Walked by this restaurant many times when going to our favorite grocery store (Lowes Foods) next door and finally decided to try it out for lunch before shopping. We were promptly greeted upon entering and shown to our table. The restaurant was about 75% full of other patrons and the dining room was clean and comfortable. Along with regular tables, there was limited seating at the sushi bar. As we began looking over the menu, our server made us aware of the lunch specials on the back page, which was greatly appreciated. I went with the Teriyaki Beef and my wife had the Hibachi Chicken. I chose the side salad with the house ginger dressing and my wife had the miso soup. Both of us went with white rice. Our sides came out pretty quick, and once we finished our sides, our entrees came out like clockwork. The Teriyaki Beef with accompanying vegetables tasted great, but I felt the portion size of both could have been larger. Still, it was a good value. Now, the portion size of the Hibachi Chicken with vegetables was much better, and it may be my choice next time. I want to mention that the sushi I saw being delivered to other tables looked pretty amazing, so the Hibachi Chicken may have to wait. Service was excellent throughout our visit. The only suggestion would be some soft background authentic Japanese music to add to the experience. read more

I'm so surprised how this place has such good reviews. I came back to see if maybe it was an isolated bad experience but it was still pretty bad. Their tuna is not fresh, period. They also use the tiniest portions of fish on the special rolls which really bothers me. Maybe their non sushi dishes are better, I won't be back to find out. read more

We were looking for good sushi while visiting family in NC, and my sister recommended Mizu Japanese Restaurant. Located in a large shopping plaza with tons of parking. We got there almost 2 hours before closing and it was packed! The service was quick and precise, and they had a wide variety of specialty rolls, entrees, drinks, and Sake. The sushi bar visible from each seat. The chairs were comfortable and easily accessible, it had a TV that was playing basketball at the time, and also music playing in the background. I tried this sushi place as a recommendation by a coworker and they did not miss with this one! Mizu is located in an unassuming shopping center in Winston Salem. My husband and I came here on a weekend for lunch and were seated immediately. I ordered a bento box from their lunch menu. It came with a California roll, shrimp shumai, shrimp & veggie tempura, and another entree choice listed from the menu (I picked chicken teriyaki). The bento box also came with your choice of ride and soup or salad. My husband ordered a spicy tuna roll along with his meal for an appetizer. The service here was incredibly fast. I received my salad within 2 minutes of ordering, the spicy tuna roll within 5 minutes, and my whole bento box in less than 10 minutes. Not only was everything fast, but it tasted delicious and fresh. The server also made sure to keep our water glasses filled. I can't say enough good things about this place. It's small and shared parking lot in a busy plaza. Not very practical for a walker or wheelchair. Seats were very uncomfortable. They're hard and made of cheap wood. There aren't any booths and the chairs didnt have arms so getting up was a struggle. Staff was friendly. I got the chicken pad Thai. It was very tangy. Chicken tasted boiled. It's a simple, straightforward place that delivers decent reasonably priced food which probably won't blow your mind but will be reliable and consistent. Just like "Chinese restaurants" typically serve "Americanized Chinese" food, this place serves more "Americanized Japanese" food rather than truly authentic Japanese food. For this area it's in line with what you'd typically expect. Service is prompt and very attentive and wait time is minimal. They also carry Asahi so that's automatic kudos from me as well. The place and decor is nothing particularly special or unique but that's ok. Ambience is in line with what the restaurant is trying to be. We've been craving sushi for a minute. Heard people raving about Mizu, so decided to give them a try. 99.5 sanitation grade! We tried three different types of sushi; California Roll, Crispy Tuna Roll, and the Chicken Tempura Roll. Each were great! They have a huge selection to choose from. We also had the appetizer Lettuce Wraps. I really liked the hot sauce for those, they put it on the side. I also tried a side salad. The salad was fresh and crisp and I enjoyed the creamy ginger dressing. My son had the Kid's Hibachi Chicken. Great portion size! He also got to choose between soup or salad and white or brown rice. Veggies were served with his, as well. The hibachi sauce was delicious! My husband tried the Gyoza Dumplings and said they were very good. We will go back for sure. Glad we tried it out. I cannot say enough positive things about this establishment. I have been coming here for years, and this is some of the best sushi I have ever had, and it is located here in my hometown, what a diamond! The staff is always courteous and friendly, ensuring you have what you need and checking in on you repeatedly. The sushi is always good, as well as the hibachi. I primarily get sushi when I come here because it is so good, but I have stray away and gotten hibachi before, and it was delicious as well, however their sushi trumps everything else on the menu. I usually start off with some sort of appetizer here, and this time I got the Japanese spring rolls, which were some of the best spring rolls I have had before. They were adequately filled and fried to perfection. I am also always impressed with their sanitation rating, as it is always a 98 or greater. I cannot recommend this place enough. There is ample parking, and the restaurant is pretty big, so no need to make reservations. Wow, 8 years between visits! Based on the meal I had, it will be even longer if at all, before the next one. The interior remains pretty much unchanged, crowded with tables, very low lighting, a feeling of closeness. I ordered the Shrimp and Filet Hibachi Combo with fried rice and a salad with ginger dressing - cost comes in at $22.25. The only item that was even close to the quality found at similar restaurants in the immediate area was the filet - not overcooked, with a decent amount of flavor. The shrimp were overcooked dreadfully, tough and chew, no freshness. Both the meat items were very small in quantity, the plate was mostly grilled vegetables and a bowl of fried rice. The vegetables were not bad, just not close to WOW worthy! One of the most disappointing items was the salad. I had really enjoyed the house made ginger dressing on previous, and considered it among the very best in the area. But the one I was served on this visit was weak and watery. In addition the lettuce in the salad was in large pieces, hard to eat unless you recut. And finally, the rice was clumpy and lacked the moist texture the Japanese fried rice is known for. This restaurant is phenomenal. I have been here around 10 times now and have not been disappointed. The food is amazing, and the service is so fast it is almost unbelievable. It takes maybe 10-15 minutes for a takeout order on any day at any time and for dining in they always seem to have just enough space even when they are slammed. Our order was taken quickly and ready in a few minutes. The play is cozy and intimate. Perfect for a date night or to eat solo. They can accommodate larger groups but you may have to wait a bit. The staff is always very friendly and pleasant . Today my daughter got two different sushi rolls as their sushi is always on point and definitely in the top 5 of Winston. My wife and I got the Beef Negimaki, which is tender, thinly sliced beef rolled with scallions in the center and a dark soy type sauce. This is one of our favorite appetizers and hard to find around town. We also got the chicken teriyaki with white rice. The chicken is tender and mixed with mushrooms, zucchini and broccoli in a teriyaki sauce that is not salty like others. Came in for lunch with my sister and tried their lunch specials. Wow what a STEAL for the prices. I ordered the sushi and sashimi combo for only $20 and got a salad with ginger dressing. The sashimi was surprisingly pretty fresh, not frozen tasting. Salmon was my favorite. Also ordered the yellowtail jalapeño appetizer it was pretty spicy and flavorful! I recommend trying the soft shell crab and the bento boxes if you come in for lunch! I'm curious about their specialty rolls so I will be coming back. The service was fast and attentive! I have to be honest, I used to love Mizu. They were always elite to me with their low-lit lights, real chop sticks, and lovely food presentations. A true hidden gem with a great atmosphere. It has always felt like a step up from your average Japanese restaurant. Although the atmosphere hasn't changed, I have been twice since they re-opened from Covid and it's just not hitting the same for me. Service was good and not too busy. I just am not digging on some of the flavors. We had the chicken fried rice, and didn't love it. It had a unique, almost sweet smokey bbq flavor to me. Just not my preference. I also had the wonton soup, which was okay, but again, I kept tasting something tasted off. I had a asparagus avocado cucumber roll and it was okay, but lacking compared to similar rolls I order elsewhere. Very bland. Maybe not the freshest veggies. My husband also didn't love the California roll. He's not a fan of big bite rolls (and usually California roll is small) but this one was rolled loosely and hard to get in one bite. I personally wouldn't re-order any of those dishes. I hesitated to write a downer review, but after 2 times I wanted to give an update. We had eaten at Mizu in the past and had a better experience than we did last night. We ordered takeout- first of all, as far as covid precautions go, Mizu is killing it. I would say they handle it the best we have seen. You can eat from here and feel really safe in that regard because they have it on lock, firstly they are only doing takeout still and you do not even get past the threshold, your food is there and ready to go, masked, gloved, the whole 9. However, our food wasn't great this time. We got the treasure island appetizer- probably the best thing in the entire order, yet it was really dry. Whether this was someone different preparing the food or they were running low on condiments- across the board all of our food was underdressed, including the treasure island. I wanted a good 50% more sauce on it. We got the tempura dinner which came with some white rice- very generous amount of shrimp tempura, very skimpy amount of tempura veggies. The sauce that came with it, I was so excited because they gave us a huge container of it... only to taste it and realize something had to be missing. Usually tempura sauce has an acidic note- this was extremely flat tasting, like soy sauce and miso broth, that's it. Very disappointing. We also got a hamachi Kama- my husband isn't too into this dish but every now and then I like this. It's basically a fishes collarbone which is usually extremely tender and delicious... mine was dry... dry... dry. I had a few choice delicious bits very close to the bone but for the most part this was basically fish leather and a real let down. We got four rolls- the castle, the snow roll, the gold dragon and the spicy salmon. The spicy salmon, just a basic roll, they really did this one right. Very generously filled, very nice, probably the best basic roll I have had in the area. The castle roll, this is a fried roll... I was expecting a tempura coating, instead it's a panko coating which was very... dry. See the theme here? Dry. And bland. And very sparse on the sauces that would've been the saving grace. The gold dragon- this was a nice roll, it had some mango on it, eel and avocado inside, again super cheap on the sauces and there was an odd flavor to this one that I couldn't pinpoint but didn't really want, like an herbal note but it ruined the bite for me. Finally, the snow roll- very pretty, very... dry. And bland. And under sauced. Across the board- the theme of this meal was dry and bland. We spent $88 and were pretty bummed, having had Mizu before we expected better. Everything looked really nice and pretty but as far as flavor goes it was a real swing and miss. Three stars because the food quality was nice, we got what we ordered, we didn't get sick, the portions were fair but overall this was not a great meal. read more
