This place is a solid 4.5 stars. I have to deduct a 1/2 star because when my gf and i showed up to order the sushi/sashimi omakase, they weren't offering it that day. The kaiseki omakase is a solid alternative. We also opted for the sake pairing, which provides a "shot" of sake with every course. Our Kaiseki omakase ended up being 7 courses. 1st: uni with cheese - decadent and earthy and stick to your ribs feel. 2nd: assorted sashimi - very fresh pieces with a slightly poached lobster that was the star 3rd: silky egg custard with crab meat inside and a gingko nut, topped off with gold flakes. So silky it put baby food to shame 4th: slightly torched arctic char and tako (octopus). The octopus was grilled to perfection with a nice pleasant texture. It wasn't chewy. The arctic char had a crispy skin and a raw piece of fish that was just a pleasant balance. 5th: tempura fried salt water eel - delectable. The tempure was airy and crispy. 6th: seared duck breast - heavy and decadent and rich. The berries were there to cut the richness of the duck 7th: assorted nigiri - chutoro for the win We added an 8th of extra nigiri - they didn't have the otoro but we did get the foie gras nigiri which is solid. It really melts in your mouth. For dessert, we ordered the green tea tiramisu. The taste of the matcha powder had a hint of cannabis? but maybe because the green tea was so concentrated? I'm not sure. The server was attentive always refilling my water glass and she was knowledgeable of the sakes. Will def be back and perhaps next time sit at the counter. read more

The ambiance is really nice and I found that it was quiet and comforting. The waitress was super attentive and described all the courses in detail. I believe it's 6 courses. Forgive me for not getting pics of everything. One of the things I had was an uni sashimi in the shell. I normally am not a huge fan of uni but this was so dang good. So creamy and fresh. We also has a course of a hot tofu pudding with miso and crab... Dang. So yummy and warm for a cold day. One of my favorites was the duck. This was cooked to perfection and melted in your mouth. The watercress salad was good and there are lots of wonderful small plates (which we didn't get this time) to enhance the nigiri. Sawagani (Japanese fresh water crab) special was so cool!!! Amazing dining experience. We tried the Hamayaki due to the rave reviews. It was for sure a flavor bomb but I wouldn't eat it again. Scallops, nigiri and sushi rolls were phenomenal. Expensive but worth it for a fun date night. Reservations recommended but they do leave. A few seats open for walk ins. read more

Bar none the best and so goes the higher than most prices BUT for the quality and sushi/sashimi grade well worth every $$$! Best way to get the best experience is to get the 4 course for $60 to start you will appreciate once you concluded the experience. The only sour grapes O had was missing out on ordering sashimi. We found this place on Yelp. Its pretty pricey and you need reservations. We we're able to get last minute reservation right when they opened. We had 15 minutes to get to the place but we made it. The place is small but look nice. They staff was welcoming and we'll informed. The sushi chefs were from Japan. We got the omakase the $78 one and the $45 nigiri one with just raw sushi. How did I just discover this place did lunch?!?! Have been here for dinner before and its always phenomenal. Lunch is the best kept secret of this place though. There are a few things I love on the dinner menu that you cant get at lunch (fish specials, duck!!!!!) but the bento box is unbelievable. Having been here multiple times for lunch now, the bento box is always different and never disappointing. We also order the pick two from the menu and split everything. The rolls are irresistible and we usually get that on top of the two meals, which is A LOT of food. Favorite dishes are the hamayaki, tuna Toro roll, ceviche roll, and lobster roll (sushi, not sandwich). Let me start off by saying... It's always a pleasure going here! I am always greeted nicely, and promptly seated. Whenever my boyfriend and I go here, we order the tei shoku! What is out inside rotates, which is awesome! The service is always awesome, and the service is always prompt! The food is always fresh and amazing too! The service is inviting and deliberate. We live in the Portland area and if any of our out of town friends were looking for this type or restaurant, Miyake would be near the top. This place is recommended by a local Japanese. I came here 3 times when I visited in Portland! All the food is very fresh. I will recommend to sit in the bar area, you can see how chefs preparing your food. Dinner -- Omasake is very good, the waitress asked us do we have any allergy? And what we do not want on our dish. I came here for dinner last week and WOW, was I impressed. If you ever have the chance to do a chef's tasting menu, do it. This is one place where you can try it. When I came, there was a 7 course menu and the quality and presentation of all the dishes was exquisite. The dishes included grilled uni, a sashimi sampler (including lobster sashimi which I didn't realize was so good), a lobster/mushroom hot custard, little tiny clams, pickled herring with local beets, seared duck with this incredible chili pepper yuzu smear, and a 3 piece nigiri sampler. There was also a complimentary appetizer of pickled daikon? and edamame; as well as complimentary dessert of yuzu macarons. Omg. There wasn't one thing that was sub-par in any way. So Miyake, you get 5 stars. :) PS The yuzu lemonade is also a fantastic fizzy drink that compliments the fish nicely. read more

This place is very expensive. When you taste the food, you will know why this is so. I have had cheaper sushi, and equivalent quality sushi, but I have seldom had better. Other items are similarly spendy, but the quality is excellent. The space here is intimate, elegant, and very hard to spot from the outside of the building. Aside from sushi, we enjoyed the Ramen with Chicken (shio ramen in a miyake farm chicken dashi), the Pork Belly (yaki buta- braised pork belly), and the Daikon Salad (w/ napa cabbage & carrots in a sesame-nori vinagrette). Came with my husband for their lunch omakase. We were immediately greeted by their very friendly staffs. We sat at the bar and each ordered lunch omakase ($40 for ten nigiri) and gaze uni ($8). It was my husband's second time and my first time coming. I was very excited to try because I've heard only good things from my husband. My husband's and my pieces were slightly different (attached photos). My favorite ones were o-toro, scallop, lobster, and uni. The gaze uni was also very fresh. If I lived in Maine, I would probably come here a lot because nothing can beat the $40 for ten pieces deal for such high qualities. (or I may be just so used to omakase prices in New York). I'm from DC and have had my fair share of wonderful sushi, BUT... this was a total treat. I arrived 10 mins early for my 6pm reservation and was greeted very warmly. The establishment is cozy and decorated minimalistically. I sat at the bar...which is a MUST. You feel like an integral part of the cooking process and experience. Chef Mass Miyake glanced over and smiled! I ordered the Omakase, which was totally worth every penny. This included unagi, sashimi plate, crab egg custard, tempura eel, charred tuna, grilled duck breast and nigiri plate. This was on Eaters list for must eats in Portland and man o man did they hit this one out of the park. Everything and I mean everything about miyake is excellent. We came in for lunch and were just absolutely blown away. Located right next to the harbor hotel it's in a nondescript building that is easy to miss. When you walk in it's basically one room that has seating for about 50 or so people. Their lunch menu is primarily bento box, ala Carte sushi/sashimi , and a price fixe 21 dollarish menu. You really cannot go wrong. We opted for the price fixe, you start with the miso soup. This was easily the best miso soup I have ever had, I'm not an expert but this was truly delicious. It had these magical smokey undertones to go with the perfectly clean broth that they've constructed. After that we had the pork belly and tuna poke which were tremendous. The smoked pork belly is out of this world and was easily my favorite dish of the entire meal. It is delicate and rich, with one bite you're taken on a flavour journey! From there we ordered the Sashimi lunch which is a wide array of fish served over a bed of rice. No complaints here as everything was perfectly prepared and the fish was buttery and smooth. Miyake is another one of our go-to spots in Portland; one of the most traditional Japanese restaurants we've been to. Two things stand out most about Miyake from other sushi restaurants - the authenticity of the flavors and presentation of meal, meanwhile being creative. Add the ultimate freshness in fish and you've got a 4 star sushi experience. We enjoyed the traditional sashimi and grilled black cod, with their must have miso soup. Also felt a little adventurous and tried their special grilled collar and head of amberjack fish, which was fantastic, buttery and soft. Closed out with an omakase nigiri and ceviche roll which were so flavorful and with not too much truffle oil. I love sushi. And my friend has introduced me to really good sushi. So while he was visiting from PA, we decided to try Miyake to get our sushi fix! This place really does a phenomenal job. I can't tell you how excited I was when I saw the menu. We wanted to sit at the sushi bar but they didn't have any seats available right away. We were hungry so decided not to wait. My friend had a variety of the nigiri selection and one sashimi. I had the yellowtail sashimi and salmon nigiri. We also each got miso soup. Additionally, we got the tekka maki and negi-toro maki. Both were so good. Everything was very fresh and presentation was on point. We will definitely be back to do the omakase. For dessert we had the Creme brûlée (my favorite!!!!). I'm not sure what all the hype is about regarding this place. It was across the street from our hotel so we decided to check it out for lunch. Big mistake. First off, we had two kids and 5 adults so getting seated took forever (around 20 mins?). Then we basically ordered everything off the lunch menu, including the sashimi set, soba noodles, bento box and a few rolls. The seafood was all very fresh, which was expected for the price. I personally ordered the soba noodles. The broth was so bitter, I felt like I was eating some Asian medicine. I've had soba in Asia, and this ain't it. Do not get it. The sushi/sashimi was as good as expected but then we paid the bill and realized it wasn't worth the money. I don't recommend it, unless you've got money growing on your trees. O...M...K...Omakase! Do it!! Long bookmarked before I ever actually intended to come to Maine, I convinced Eric R. that I deserved sushi. I saw Miyake is now open on Sundays, and since we had too much food Saturday on a foodie tour and were going to be drinking too much beer on a brewery tour on Monday, Sunday was the day he said we could go. I did not make reservations because we kept taking afternoon naps which is really unlike me, so I did not have a clue when we would be going to dinner. We walked in around 8:00 and the restaurant closed at 8:30. Our server told us that the most popular way to eat was the 4 menu tasting for $58, which is a great deal. The entire menu is also a la carte, but I asked her about the $75 omakase. She gave me a sampling of what was served that night and everything sounded amazing, so I asked if the restaurant allowed omakase for one person in a party, and she said yes! I got the sparkling yuzu lemonade as my beverage which was fantastic! Eric R. got hot green tea. He ordered a l a carte and the server spaced our our dishes so we could always have food and could share. Eric R. got seaweed salad, demi chirashi (tuna, salmon, salmon belly, lobster, hamachi, amberjack, tamago, snapper, masago, shiitake, maybe another fish for $20-great deal), and the super toro roll (had the essence of truffle). His dishes were delicious as I tried everything. My omakase: Course 1: Yaki Uni: Torched sea urchin with mascarpone and enoki mushroom. This was rich, decadent, and oishi. I normally end my meals with uni as dessert so let's just say this was a big dessert first (the uni was on a tray - no measly portion here!) Course 2: Assorted sashimi. This included lobster, amberjack, fatty salmon, seabass, yellowtail, tuna, snapper, and mackerel. Everything was divine, especially the mackerel and salmon belly. Course 3: Crab chawanmushi with gold leaf. First of all, this will probably be my one and only time eating gold leaf on chawanmushi...so there's that. The ginkgo nut was fresh! Course 4: House-smoked arctic char seared skin side down with yuzu gel and pickled mustard seed. This was interesting. I liked the crispy skin and yuzu gel! Course 5: Maine whelk with anchovy butter. This was also sauteed with yellow pepper. I have rarely eaten whelk and it was definitely unique. The presentation was beautiful in its own shell. Course 6: Seared duck breast with sansho balsamic, yuzu kosho, and caramelized zucchini and potato. This dish was so delicious! The duck was tender and cooked to perfection, and the vegetables were incredibly tasty rather than an afterthought. Course 7: Baby snapper nigiri lightly torched. This was a refreshing bite from the chef. Course 8: Unadon with Maine eel. This was a fun dish, with flavorful local eel on rice with ginger pickle. I thought the yuzu lemonade was so good I also got a refill! Memorable moment: Eric R. asked the server was zuke is and we both answered "marinated" at the same time. She was impressed and told me I should work here. I also got a job offer from Koiso in Maui back in 2013 (see my review) so maybe I worked in a sushi bar in my past life. I came to Miyake during my first visit ever to Portland and it was without a doubt, my favorite meal. Depending on how hungry you are and what you're looking to try, Miyake has a lot of options. With one other person, we opted to share the omakase nigiri ($40) and their 4 course set ($58). Both extremely reasonably priced for the quality and had generous portions. The omakase nigiri came out together on 1 plate which I didn't mind. Although the nigiri lacked a little in flavor compared to other omakases I've tried, the entire selection was extremely fresh. For the 4 courses, we chose the Marinated Salmon, Miso Marinated (4 slices) and Grilled Black Cod, Grilled Duck Breast and the Miyake Farm Pork. A little protein heavy, but I wanted to try a variety. Everything was well balanced and seasoned. The garnishes all paired very well too. We still had a little room so instead of choosing dessert, we decided to order a la carte and try their Super Toro Roll. It was simple but so good! It is a tuna and avocado roll topped with diced medium toro, truffle oil, rayu (chili oil) & scallions. If you like toro, give it a try. The truffle oil is not overpowering. One the best meals I had in Portland. I don't eat sushi but my partners does, said it was the best sushi ever! I had the miso salad, this was so much more than the basic lettuce and dressing. It's was artfully crafted and delicious. I next ordered the swordfish, it was melt in you mouth and out of this world fabulous. Average and Rigid. Quality of the fish wasn't great. Anything not posted on the menu is completely not an option. Example with the Ebi is there was no option to get the fried shrimp head. The Omakase leaves nothing to the chef's creativity and is just presentation of their posted menu. read more

Miyake gets high marks for fresh quality sushi and interesting flavors. Their bento box has a wide selection from sashimi to broccoli rabe. I enjoyed the sashimi and the lobster spring roll. The broccoli and the salmon sashimi were okay and I really didn't like the cold chicken and the fried Arctic char roll. Overall i think I'll be back but will plan on ordering rolls of salmon or tuna which were clearly high quality and delicious. read more

I normally don't leave written reviews but I feel compelled after dining at Miyake tonight. Three of us ordered the Chef's Omakase for $75 dollars starting at 8 pm and did not leave until 10 pm. We sat at the sushi bar and expected a great experience based on the ratings. But 15 minutes between each dish that take less than 3 minutes to eat is brutal after the 4th or 5th dish. The kitchen behavior was pretty gross. Two of the assistant chefs were young guys that sneezed, wiped their noses and faces, and left items all over the sushi bar (such as their glasses and stacks of bowls right in front of our faces) . No gloves or protective gear for their hands. Literally watched one of the chefs wipe his nose then touch the duck that was served to us. We watched the head sushi chef place pieces of raw fish and ginger on a wet a dish towel that he would clean his hands with and then run it under water, and then back to cutting and placing fish on it. I've never seen that before and we're genuinely concerned about getting sick from something like that. It was gross. The food was decent. Genuinely surprised how high this place is rated. Normally an Omakase is a more personal and cared-for experience on behalf of the main chef and the chefs assisting them, but this was very inconsistent and all over the place. The main chef even disappeared for 20 minutes. Just overall a very weird experience and we're hoping we don't get sick. read more
