extras for one shrimp, one slice of bacon, and one banana pepper? Not worth it. read more

Food- I got a Chicken Caesar Wrap. The chicken was really dry and some pieces were burnt. On the positive side, the fries were tasty. Service- Service was not so good. We waited about 15 minutes before a waiter came to us to ask for our drinks. Then, later on in the meal, the bus boy came by and took our oyster crackers that haven't even been opened yet. My friends and I (Black) had just purchased drinks, and our buddy (Latino) started a drinking cheer/chant. The brother (named Samuel) of the alleged owner came over and told us to shut up because he "couldn't hear the announcers" during the Celtics game (important to note that the game was impossible to hear already due to bar crowd noise). My other friend (Asian) mentions how ridiculous that is, to which the guy gets defensive. He then calls his brother (named Jordan) over, who claimed to be the owner when he was only the manager. We try talking to him, but Samuel keeps interjecting - he even stated that our Latino friend couldn't afford the drinks there. When I tell Samuel that I am talking to his brother, not him, he calls for Mario (the security guard), who escorts me and my Asian friend out of the bar (the latter of which was required to dump the drink he just purchased). Once outside of the bar, Samuel follows us and demands the security remove me entirely off the premises, to which Mario did not respond since I was already on the street. Other patrons directly acknowledged that Samuel was out of line, but nobody stepped in to do anything. Even the bouncer (who was black) didn't see an issue with us, but he had to do the job he was called to do. We fortunately were able to resume our night at another bar in town, but being so deliberately targeted by the alleged owner's family put a damper on an otherwise quality trip to Martha's Vineyard. Update: a fully expected response from the restaurant, where a black patron attempting to have a conversation is seen as "aggressive" and "argumentative," while completely dismissing the employee's disrespectful, instigative, bad behavior. In typical Boston/MA fashion, the restaurant felt the need to parade their alleged support for BLM when the actions of their employees toward non-white patrons (and the non-white bouncer) reflect conflicting attitudes. I initially gave a 2-star rating, but erasure of our legitimate experience warranted an updated review. read more

I am mixed about the food and service however the location is great as it is right on the harbor where you can watch people, boats and have some drinks and food. The outside area is really cool with sand (hence sand bar) and tables with shade or sun plus two bars and waiters service. Additionally there is inside service but on a sunny spring day no one wants to be inside. Be prepared as the prices are high (on par with most other joints on MV). I went with my husband on a Saturday afternoon for a couple of drinks and lunch. It was early in the season so there were plenty of tables, space at the bars and the rail. We choose the rail as it looked right out over the Harbor where we could watch and interact with other guests sitting there. I had the house margarita and he had Bud lite. I ordered the blackened salmon BLT on sliced sourdough and he ordered 10 chicken wings extra crispy with buffalo sauce and sweet & sour sauce on the side. My salmon sandwich came on a bulky roll instead of sliced sourdough bread and the server didn't even mention that. I thought it was pretty good and enjoyed it without making a fuss. My husband thought the chicken wings were under cooked as the meat near the bone was red so he moved onto another wing which was also under done. He ended up trying five of them before giving up. The server never came back to ask us how our lunch was so we just hung out and enjoyed watching the crowd happy to enjoy the view. read more
