Fish Fry Friday! There is no where else you are going to want to go in Wisconsin for Fish Fry! Every time I am in area, I make sure to go to MJ Stevens for Fish Fry. Family owned business. My extended family has been going here for years. Lots of main dining seating, basement seating - you can book parties down there. Also there is a really nice outdoor area in the warmer months. OK Fish fry, you can get 2, 4, 6 piece dinners that comes with super delish cole slaw, waffle fries and a piece of buttered marbled bread. Was there last Friday for the fish fry. Slight wait but did get a seat at the bar. Drinks were fairly priced too. After only 20 -25 minutes got our table. The wait staff was fast and friendly. The fish was excellent, got the 2 piece and had to take one piece home. My wife got the one piece and she even gave me a small piece. Even though they were crowded we didn't feel rushed. Stopped at this place on my way home from Hartford to L.A. Actually saw the place off the side of the freeway and decided to try it out before I went back. Pretty nice looking place. Looks like an English pub on the inside, a bunch of beers on tap, all wood decor, and a bunch of stained glass windows.. I had the Reuben sandwich, which consisted of corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and thousand island dressing. It came on rye bread. Was actually really good. Also tried a cup of beef vegetable soup which you could tell was homemade. All in all, this joint was bumping at lunch time. The service was great. The fried shrimp with my ribs and shrimp were tasty; lightly breaded and fried to perfection. The ribs were another story. I tried the Memphis rub. Not what it used to be. Service was S.L.O.W. and not busy during our visit. Seafood Skins was a family favorite until this visit- skins were over cooked, burnt on bottom, had cheap "seafood" like fake crab and old tiny scallops. Burger was tasteless and greasy, also under cooked. And the final straw- no more waffle fries! So disappointing overall. Will not return this previously family favorite place. Been there for dinner quite a few times and everything was excellent. Always wanted to go for brunch and finally got to for my birthday and was so happy I did. Wish I could give zero stars. Made a reservation for 7:15, arrived and stood at the hostess stand for 10 minutes waiting. Finally found the hostess talking to other employees in the bar area. Was finally seated and waited again for server to come. Ordered two dr peppers and was told 30 minutes later they were out, but was still charged for them. Got salads and soup before drinks even came. Every time we asked for refills etc we did not receive them. Ended up waiting an hour and 20 minutes for our food when we were the only table in the whole bar area. When it arrived it was cold and flavorless. Will not be coming back but I doubt the restaurant will even be open much longer to go back to. read more

This place always has great food, I have never had terrible service or a bad meal. Just be cautious there is ALWAYS a wait, and sometimes it seems like you are waiting and there are plenty of empty tables.. Most likely because people have made reservations and have not arrived or made different plans. The steak is always cooked to perfection, and the fish fry on Friday nights is also a winner. For years I've been hearing about MJ Stevens and how they are one of the best Fish Fry's in the area, so me and my girlfriend decided to finally see what all the hype was about. We arrived and immediately I found the location and outside signage to be very cozy and inviting. We were told that it would be a 25-30 minute way but the restaurant has a very nice outdoor Bar/Seating area. They also utilize an intercom system so it's very easy to hear when your name is called for a table. The amount of time we waited was perfect, as I had an old fashioned at the bar and then the table was ready. We both got the 4 piece fish fry which costs around 20 dollars which I thought was pricey but boy was I surprised by the portions, 4 large pieces of fish, fries, bread and coleslaw. The fish isn't "generic" breaded cod that you get at some places, it has a very unique taste and you can see the seasoning on it. Overall I enjoyed the entire experience and I'm my opinion this is the best fish fry in Washington county. read more

I have been coming here since we moved to the area in 2000. We had our rehearsal dinner here in 2005. Everything we have ever eaten here has been great. The owner still remembers us by name every time we come. I can't say enough about the Friday fish fry. In my 25 years living in Wisconsin, this is without a doubt the best fish fry in the state. Thick pieces of fish with the breading dusted with Italian herbs. Never greasy, always perfect. Get there early, as the wait can be long. But trust me, it is worth the wait. And here is the best tip of all. Always get the 4 piece. 2 pieces of fish is enough for most folks ( like me), but for a couple bucks more, get the 4 and enjoy the other 2 pieces for breakfast or lunch on Saturday! Can't say enough how good the food is and how great the staff is. I am a fan for life of MJ Stevens. read more

Good fish but very busy. Service was decent but slow due to Friday volume for food. Fish is worth it. Specific to the COVID 19 take out, I was pretty disappointed. I'm not a germaphobe but the amount of people in the restaurant Friday 3/27 was disappointing. I work in healthcare and am fairly careful about exposure during this time and I counted 21 people in the bar area and about another 15-18 people waiting down the hall and in the foyer. People did the best they could to do social distancing but it really didn't even come close to the spirit of the protocol. Guessing they got behind and overwhelmed but someone should have been out there advising people to wait in their cars or opening up the dining area for more spacing. There was one person working to get food to people. It was uncomfortable. I'll prob be back after the virus scare is over but I'll prob avoid this place until the virus concerns are over. read more

Me thinks this place has the bestest fish fry in all of WI and that is saying something. Long time Wisconsin restaurant that is a favorite among the locals. Best Fish Fry Ever! I have been going to this place for many years and they have never disappointed me yet. I tend to visit this place more so in the Summer.... Reason why? It's a long hike for me, and there is always a long wait time for the Fish Fry, but they have a gigantic beer garden with a full bar, fire pits & live band playing. So this is a nice way to make time fly by while waiting on your table. What I love about the fish is the large flaky pieces with perfect breading (not greasy at all). The only downside is they do not serve potato pancakes :( If you are a bar fly like myself, you have the option to sit at the bar and enjoy a meal. Every item on the menu is a winner. Stopped in here on the way back from Eagle River to the airport. Actually Yelped this place first, but the reviews are way off. We got there and sat at the bar. We patiently patiently waited for over 5 minutes just to get menus. Once we got menus then we waited still too even order. We noticed that they were busy but the server clearly served drinking customers first. Then another couple came and sat next to us. Another server came and asked us who was first. We indicated it was us, but she said "Can I get drinks for these other people first?" Are you kidding me?!?!? That was it . We waited 15 minutes and hadn't ordered yet, but then they catered to drinking customers first. We promptly left. They had crappy fattening food anyhow, so I was relieved to go. A recent visit home had my family and I stopping in late for Friday Night Fish Fry. This place was packed for 8:00 pm. With it's well appointed old-world charm and friendly staff, I can understand how M J Stevens Pub-N-Restaurant can command such a large audience. Their Original Fish Fry comes with a choice of one to four pieces of homemade breaded premium Atlantic Cod, and served with waffle fries, homemade coleslaw, with marble rye bread and butter. The portion size was amazing to the point of overflowing. I recommend not getting more than two pieces as you'll definitely take the rest home with you! The rest of their menu is quite complete with burgers, steaks, salads and other delectables guaranteed to please any palate. All items are reasonable priced. They also have a very nice beer and wine selection. As it is not necessary to have a white wine with fish, I enjoyed a great Pinot Noir with my entree. Please note that they don't take dinner reservations so either plan on arriving early or waiting a bit for a table. They have a nice bar area and outdoor patio space to sit and wait for your table while enjoying a pre-dinner drink. read more

We've driven by here many times and even tried going one other time and it was too packed to wait. A packed place right off the expressway is usually a good sign. It did not disappoint. The service was very good and friendly. Food was fabulous. They had a creamy duck soup on the night we went. That is rare to find on a menu, so when it's offered we have to order it. It was hearty and flavorful and you could definitely taste the duck. We then ordered Prime Rib and the Dry Rub Ribs with a side of their homemade BBQ sauce. All really tasty and done perfectly. We often find fall off the bone ribs to be dry, not here. Definitely, plan to give it a try. read more

We have been going to MJ Stevens for 35 years now, and for many reasons! All of the staff @ MJ's, both as servers and bartenders, are amazing! Their service and smiles make it so easy to go back! We recently held our class reunion @ MJ's and we can't say enough about the overall service of the MJ team! How extremely accommodating! If I could give less than one star I would. I call five days ahead of time and spoke with the owner. I informed him that we were very longtime customers but currently live over two hours away. We used to get their chicken Oscar all the time and it was made with artificial crab. Something that I personally appreciate because I have a shellfish allergy. Now they mix canned crab and artificial. I new this ahead of time. But asked if I could get it with only the artificial stuff. He informed me that it wouldn't be a problem and to only ask when we order with our server. Well we showed up and ironically saw the owner and he couldn't have been nicer! I said that we had been customers for over two decades and that I really appreciated that he was willing to accommodate us. Wellllll we ordered with the instructions of what we needed and it comes out and I started to eat it and immediately noticed that it has shellfish in it. I ask the server and she informs me that yes they mix the two together and that's the way it comes. I was shocked! I said that I specifically asked for it without crab meat. Her reply was would you like some Benadryl. Lol at this point! Thank goodness I didn't have a severe reaction! It's not about the money because I still paid for it. It's about the lack of concern and respect for their clientele!!!! Super disappointed and concerned for all future people who have allergies! Even though you think you're checking every box and doing your do diligence you can't trust this place!!!!! Even after they new that they screwed up they refused to acknowledge the errors in their way. Don't think I will be going back anytime soon. In fact I would welcome any response to what I have said here from the owner. Also if they dropping the ball here where else are they turning a blind eye? What a place. I'm so happy to have found it. I went once for a Friday night fish fry in the summer and we sat outside. We had a drink while waiting for a table, roughly 45 minutes. It was a bit chilly but they had really nice little portable fire pits to keep you warm. The atmosphere is perfect. A little loud but a very friendly crowd. The fish fry was great and you can build your own size, having the option of 1,2,3 or 4 pieces of cod. I was going back to Wisconsin and wasn't going to be able to make a Friday fish fry, but I remembered seeing that they had a Wednesday night fish fry as well! So I was very happy to get my fish fry on my last visit. The outside wasn't open because they weren't busy but when we asked to be seated outside they happily let us sit outside. Our server was wonderful and nice and wasn't annoyed by the inconvenience of us being outside. The food was wonderful again and we were very happy. read more

There's also a huge outdoor dining area that is fenced in so you aren't looking at the parking lot or highway. Classic menu. Sunday special; prime rib. Say no more. I had the prime rib with butterflied fried shrimp for $25. Comes with soup, salad, potato, bread and breadsticks. I thought I'd have lunch for tomorrow but oopsie, I ate it all. Too yummy. I did share my duck soup with my hubbie. He ordered a burger and fries for $9. It was huge. And, of course, I ordered an old fashioned; only $5.50. Very good. Whole meal including three pint beers, tip and tax was $66 for two. This is a great stop right off 41, exit K and go North on the west side fromtage road. It's located North of greater Milwaukee and a nice stop on your way to or from Chicago and the great northwoods. A bit more upscale than my other two favorites, The Brat Stop and Uncle Mike's, both in Kenosha. read more

If you want a fish fry, this is the place! It's sooo worth the drive. It's the best I've ever had. I would suggest going on a Wednesday night for the fish fry because Friday nights are usually PACKED and they don't take reservations. The wait is usually pretty long. (again, worth it)! Also, they do NOT do to go orders. The fish fry comes with your choice of 1,2,3 or 4 pieces of fish. The pieces are HUGE! Starting at $6.95 and going up... it includes, rye bread, cole slaw, and choice of potatoe. My favorite part was the waitress put a huge bottle of tartar sauce on our table. :) I hate it when you get skimpy servings of tartar sauce and have to keep asking the waitress to get you some more. (apparently they hate it, too)! The only negative things I can say about this place are: 1. There was no air conditioning in the bathrooms. So when it's hot out, and you're cooling off in the dinning room and have to go to the bathroom, it's like walking right into an oven. Make it quick! :) And 2. We ordered a grape vodka and sprite and the bartender said there was no grape vodka. I then had to point out that they had a grape martini on the menu made with 3 Olives Vodka and then they were able to find some... not sure what that was about... PLUS... if it's your birthday, they will give you a cake for FREE. You just have to give them some notice. And with enough notice (I think 48 hours) they will personalize it for you. And not some wimpy piece of cake for one. A nice sized cake that looks delicious. All and all, worth the trip to check it out. read more

This is a resturant we have visited very often...even having a party in the basement. However, we will not be customers any more... we went for a dinner and was surprised to see hostess, bartender, and our waitress were not wearing masks. This is a state mandate. I asked to speak to a manager and he informed me that he disagreed with this mandate. He indicated that employees and customers have a right to make thier own decisions. I then reminded him that his employees are protecting his customers by wearing a mask to which he replied that he did not agree with that. I said there may be customers like myself who may not be back to which he said there are also people who will come... so suit yourself... Had our birthdays meal there Saturday night. Were told a 1 hour wait but it was only 10 minutes.. My wife just loves the seafood dish, I had the prime rib. Both were excellent as usual. Took lots of food home, if they cut down on portions that would be our only suggestion then the price would be more in line with our budget. This place is right near my home so I wish I could write a better review. My wife and I stopped in for dinner here two times in the spring of 2020 and in both cases the food was so salty it was ruined. The first time I had pulled pork and thought perhaps the over-salting was a one time event. A week later I had a cheeseburger and the overwhelming amount of Lawry's Seasoning salt was unbearable and totally uneatable. I told the server and she said thank you and she would talk to the cook. Ok well that does me no good. Anyway I called the next day and talked to the manager about the situation. She said the owner would be calling me to "make it right". That call never came. Sorry but I would not recommend this place unless you have a severe salt deficiency and love the taste of extremely over salted food. read more
