Fabulous bar afternoon on a bit of a dreary day. Our young 24 year old bartender took care of everyone getting out of the drizzle and doing a little day drinking. The Firebird cocktail I ordered delighted the entire crowd, since it comes out in a Polynesian head and is aflame. Frankly, the presentation of the food was also spectacular, especially the swordfish club sandwich. I loved the oysters with kimchi paste (a new condiment for me and so good.) The pork belly. The lobster on little tacos. (We were there for 3 hours since the weather was wet and we were talking up our own storm.) My friend knows many good establishments on MV and 9 Craft certainly is. It's been a while since I wrote a food review; I just haven't had the time lately. But after our experience last night, I reconsidered. So we went to 9 Craft Kitchen for what we thought would be a higher-tier food experience for my wife's birthday. We do this almost every year we are here in MV. I originally booked at Atria (Edgertown) but canceled and booked here because we did Atria the last time we were here. From the moment we entered the establishment, the hostesses greeted us almost coldly, without many words. I explained that I initially booked the reservation for 3, but our son got sick at the last minute, so it would be just the two of us. Sometimes there are sensitivities around the party size, but the restaurant was completely empty. She sat us down in the back of the room, without much interaction. That's fine, but it goes against the warmth other restaurants show guests when they enter. Several minutes later (about 10) a waiter shows up with water, again, no words, and leaves. She comes back a few moments later with menus and returns a minute later with a question about the drinks we are going to order. The whole interaction has my wife lifting her eyebrow in a manner that I understood as, "That's weird." There was a coldness that was present, which at first we thought maybe was because the place was empty. It was 4 p.m., so right after the lunch crowd, but before the dinner rush. So we ordered drinks, and that interaction was fine; the drinks arrived with a bit more interaction and professionalism when she said, I hope you enjoy your drinks. Would you like to order appetizers and/or dinner? Ok, so maybe the in-between reservation was unusual for them. Ok, I get it. We ordered a few appetizers and 2 entrees. I went to the bathroom, and I could see the wait staff huddled together, laughing at something. When I came back to my seat, they were still huddled together, laughing at something. That didn't bother me, since they weren't busy, but it also explains the lack of interaction and the pause between menus and drinks being served. We didn't wait long for our appetizers. But that's where the issues really start to rear their heads. By the time she brought the appetizers, we had already finished our drinks. We were going to ask for another round, but she brought the appetizers so quickly that I guess she forgot to ask. We ate our appetizers, and there was about a 25-minute wait before she came to remove them and make room for our entrees. We thought she would interact with us then and ask how our appetizers were or whether we wanted another round of drinks. Silly me, she did neither. She removed the apps and came back within the next 2 minutes with our entrees. At this point, she asked if we needed anything else. I said no, and she left. After we ate our entrees, she came back and asked if we needed anything else. I said no, just the check. The whole experience was rushed, as if we were interrupting staff service or something. Bad service happens sometimes. All of us have had bad days in the office or at work. Somehow, the level of service and interaction here doesn't reflect the service on the island, which, at places like Atlantic Fish & Chop House, was outstanding and warm. Like they wanted us back. Same for Rockfish. Even places like Biscuits, which is always packed, remain warm and friendly. The service here was subpar. Even the hostess's interaction left us feeling like, hmmm. The food was solid, but I wouldn't call this place an upper-tier restaurant. There were certainly some racial undertones at play, but again, everyone has bad days at work. As we say, life by lifeing sometimes. But as we spread the word to our friends about our experience here, we have heard this isn't an isolated experience. And for that, we say, hmm, ok. We won't be back. There are just too many other higher-tier restaurants to eat at to experience this and feel like we should give it another go. I thought you all should know. read more

Cute restaurant on Main Street !! Sat at a table just in front of the window watching people and eating the Best meal I had in Vineyard Haven! I had the filet mignon with green beans and au gratin potatoes, friends tried the lobster ravioli and everything was absolutely phenomenal! The service was exceptional, the wine selection was wonderful, and every bite of my meal was delicious. I'm from Los Angeles, California, and I frequent steakhouses, so I have to say this place is definitely one of my top picks! We sat at the curvy white bar - great design btw - and the bartender greeted us quickly and nicely. Very sexysocial space; we ended up making new friends! Dirty martini and old fashioned were both perfect with the grilled oysters, and the only reason to not give 5 stars was because the sirloin pappardelle pasta was just ok, would have been better if it was mentioned that it is similar in flavor to Goulash (not my favorite flavor). Couldn't believe my wife and I could get a reservation the night before at a prime time during the bust season. Oysters and fritters were a solid start and Bibb and blue salad was perfect mix of soft lettuce blue cheese and lardons. My wife's pink lady was good. My gin and tonic was on weak side. The mushroom risotto was excellent as was potato's gratin and my filet was cooked perfectly. We had an Austin Pope Red with our meal. Our waitress was busy and yet always there when we needed her polite and knowledgeable. It's a cool space attached to hotel with a nice vibe and an interesting collection of 80s music the night we dined. This review is just for the steak sandwich aka cheesesteak. Not only is this the best sandwich on the island, it possibly could be the best cheesesteak in the Northeast. Served on toasted sourdough bread, with high quality meat (possibly dry aged) blue cheese, caramelized onions and au jus (not even needed). Copper sharp is the trendy cheesesteak cheese but blue cheese just works better at a different level. I would have proclaimed it the best cheesesteak in the Northeast but I haven't been to the shop in NYC that just serves one style of cheesesteak. read more

Apparently reservations can be hard, but luckily we were staying in the connected hotel and walked right in on a Thursday night. The staff was super friendly and the restaurant had a dark, cool vibe. The food came out quickly and was pretty good. I got chicken skewers as an appetizer and the first one tasted fresh, but the subsequent ones tasted stale. Very odd. I order the lamb chops as an entre. They were well seasoned and very tasty. They were served with a side of cold couscous. Unexpected, but good. I'd definitely recommend. read more

Went for a last minute dinner with the family on a Saturday night. The six of us were seated immediately, the waitress brought menus and took our drink orders, and returned quickly. We came for drinks at the bar with potential for a meal. We'd been sampling the cocktail scene on Main Street over a few days. Unfortunately, despite how delicious our cocktails were (French 75s) we were completely ignored after our first order. We were brought our first drinks and not revisited for at least another hour. An hour with empty glasses. Despite wanting another round of drinks, we eventually gave up, flagged down our bartender and asked for the check. I'd actually believed they'd closed. But, alas, new patrons arrived and were seated at the bar and served, whilst we sat and sulked. Such a shame. The first round was good. The food looked delicious. And the ambience was swank. We went back to 9 Craft with the Pops last week and left befuddled because some of the things we had liked were no longer good and some of the newer items we tried were better than anticipated. Unbelievably we got sat at the very same table--service is still pretty great. The hostess was friendly and our waitress was on top of everything, although we did not appreciate her explaining to us that tartare was raw. Uh, yeah, we know, sweetheart, it's not our first rodeo. For drinks, one of us got the sangria again (still wonderful) and the other tried their Kentucky cocktail, which was nice and refreshing. For apps, we got the corn fritters again (ditto on the still wonderful) and the deviled eggs--the ones with the beef tartare on top. They're tasty. A couple of the mains really disappointed. The lamb pasta that we raved about last time SUCKED. Why? Because last time, they used braised lamb, and this time it was ground lamb. BIG difference! We no longer recommend it whatsoever. The bourguignon pasta was also a complete joke--the meat was beyond chewy. A lazy, disgusting culinary whack job. However, we did enjoy the miso cod dish and all the accoutrements on that plate. The acadia salad (add grilled chicken) was fine. Unfortunately, the side of green beans (which came out late) that we loved last time also went down in quality because they weren't cooked long enough and the sauce wasn't as refined. At that point we decided to skip dessert here. So, all in all, some highs and some lows. It doesn't seem like whoever is at the helm of this kitchen is steering the ship quite right. This was our last meal on the Vineyard for the summer, and we wish it had been better. We might be back next time we're on the island, but also, we might not. Three stars, rounded down from 3.5 because at this price point, you should be putting out 4-star food. read more

This place is phenomenal. The food is high end, locally sourced and competitively priced. The service was first class, by our bartender, Remy. He was knowledgeable of the menu and was funny, too. Even though he was waiting on all of the customers at the bar and making all of the drinks for the restaurant at the same time with no bar back, he somehow managed to still be attentive to us. Our food was delicious. I am posting the 3 meals we enjoyed. One friend had 2 small plates and oysters, while I thoroughly enjoyed a perfectly cooked filet mignon, and the third friend loved her pasta. We enjoyed our cocktails, but did not partake in desserts, as we were too full. I love the decor inside, too. The seating is fun, there are many options. The owners really know what they are doing, as their other restaurant on island also never disappoints. read more

Shame on the management for letting a not fully trained waiter take a table on his own at a really busy time of year. We sat down and asked about bourbons. He told us the list is on the menu which it was not. He asked to order before we even got the drinks. I asked what the catch of the day was...his answer - Haddock fish. No more details. The food is very overpriced for what you get. I ordered appetizers, then a salad, then a main course. We got the appetizers then a few minutes later got the salad and the pork chop. "I thought that was what you wanted." was the response. But, I promise you I ordered it as three courses. Just not worth what we paid. read more

We had high hopes for 9 Craft after reading so many positive reviews. Unfortunately, our evening was a major letdown. We were a party of eight, and the experience began poorly due to how the restaurant handled our friend's dietary restriction--she has celiac disease. We've traveled extensively with her and dined at restaurants around the world, and she has never had an issue managing her needs. Tonight was a first. When she asked if certain gluten-free sides could be substituted, her request presented to the chef was refused. The kitchen showed no interest in helping. Simple substitutions like replacing a gluten-containing side with a vegetable--were refused. Instead, she was told she could order the dish, but have to pay for an additional gluten free side dish. In the end, she had a plain pork chop and a $12 side of rice. The original sides, which she could not eat, were still served and wasted. Several other members of our party had issues as well...one salad and two entrées were returned to the kitchen because they were so over-salted they were inedible. These guest went without dinner. Perhaps most disappointing was the management's total lack of effort to ensure we had a good experience. There was no apology, no offer to help, and no interest in making things right. In fact, the manager's demeanor bordered on rude and dismissive. While our server did his best and remained friendly, it was clear he had no support from his manager. When was the last time you spent several hundred dollars on a meal and walked away knowing you'd never return? I left hungry and went home to eat breakfast for dinner. With so many great restaurants in MV, don't waste your time or money here. read more

Went back a second time to try another dish that caught my eye the night before. I ordered the lobster risotto. The portion was a good size, and the flavor was okay, however, it was super rich and somewhat greasy. You could see the orange film and taste the richness immediately. While I wished I had not ordered this dish, I stayed committed. After all, if you spend $42 you need to finish the job! I like this place still, but would try something else next time. I came to Nine Craft Kitchen & Bar for lunch and was blown away by how amazing everything was--from the food to the ambiance. The space is stylish and welcoming, and every dish we ordered was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. Here are four standout items we tried: 1. Filet Mignon Deviled Eggs These were rich, elevated, and full of flavor. The filet mignon tartar gave them a luxurious touch, and the cured egg yolk made each bite silky and decadent. A super unique take on a classic. 2. Cashew Crusted Tuna Salad Absolutely delicious. The tuna was seared perfectly with a crunchy cashew crust, and the arugula, cucumber, red onion made it light, crisp, and refreshing. Loved the balance of flavors and textures. 3. Lobster Tostadas One word: WOW. Old Bay mayo, and caviar on a crispy tostada--every bite was layered, fresh, and full of flavor. A total showstopper. 4. Smoked Brisket Sandwich So tender and flavorful! The brisket practically melted in your mouth, and the cheddar cheese spread brought a bold, creamy contrast. Served on a soft brioche bun--absolute perfection. And last but definitely not least our server Mavi. 9 Craft is among our favorites on the island, so we go fairly frequently. The staff, as others have said, are great; friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. Their regular menu items are consistently good. Their specials often knock your socks off. If you have oyster fans in your group this is one of the top three on MV - fresh, local and most importantly well shucked (also check out Beach Road and Gard East). Oh, get fries for your table. Zoe the " Manager", was insensitive, unreceptive, rude, dismissive , and unwelcoming. Apparently our concern was not hers, that speaks volumes. I don't believe in revisiting or investing in ANY establishment where I'm disrespected and unwelcome. While the service and food were great, the experience was overshadowed by the lack luster, derogatory and unprofessional attitude of management. Your manager was very dismissive and disrespectful to our party. The waiter and staff were excellent. The food and drinks were great. It is a shame that the manager could not put her arrogance and pride aside to apologize to the person that approached her at the end of the evening to confront her about the reception we received. We were told that we needed to wait for the 5th person parking instead of being seated at the table we were told was ours. When advised that we could order a drink for the person parking and perhaps it would be helpful... she replied that it was "not helpful." Hopefully this was not a biased reaction. The island is in dire need for decent upscale restaurants and this one fits the bill. It has a modern and lively vibe located in an old building that has been updated- creating the perfect balance between old and new. Staff were attentive, friendly and professional. Food was delicious with reasonable portions. We had the Cesar salad, Sesame chicken bites and the Pappardelle Bourguignon(swimming in delicious sauce) and homemade Crème Brûlée(scrumptious). A bit pricey but absolutely justified and worth it! We are definitely coming back! read more

This is a review specifically for the callus owner/chef and rude front-house manager. Our head waiter and a couple of servers were stellar. He did his best and remained friendly, but he clearly had no support from the front-house manager or the chef/owner. We visited 9CK about two weeks ago and the bad taste of that experience is still in my mouth. If I could give it a zero I would have. Our evening was a major letdown. We were a large and we had called the restaurant previously to ensure they could accommodate our friend's dietary restriction -- GF + celiac disease. They confirmed that they indeed had GF options. Many in our group have traveled extensively with our friend and dined at restaurants worldwide. Never once have we had an issue. Tonight was a first of its kind! When we asked if a gluten-free side could be substituted on a main dish the chef flat out refused. A substitutions of replacing a gluten-containing side with a vegetable--were also refused. Instead, we were told we could order the dish, but have to pay for an additional gluten free side dish. In the end, we did just that, ($12 for a side of rice!). BTW, when the main came out, it still had the original sides with it which were not going to be eaten! Because the chef/kitchen is so set in his ways, he would rather waste food than alter a dish. How stupid is that‽ Additionally, others in our group also had issues with the food. several salads and two entrées were returned to the kitchen because they were waaaayyyy over-salted and inedible. The kitchen refused to replace the dinners without charging. Most disappointing was the front house manager's complete lack of empathy. "The owner/chef does not like to alter his dishes because it is not a proper representation of his cooking." What‽‽‽ She offered no apology and showed no interest in making things right for us. Her demeanor was rude and dismissive. You may ask me -- Well, why didn't you just leave? I guess we are hardwired for hope. Also, we were a large group, it was on the later side and finding another place for all of us was likely impossible. Lastly, I'd like to emphasize that the chef/owner never showed his face to us during or after this entire distasteful experience. Coward? There are so many great restaurants on MV, this is truly NOT one of them. I'd advise you not to waste your time or money here. read more

The food was pretty terrible. Had the summer strawberry salad, which was supposed to have cashew in it. I guess they called it a strawberry salad because there was exactly one strawberry in it that had been cut into numerous tiny little pieces. As far as the Cashew went, it was just that; One cashew chopped into tiny little pieces. We also had the miso cod which was over, salted to the point of being almost inedible. We also had the lobster risotto. The rice was gummy, and the lobster overcooked. Our waiter never bothered to ask us if we were enjoying our meal. We've had some excellent meals here on Martha's Vineyard, but this was absolutely not one of them read more

We came off the ferry, exhausted and hungry from planes, Ubers, and ferries. We stumbled upon 9 craft kitchen and bar, and couldn't have been more pleased! We started with an espresso martini (delicious and not too sweet, made by Micko) and then had an afternoon snack of tuna lettuce wrap, swordfish sandwich, tuna arugula salad and a burger. My husband and I sat at the bar and had very good service. We had several cocktails from their menu and all of them were good, the bartender seemed to know her stuff. We started with the chowder and lobster bisque which were both quite tasty but over seasoned. Shared the shrimp cocktail, tuna lettuce wraps and corn fritters, and again, also tasty with fresh ingredients but too salty (and we like salt a LOT). Hopefully the chef can tone it back because I think the menu has a lot of delicious potential. read more
