I have been asked to come around during their karaoke nights but still haven't - one day I will! However, I did come here for lunch one day since I've wondered about their food. Food: I tried their BLT sandwich, and a friend ordered an appetizer that was homemade type of fries with melted cheese. The food was good, as much people may think that there is no trick to a BLT, I disagree. The main ingredients need to be there, and not just slightly make an appearance on the sandwich. The lettuce has to have that nice crisp, and the tomato has not seem like they are running out of fresh tomatoes. That said, the sandwich made me happy. I was happy to see that there was a good "healthy" amount of bacon in the sandwich. The homemade fries were good as well. Ambience: There's a good amount of space, and I can see how this can be a fun place to hang out for karaoke. There's a deck outside, and it is a very nice place to sit and have drinks or a meal. The inside has a bar located to the back, which I feel is ideal. Service: I am sure the service is better at a different time, and we may have come in when they were changing from lunch to dinner shift. But, it still could've been better. I came afterwards, and it did take a while to get served even though we were the only occupying table. The water received had some Hi-C punch in the mix. I know that it can be an issue with the fountain, but there wasn't any acknowledgement or mention that water is currently coming out that way. I didn't feel like drinking soda with my beer, so I took it either ways. The rest of the service was good, even if it was a little delayed. I'll try some karaoke sometime. read more

The food is good for fried bar food, the dill sauce for the fried pickles is To DIE for, but the wait times are absolutely ridiculous. We make it a point to never come here unless we know we have at least 2 hours to sit and wait. I went here once and had to cancel my order before work since I wasn't even served food within the first hour. You wait for the menus, you wait for drinks. You wait to order. You wait for your food. You wait for the check. You wait for everything. I have been there when it is completely packed and I have been there for lunch on a weekday when there have been only another table eating there...the wait is still the same. It's truly a shame because I would eat here all the time if I knew the wait was less. read more

Went there on a sat evening/night to hang out with some friends. Sat down waited 15-20 mins for a server to come over. Never came. Got up went to the bar to order a drink and was pretty much ignored. Never received any service. If you don't have enough workers then hire some. Or you will continue to loose customers. Myself or friends will Never will return. read more

Perfect bar. It's simple atmosphere is exactly what I love about it. Two pool tables and a bar. That's all I need. And the best bar food.

Just a neighborhood place with a casual vibe. I come occasionally with a Tuesday evening dinner group and occasionally for trivia night on Wednesday. The former is pretty casual, and the latter gets VERY rowdy with a lot of regular teams competing. The food is very pubby, with my favorite bring the tavern panini, which I can never seem to finish, so it goes home for lunch the next day. Their chef salad is HUGE and well presented. When I first presented the Yelp coupon here, the manager said he wasn't aware of its existence and hadn't authorized it, but grudgingly gave me the 10% off on my sandwich. After a second use, he said he wouldn't honor it anymore, even though there is no single-use restriction on the coupon. So much for customer goodwill, huh? 8/1/18...returned after a month or so away. Menu has changed, prices raised, and food quality has taken a dive. I came on trivia night, and saw that rules against cheating with cell phones aren't being enforced. Stopped by here for lunch last week. Had one of their burgers, and it was AWESOME!! Big, thick, juicy and loaded with flavor. Definitely a hand made patty! Combimed with their sweet potato fries and it was all i could eat. Good atmosphere, friendly staff, and some great beers on tap! read more

MJ's is the out-of-towner's dream bar. I was in norfolk for work, after which some drinks and good food are well deserved, MJ's delivered a friendly Hello as soon as i walked thru the door. By the end of my visit, regular tavern visitors were calling me by my first name, i had enjoyed several excellent drinks, and the food was absolutly increadable. Everything i wanted in bar food - not too greasey, made with pride and served with pleasure. The buffalo chicken wrap was stuffed FULL of chicken (so much so i had enough to take back to the hotel for dinner), salad was fresh and tasty, and the pesto ranch was suprisingly perfect. Had i stayed in town longer, i would have gone back for the sunday brunch. I know next time i'm working in Norfolk or surrounding area, MJ's is my place. read more

I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal at MJ's. The prices are competitive, atmosphere is great, little or no drama. The staff actually come around and make you feel welcome and they remember repeat customer's favorites and preferences. Thursday evening is a must.. Steak night! My first foray here was Valentine's Day. Both of us opted for the Jumbo Shrimp (fried). They arrived delicately breaded and cooked to perfection. For my second visit I had the Chicken Norfolk, a dish created especially for this venue. A blackened chicken breast with a tasty cream sauce and bits of country ham. Yum. My third visit was a Thursday and I chose the NY Strip special with French Fries. Not massive portions, but quite ample and, best of all, delicious. Oh, and lest I forget, the French Fries are sublime. On my fourth visit Chicken Parmigiana was the choice. Again, the breading was deftly handled, the meat plump and succulent, served over a bed of Angel Hair pasta with a pleasing Marinara sauce. The menu is limited, but a disclaimer says that it will expand. My hope is that ambition for greater variety does not impede the quality that has been established in a relatively short time. The overall ambience is that of a cozy neighborhood eatery, where friends gather to enjoy a good meal for the right price and the conviviality that naturally follows. read more

This place is awesome! Every time I come here, there's an excitement everywhere. I've had the wings, spring rolls, steak and fries and the food is amazing! The bartenders are super friendly and the place is clean. The parking is not bad and there's an enclosed outside area for smokers. The owners are nice and everyone is friendly and polite. Went there for lunch today. The place was not very busy. The service was not very friendly nor informative about the menu or specials. We both got sandwiches with fries. The fries were good, but the sandwiches were plain. Nothing real special about this place. Not sure that I will return back. read more

Really unsuspecting little bar next to Southern Bank on Granby St in Norfolk. Grabbed a bite one day and was pleasantly surprised! The roasted tomato soup was BETTER than the Bakers Crust version. It was so good, I'd wished I'd got a bowl instead of a cup. Not too creamy, not too salty... Perfect and fresh. The chicken salad wrap was delicious as well. Fresh chicken, tomato and lettuce wrapped in a tortilla... It was very satisfying. I'd love to go again sometime soon, but first I'm calling to see if the tomato soup is on the menu that day MJ's is a cool little place with good eats. Since it's a bar I wouldn't mind having drinks there sometime -- it's a cute place! read more

My wife and I stopped here for dinner. I got the Chef's salad and it was fantastic. The greens were fresh the turkey and ham were delicious and the sliced bacon was crispy and perfect. The honey mustard dressing was the best I ever had. The wife got a club sandwich. It was perfect. Somehow we had room for desert. We split the bread pudding and we couldn't finish it. Portion size here leans towards the huge side. Food seems to be made with very fresh ingredients. Service is excellent. Our server was great and the owner even came by to talk with us. read more

So, this experience was phenomenal! Nick was my server and I absolutely loved him. When my ma and I needed anything he seemed to just be there. Conviently making sure we were always updated on our food and asking our preferences. The customer service showed to my ma and I has been the BEST I've ever had in my entire lifetime of 22 years lol. MJ's is more than well-suited to the demographic. When you compare the quality of food to the price, it's nearly impossible to beat. The atmosphere is laid-back; a touch loud for my taste, but that's just me. The staff are friendly and the Todd is simply a great person. We will be back well past our 3rd and 4th visits. We just moved here, and new friends invited us here for trivia night. They have a good selection of drinks, and the deals on tacos and taquitos were really good. I had chicken tacos that I inhaled, and my husband cleared a plate of nachos. On top of that, the trivia was a lot of fun. We plan to come back often! read more

Yelp grossly failed me on this one! We ventured in because it's in our neighborhood, new to us and had heard the food was good. Oh my word! It smells horrible in the restaurant and on the patio as well! I think they possibly could be given 4 stars on the french fries. The service was sub par. We waited forever for drink refills. There was literally one server and she was new at DINNERTIME! My philly steak had no flavor. The fried pickles were "crispy critters." The side salad that is reviewed in pics on here as a dark green salad with fresh vege's was an iceberg salad with a few cucumbers and tomatoes. read more

COME ON...PLEASE, WE CAN ALMOST WALK TO A FOOD LION THAT HAS IT ON SALE NOW FOR .99 CENTS A LB. I would think customers would be more appreciated than this but apparently not!
