First time back to crown king in 20 years. Ate breakfast at mjs Cafe. Waitress, was happy to see us and got every detail of our order. Kitchen made one of the best chicken fried steaks I've ever had. We had a large group and were accommodated quickly. Definitely going back. Thanks guys!

I had the great pleasure of finally getting to stop in at MJ's cafe after a Jeep run on Crown King. My husband has been talking up this cafe and the amazing burgers they offer for years. This cafe is located inside the saloon at the back and we were lucky enough to find a table big enough fir our group 11. The place is small, but everyone there is so friendly and welcoming. There menu is on a stand as you enter. They don't let you split checks so make sure you have cash or hit the ATM in the saloon to be able to divvy up the bill. My girls opted for the kids chicken strips, kids hot dog, and my hubby got the bacon cheeseburger. I saw fried pickles and could not resist. All the food was delicious but I have to say the fried pickles were the best. If you go to Crown King you should definitely stop in.

The works burger - jalapeños, green chili, bacon, cheese lettuce onion, tomato.

Good food. Worth the trip up there. Very nice and friendly and attentive worker. We ate on the deck where dogs were allowed.

There's something comfortably out of time about the place. The Grotto is a model of consistency. Nice, energetic staff, a good overall vibe, vintage concert posters lining the walls, and a playlist that is basically the Great American Pop/Rock Songbook. Nothing particularly complicated here. They just know what works. My go-to is the "Famous Chicken Salad Sandwich." I've had one hundred of these sandwiches by now (lol), and not one has ever been off. The menu is expansive, and in nearly a decade I've never had anything that missed. That kind of consistency is harder to find than it should be. The menu is priced accordingly, too, which makes The Grotto one of those increasingly rare joints that doesn't seem hell-bent on robbery. If you happen to run into the owner, Mike, he's a fun guy, a music historian, a Barry Goldwater geek, and apparently has no problem hitting on your woman right in front of you. (lol) The Grotto is a nice respite from the cowboy, biker, gift-shop vibe that has become the town of Cave Creek. It's a little bit of Laurel Canyon hiding out in the middle of Yeehaw country.

Food was fresh and seasoned well. The latte was delicious too…read more The layout of the tables and seating is well thought out and the decor on the walls is fun to check out.
