MJ Stevens has been on my list to visit for many years, but it isn't close to where I live, and whenever I drive past it, I'm not hungry or I drive by too early. Tonight I was driving back home from Appleton and I hadn't eaten dinner yet. I ordered the Prime Rib and Shrimp combo, which included a 12 oz cut of prime rib (I'm guessing it was the 12oz duchess cut based on price point), 4 breaded and fried shrimp, choice of potato (baked potato, waffle fries, crinkle cut fries, or a vegetable), and choice of soup or salad. The prime rib was thick and tender, but not as tender as I've had at most other places. It could be because it was after 8:00, so it sat longer than usual - maybe? I also thought the prime rib was under-seasoned. I dipped each piece I cut into the pool of jus on the plate. The jus was lightly seasoned, but helped provide flavor to the prime rib. The shrimp batter was nicely seasoned but thicker than I prefer, so it was hard to taste the shrimp itself. The crinkle cut fries were crisp and lightly salted. I chose not to order the included soup or salad, since I already had a big meal coming. My service from Angela was excellent, and I thought the price and amount of food provided a great value. A couple of minor adjustments could have helped my dinner live up to the expectations I had, based on the recommendation I received. read more

Our landscape guy recommended MJ Stevens so on a Sunday around lunch we took a ride. The place was nearly empty - where was everyone? They have a brunch buffet; we didn't partake but it seemed to have a nice selection of items to choose from. We both opted for the Signature burger. Holy cow - I know the menu clearly says this is a 1/2 pound patty but seeing it on my plate was something else. This is an enormous burger, loaded with toppings. Both my husband and I agreed this is a fantastic burger although next time we will probably split one as it is huge. Since brunch was wrapping up we were offered a selection from the dessert table at no charge. Definitely a nice touch. The dessert was nothing special and a bit dry. Perhaps it was because it had been sitting out for a few hours. The decor here is very dated but let's face it - we weren't there for the view, we were there for the burgers and we will most definitely be back. read more

Saturday night special is Prime rib. Been here many times and his been good. This time was not up to expectations. Was tough. The duck soup most a stew and not hot. Hoping this was a one time occurrence. will try again but if it doesn't change time to find a new place for dinner. kind of spoiled our wedding anniversary dinner. Service was good at least. It's been awhile since we were at MJ's and we were really looking forward to their delicious fish fry. I'm sorry to say that our visit was disappointing. The drinks were terrible. A simple cocktail tasted like flavored water. The menu has very little to offer... which includes no options for sides. It's fish, waffle fried and coleslaw. Somehow everything tasted the same. It didn't take long before we were bored of eating. They have an overhead paging system for calling parties to their table. In a nice restaurant like this, I really felt this negatively affected the ambiance. Lastly- be aware that if you pay with a credit card, you pay more for your meal. Which at this point is already overpriced. My hope is that someone realizes that it's better business to give customers a great experience with quality food and drinks. read more

Underwhelmed. Service was great, but the food didn't wow me for the cost. I had the Oscar chicken and my boyfriend ordered the New York Strip. The chicken was fairly good, but when they topped it with a hefty scoop of dried out canned crab??? Nope, I was turned off and very disappointed for the $19 price. Aside from me not liking my meal, I should point out that the service was excellent. We were there for my friend's birthday and our server generously brought him a small cake that was big enough for the four of us to share. Consulting in Hartford was disappointing from a food perspective until I dined at MJ Stevens. Considering I have dined here three times I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Calibrate your expectations to get a good quality meal that isn't fancy but just solid cooking. Wednesday night they have a fish fry of either baked or lightly breaded cod. I have tried both and they were delicious. The two piece breaded cod is plentiful for one person. It comes with waffle fries that are piping hot along with coleslaw and the traditional rye bread. The fish needed a little more salt but I would rather add salt than it come out over seasoned. Baked cod can be overcooked and rubbery but they cooked it so it flaked nicely. One time I was craving a steak so I opted for the small filet. I got a double side of veggies and the salad. They make their own ranch which is a plus. The salad is a generous plate with fresh veggies. The steak was cooked to perfection and was at a $28 per an 8 ounce filet it was very reasonable. The place is very busy almost every day of the week so I opt to sit at the bar which always has a stool open. The bartenders are friendly and work their tails off. They must treat their team well because you can see the dedication of the workers. I did survive the great "Hartford blackout" the Wednesday I was dining there. A large part of the area had a power outage that lasted over an hour. The kitchen had to be shut down because it needed electricity for the vent hoods. They put out more candles and people started spontaneously to sing songs. Fortunately the one register was on a generator so they could still ring out tags. I laughed that I was going to make "I survived the Hartford blackout" t-shirts. MJ Stevens is a solid dining experience with traditional favorites done well with good service. Young Hostess (red top white slacks) was rude and not willing to assist in her mistake. We had 10:00 am reservations and she claimed the reservations where for 11:30. We did a second phone call prior to Mother's Day to confirm our reservation. We did leave and returned for our 11:30 seating. Mother's Day Buffet was marginal at best. Prime rib tasted like they washed it in soap. Our server was GREAT. That was the best I can say about a special Mother's Day. Located at almost its own exit off of Highway 41 between Milwaukee and Fond du Lac - sitting pretty much alone in the middle of not much else, you'll find the throwback to a simpler time in the form of a uniquely decorated, warm and inviting hybrid of a Wisconsin Supper Club and a first rate Steakhouse's called MJ Stevens. The entrance leads directly into the huge yet cozy bar with the big u-shaped actual bar that may be required for a bonafide supper club. And the definite requisite awesome old fashioned (the drink). My friend had one and said it was delicious. The kids (ages 16-18) went for the kiddie cocktails - because where else can they get them? A decent wine and beer list was also sampled. The only deviation from the supper clubs of my past was no relish tray on the lazy Susan - I missed it. The menu is huge - appetizers, salads, sandwiches, pastas, seafood, steaks, full dinners that included chicken a la Oscar, seafood moray and cordon bleu. Their specialty is prime Rib with several sizes and preparations. The steaks are also amazing and served with au jus and homemade horseradish cream. Meals all come with choice of a nice house salad with amazing homemade dressings, or a choice from two homemade soups - when we were there it was cream of duck or roasted red pepper with shrimp! In addition they serve warm, freshly baked bread and choice of potato. Friends had prime rib (huge and delicious cooked perfectly), 8 oz filet mignon (same as prime rib -perfect), a couple of pastas recommended by our server and huge portions there too. I had a half rack of the bbq ribs - the size was more like a full rack - I ate 3 ribs and took home I think 6 or 7 more. These ribs were amazingly tender - the bones just slid away from the meat without any utensils or prodding from me. It was melt in your mouth delicious with a tangy mild sauce that complimented the meat without overwhelming. The service was absolutely wonderful. Our server was not a teenager and has probably been there at least 20 years. She was well-versed on every menu item and made great recommendations after asking a couple of questions to determine likes/dislikes. No room for dessert but they had a ton of yummy choices. If you ever find yourself between Fond du Lac and Milwaukee, treat yourself to a wonderful lunch, dinner or Saturday/Sunday Brunch - you'll be very glad you did. The absent 5th star is for three reasons: location is remote, the ambiance can be pretty loud, and the prices are on the high side. But I'll go back at every chance I get up that way - definitely worth the drive! read more

I picked up a fish fry to go last night and the waffle fries were so heavy in grease I couldn't even eat them. 1 piece of fish was also fried too hard. This was so odd, as I have never had a bad fish fry there or to go. I know the water was out, but that shouldn't have affected the cooking. A couple of weeks ago we had one of the most memorable fish fries ever here. Not because of the food (although it was very good), but because it was the first fully mask-free restaurant experience we'd had in over a year. Not a mask to be seen in the place... which, a month earlier, would have seen us turn around at the door and leave, but this was just after the mask mandate had been lifted and it felt great to be experiencing something that felt so much like normal! As far as the food goes, it was as good as ever. They have the best fried fish I've ever had! Notice I didn't say the best "fish fry". Not having potato pancakes or clam chowder (which seems to always go with fish fries for us) was a bit of a letdown. However, the spectacular fried cod more than makes up for it. I had the special combo of perch (just okay), shrimp (great!), and cod (!!!!!!!!). Amy had just the cod. And we shared a cup of shrimp bisque (their offering in lieu of clam chowder) - it was actually pretty good. Really a great place for a fish fry. Get the cod! read more

I've never been to this place. But I thought hmm I'll treat myself to a nice dinner. We'll when I walked in no one was at the desk. She was helping in back I assume. Greeted me. I said just 1, she said a large group just came in. I said I know, I brought them. We'll it's going to be a 15 minute wait, that's fine I said and sat down. Another family comes in. She let them know the same. 15 minute wait. She goes in back. And when she comes back out she said all we have available is a high pub table. All the while I had an un welcoming feeling. When someone is nervous and shifty. Basically I didn't feel welcomed. We all have that 6 th sense. I kindly told her that's ok. I'll just go up the street. Which was a mobile gas station. And that young lady was a beautiful person. I'm sure their food at mj's is delicious if your the right color. But if I don't feel like you want me there. I'm not going to force the issue. At least now I know where not to recommend. By no means am I saying this is a bad restaurant. This review is just in case some who looks like me knows that they may not be welcome here. An older style supper club with very confusing décor. We ended up waiting a little to sit in the bar area, which was expected and worth it compared to the other dining area. While waiting, we grabbed a drink at the bar. The bar was rather small and there wasn't much room to stand without bothering other customers. The service was good but the food was just alright. I ordered the 4 piece Fish Fry, which was good but breaded a little too much for my liking. The lady ordered the Salmon BLT and she thought the salmon was cooked very well but the fries were nothing special. It's very disappointing they changed their fish! This is almost sac-religious. They changed to a smaller piece of fish and somehow the breading. The breading is very close but somehow different. However, I know that this place is a beloved location for many people, so we gave it another try. We arrived at 4:45pm to try to get a jump on the crowd and I was pleasantly surprised to get a table right away. For those who have never been here - the décor is a nod to medieval times. Think red carpets, stained glass and suits of armor. I have never been in another place like it. However, the menu is completely American, including the fish fry. It took a while for the waitress to come over. She did not know the tap beers and had to have another server go to the bar to check on them. I ordered a whiskey old fashioned, as usual. The do not hand muddled but they do make their own mix which is pretty tasty. We ordered the cheese curd appetizer and it came out quick. They were nice and hot and lightly breaded. Yum. Our dinners were out almost immediately after the appetizer, which seemed too soon. The cod fillets are huge and flaky. The breading is Italian seasoned but I found the breading to be quite thick. To me the breading and flavor is a little much and over powers the nice cod fillets. I just prefer a lighter fried fish. That being said, the portions are huge - I couldn't finish my 2 piece dinner! The price is great for such huge portions. There was no option for potato pancakes. Boo. They offer waffle fries, steak fries, crinkle cut fries and baked potatoes. We both had the crinkle cut fries and found them to be just an average fry. Our waitress was nice, but the whole experience felt very rushed. We were in and out within 35 minutes! My husband and I went there for our anniversary dinner. We have also been there several times before. Food has always been ok or good. We never complained until now. We ordered prime rib, medium rare and it came out extremely medium well! It was dry, gray, didn't even taste like prime rib and just disgusting! Again we are not the type of people to complain but felt we needed to after paying $39.95 for each meal. The waitress was nice about it! She did offer us another cut of prime rib or a dessert which be both declined. We didn't want any other food after what we just ate we just wanted to it reflect our bill. The waitress talked with the cook and even brought our plate back to them and they agreed it was over done and the waitress also talked to the manager and then then manager came over and offered us the same thing another cut of prime rib or a dessert which again we declined. Because we declined the other prime rib and dessert they had us pay the whole bill! The manager even said they took prime rib to another table that was over done and they didn't complain.... Well good for them but as a manager you shouldn't even be telling people that. What does that say about you and your restaurant. Whatever happened to customer service! It was nice you offered us other food but really do you think we want to eat that after what we just ate and really how good is prime rib when you take home. I don't understand that if you can offer us another cut of prime rib to take home and or a dessert totaling roughly $100 then why couldn't they have removed at least ONE meal from our bill or gave us our dinner free instead of us paying over $100 for our meal. They would have been out that money anyways had we taken the other prime rib or desserts so why have us pay the whole bill for shitty food! they could have at least compensate for something! We can understand food not always being perfect but just because we do not want what you offered us doesn't mean they shouldn't have compensated for something. Been eating here for years and it's taking a dive. Lack of employees is not the reason either. Upon last arrival 3 teenage employees were playing on the floor at hostess table. Employees were standing around while a half dozen tables went un-cleaned or bussed. We were one of only 5 tables in the place on a Thursday night and we sat for about 15 minutes and no one would even talk to us. After we asked for a manager they claimed they didn't realize we were waiting... the manager didn't care at all that we were upset and the service has gone down. I hope the owner realizes this type of business in the current economic climate will put him out of business. I've not been to mj Stevens for a long time. It was never fine dining but tonight's meal was really bad. I had the beef and barley soup and i could not eat it, it reminded me of dinty moore stew. My moms stake was supposed to be medium rare, the first one was medium well and after sending it back the second one could just barely count as medium rare. Yesterday my husband called to order 2 ribeye dinners. He had to talk to 3 different people before he could order. Finally they got the order .. as he went in he paid , and left he didn't think to double check the food. As it turns out he received 2 philly cheese steak sandwiches, with cheese whiz.....2 baked potatoes and 2 salads. CLEARLY NOT WHAT HE ORDERED!! And who eats baked potatoes and salads with 2 nasty sandwiches ?? The sandwiches were not edible... This is not the first disappointment from MJ Stevens. The last time we were eating in the Restraunt , and our waitress was so sick - snotty, nose running , sweating , and beet red in her face- excusing herself with allergies. She was sweating profusely, it was disgusting -no thank you. We have been going to M.J Stevens for many many years now, however we will never return. Never ever. Clearly they cannot understand a very simple dinner request, they don't care if their employees are sick or not they just have them work. The food quality went from great to horrible. If you were looking for a good steakhouse don't go to M.J Stevens. If you're looking for good food, don't go to M.J Stevens. If you're looking for a good service don't go to M.J Stevens. The waitresses and bar tenders are really friendly except for one lady that works on Fridays. She always complains about the long day and doesn't do the business any favors. Mixed review. MJ's food is excellent. We have been going there for years (even though the drive is a half hour of the highway) and my husband loves their fish fry. I am kind of the problem, I guess. I order their steak sandwich as I am not a big fish fry person. I feel like a Karen when we order it. It comes w/cheese, mushrooms and onions. I ask for the steak (plain / nothing on it at all). I also ask for the bread and steak to be separated (they usually do it with a piece of foil, which is great). This is so it doesn't get all soggy on the drive. And for the french fries to be separate for the same reason. I have made this order at least 25 times. They have gotten it right maybe 7 times. Tonight when he got there, they had forgotten the steak and he had to wait while they made it. He failed to check the bag because he was anxious to get home but he did ask if it was plain and separated and they assured him it was. When we got home it had all the junk on it yet again. So, I scraped off the onions and the cheese and the mushrooms and went on with life. No, it's not the end of the world but I can't figure out what they can't get it right? I even heard him ask them to repeat the order on the phone when he ordered it. I don't "think" it is too much to ask. it's not like it's cheap. Oh well, from now on, he can get a fish fry (cuz he loves their fish fry) and I'll just figure something else out at home. Just can't do it any more. read more

While visiting from the U.P., we chose MJS for a special dinner out for a birthday and anniversary. This was our first time here and our guests had been here quite a few times and recommended it. Great recommendation!!! The drinks, food, service and ambiance where all 5 stars. Our waitress was well informed and seasoned with the menu and was perfectly attentive. Drinks were great and not whimpy. We all ordered something different and all meals were spot on and prepared perfectly. Steaks done to perfection, salmon and shrimp not over cooked and the seafood mornay was rich in flavor and didn't skimp on the seafood. The quality of the food was as good as any high end restaurant, but the quantity of the food was impressive for the reasonable prices. It made for a very enjoyable celebration and evening out. My only complaint is...........I wished we had a restaurant just like this in the Escanaba area. Great food, great menu and great service. Something we lack up in da U.P. Our first time here. The wait was 1.5 hours. But I found it worth the wait. appetizers and main dishes 10 of 10. Price point a little higher then normal but so worth it so 9. Atmosphere 10, bathrooms 9 for cleaning but thats normal rating for me. Service 10. Bar service 9 out of 10. Wow, can I just say I think I've had the best veggie sandwich of my life so far?! I was there on Sunday with a group of 4 adults and 2 kids, we arrived around 11 am. We opted to sit at the bar rather than wait for a table. The staff was attentive and friendly, I think Bonnie was our main bartender's name? First of all, the portions are huge. One of use had a salmon salad, another chili, the kids had grilled cheese. From what I saw they had enough fries with the GC to share with the adults. I went for the portabella veggie sandwich and seriously, it was delicious. When I read the menu I thought it might be more of a chopped concoction of mushroom, green pepper and onion with the cheese and aioli. But to my surprise, the portabella was actually the base of the sandwich and toppings were piled high with a generous amount of melted mozzerella cheese. The portion was so large that my bf and I could have shared the whole plate but that also meant I had leftovers to look forward to. I have no idea what made it so good but it was. My bf got a bacon bbq cheeseburger and it was hugemongus. Overall, just a cute little place with nice people and excellent food had by all in my party. When we were leaving a little after noon, there many parties waiting which I assume is because they have a huge brunch buffet that looked pretty awesome.
