Went here for lunch today with two other couples. I heard it has changed management since the last time I was here so figured we'd give it a try. Got there at noon and there was only one customer. Waitress took our drink order and three of us ordered hamburgers....The Rookie and Rookie of the year. One order for Chicken quesadilla, one order for the nachos and one order for shrimp tacos. It took about 35 minutes to get our order...seemed longer. The hamburgers were very good. Nice bun and toppings. We all liked it. The Chicken Chimichanga and Nachos were all good. However, the shrimp taco was really lacking. It came with three very small shrimp and the sauce was not very much and hidden under the lettuce. They need either larger shrimp or to add another shrimp on here as the ratio of shrimp to taco just wasn't right. Very disappointed in it. The side Caesar salad was very good. We had one side of sautéed green beans and they were very al dente...could be cooked longer. They have a good looking menu and I'd go back for the burger. I was tempted to order the shrimp Po'Boy, but after seeing the taco sized shrimp I'm glad I didn't try it. read more

First time here, our table of 4 .. every order came out wrong. 3 out of the 4 of us ordered hot dogs, and every order came out with the wrong toppings. how do you mess up hot dogs? The sweet potato fries were cold .. like they had to have been cooked at least 30 minutes before we got them. The hot dog buns were stale, but extremely chewy too, which I've never experienced before. I do not like leaving negative reviews but our experience was just too weird to ignore and honestly I'm hoping I don't get sick, the hot dogs just did not taste right. Great neighborhood spot in the heart of Lake Carolina a planned community in NE Columbia. There downtown area is really nice filled with businesses and MJs is one of the best. Drive up in your car or golf cart and enjoy a great neighborhood pub. There are normally about 10-12 beers on tap with many more in bottles. The are normally specialty offers from the kitchen. This visit was a bust. Called before arriving to check their hours as many establishments were closing early for New Year's Eve. Reassured that it was fine and we had time to dine. There is street parking that is shared with nearby businesses and within close proximity. During my visit it was dimly lit but they have a bar and many televisions if you'd like to catch up on sports while you dine. They do offer happy hours specials. I opted for the two taco Tuesday meal and selected fish and steak for my tacos. The shared onion rings were delicious and piping hot. My initial order came out very cold as though they'd put the food away and just took it out the fridge to make my order. The manager remade it and I ate the salty steak taco first. When I bit into the second taco, the consistency was weird. I opened it and inspected it and it was chicken chunks instead of the fish I'd asked for. At this point, I called it a loss and put my napkin over my plate and let the server know. When the server brought the bill to the table, I asked my dining companion if they'd discounted my food for the mistakes. In fact, it was a full charge. I was too through and reached for my water I had been sipping on only to touch the mouth of the cup and it was covered in something sticky like syrup and had lipstick on it. I was not wearing make up and this totally grossed me out because I'd been drinking this ish. Once again, I mentioned it and the manager offered a lame excuse about the items being washed in cold water. Bruh, everyone knows that the water temperature has to be at a certain degree for sanitation. He's probably equally frustrated and just told us he comp'd the entire check. At this point we decided that we'd cut our losses and keep it moving. However, I'm not myself when I'm hungry and it was disappointing how a simple order had so many missteps. My daughter and I made a stop in here for the first time a few days ago and we enjoyed. Upon entering, there is a sign that states you have to wait to be seated. There is a high wall that separates the door from the dining area. They couldn't see us, so it was little minute before someone came up front to seat us. We both opted for burgers. I got the burger wings combo. So the beef is not seasoned and you are not given the option of how you want your burger cooked....or atleast is wasn't offered. My wings were hot honey and they were ok, but I doubt I will ever get those again. There are quite a few TVs in here so you can view any sport but I think football is their choice which is perfect for me. Our waiter was mysterious, to say the least! He was awesome but he reminded me of an actor. He would swoop in which seemed out of nowhere. He didn't give his name. I was met by a very gracious hostess at about 8:00pm on a Thursday so the crowd was modest. Seating was quick at your table of choice. It's a little noisy but it's a bar and grill!! Somber hues cover the walls under a black ceiling. Stringed lights are draped against a back wall of wood panel, very nice. There are big screens on the walls and the customer base seems to be families and seniors. Oh, two sections on the floor, the bar is separated from the dining area but you can order from either. I chose the dining area. So far so good! Service: Servers are in black and white with shorts, others in Jeans. kinda reminds you of a HS school cheer leading squad. . Very upbeat and tasteful. Polite and attentive is the order of the day. I was very pleased with the appearance and attitude of the staff. In the first 5-10 minutes your drink order is taken, delivered and the food order is noted. About 20 minutes in and I was eating. My server was excellent! Burger did not come out initially as ordered but it wasn't critical. It was a bit dry, very little cheese and almost no sautéed onions as advertised. I never blame servers for the food, that cross has to be carried by the kitchen. It did come with an onion ring but sautéed onions would have added much needed moisture and flavor. The check was requested and I prefer it that way. I feel some kind a way when checks are summarily dropped before I'm officially coming in for a landing, so to speak. I have to return. I think that extra star would have been easier if the burger tasted better than what I can produce on a grill, and trust me I'm pretty good on a grill! Summery: Ok. MJ's Grill named for the proprietor's children is a good staple for Lake Carolina in Columbia SC. It's not on a main drag. Has a feel just above a local mom & pop bistro but worthy of a good word. It's in a community's commerce section. If you desire good food, a pleasant atmosphere and good service, check them out. There's is a big presence in a small community subdivision. read more

Rebecca has to be the most rude waitress I've ever had the displeasure of meeting, for starters. On a scale of 1 to 10 in customer service, she receives a "Big Yikes". Holy cow. We just moved to Lake Carolina two days ago and have already been here twice. The food is actually incredible and we did not expect a neighborhood bar and grill to be so good. Every single thing I've tried has come out piping hot, well seasoned, and so flavorful! Not to mention the amazing selection of drinks and the military discount on Thursdays. The service was also phenomenal and there was only one server on yesterday (a Friday afternoon). She was so busy and still made our experience great. I ordered the philly steak and onion rings, the philly steak only had a few bell peppers and no onions and the onion rings was not cooked enough they were soft and soggy. i will not order from here again. We were told that they had a lot of takeout orders and some orders were messed up. That's not good enough when people are paying their money to get food, that's not acceptable you will lose customers. I wasted $13.74 on food that is not really good, maybe their cook's need to learn how to fix a philly steak correctly and not just throw something together thinking it's acceptable. read more

My wife and I stopped for breakfast. With a change in ownership, we were hoping breakfast would improve as it's in our neighborhood and convenient. When we walked in there were two people at the bar and no one else eating. When our food arrived, we were only provided the food and utensils. No cream or sugar for coffee or any other condiments. The waffle I ordered was too cold to melt the butter by the time I received it. The hash browns which are now fast-food patties were excessively greasy. The sausage seemed to be nothing more than flavored fat. Absolutely disgusting. I would rate this as the poorest breakfast I have ever paid for. Free buffets at 2 star hotels are better. The final dagger here is pricing to quality. Specialty breakfast restaurants in the area are similar or lower priced with far better quality. Although convenient and really like to support my Lake Carolina community I still expect quality and value from my spend on dining out. There is a reason this place is empty for breakfast. I was excited to see this restaurant open in my neighborhood. Since i dont really cook having a local spot to goto to grab a meal really appealed to me. I like the atmosphere of MJs. It has sportsbar feel with the multiple tvs. The wait staff were very friendly and very helpful. My daughter and i both ordered the grilled wings and they were awesome. I will definitely be back to try more of the menu. At the moment they are only serving beer and wine but im hoping they get a full bar soon. If they do get a full bar i will be there multiple times per week as they are located within walking distance from where i live. read more

a lot, to be honest. after arriving at around 6pm, on a relatively slow evening, we were handed the wrong drinks. when telling one of the servers our correct drink order, he made it seem like a hassle. waiter told us she was about to take our order, it took her awhile to return. maybe she was just having a hard time hearing me, but our chicken bites didn't come out tossed. it took over half an hour for a club to come out, and then we went ahead and took another club off our bill because we had already been here for over an hour and hadn't recieved the dish yet. had to have bill corrected. overall, it was not a good experience. chicken dry, burger not very flavorful, etc etc. please work on it because there's ton of potential. the menu has a large selection read more
