    Scorpion bowl for two
    Jess B.

Every time I come to Kon I have a great experience. They have a ton of free parking in the parking lot. The entrance and bathrooms are handicap accessible. My boyfriend and I went for hibachi on Valentine's Day. We did have to wait about 20-30 mins for hibachi to start since we got paired with strangers. Once the service started, it was fantastic. We had a reservation so were seated immediately. We each got water and then a scorpion bowl for two. They light the center which is cool and it comes with super long straws which is a fun touch. We got gyoza for the appetizer which is always so good. The dipping sauce is delicious. Hibachi is always so fun. Dinner and a show. The chef loves including everyone. Saki shots, getting the vegetables launched into your mouth, and the onion volcano are all so fun. I always get filet mignon. Hibachi comes with the mini salad and soup to start. Everyone gets two shrimp, rice, noodles, and vegetables, in addition to the chosen protein. It's like dinner theater. It's always a great experience and the food is amazing. I will continue to keep coming back to Kon!

Always great to find a restaurant on a Monday night. We sat in the bar with a great bottle of wine and saw some friends. It was a relaxing and friendly evening. Pad Thai was perfect and Gluten Free!

Plenty of parking and the restaurant had plenty of open tables on a Monday night. I had krazy tuna that went well with wine.

The food is fresh and well made. one star for the owners disregard. They made me a spicy tuna roll that I requested to be gluten. I spoke with the owner about this and he assured me they could do this. It was full of crunchy glutenny bits. When I want back in (take out order) his response was just "sorry" they made me another roll but if I had not noticed I would have been sick for weeks. Also I bit into the avocado and salmon roll to find a hard thing. It ended up being the avocado top. Will not go back.

Super friendly staff! The food was good and you can tell they use fresh ingredients. We did order pick up and it was a smooth process! You get a lot of food with your order. Two of us were able to share the vegetable fried rice and we even had left overs. I also really enjoyed the vegetable sushi! It has cucumber, avocado and asparagus in it! You get six pieces in an order. I'd recommend this place! I would not it may be good to add increased spice level to your order.

I can honestly say that I miss their sushi happy hour, otherwise everything here is just as good as it's always been. The staff is always awesome, my favorite sassy Portland bartenders, Chad is a staple here. His delicious sarcasm pairs well with every plate.

I understand everyone seems to love Kon. I, however, do not. I visited most recently at lunch for a hibachi lunch for 14-ish coworkers. The hostesses made it very clear they could not seat anyone until the entire party was present. When we ended up having 1 less person than they expected, they made it seem like a big deal. The hibachi show is not fun for an introvert. The man attempted to throw rice into everyone's mouth and I was not interested, but he threw the rice ball anyway and it landed on the floor behind me. The bar was filled with strip club go-ers out getting a breath of fresh air, food and another drink. They all seemed to turn around and stare at our group wearing business attire. It seemed to be a very busy place despite not a lot of guests at the time. The phones were ringing off the hook, the hostesses were running around, I'm not exactly sure what was going on behind the scenes.

Mostly Typical hibachi offerings except for the lobster but well done. Fresh Lobster in hibachi style is good but it doesn't stand out for me compared to typical American lobster style. I am sure a few relatives of mine enjoyed it immensely. Lobster done in sit down Chinese restaurant style tastes really good for most people and I think Americans that like lobster but only typically American cuisine would like such a dish as the lobster tends to be fried with green onions and such for exquisite taste and while the preparation might be different, it wouldn't stray too far away from what one may be used to in the States if you aren't a true foodie like I consider myself to be. Elderflower lemonade didn't have much elderflower as expected. Reisling White wine had a nice taste to it. Our chef was very enthusiastic and fun to be around. They are lucky to have him.

Sushi obviously isn't inexpensive, but compared to many places in Portland it's quite reasonably priced if you order non-speciality rolls. The eel avocado roll is especially good and I have also enjoyed the fatty tuna and yellowtail/scallion. I think what makes this place special though is that it appears the owner is heavily involved in the day-to-day operations. I believe he works as a sushi chef sometimes and I've also passed by late at night and seen him cleaning the glass on the front door. The waiters seem genuinely happy to be working there and seem to be friends with each other. They also seem to have strong intra-restaurant culture such as greeting people who walk in the door with the same greetings that I heard when I was in Japan and saying "corner" every time they're rounding a corner with food. The patio outside is delightful. There's a waterfall and the space has the feel of a Japanese tea garden. Really special place. It can feel a bit buzzy/sceney on the weekends, for better or worse. Definitely a special restaurant worth going to.

Every sushi roll was fresh and packed with different fish. We loved the option to sit at the traditional Japanese tables on the floor, it reminded me of when in Japan. It took a bit of time for the sushi to come in, but we did order quite a bit (so worth it) They had a painting on the wall featuring the sushi chefs from 2020 and they told us that the same sushi chefs are still working here! It was very heart warming.

Maybe the lights were a little harshly bright, but otherwise a fine place to dine. We didn't get too many things, as we stopped in more for a finisher for the evening than full meal (we'd come from a party with small foods). We ordered a shoyu ramen and a dragon roll. Interesting note on the dragon roll, it has a sweet potato interior. This led to a distinct flavor from other rolls I've had in the past, and a smooshier texture, but a good roll nonetheless. The ramen was mostly a delight. Sumptuous broth, the egg was not too hard nor soft, and almost all the ingredients were perfect. Which I usually avoid that word because it's too subjective, but it seems to fit here. Major exception is the chashu pork. It was overcooked to the extreme. No other word for it, these dried out circles of meat were thick and chewy, and soaking them in the broth couldn't save them. Sad. Otherwise, some of the best ramen I've had since leaving Japan. The only other note I'd have is I just wanted some tea, and had to order a weird tea concoction to get it. Sometimes you'd just like an oolong tea, nothing fancy. I recommend this restaurant, overall, and hope you enjoy it too.

Mr. Tuna is one of three Open Table Exclusive restaurants in Maine, so most every local Chase Reserve card member uses their twice yearly $150 credit here, which explains my visit. The people watching from the outdoor tables on Middle Street must be some of the best in the city. You could easily sip a glass of sake (the dreamy clouds was...dreamy) while eating a toro maki roll and marveling at the tourists waiting in a two hour Eventide line. But we ordered the lemongrass fried tofu salad, salmon toro sashimi and 3 maki rolls, including the green crab special. Everything tasted fresh and excellent with only Yosaku in the same league for Old Port sushi. Of course Yosaku is much more authentic Japanese than Mr. Tuna, though Mr. Tuna is more fun. Like most trendy Portland restaurants, lunch for two with a couple drinks each is $200 all in (get that Chase card!). Still, this is a huge, inventive menu with a great bar program and is one of the surprisingly better summertime outdoor seating options.
