    Calamari
    Andrea E.

This spot is just wow! So good! I usually stay in town for sushi but I wanted to get out of Watsonville and we ended up here. The service was great, we went during dinner and it was busy but our server took care of us and the food came out pretty quickly. We got 2 appetizers, the Jalapeño popper and the calamari. Both were amazing! The poppers were nice and full and the calamari had the perfect crunch. The food was so good I didn't get the chance to take pictures of the two rolls we ordered. The restaurant itself was very nice as well and they offered indoor and outdoor seating. Overall, this spot was awesome! I will definitely come back to try more of their menu.

Found this gem on Yelp. So glad we found it. Friendly service and a chill atmosphere. There's a patio, so you can bring your dog . They have a HUGE menu, but everything we had was so good. Started with the calamari appetizer, the batter was so crunchy and the sauces were such a good compliment. We had three rolls, all good- but truly loved the Cowboy Bebop roll. It had coconut and nuts. Wasn't sure, but it worked so well!! Can't wait to go back and work through the menu!

Had a nice lunch here at Akira Aptos. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious. Sat outside on the patio on an overcast weekday. Had some hot sake and a couple draft Sapporos while ordering the two item Bento Box of Grilled Salmon & Spicy Tuna Rolls. Best bento box I've had in a while with the salad and dressing, rice, and edamame! Our server was the co-owner and she was super nice and friendly. Definitely recommend. Thank you!

Recently went to their location in Santa Cruz and had to try out this location too. We went for lunch on a Saturday, it wasn't too busy. The hostess allowed us to choose the table we wanted to sit at. They have indoor and outdoor seating. It was unfortunately too cold to sit outside, but they have a decently sized patio. It is located in a shopping center with plenty of parking too. The restaurant itself is very nice and clean. I of course had to get their edamame as a starter. Can't ever go wrong with some edamame! We tried their three-item lunch bento box which we shared among two of us. The bento box came with miso soup, salad, and rice. We chose to add chicken katsu, grilled salmon, and their cali roll. The only new item we tried was the salmon which was delicious, as was everything else. It was $25 for the lunch bento. The portions are of course smaller, but it was still plenty for both of us. The service was good, the staff were all friendly, but our food did take a bit to come out. However, no complaints and completely understandable! Definitely recommend!

Akira has been a consistent part of my dining experience for years, starting with the original location off Morrissey in Santa Cruz. I frequented that spot often during the lunch hour, and what always stood out to me was the value. The lunch specials offered a balanced variety with thoughtful combinations, making it both affordable and enjoyable. Their sushi menu was well crafted, with each roll offering something distinct. Ordering never felt routine because the options had personality and intention behind them. I've also brought my nephews along on several visits. Whether it was chicken teriyaki or a selection of other dishes, the meals were always well received. The flavors are approachable yet satisfying and clearly made with care. I've sat down many times myself, ordered sushi and sake, and had a great experience every time. The quality has always been there. In recent years, my visits have mostly been to the Aptos location, where I'll often pick up a few pieces of nigiri to go for my dad on the weekends. Every phone call is met with a warm and attentive voice. The staff are consistently professional, friendly, and efficient. When I bring the food home, my dad immediately notices the quality. He always comments on how fresh and well made it is, and he looks forward to it each time. That kind of consistency is rare. The Aptos location, in particular, deserves recognition. The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, with a nicely arranged bar and plenty of inviting seating. There is a quiet energy to the space, one that makes people stay and enjoy themselves. Each time I step inside, I hear other guests talking about how much they enjoy it, and the room is full of genuine conversation and laughter. I've recommended Akira to many people over the years and I stand by that recommendation. All of their locations have something to offer, but the Aptos restaurant has a warmth and sincerity that's hard to find. It is a place run by people who take pride in their work and who truly care about their customers. That alone is worth returning for.

Top roll: Cowboy Beebop Bottom roll: Zen Fusion Both incredible!
    Melissa V.

I was so impressed with the special rolls here!! I ordered my sushi to-go, since it was a sunny day and great to sit by the beach and eat. I ordered the Cowboy Beebop, which included tempura unagi, cream cheese, fried garlic, mango, avocado, toasted sweet coconut, nuts, honey, and unagi sauce, plus I added lemon slices. It was so incredible flavorful and fresh, it has to be my new favorite roll, like anywhere. I also ordered the Zen Fusion, since I love a baked roll! It had avocado, mango, nuts, topped with shiro maguro, basil aioli, unagi sauce, and green onion, and baked to perfection. The savory, indulgent roll was a lovely compliment to the lighter, fresh one. While I was only inside for a moment to pick up my food, the service was so attentive and friendly, and made sure I had everything I needed. I can't wait to come back!

Lunch bento. The salad dressing is amazing!

A nice little modern, sushi joint with a huge menu. Hubby and I went for a cute lunch date. This place was recommended to us and it was warm enough to sit outside. Dog-friendly patio. I love a good bento box and their's was solid. The California rolls and chicken teriyaki were good, but the tonkatsu was super dry. I'd skip that. I also tried their Cadillac roll with steak. It was huge, but I wouldn't order it again. The best part of the meal was the salad dressing. I kid you not. It was the best Japanese salad dressing I've ever had. It's so good, they even bottle it! It was $9, but I had to have it. We'll be back to try more rolls.

For either of these, you get thick cuts of buttery melt-in-your-mouth fresh salmon, toro (tuna belly), hamachi. There were other cuts of fish but these truly stood out. For such premium cuts, it's a pretty good deal! Their tamago/egg was tasty and sweet - delicious. The rice itself could use a bit more flavor, but the rolls, on the other hand, were so deliciously flavorful! Overall, the sauces on all the rolls delivered excellent flavor. Not too heavy, salty, or spicy. Great balance and ratio of fish : rice : sauce. the ROLLS we got: - Magic Dragon - This is like a spicier dragon. Great combo of spicy and sweet. Yum! - Trio (from the special menu) - A lighter, all-protein option with no rice. Again, quality buttery salmon right here. - Dr. Woo's - yellowtail inside with albacore outside, great combo with spicy mayo - Volcano roll - spicy tuna topped with seared salmon - like when salmon gets slightly seared, it absolutely is the best! All the rolls were great, but the Magic Dragon and Volcano Roll were my favorites because their flavor profiles were chefs kiss. The staff was incredibly nice and generous. This local establishment has been a staple here for years! Their menu is massive, and while the names of the rolls could be more straightforward, their website has pictures, which helps! Yet when you pay at check-out, the tip amount defaults to 18% (yes, a default 18% tip at a fast-casual restaurant), with the alternatives being 20%, 25%, or custom. The lone employee who made eye contact with us was nice, but again--this is a fast-casual restaurant! The edamame was soft and unseasoned. The only condiment on the table was soy sauce (no low-sodium options available) and sushi rolls do not come with wasabi nor ginger. "Bento boxes" are essentially combo meals. When we sent the first edamame back because it was mushy, we received another bowl of flaccid beans back moments later. I suspect they are steamed in bulk, possibly in a bag in a microwave. My gripe with this place that finally pushed me to publish this review was the fried soft shell crab roll. PLEASE, for the love of cuisine, spare yourself from this roll. The crab is fried harder than a well-done Kentucky fried chicken leg, with a sweet sauce smeared over the top to distract from the flavorlessness of the contents. To add insult to injury, one piece had unfurled when this landed at our table. I have never, ever received a deconstructed sushi roll that was not immediately replaced. A minor aesthetic inconvenience for me; but a good illustration of the lack of concern for attention to detail here. I did not enjoy any part of this meal, which cost over $100. My biggest takeaway from this dinner is to never take Reddit reviews of Santa Cruz restaurants seriously again. Of course, nobody asked how my food was.

We were surprised to see both Japanese and Chinese cuisine menus. When our server asked us which menus we wanted to order from, we picked both - just because we wanted to see what kind of food they have. We ordered: 3 Ko Ramen Pork Tonkatsu Five Cracker Roll Agedashi Tofu Garlic Edamame Fresh Salmon Nigiri We are very surprised by how big the portions are. We ordered a lot of food thinking about the other Japanese restaurants we have been to - they have pretty small portions. Not here! The portions are huge! I brought both my boys in their early 20s with me. These two can eat more than I have ever seen anyone eat, and we still couldn't finish everything. We had a lot of leftovers. All the food was wonderful. The Ko ramen is amazing!!! All our food was so fresh and tasted really good. The outside of the building is deceptively small-looking. The place has a lot of seating inside and has a party room as well. Despite the number of diners around us, it didn't sound loud at all, in fact we were able to speak in a very normal indoor volume and we could hear each other perfectly. We found ample parking in the back of the building. No parking fees/meters. Next time we will try the Chinese food too. For now, the Japanese food i would definitely recommend. Will update review after we try the Chinese food. Their prices are really good! They also have a discounted menu of 4 different offerings for students M-F I believe 12pm to 2pm. They replied with a genuine "enjoy" to each of my "thank-you's", and also spoke very kindly and gave great service to the considerably under-spoken guy at the booth next to mine. Con: The place is old as dirt and needs to be gutted. I don't think it was 'sticky' tablecloth dirty, but I was pleasantly surprised that the bathroom was very clean and tidied. The smell when I entered the restaurant quickly let me know that something was wrong with the sewer lines, or something. Like, I almost left before anyone saw me stroll into the empty place, ok? There was a gal who was walking in to scope the place out for she and her friends as I was leaving. She didn't stay. I was waiting for an Uber as she hightailed it back to her car declaring "Well, I guess I haven't been there in a while..." into her phone. Overall, I'm glad I stayed to give an old place a new try for the first time in... 15 years? Not surprised that all of the orders were being picked up by DoorDash, etc, but also not surprised at how many orders were being pickup up, one after another. I need tempura and rooty beer this week. Not sure if I'd ever be brave enough to give their sushi menu a try, though.

I would've given this place 5 stars in the past, but their recent employees' service is extremely, extremely poor. Due to other responsibilities, I am often arriving about 30mins before close. There have been several occasions where they are cleaning up already, even 30mins before closing time. This leads to certain items being cleaned up/removed from display before they close, & their go to answer is that "they dont have anymore available for the day." It happens most often with the avocado, although it can also be other ingredients. This happens too often to be true, & on a few occasions, Ive had an employee go to the back & retrieve a small amount of avocado to add to my poke bowl, which is the appropriate action to take, but demonstrates 1. theyre not actually out & are being dishonest with customers & 2. they are cleaning things up & putting them away before it's an appropriate time to do so. Additionally, there was a time my fiancé & I arrived at 6:30pm & the worker helping us was so eager to close that as they rung us up they kept asking, "anything else? Anything else?" to rush us out of the restaurant. We both felt rushed & pressured, & when they asked "anything else?" & my fiancé went to look at the drinks to consider getting one, she continued to ask "anything else?" multiple times over before he even had a chance to look at what was available. He never even had a chance to look at what was available because she wanted to rush us out. This service is extremely dissatisfying, dishonest, & lacks integrity. From someone who comes once a week for years, the service has significantly gone downhill, & I do hope this is addressed in the future by leadership.
