Went to Miyuki's today for lunch - first time back in a long time due to Covid. Our lunch was incredible!! We shared an order of edaname and both had bento boxes with tempura and the California roll - one had sashimi as the third dish and the other gyoza. Miyuki is my mother's middle name and she was born in Watsonville. She unexpectedly passed away this year and while going through her things, my dad found a t shirt from here. So, I yelped them and decided to reach out to see if they had any more shirts. I got a hold of one of the owners, and we exchanged emails, then texts back and forth. I wanted to order swag for my family and he was more than accommodating. I've never dined here, and I've only visited the area when I was a kid a couple of times since most of my extended family has moved away, but it's a sentimental thing to have a hoodie with my mom's name and birthplace to wear proudly around town. My brother was wearing a shirt in San Diego and someone recognized the restaurant so it must be good! We got a dragon roll as well which was really good. I also got an oyster shot which you can't find anywhere in the Santa Cruz county at least that I know of . Pros: They have really good scallops!! And nice staff Cons: their rainbow roll doesn't have crab meat in it and it doesn't say this on the menu. Very welcoming and crowded when we walked in. Service: Our server was as nice as could be, but the food took a really long time to come out. That's why I did 4 stars instead of 5. We ordered nigiri and it came out after our rolls so we just asked to cancel it. Food: The food was yummy. We started with the tataki seared albacore special which had really good seasoning! Only thing is I wish the fish was a little thinner because it was kind of a mouthful eating a whole piece. Then we got two rolls: a shrimp tempura roll and a Gina roll. We got them both with soy wraps which were lime green in color- never seen them green! Adorable and yummy! The rolls tasted very fresh. We went on a trip to Aptos and surprisingly found a good sushi restaurant. The low stars that some people give doesn't actually give justice as the sushi, sashimi and the nigiri were all fresh and all delicious for a good price too. The soups were all good too. After being at the fairgrounds all afternoon, we were looking for a nice place to relax for dinner. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that this place had a good sized outdoor area as well as an open dining room. Pros: I was happy that all the staff were wearing masks and that we managed to come in between waves of people. Because as soon as we were seated the almost empty dining room was full to capacity in just a few minutes. They served us pretty quickly and I like that the staff were very attentive. It is clear they work well as a team as few different staff people came to check on us. The fish was fresh and tasted great. Their portions are a nice size and seemed right on for the prices. Cons: My partner and his friend came and joined us midway through the meal and even though the staff were able to accommodate our party of five without much trouble, they unfortunately forgot to help us with the additional food we requested. I'm sorry we didn't say anything to them sooner because it became apparent that they had likely forgotten to make the add on order. Even after they acknowledged that we were still waiting, it took quite a bit longer until the food arrived. Overall, everything tasted great but the experience left us all wanting more. I accept that we're all human so I wouldn't write them off right away. I would have taken a free dessert for the extra long wait or even a little discount on our meal. Had a great meal here today! Restaurant was recently renovated at it looks great! Very clean. Had a seafood salad that was dressed with a tasty and lite ponzu dressing and included plenty of tuna, snapper, and salmon sashimi as well as some shrimp and squid. The eggplant in the roll was hard not cooked aldente as should be. It was not easy to pull each section apart due to rice stickiness. I spent a lot of money for my to go meal. Miyuki's was the highlight of our relaxing day off to enjoy both our birthdays. Miyuki-san served up some delicious fare right in front of our eyes and we even got to "kanpai" with him which made me so happy... I met Miyuki-san a couple Obon Matsuris ago and I've been meaning to try out his spot for 2 years now and I finally got to make out to Watsonville. He served us some refreshing sunomono cucumber salad topped with squid shrimp which got our juices flowing. The unagi, octopus and amaebi (my fave) were delicious and prepared beautifully, my gentleman friend and I even finished all of the sweet prawn's fried head, literally! Miyuki's surprised us with some delicious chawan-mushi which are probably in my top ten of favorite Japanese dishes. Steamed to perfection but I've never had one like this... it was stuffed literally with all kinds of goodies like shrimp, unagi, edamame, spinach, fish and more... I was in food heaven. It was so hot and I have a cat's toungue and I still devoured mine before my gentleman friend touched his... it was too hot. The gyoza were the perfect and bite size. Pure meat and no extra fillers... spot on and went obviously well with the gyoza tare. Oyster shooters... probably the tastiest that I have ever experienced. I could probably have a dozen on my own and I just might the next time I visit. Fresh little oyster (perfect size), uzura no tamaga (quail egg), green onions, ponzu (citrus soy) topped with what looked like Momiji Oroshi or spiced grated daikon. So lovely! We ordered the Tatsuage because fried chicken Japanese style is one of my favorite foods of all time and it was amazing. We enjoyed a cold Kirin during our meal that was good but not as good as all the food around us. We finished with not one but two bowls of ice cream... Rainbow Sherbet and Cherries Jubilee both from Marianne's one of the best ice cream parlors ever!. He went all out and really made us feel at home. Thank you Miyuki-san! For apps we love the beef negi, squid, and seaweed salad. Oh- and the scalloped dynamite is a must try. Anytime I go for sushi I have to grab tamago nigiri, it's great here!
