We were disappointed. The food has always been good, but not last night. The fried seafood was limp and soggy. The salads came out at the same time as the entrees. I always add two pieces of tender and delicious Blackened Catfish. They do sometimes over season and it gets salty, but I simply scrap off some of the crusty seasoning and it's fine. Other than that one dish, I have not loved anything else. None of it was bad, but also nothing memorable. The Pimento Burger was decent, yet it didn't satisfy my craving after weeks of wanting a good burger. Blacken Catfish BLT was okay, but way too salty (again) and bread felt stale. Broccoli & Cheddar Soup was fine, but I would have definitely liked more cheese. The service is pretty good and it's quite spacious inside the restaurant. However, like I said, I come here due to location, but stayed for one particular dish. Had to kill some time in Lexington and decided to give them a try. We were greeted as soon as we walked in. We explained we would be there several hours. The inconsistency is very strong here. I have dined in, and gotten food via Door Dash. The inside of the place is very nice. The lady who seated us was pleasant. Our server was okay. I feel like she didn't want to be there and was a bit standoffish when we were asking questions about the menu-my finance had never had their food before and this was our first time in. I got the pork chop dinner. The chops were dry. Like you know when wood splinters? They were that dry and flavorless. My baked potato was fine, the side salad was gross. It was brown and the cucumbers were dry and curled up. It takes at least a day to make cucumbers do that. And the salad itself wasn't that cold. My fiance got the chopped steak and his was flavorful, juicy and was good. He liked the collards and baked potato he got. I have Door Dashed their ribeye sandwich. Now, that thing is great. It's seasoned decently and cooked well. The bun gets soggy in transit but that is to be expected, and it still tastes pretty good. The onion rings stay crunchy which is nice. Their fries were horrible. They tasted like weird dehydrated potato things. Gross. There is a place to add comments or requests about the food when you order through Door Dash. I have asked them three times to add some mayo and pickles to my sandwich. They only read those special instructions once and that's a bummer because those two additions really make that sandwich. And will someone please tell me what the heck is up with that tiny, almost stale, piece of corn bread? Please? We are paying a decent amount for subpar food. Can we please get an actual piece of cornbread that isn't dry and weird tasting?! Today I ordered chop steak, onion rings and masked potatoes. It was alright. The onion rings were completely overdone, almost burnt. The mashed potatoes were ok but tasted like they sat in an unclean hotel pan for a while. Their mac and cheese tastes the same way but lacks flavor and is usually mushy. The chopped steak itself was fine, but for whatever reason, my stomach is hating it. I have had it before and it was fine so I thought it would be fine this time. Nope. It makes me really sad that our local restaurants in Lexington always have issues. When you think you've found something good, it's never ever consistent. I would much rather eat at our local places but I swear not many of them know what salt is, or how to execute dishes consistently. It's a shame when McDonalds is more consistent than an actual sit down restaurant that Lexington is lacking. I will be taking a very long break from The Root Cellar. Very DISAPPOINTED with my to go order today. I have eaten inside this establishment as well as placing to go orders multiple times. As you can see by the pictures provided, the grilled pimento cheese sandwich was soggy and there was barely a layer of pimento cheese spread on the bread. The soup was only filled to a 1/4 of a cup in the container and the loaded baked potato was the smallest potato I've ever seen. The potato didn't include all the loaded ingredients and was brown and mushy when cut open. The only edible item I received was the Mac n' cheese but it was bland. Went for lunch and was seated right away. Service was very good, our waitress came around often and was prompt. I had the hot honey chicken sandwich and onion rings, my wife had the pimiento cheeseburger and fries. Sides were solid, hot honey chicken was seasoned perfectly and cooked perfectly, but I would have liked a little more hot honey drizzled. My wife loved the pimiento burger. Best chicken livers ever! Prompt service. Polite people. Good prices. Their whole menu is awesome but my favorite is the chicken livers.

We were very disappointed with our dinner tonight. We had the shrimp & grits with Tasso gravy and the herbed chicken with mashed potatoes & gravy and green beans. The first dish had 7 small, bland shrimp on a bowl of grits with a bland brown gravy. The second dish had tough chicken cutlets with maybe a rosemary and basil herb blend that was off-putting. The mashed potatoes came with canned brown gravy, and the green beans were also straight from a can and tasteless. Our meals were $18 each and were just basic, bland food. Too expensive for not much food. They have an entree section that is supposed to come with a side salad, a choice of side, and corn bread. I ordered the fish and chips off that section for $18. I ask for lima beans as my side. Food comes out and all I have is two chicken tender sized fish fillets, a bite and a half worth of corn bread, and a small thing of lima beans. Apparently they count the chips(fries) that are a part of fish & chips count as the side which I unknowingly replaced. But for $18 there is no reason the chips part of fish & chips should not be included. The portions and menu need work. Service was fine. read more

The place is super cute. It's not a huge place. The menu has a decent amount of options. However, the food was just okay. I wasn't impressed. The service was good. They were super friendly. We got the deviled eggs, which weren't very tasty, and the southern egg rolls, which were decent. I got the hot honey fried chicken sandwich. It wasn't very hot at all, in my opinion. It certainly wasn't bad, but it didn't warrant the hype. I had the Root Cellar burger. It's interesting; goat cheese, fried green tomato, bacon jam and the mix of fries and onion rings. I ordered it medium and it came back hockey puck. They remade it, but it was still too well-done. I found the portions to be reasonable for sure, but the burger was dry and the fries and the onion rings were really not good. It's difficult to mess those up. I honestly think the fries and onion rings are better at Sonic or Zesto's. The unsweetened tea is really bitter. The service was decent. My family and I decided to try The Root Cellar on a Sunday approx. 1130 am, they were not busy during this time. Our waitress was Donna, she explained everything and gave us the history about the restaurant. She was a very good waitress I could tell she enjoyed her job! She explained that most of the food was bought from a local farm, I really enjoy farm to table concept. The inside décor is really nice and sets the farm like tone. Our food came out in a timely manner, everything was seasoned and tasted delicious. All our food was fresh tasting, we could tell the fish wasn't frozen fillets. We all enjoyed our entrees and will most definitely return in the near future. The only regret is not checking them out sooner. read more

My parents and I stopped by this restaurant at 11:30 on a Sunday morning. The place was completely empty which was great for us. We were seat promptly. Our waiter Donna explained everything from what everything was made from and where they bought their supplies. Our food came out quickly and everyone really enjoyed their meal. You also get a lot of food for the price so I ended up having leftovers. I had the fried chicken with fries, mashed potatoes, and Mac n cheese. The meal normally comes with a salad but I substituted for the mashed potatoes. I wasn't a huge fan of the Mac n cheese. I prefer a more soft and creamy Mac then this, but my parents loved the taste of it. My dad ordered the fish and chips. You could easily tell that the fish wasn't frozen. It was very fresh! I will definitely be coming back because I like my first experience and the food was great! Tip: they don't offer a military discount, which is disappointing for those that have served or are currently serving. read more

My pregnant daughter wanted to have her Baby Shower there for My 1st Grandchild. We end up choosing another place that was affordable. The root Cellar has some fantastic food! I love having an evening dinner here. All the menu items are fantastic, especially the blackened catfish sandwich that I get almost every visit. Service is always very professional and friendly. I do have one major complaint though that knocks off a star for an otherwise 5. This place is filthy. I have seen dirt marks and hands prints that have not been cleaned in over a year on the walls. There is grime and grossness everywhere. How this business passes the inspections, I do not know. I don't even want to imagine how messy the backroom/kitchen is. Even the bushes outside are overtaking the building. This is not a sanitary place and if the food wasn't so amazing I probably wouldn't set foot in here for this very reason. read more

We LOVE this restaurant. It's always busy because the food is delicious! The chicken kale wrap is amazing. They marinate it (I think overnight) and it's so tender and tasty. I typically get the veggie plate which usually is very good though there have been a couple of times in the past when my order included the green beans which were quite salty. This was a great little find! We were traveling from Johnstown to Florence and did not want to go into Columbia to eat so we started searching the Lexington area and saw this restaurant and decided to try it. So glad we did. There was many options on the menu that I thought sounded great but wind up getting their famous Cobb salad, which was excellent! Service was also excellent! The only thing I would mention that was a little bit distracting was there was a large party of adults that were in the center of the restaurant that appeared they had already eaten by the time we arrived, and they were still there when we left and they were pretty loud. I felt like it was a bit rude to stay at a table that long on a Saturday night. Other than that, I highly recommend this restaurant and would definitely go back!! read more
