We only go here for reverse happy hour bc let's face it the ambience of the restaurant doesn't call for full price! Reverse Happy hour starts at 9 pm til close. Usually when you get there after 930 pm there is about a 30 min wait! Worth the wait for the good fresh quality rolls and dishes! I ALWAYS get the S&M roll because those are my initials, haha... No but seriously bc they are the best tasting rolls on the menu! It's got tempura on the outside, and the plate comes out drizzled with eel sauce! YUM. Oh and it's got spicy mayo on top! For apps I also like the sashimi tacos! There's about 4 that come out on an order. The salad with the ginger dressing and Miso soup are also worth trying. I'm feeling really mixed about this place. I'm currently debating on how i want to start this off. Pro's: the decor is gorgeous, plating if wonderful, and the ambience is hip. Con: Pretty much the food is bland and service is kind of shotty. I ordered a bunch of things because I heard good things about this place and a couple of my friends come here apparently. My partner and I ordered the tiger eye, got geisha, the summer maki, stir fry soba, and the pork katsu. The tiger eye along side the geisha was bland as hell. The only thing I could taste for the tiger was cream cheese and maybe a hint of spice at the end, where as the geisha was poorly seasoned and maybe was lost when it was baked. The soba was decent for what it was and the katsu was definitely a hit for my boyfriend. It's most likely the one and only time I'll ever be coming here. read more

One of the longest established Japanese restaurant here in Houston that hasn't closed down yet. I have been here many times before Yelp even existed and I only went here recently as it was pretty close to where my friend was drinking at. It was Saturday night and there's actually a wait for a table of 3. It only lasted about 10 minutes though and we were seated pretty close near the entrance on the left side where there's booths and row of table for 2. The menu has changed a bit but the over all quality is still A-OK, hence the 3 stars rating. This is a restaurant where if you have been there many times, there's really nothing else new to try. I do see where the fact that they have priced themselves at a fair for their sushi. Majority of the rolls are the Americanized rolls that's drenched in various sweet sauce (eel sauce or Japanese mayo). They do have good cocktail drink specials and the house hot sake is also at a good price. I would certainly still come back to this restaurant for the food, but it would only be when a group of friends really wants to go there. The Bobbi Maki roll is a shrimp tempura and avocado roll with salmon, spicy tuna, and unagi sauce on top. The roll was tasty, but the quality of the salmon was not quite there. The spicy tuna was ground, as it usually is, but still had some chewy and stringy ligaments attached (which is strange because I didn't know tuna had ligaments??). This place is huge. My trip to the bathroom was a good quarter of a mile from my table. Boy was I winded by the time I returned! Overall, this place is OK. Something about the sauce compliments with the stuff inside the crabmeat puff. - New York roll, this roll is so simple as well but I don't know why it's so addicting to eat! - Hot Geisha has baked mussels on top with deep fried salmon roll? I think? not really my favorite but it's my boyfriend's favorite :) - Fried ice cream is fluffy haha it was a mouthwatering experience I'd say. Over all great food. We ordered the Apple sake, it was sweet and delicious. Wanted more but we behaved ourselves. The calamari was perfect. Crisp and yummy. For dinner We had the hot stone ginger rice (combination). We also had a couple of the sushi rolls, one was the Magic Mike. All was very delicious! Valet parking was awesome and convenient. I left this restaurant feeling greatly satisfied. We approached the waitress to be seated and the place looked beautiful and cosy. Greeted with a warm smile , we were guided to our seat. The booth seats were really comfy and clean. The menu is filled with a great variety. Soups , salads , bento boxes , noodles , and best off all , the sushi. In a group of 3 , including my wife and I , we ordered the calamari , shrimp ginger rice , and the mango go maki roll. The wait to receive the food was not long at all. It's always a hit & miss when it comes to Miyako, last time I came the salmon roe was extremely salty. Yes I understand salmon roe has a rich salty taste to it but this was beyond what salmon roe is supposed to taste like. I'm pretty sure the chef over salted the roe because the salt literally hurt my tongue from eating it & was close to being inedible. I ordered amaebi, yellow tail, white tuna, squid and salmon roe nigiri. This time I came the salon roe was perfect. Yellow tail was okay. White tuna was not fresh at all but still edible. Ika (squid) was terrible, I love fresh ika nigiri. All good seafood when uncooked and eaten raw has a nice delicate sweet flavor to it, this ika has a old fishy taste to it. Was a bit disappointed. Amaebi was good. Service was good, waitress was attentive & pleasant. I give this place 2 stars, because this restaurant has some redeeming qualities but Miyako has a huge issue when it comes to delivering consistency. It has a good selection of fish compared to other sushi restaurants but once again it's always a hit & miss when it comes to the freshness of the cuts of fish. Would I return to Miyako? Yes. I really like place! The food was good and so was the service. The servers were very attentive and the manager even came by to check on us. The outside doesn't look like much but it's actually pretty nice and cozy inside Chicken wings (3/5)- appeared to be "Thai" wings, very strong taste of basil which was nice but the sauce was a bit too much..? I thought that the wings were ok but not sure if I'd order again Fish tacos (3/5)- I didn't like it but hubby thought it was good. The fish chunks were a thick/big cut Flaming lobster roll (3.5/5)- was pretty decent ok but not sure if I'll order again. The lobster on top was crunchy and gave the roll a nice texture but the taste overall seemed weird like alcohol or something lol. If it wasn't for that I'd give this a 4. The sushi roll paired with garlic butter sauce was actually good Under the sea maki (5/5)- I really like this roll and would definitely order again. It was crunchy and not the crunchy kind that's hard but at the same time not too hot making the sushi all mushy Green tea creme brûlée (5/5)- this was the reason i came here, hehe. Delicious. My daughter and I eat here often. My personal recommendations are the Blood Diamond (wonderful soft flavor, cooked salmon roll topped with raw salmon, chopped pistachios and a truffle honey) or the Chilango Maki (pops with both flavor and spice, topped with jalapeños, strawberries, and crispy shallots), garlic edamame. Other delicious items are their gyoza, crabmeat puffs, any of their noodle or rice dishes, and the yaki gyu niku steak (Japanese BBQ) which is tender and uber flavorful. I have had numerous of their other rolls and those have also been satisfying....but stay away from the more generic ones if you truly want tasty flavors. The chef's specialty rolls offer flavor pairings not often thought if or available at other sushi restaurants. They have daily happy hour from 3-7 and then starting again after 9 which includes $5 mojitos of varying flavors. My favorites are lychee and mango. Several of the apps are $5 each at happy hour and many of the rolls are significantly discounted, but portion sizes are the same. Anyone who I have introduced to Miyako equally loves it and regularly craves going there. I cannot recommend highly enough. Please note that they do get very busy at the Westheimer location after 6ish, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings, and the parking can be tight in that shopping center. One of my favorite casual sushi restaurants to visit. It's not posh, new or hip, it's just a good environment for chowing down on some fairly consistent sushi. My favorites are the New York maki and crunchy maki rolls, and fresh salmon, yellowtail and red snapper sushi or sashimi. If you come during the week, try to make it during happy hour for discounted rolls and appetizers starting at $6. There are drink specials for around $5 as well. I got the lunch Miso Sea Bass and WOW, it was delicious and an amazing size for the $13. It came with miso soup, vegetable tempura and two pieces of California roll. Really good deal. It's by far my favorite Japanese restaurant! They have a happy hour menu almost any time of a day-lunch menu, until 7 pm and after 9 pm menus (if they haven't change it). Food is great and comes out very fast. New York maki, s&m, spicy salmon roll, crunchy make are our favorites! Health freak roll, beef sashimi, and salmon carpaccio are tasty too. Smoked Salmon, kani, tobiko and shrimp sushi are the best! we also tried different soups and noodles - those are on the weak side meaning you can find better ones elsewhere. Drinks are good and cheap! The place has the second location on Kirby, but Westheimer one is better in my opinion. Food is always good but service is a gamble every single time. Most of the servers are good but some of them are slow, absolutely not friendly and look like just want to get rid of you as fast as possible. The new manager (of the assistant of the manager) is rude and looks very new to the service industry. I gave 3 stars only for that manager or assistant (I'm not sure who he is). Hands down, THE BEST tuna tartare ever. It really is my ultimate obsession. I love sharing. I'm a really nice "would like you to have a taste? here, take some!" kind of person. But THIS? You're going to have to get your own. - The Tuna Tartare is really simple yet so GOOD. It's just a tower of freshly chopped tuna & avocado with smelt roe, surrounded by seaweed salad & won ton chips. I always like to have my tuna finely chopped - fits better on the chips. The wasabi cream sauce adds a little oomph to it. MY GOD, what I'd do to have this right now. - Their salad with the sweet house dressing is pretty addicting too. Seriously, my mother would buy containers of their dreamy creamy sauce! - The Flaming Lobster Roll alone is delicious - kani tempura and avocado topped with lobster tempura & crawfish. I'm not a big fan of their "flaming" garlic butter sauce though. It was really bitter & was just.. burnt. Next time, I'll have it without the flame. - The Crunchy Maki - I love. Most sushi places has that boring, non-crunchy but calls it crunchy, kind of crunchy roll. LOL but here, it's top with so much tempura flakes!! It's not overly crunchy because of the soft snow crab and avocado tucked inside. - The Hot Geisha Roll is a good baked roll. It's very creamy & contains my favorite fish; salmon! New York Maki is my go to item. They tend to be soft handed when it comes to adding the siracha & mayo sauce on the roll, so I always ask for extra. The crunchy maki is another one of my favorite rolls. Besides sushi, the Combination Yudon is amazing (to add some zest to your noodles, ask for a side of eel sauce). It is very unfortunate that I'm giving Miyako 2 stars given that once upon a time I loved this place. My first "lunch time" experience was horrible! Not only was the service bad.. I also found a bug in my salad! As I waited for my party of 2, the waitress completely ignored me for any appetizers and when I finally ordered they took forever to bring out my appetizer. For lunch, I ordered a bento box which included 2 salmon and 2 tuna sashimi slices. I asked the waitress if I could have tuna only. She shook her head no, then responded "well yes but with an additional replacement fee" which really bothered me. What's the problem with saying yes and then my options. We came here with our friends and ordered around 7 dishes of sushi, 2 dishes of basil chicken wings, 2 dishes of okonomiyaki, and one bowl of soba. Truth to be told, I have experienced better in some other places like Hokaido and Oba Japanese Cuisine. Fish is not fresh enough and sauce seems to be too soggy. Place is dark and too noisy as well. Happy hour is from 3-7pm and then again at 9pm. It is worth it to go during happy hour. The size of the food is the same, just at a significantly lower price. They also have drinks in the happy hours specials that are not offered during regular hours. The parking lot for this establishment does get pretty crowded. If you can get there early I do recommend you do so. Or just Lyft there to make it easier. A lot of the parking spots are specially designated for certain shops and that makes parking more scarce for miyako. Waited outside in the heat 30mins then we finally went in to see what was taking so long after being told 20 mins and watching multiple families be seated, they said "we called you 3 times" I showed them my call log because I never received a call, they said "you have to wait longer" I left.
