    Four piece

3.5 stars Stopped into Mitch's Texas Style Barbecue in Amarillo, which is tucked inside a Valero gas station but don't let that fool you. I was just looking for a quick bite before hitting the road again, and the Yelp reviews didn't steer me wrong. I ordered the four-piece combo: two ribs, two chicken tenders, waffle fries, and a drink. Everything was served hot and fresh. The barbecue sauce was solid, nice flavor without being overpowering. The ribs were decent, and the chicken tenders were cooked perfectly, though the breading was way too spicy for me (I ended up peeling it off and still enjoyed the chicken inside). Waffle fries were crispy and satisfying, and the price felt fair for the portion. Nothing fancy--again, gas station--but definitely better than expected. Would I go out of my way for it? Probably not. But for a quick, hot meal on the road? It hit the spot.

It's inside of a gas station, of which we were surprised!! They were out of pulled pork sad news Got the brisket it was a bit dry for my taste It came with no home potato chips, they were good, the macaroni was not worth my calories.

Staying at the RV park next door & this was an easy walk over. This is not a typical Truck stop/gas station restaurant. It is a Restaurant with a truck stop attached . You can see from the pics the amount of food was definitely worth the prices. Getting to watch the staff member make your plate was fun. He made sure your product was weighed to ensure you didn't get short changed on amounts. I saw someone complaining about dry meat, well we didn't see/experience that. Do they not know what BBQ sauce is? Wife's turkey was tender, juicy, & had enough to add to her salad today. Her macaroni & cheese with green peppers was delicious. Little too warm for her, so I was the lucky one. My pulled pork sandwich was great & had enough to bring home for a next day sandwich. I enjoyed the special chips. Plenty of seating for families. THEY HAD TEXAS SWEET TEA. Parking lot will accommodate any size motorhome of pull RV. The staff were friendly, quick, keeping seating area clean, great customer service. Look at the staff photo, that is a great team.. I was to give a shout out to Domonic, because he was quick with a smile & kind word. We will be back. There is a large dog park, kid's playground, & covered picnic tables right outside.

Unsuspecting little bbq place inside a truck stop. You walk in you can smell the bbq. You order at a counter and walk down the line. They have a condiment bar with bbq sauce, pickles and peppers. We were there less than hour before they closed so some of their options were limited. We ordered brisket nachos add queso cheese. The. Hops are kettle cooked chips and I know you don't think nachos when you hear kettle cooked chips but hear me out. They were soft yet still crunchy enough to hold up to the amount of topping they put on the nachos. Toppings we chose Beans Queso Shredded cheese Jalapenos Spicy bbq sauce Additional toppings they have that we didn't get were Sour cream Onions I think I may be missing a topping but can't remember for sure. They load the toppings on and it was definitely enough for 2 of us to share. The brisket wasn't dry and had a decent smoke taste. I also got the only sausage they have had left for the day which was polish. The skin on it was a bit tough and it was greasy so I don't think I will be ordering that again. Hubby tried the banana pudding and said it's the best he's ever had. They cut up the banana fresh and crumble the wafers on fresh as well so no soggy gross toppings. Pudding was light and fluffy He also got a lemon bar but hasn't tried it yet Overall decent bbq with truck parking and EV chargers.

Located at the Toot n Totum truck stop just outside the Amarillo airport. I had the hot sausages (star of the show) ribs and brisket. The brisket was a little dry. However the sausages and ribs were tasty, moist and served hot. For the sides I had cole slaw and green chili Mac n cheese. I'd pass on the beans as they looked a little long in the tooth.

I've had gas station Q that was bomb. This wasn't one of them. Service was friendly but the brisket was dry. The beans & slaw were average. The green chile & cheddar sausage link & green chili mac 'n cheese were both very good. Kinda' disappointing for the sole TX BBQ we tried on this road trip.

We were pleasantly surprised to find Mitch's bbq at the EV charging station in Amarillo, TX. Fast, clean, great menu, and delicious meat! My husband and I had the #1 meal - meat, chips, plus 2 sides. We both ordered turkey. Very moist and not salty! Great tasting bbq sauces. $30 for two people. Wish they had this restaurant where we live! All the sides looked great. My husband had potato salad and coleslaw. I had green beans and Coleslaw.

Stockpile: chopped brisket & beans on chips.

Well, so much for my diet. The Stockpile is just too much BBQ brisket with fixings to skip at $12. Plus, I have to eat something while charging my Tesla here. They make it to specifications, hot or regular sauce, jalapeños or not, and cheese, of course. Plenty of other meat trays and sandwiches too. The tables are in the middle of the convenience store, so don't be shy. Beats the Wendy's here by a mile.

They were supposed to be Hawaiian sliders on Hawaiian bread, but just plain bread nothing Hawaiian at all about them.
    Chris E.

The mac & cheese was disgusting. My food was served cold they were out of almost everything. The meat was very dry. Not worth the stop at all. The steam tray items look like they've been there for a month.

Very cool concept to have a full service BBQ place inside a convenience store (with Tesla Super Chargers). My man ordered the sliced brisket plate and I ordered the 2 meat plate with two different types of sausage. Our sides were fried okra, coleslaw and mac and cheese. Lastly, I though an order of the banana pudding would be great. We choose poorly with everything. Boo. It's not often that we walk away from a meal unhappy, but ya know. It happens occasionally. Mitch's has some room for improvement and with some tweaks, can be much, much better. Here's a few we noticed: less cheese in the sausage (I know, who would have ever thought less cheese is better!). The okra was soggy, so maybe working out the timing so that the crispy coating isn't compromised. The brisket was good, but the sauce was too vinegary for me and just meh for my man. The banana pudding was maybe the most disappointing. I'm not sure that the pudding actually was, but it was unlike anything I've ever had - way too dense with only a hint of banana. The staff cut 1/4 of a banana into small pieces and added a few slices to the bottom and top sections of the container we ordered. He took a few 'nilla wafers and crumbled them up on top of the dense mass. It was odd. No beuno. We each took a few bites and left the rest. We could have chosen the Wendy's that was next door, in the same open space. As we were leaving, we both shared that Wendy's would have been a better choice. Sometimes, it's knowing what you are getting that matters most.

Unfortunately, the experience was ruined at the counter. I stood there for several minutes while the young man directly in front of me failed to acknowledge me--not even a quick "I'll be with you in a moment." Instead, he and a coworker spent several minutes discussing a chopped beef sandwich while I waited. When a customer is standing right in front of you, that lack of acknowledgment and basic service is unacceptable. I seriously considered walking out, but decided to order some food to go. The brisket had a solid, flavorful bark, but the ribs were overcooked. I also tried the jalapeño-cheese sausage after being told they did not make their original sausage in-house. Overall, the disappointing service overshadowed the food. This was a terrible customer experience and unlike anything I've encountered at a barbecue restaurant in the Texas Panhandle.

I am on one of those once-in-a-lifetime walkabouts with my daughter as we hop from asphalt lily pad to lily pad in her beat-up RAV 4, journeying ever Eastward from the gently lapping waves of Santa Barbara to Miami's Solla Salew shores where she will matriculate for her marine mammal masters (The Tripple M they call it in various job posting and loan application sites). Its been triple digit Temperatures for the last 20 hours of driving. A tour of hades realm. I will remember the specific moment today when my wonderful, non-red-meat-eating daughter, in an enduring act of kindness suggested that we go to a bar-b-que during our brief run through the Texas pan-handle as recompense for going to visit her friend in OKC rather than run the southern grill gauntlet through Dallas. I pressed the yelp button and we went down the Amarillo rabbit hole...across some train tracks, around the aforementioned canted "Jesus is here" billboard (but before the better tended "Jesus is Coming" promissory), past two cows too hot to stand, down a lane next to an grain silo, stood a sign. It stated simply but profoundly, "Beer Open" Surviving the sweep of ages, what more is there really in life? Beer? Check. Open? Always on so many levels. As my eyes wandered over to the more traditional homage to this establishment's Nome de guere- "Pork n' Things". I was able to surmise the primary offerings from the initial noun but I was intrigued by the 'n' things' and what they might entail (or perhaps entrail). Girding our loins, we crossed the heavenly air conditioned threshold. Suffice to say, God had not yet made his/her/their/them/they appearance and it wasn't until after we ordered our sweet tea/lemonade that I made the decision that changed my life. I asked for some of the brisket (my choice was chopped) and some of the ribs I saw walking out the door with a Harley driver into the teeth of that Texas summer furnace heat. We sat idly, my daughter pondering her phone and striking up a conversation with a shy, angelic little girl who had bravely helped her mom set the table for us and shared her Lilo and stich drawing. It was at this moment that my world tilted. I figured that I would go for the brisket first as an appetizer to the main course of ribs. They had chopped it finely and I sporked half of it into my mouth. Epiphany. So many images colliding at once, each visually shouting over the other to be heard... To be RECOGNIZED. I remember a childhood national geographic where the Eskimo dad offered the still pumping seal heart to his son as he bit down and the blood flowed. I thought of Jody Foster trans-warping to another dimension mumbling "I didn't know! I didn't know! at the grandeur of the cosmos. I thought of the show 'Chopped' where they lectured recalcitrant chefs on not just making a meal but rather transforming it...elevating it to some other plane of being. That first bite punched though my mortal coil like a coherent beam of light from a collapsing neutron star raising my orbit to a plane of being I did not know existed. Stripping away layers of civilization, I felt primal and powerful. Like Dungeon Crawler Carl, I had been converted...elevated to something greater than my constituent bits. Part dire wolf, part berserker, part 90th level undead necromancing mage. The fat and smoked meat sat in my mouth, my brain shutting down my throat muscles not wanting this oral carnality to end. Imagine stripping away every vestige of civilization, de-evolving a million years when survival and procreation were equal partners in a race to the future. My body was humming and I felt alive in a way that I had not since that weekend in Tiajuana with those carny workers. I had a brief moment of panic that my newfound vigor would cause me to spontaneously combust or that this magical alchemy would somehow bind with the brisket and miraculously impregnate a wandering waitress out of sheer will...like the reproductive equivalent of magnetic induction such was the primordial essence of that single bite. But I digress. Suffice to say, I am a California lifer. I can tell you what cheese is on a charcuterie board and whether the uni is fresh but I don't have sufficient reference for what is considered presentable bar-b-que. My data set is certainly sparse but in my humble, untrained opinion, if you need a reference point...a place to start your own bar-b-que walkabout, Amarillo's Pork n' Things is a guiding star to what brisket and pork ribs can be in the hands of a master truly anointed, perhaps divinely, in their craft.

After an afternoon of driving in the hot Texas summer, we arrived into Amarillo and had built up an appetite. No better place to stop than The Big Texan! If you haven't already heard of The Big Texan (whether it be through shows like Man v. Food, social media, etc), there's a good chance you'll have heard of it while on the drive to Amarillo with the innumerable billboard signs that they've invested in. Upon arrival, it definitely lives up to the name. You're greeted by a giant cattle that's in front of the restaurant. The front porch is reminiscent of Cracker Barrel but on a much grander scale. We were fortunate to not have a wait despite it being near dinner time. Even more lucky, we were seated at a table close to stage. It did take a bit of time before our waiter came by but we weren't in a rush and enjoyed the atmosphere. Once he came by, he was extremely kind and welcoming. We were given our menus and a basket of rolls. The bread was standard. Now, I did mention earlier that it was closer to dinner time. Specifically, that meant after 4. We had tried to catch the lunch special... that happens to end at 4. Nonetheless, our waiter was more than kind enough to extend that timing for us which we greatly appreciated (note - please don't expect this, we just fortunate!). With that being said, we ordered and got our food shortly after. I personally got the chopped steak with a side of brocolli and mac & cheese. Both sides were standard. The chopped steak was great. It came in a flavorful gravy and was served on top of mashed potatoes. Recommend! Throughout our meal, there were two brave souls that attempted the infamous 72 oz steak challenge. It takes place on the aforementioned stage. I did contemplate it. Though, I did eventually chicken out. From my observation, it looks like you pay before the meal. If you succeed, you get a full refund after. And of course all the recognition that comes with it. I'm not sure if the two valiant competitors won in the end but I have no doubt they left full. Last thing to note. Aside from the restaurant itself, The Big Texan has other areas in the building itself. At the entrance, you are greeted by a dessert parlor with baked good and ice cream. Further inside, there's a bar area to the left. At the end of the hall, there are the restrooms with some interesting decor. Finally, outside, there are some tables and other Western outdoor furnishings. I assume the area is for events. Regardless, an interesting area to visit!

Anyway, I would definitely come back and bring family and friends.
