    Mac and cheese
    Eat My Critique ..

The Order - Mezcalita, Hummus & Naan, Roasted Broccoli & Tahini, Tostadas de Jurel and Shrimp Mac and Cheese. The Cost - ~$24 per person The Great - The Tostadas de Jurel (Yellowtail) was the best dish of the night. Incredible yellowtail in an avocado emulsion with sweet pieces of ginger and leek on tostadas combined to make a flavorful and fresh dish representative of high end, modern, Baja California cuisine. The Shrimp Mac & Cheese was also a great dish. Large macaroni with Gouda cheese, chipotle and grilled shrimp, the dish hit all the right spots. The Good - The Mezcalita, their version of the typical margarita-made-with-mezcal cocktail, was done with licor de ancho reyes (chile liquor), orange and passion fruit juice. The cocktail had a strong orange taste but I didn't really feel the passionfruit and was disappointing that it wasn't spicy. The Hummus & Naan was not a typical Valle de Guadalupe menu find but the grilled naan was tasty. The hummus was just okay though and needed more tahini. The Okay - Where the hummus might have been lacking in tahini, the Roasted Broccoli & Tahini was not. Cooked with olive oil and lemon juice, the combination of flavors should have worked but the finished product was not anything to write home about. The dish would be better suited as a side rather than a stand alone appetizer. The Verdict - Mixturas is a good addition to the Valle scene. It won't blow you away like some of the other Valle restaurants but the price point is good and the setting is beautiful. Worth a visit. I am torn between 3 and 4 stars, but customer service, the view, and music is bumping it up to 4 stars. We originally went here to go to visit Relieve wine tasting room. When we got to Relieve there was no one there (it turns out they were "closed for the season" though no signage existed to tell us of this). However, just next door is Mixtura so we popped in there to taste some Relieve wines and have some of their food. My wife got a ham and cheese sandwich and really enjoyed it. I got a "quesadilla" with barbacoa, and for me it was unlike any quesadilla I had ever had. I would have called it a "street taco with cheese", because there was plenty of meat, but hardly any cheese (which I normally take to be the centerpiece of a quesadilla). It was good, but nothing great. It was very small for a quesadilla, but that was fine given how inexpensive it was. Their selection of Relieve wines by the glass was very small, and that was disappointing. I ordered one, but when it came the glass had very little wine in it. It turns out this small amount was all they had left, and thus they were giving it to me complimentary. The view was very nice, and they had very good music. And, as seemed to be the case with almost every place we visited in Valle De Guadalupe, we had very friendly servers. I'd definitely give this place a go again for lunch and wine.

What a great restaurant within the complex of the Relieve Winery! Great drinks and good food and to top it off an amazing view of the vineyards

Amazing food and drinks tapas style.

Amazing day and food ! The drinks are off the chain. This place is all outdoor in the middle of the grapes. The ambiance is super chill.

    Very budget-friendly!

If you've been to the winery Relieve you may or may not have noticed an outdoor eatery within sight across the large vineyard. Mixtura came up on a Yelp search for a brunch spot in the area and is located down a short road from Relieve. It's completely outdoors and most of the seating is located on their spacious covered deck. We visited on a sunny September afternoon and had a very pleasant brunch experience. We didn't have a reservation but were seated right away and were one of two other parties at the restaurant. The first thing I noticed was how varied the menu was. It didn't seem like they were going for any one cuisine and I appreciated the variety. My bf was in the mood for a Mexican breakfast and I wanted classic American. I ordered the bacon, egg and waffle dish and it was a very straight forward, no nonsense dish. There wasn't any flair to it or any special added flavors but it was good. My bf ordered the chilaquiles and added barbacoa and said it was some of the best chilaquiles he'd ever had. Neither of us had ever had barbacoa in our chilaquiles before but he said it was delicious. He devoured it before I could ask for a bite so I can't comment on it myself. Our cocktails were both very refreshing and spirit-forward. I would order both of them again - we got the Pink Flamingo and Mala Hierba. As there weren't may parties at the restaurant at the time, our servers were able to check on us often and our meals arrived quickly. We weren't sure how we could have missed this awesome brunch spot during previous visits to Relieve but we were told that Mixtura has been running for four years. They even have a DJ who was spinning some awesome tunes that were perfect for the sunny, breezy outdoor vibe. The only thing I just don't understand is how they were not more packed during a Sunday brunch hour. Perhaps people haven't realized that there's a hidden brunch gem in this area but hopefully reviews like mine help bring attention to this awesome place!

One word, amazing. Fresh, clean, flavor over all else. There something to be said when a restaurant "runs out" of an item. It's not a bad thing, it means they aren't selling you frozen items bought from Costco last month. Octopus was perfectly grilled, quail melted after a fire grilled crunch. Risotto was creamy and perfectly prepared. But the finish was a desert with a warm Chocolate cake and lavender ice cream with small lavender flowers dusted on top. Paired with a local wine and a sunset only found in Mexico. Absolute perfection.

I was told this was the place for restaurant by a local-of course I had to try it. This place is fire. Like the roof is on fire, kind of fire. I'm dating myself aren't I? Ha. Located on a corner, The Parian, is a locals restaurant. You walk into a fiesta of a restaurant. Brightly decorated with typical Mexican decoration-think bright pinks, yellows and greens. There's colorful paper cut outs (papel picado)strewn across the ceiling, windows everywhere and colorful walls. I've been here twice & both times it was busy but not overwhelming. Walked in both times without having to wait for a seat to open up. The menu is typical of what you would see in a Mexican restaurant--and no, avocado toast ain't on the menu. Menudo, chilaquiles, hot cakes, machaca con huevo. These heavy & oh so delicious meals are all here. The tortilla (flour and corn) are both made in house. The salsa and chips they set when you first arrive are authentic. This is the kind of food that'll make you want to take nap after, it's so heavy. Only downside is they don't have cafe de olla. But that's not a bad thing, there's an amazing coffee shop down the street from the restaurant (Xcaanda) :) Definitely a gem in Ensenada & one that I will continue to visit.

But figured I needed a better way to eat it while visiting Ensenada again with my wife. So this time, went to the nearby sister restaurant, Sabina. It's named for the owner of the original food stand, and there are a lot of pictures of her with other celebrities who appreciated her talent in creating seafood combinations. The Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurant is within walking distance from the cruise port, and is located in an area with a lot of other restaurants and shops. We came there soon after it opened around 10 am, and had the choice of indoor or outdoor seating. We showed that we were coming from California, by choosing indoor seating. We were given colorful menus and suggestions. We also got complementary chips and salsa, with 4 different varieties of her famous salsas being served. I tried all four of them, and two of them were way too hot, even in moderation. I did really like the green salsa, which tasted more like a simple guacamole. It also came with thinly slices of lime...each small slice producing so much more juice than any lime we get in California. My wife doesn't like raw seafood, so chose garlic shrimp (Caramones al Mojo de Ajo for Mex$405). There were plenty of jumbo headless, shell-on white shrimp, with the butter sauce being very light and not too garlicky. It came with a very good rice pilaf and sauteed vegetables (mostly squash which neither of us are a fan of). I went with 3 choices from the 5 selection 'Champion' list: 1. Erizo con Almeja (Sea Urchin with Clam for Mex$230) - winner of LA Street Food Fest 2011 for Best Original Showmanship 2. Caracol con Lajas de Caracol (Mixed Ceviche with Sea Snail for Mex$209) - winner of LA Street Food Fest 2012 for Best in Show 3. Singapur (Mex$209) - winner of LA Street Food Fest 2013 for unknown category). All three were piled high with fresh seafood, embellished with perfectly ripe avocado slices. None of them needed additional salsa, but adding a squeeze of lime enhanced. My favorite was the Singapore and would try the other two tostadas on the winners list the next time. The best way would be to order all the tostadas and split amongst a group of 4 or 5 friends (there are 6 other special tostadas and you can also create your own with the fresh seafood ingredients). Got two bottles of water (Mex$75 each...not cheap) and a local beer (Vera Niega Mexican Ale, a bottle being Mex$110) that was excellent. Service was attentive and friendly throughout, with multiple servers (Horacio and Antonio) attending to us, all trying to make sure we had a good time. Credit cards are accepted, using a modern tableside POS, and I was happy to pay a gratuity over what is customary. Bathrooms are modern, with individual stalls (most of them gender neutral) all sharing a nice common set of sinks. My wife and I left in fine spirits and it was beginning to fill up more as we left (all dining al fresco, of course). Dining at the nearby original food cart is worth the initial experience, but there is something to having food this good in a sit-down restaurant. Sabina is that place.

This is a spot that you can sit down and drink a beer and get the same amazing seafood. My favorites were the sea urchin tostada as well as the bluefin tostada with fried leaks on top of it. A bonus is that they give you salsa and chips with four different types of salsas. We also grabbed a couple of beers in margaritas which were amazing as well. This is a great spot for a well-known sit down restaurant for seafood tostadas.
