This place used to at least be friendly. The rude waitress argued that my burger and onion rings took at least 20 minutes. It was more like 25 and the place was dead. I was the only person waiting for food. When I got the order, the fries (notice I ordered onion rings) were cold and the burger was burnt on the outside and raw in the middle. Well not too much to good to say about this this place...except that they had roasted garlic on their salad bar. Well I ordered the Dirty Steak, Medium Well...and as u can can see it was charred medium and to top it all off, the sauce that was supposed to come with it, well it didn't...I tried to ask for it but our waitress was no where to be seen until i was done. Now back to steak, for making it with a Vermont maple and Kentucky bourbon...let's just say I needed to add salt because it was that bland. I tasted more charred meat then anything. We spoke to the hostess...said "hello we have a party of 3" and she completely ignored us. First of all, I have to preface this by saying that we eventually decided to not eat at Mister Ups. We parked under the bridge and walked in, there was a guy nearly passed out in the waiting area, and a group of four waiting to be seated. We waited a few minutes and flagged down the host. He asked how many were in our party and we told him 4 Adults and 2 High Chairs. It was about 6:30 on a Sunday night, but he told us that it would be a fifteen minute wait. The place was busy, so we said we would wait. Several more groups entered before us. A four-top and a three-top were seated, almost as soon as they walked in the door. Then an eight-top was seated before us--A college women's field hockey team! When we tried to find the host, he was nowhere to be seen. And after a few more minutes of hunting him down--where he gave us the fake, I'll be with you in just a few minutes, a waitress tried to seat us in a four-top corner booth with the two high chairs on the same end of the booth, which blocked the cluttered aisle way. We said, "I'm afraid this won't work," as did the man in the booth next to ours, who would have been barricaded into his seat. The waitress responded, "Well, that's all we have," and we said, "Fine, we're leaving." And we did. The place is filthy, loud and serves college students liquor. If you are into that kind of thing, (eg a college student) this may be more your cup of tea. But if you have a family, or are over the age of 22, I'd skip this place entirely, and go ANYWHERE ELSE in town. read more

Their teriyaki sirloin is really good though and has become my go-to meal with the salad bar. Though unpreparedness could be displayed apologetically and with attention to customers when possible, the wait staff did not acknowledge our presence until 1hr after we had sat down, and that was only to meekly ask if someone else had already helped us. By that point we had ordered all of our drinks and food from the bar. The bartender was great and helpful. Fine bar for a college crowd. Much like most college housing cleanliness is not an issue. A nice deck along the river would have been nicer at night when darkness hid the dirty floor and chairs. The rest rooms had just been hit with straight bleach which was a tad harsh. I suspect someone dumped it right out of the bottle rather than diluted to a normal restaurant cleaning solution. The Thai wrap had no peanut sauce, but the Bison burgher was tasty. The onion rings were as good as frozen can get, which is not so bad. We were a group of three that walked in on a Sunday evening around 7:30. The resturant was pretty dead, we were seated right away. Our waitress was courteous, but really needed to pay attention. I asked for a drink with no ice - it came with ice. She did realize her mistake and offered another soda but meh what ever it was just ice. However when I ordered my meal I said no L, T, P on the burger - It came with all of it. It took 45 minutes for one pizza, a burger, and a hot bbq sandwich. As I said it wasn't very busy. My friend said his pizza was good. My burger was well done not med well but it was not dry and it was flavorful, and my hubby said his bbq sandwich was good. Overall just meh. This place was recommended to us by the proprietor of "Frog Alley Leather and Tattoos." Since it was in easy walking distance, we decided to give it a chance and I'm glad we did. We almost missed it because our "Fearless Leader" was starting to take us OVER the bridge, but one of our distaff members stopped a passerby for directions (naturally). Turns out, the place is UNDER the bridge, and if we walked over we'd've never seen it. The clam chowder was WONDERFUL (as I've come to expect when getting clam chowder anywhere in New England). The "Ragin' Cajun" burger wasn't nearly as spicy as I'd expected but it was still delicious. I thought it would come with some kind of Cajun/Creole kind of sauce, but it was rather "dry" in that regard so I had to fall back on that good ol' American standby: KETCHUP. I didn't bother with the fries and instead got the side Caesar salad which was also very good. A good recommendation for lunch, and now I'm passing it along on Yelp. Enjoy! read more

Service can be a little spotty at times as this restaurant can be a jumping off point for young newbie servers from the nearby high school, but also some seasoned veterans that keep it together. They sort of got shafted by the new bridge they built which blocks some of their view of the river and kind of puts them in a dark hole underneath Middlebury that you can't really see. read more

The redesign of the streets in Downtown Middlebury has made Mister Ups, unfortunately, invisible from the road. My friends and I went to Mister Ups a few nights during June 2011 when the other bar in town, Two Brothers Tavern, was too full. On the bright side, we often had the whole place to ourselves and the bar food was always great! On the downside, the beer selection was pretty limited and they closed at midnight (Two Brothers stayed open until 2AM every night). The staff was fine and the environment was pleasant/clean. This has been a staple in Middlebury for so long. I feel it's now hurting them. The potential to be awesome is there with the menu and the scenery. But our table was sticky, very dirty in the corners with standing food, the service was sub par at best. We had a Vermont burger and fish and chips with salad bar add ons. Salad bar worth it.
